About Amanda Herring

I don’t remember when it started, it must have been when I was very young, but for as long as I can remember I have loved being creative. Whether it was drawing, sewing, or gluing something (or anything, really) with hot glue, I loved it. I am sure that there are lot of you that can say the same thing about yourselves! That is one of my favorite things about my life. I get to be creative person in a world full of people that love and appreciate what it means to be creative.

Being a designer has taught me a lot about myself, my abilities, and the people in the world around me. I have learned that creating, for me, isn’t a process, but a way of life. In choosing to live a creative life I am constantly looking for new adventures and experiences. I am sorting through what I see and experience to find the thing or things that will take my creativity to the next level. And then I am taking those things and incorporating them into my life and my craft. I do each of these things with a purpose, to create a more beautiful life for myself and for each person that I have the opportunity to touch.

Six years ago this month, I started my own little creative business called The Quilted Fish. I had no idea at the time what it would turn in to! The last six years have been filled with some pretty awesome adventures, one of which has been designing fabric for Riley Blake Designs. What an amazing opportunity it is to design fabric that then becomes a part of someone’s creative process. Designing

fabric is one of my favorite things that I get to do. It is an amazing process, one that challenges me each time I go through it. Each fabric line embodies a creative time in my life and looking back on them is like reading old journal entries.

Pattern Designer Spotlight About Jessica George of Sweetbriar Sisters When I was in middle school I used to watch my sister do her Graphic Design and all I wanted was to do the same thing, but in three dimensions. I dreamed of being an Industrial Designer. (I know, I know, no one’s ever heard of those- they’re the ones who design furniture, cars or really anything three dimensional. Don’t ask me how I knew that when I was in 6th grade…) I worked on my art skills, kept my grades up and by college was admitted into a highly competitive design program. Then, three semesters away from graduation, I was diagnosed with POTS- a chronic condition that affects my heart and leaves me extremely fatigued. Every day.

But when life gives you lemons… you try desperately to make something delicious with them... Right?! I finished school and searched for something I could do with the health I have. So here I am, working from bed (I’m way too tired for a desk!), meshing my design skills with my love of sewing to create some beautiful patterns for my pattern company, Sweetbriar Sisters. Every day I feel like I need to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming- do I really get to sew fuzzy dragons all day and call it work?!

Bummer.
