Bleeding a radiator might sound like a tricky job, but it's actually pretty simple—and doing it yourself can help make your home warmer and your heating bills smaller. If your radiator feels cold at the top but warm at the bottom, there's probably air trapped inside, blocking the hot water. Luckily, you don’t need to be a heating expert to fix it. Before we get started, remember that keeping your radiators in good shape means you won’t have to replace them often. If you need a new part or want to update your heating setup, you can always check out the Cheap and Trendy Finds at Radiator Village. Now let’s go through the five easy steps to bleed your radiator: Step 1: Turn Off the Heating Before you do anything, turn your heating off and wait for the system to cool down. This makes the process safer and avoids hot water spraying out. Step 2: Gather What You Need All you need is a radiator key (you can find these at most hardware stores), a cloth or small bowl to catch any drips, and maybe a towel for the floor. Step 3: Find the Bleed Valve Look at the top of your radiator. You’ll see a small valve, usually on one end. That’s where the radiator key fits. Place your cloth or bowl underneath just in case water comes out. Step 4: Open the Valve Slowly turn the radiator key anti-clockwise. You’ll hear a hissing sound—that’s the air escaping. Once the hissing stops and water starts to trickle out steadily, the air is gone. Close the valve by turning the key clockwise. Step 5: Check Your Boiler Pressure After bleeding one or more radiators, your boiler pressure may drop. Take a quick look at your boiler's pressure gauge and top it up if needed by following the manufacturer’s instructions. And that’s it! Your radiator should now heat more evenly, helping your whole home feel much more comfortable. Bleeding radiators once or twice a year is a great habit to keep your heating system running well.
