Dear Ridley Families, Friends, and Benefactors, As evidenced by your generosity, Ridley College continues to inspire generations of parents, past parents, friends, faculty and Old Ridleians with our commitment to excellence, and our aspirational vision to “inspire flourishing lives” in the next generation of Ridleians. You will see in the 2016–2017 Annual Report that Ridley is stronger than ever, and the engagement of our community continues to support our growth and future aspirations.

A total of 835 donors (231 of them new) raised more than $1,093,000 for the Ridley College Annual Fund campaign in 2016–2017. On top of that, 550 donors contributed more than $800,000 to other funds such as the W. Darcy McKeough ’51 Speaking Arts Fund and the Rowing Legacy Fund. Talk about making a statement! Thanks to our generous donors, Ridley students enjoy learning enhancements in the Lower School Library, and bleachers in the Fieldhouse large enough to allow the entire student body, JK to Grade 12, to congregate in one place. In the Great Hall and Williams Hall, students now dine on refurbished oak tables and chairs surrounded by the history of our school, thanks to our benefactors. Our inspiring archival collection is being digitized, enhancing student research and the ability for our community to access the College’s legacy with the press of a button. And of course, our endowment continues to grow with nearly $900,000 of generous gifts flowing into our endowed funds, and provide future generations of Ridley students with the opportunity to access the legacy of a Ridley education.

Finally, we are particularly excited by the annual gifts that will allow us to launch and pioneer an exciting initiative that supports our attempts of “inspiring flourishing lives.”

By reaching our 2016–2017 fundraising goal for the Positive Education Fellowship, Ridley College will enter into a two-year partnership with Dr. Lea Waters from the University of Melbourne and become the first Visible WellbeingTM Foundational School in North America.

These announcements are all signs of a highly successful learning community—one that is committed to advancing its goals and improving its student experience. We hope reading about the impact your giving has made brings you great joy. We are excited to join with you in the Tiger culture of philanthropy for years to come.

prefect profile Cassandra Mitchell ’17 Ridleian Pursues Career as Global Leader

Cassandra Mitchell ’17 walked across the stage on Prize Day 2017, ending one chapter of her life and beginning another in her pursuit to become a global leader.

While Ridley will always be her home, Cassandra has travelled more than 11,121 km to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, where she now attends New York University’s global campus.

Cassandra’s Ridley journey began in 2014 and, in that short time, she fully embodied what it means to be a Ridleian. She was active in every aspect of the school — academics, arts, athletics and co-curricular programmes. With a strong passion for global change and human rights activism, Cassandra led clubs such as the Positive Space Group and Ridley’s environmental group, the Green Tigers. In her final year at Ridley, she also led her peers as a school Prefect.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme challenged Cassandra, encouraging her to take risks, broaden her horizons and grow as a learner. However, academics were not the only valuable aspect of Ridley that Cassandra benefitted from. According to her, “Without a doubt I would not be going to my dream school without the amazing support I have received here at Ridley. I have been given the opportunity to grow as a learner through the IB programme, and grow as a leader through prefectship and the clubs I’m involved in. I am a more intelligent, more thoughtful, and just a better person because of the programme. I am so grateful for that privilege, but I think the most valuable thing that Ridley has given me has nothing to do with being a student. Through the amazing people I’ve met, I have learned how to listen, and have developed some of the most meaningful relationships of my life.”

Upper School graduation is a big step, but the promise of adventure and discovery has Cassandra eager for her next chapter. New York University’s global campus’ purpose is to foster the next generation of global leaders. Cassandra is among likeminded individuals, who wish to shape the future and are prepared to dedicate their lives to transforming our globe. “ What attracted me most immediately [to NYC Abu Dhabi] was the ethos of the school. The vision of the institution is something that I am so excited to be a part of,” Cassandra explains about her post-secondary selection.

Just months into her university career, Cassandra has already attended the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP23) in Bonn, Germany where she represented the United Arab Emirates as a student delegate.

Ridley is keen to witness the many ways Cassandra will transform our globe in the years to come.

I always target my donation to scholarships and bursaries. I was a scholarship student and could never have attended Ridley without that financial assistance (I grew up in a working class family— my dad died when I was four and my mother had to go to work to support the four of us on her own). The 2016–2017 Advancement calendar was another busy schedule and included many highlights for proud alumni, current and past families, friends of the school, and many others.

From Homecoming to the RCA Golf Tournament, and “Young Alumni Pub Nights” to various receptions around the world, we continue to marvel at the wonderful global community of Ridley.

Receptions in places like Boston, London, U.K., Hong Kong, Muskoka, and Seoul were well attended. These functions allowed us to recount accomplishments in the recent past of the school and its community, while communicating our aspiring goals of the future. As always, we value your input and feedback in these matters.

Among our major events included two golf tournaments, Winter Homecoming, and, of course, Fall Homecoming, which included the Governors’ Dinner, campus tours, alumni rowing, and much more. The RCA Golf Tournament was held at Piper’s Heath and we had so many teams join us for Winter Homecoming, we had to rent ice at the Meridian Centre!

We are already looking forward to another year of exciting and worthwhile events with the entire Ridley family.

The Family Guild had another successful year thanks to the many volunteers who donated their time, talent and other resources to the many events held throughout the year.

Every year, the Family Guild nominates a volunteer who has demonstrated exemplary service to the Guild and truly lives our motto, “Terar Dum Prosim.�

CHRISTMAS MARKET On December 2, the annual Ridley Christmas Market was held in the Fieldhouse. This much-anticipated event brings together Ridley families and the broader local community to kick-off the holiday season. The Christmas Market hosted more than 60 exciting vendors, with activities including a bake sale, a visit from Santa and musical performances by our students, adding a welcomed festive touch. The event generated close to $18,000 in income thanks to the leadership and dedication of our co-chairs Heather Charlton and Elaine Jenkins.

RECYCLED CLOTHING PROGRAMME

This year, Headmaster Kidd presented the award to Eva and Rob Schmidt for their outstanding volunteerism.

TRIVIA NIGHT The Family Guild successfully hosted its second annual Trivia Night on February 25.

Funds raised from this friendly competition were donated directly to Summer Programmes in order to provide financial assistance for local underprivileged children to experience a Ridley summer camp session.

The Family Guild volunteers not only collect, launder and press gently-used uniforms that have been donated throughout the school year, they also assist with sales in August and September. This remains one of our top revenue generators thanks to all those who donate clothing and the many volunteers who help made this successful. This year $32,805 was raised.

For 2016–2017, tuition and fees comprise 84% of the total revenue, with the remaining balance coming from the Ridley College Foundation, the Ridley College Fund USA, Inc., Summer Programmes, facility rentals, Hank's campus store and donations from our alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends.

Our greatest asset is our people, a talented collection of faculty and staff who are committed to delivering an exceptional educational experience for our students. It logically follows that our largest expense is the investment in employees through salaries, benefits and professional development.

Other significant operating expenses include maintenance of facilities and grounds as well as financial assistance. Ridley is firmly committed to our financial assistance approach, which attracts talented, diverse students who might not otherwise be able to afford a Ridley education.

We continue to invest in new forms of information technology and the required infrastructure to support it.

Ridley operates in an efficient, financially responsible manner, employing best business practices.

We develop multi-year plans to include renovations of existing facilities and infrastructure and to contemplate new facilities as identified in the Campus Master Plan.

We are very fortunate to have a strong philanthropic base at Ridley and greatly appreciate the investments that you make in the school. Your continued support is a key element to Ridley’s ongoing success.

Our year-end financial statements have been audited by Deloitte LLP. The auditors have provided a clean opinion. I am pleased to share with you, in the attached report, some details of our financial picture for the 2016–2017 academic year.

As you will glean from this report, Ridley College is in a sound financial position. The growth in student enrollment over the past several years continues to yield a positive fiscal impact. However, the capacity for further growth in student enrollment is very limited and yet the cost of operating the school continues to increase. The capital improvements that must be made to our beautiful, but aging campus are significant.

G.O. Watson Memorial Bursary This fund was established in 1996 by sons Andrew ’65, and Robert ’63 in memory of their father, Gordon. Their father was Canadian and spent a good deal of his life in the Niagara region. While it was a sacrifice for him to send his two boys to Ridley in the 60s, he was very proud of his association with Ridley and with his ability to give his sons a ‘jumpstart’ in life that was unavailable to him.

“Ridley’s enduring motto was and still is a big draw for me,” states Michele Bett, Ridley’s first female Head of Upper School. She explains that she not only wants to make a difference; she wants to join a cause and lead a movement. She is passionately committed to international education and to student learning, and this dedication led her halfway around the world from London to St. Catharines.

Ridley’s global search for talented educators struck gold in 2016 when Michele applied for the Head of Upper School candidacy. It was quickly clear to everyone involved in the hiring process that Michele was meant to be at Ridley. As a teacher with experience at world-renowned independent schools delivering the International Baccalaureate (IB), Michele exemplified the enthusiasm for curriculum, methodology, assessment and programme development that would help Ridley flourish in the highest ranks of Canadian independent schools. Michele’s qualities as an educator intently devoted to service and learning asserted that she was an obvious role model for Ridleians.

According to Headmaster Kidd, “In our search for the new Head of Upper School, I was looking for a dynamic educator and a caring, competent leader to inspire our faculty and take teaching and learning to the next level at Ridley. Michele has fulfilled and exceeded expectations in each of these categories and I’m encouraged by her shared vision for our school.”

Michele began her journey to Ridley College at home in Southampton, England, where she developed an early passion for reading and learning. Spending hours as a young girl with classic English authors like Charlotte Bronte, Jane Austin, and Charles Dickens, she dreamed of becoming a writer or a teacher. Growing up in an English-Italian family, she made annual trips to Naples, Italy, and naturally developed a multi-cultural outlook.

Michele left Southampton to attend the University of London, where she earned a BA in History and English. Years later, she went on to earn a Master’s degree from Endicott College in Spain. Married to Michael (Mick) Bett and mother of a young child, she accepted her first teaching position in 1987.

She broadened her teaching experience at two more British schools before going on to TASIS England in 1996. She enjoyed 19 “glorious” years at the distinguished American-international boarding and day school near London, progressing through many roles from the Chair of the History Department, Assistant to the Headmaster, Assistant Academic Dean, Curriculum Coordinator, and finally Academic Dean. In her last years at TASIS England, Michele also taught Theory of Knowledge in the IB Diploma Programme.

When she arrived at Ridley with Michael and their youngest son Cameron ’18 in 2016, Michele immediately felt at home. Impressed by the welcoming sense of community, she went straight to work, focusing on faculty collaboration, professional development, and creating a student-centred learning environment. More than anything, what Michele embraces is the professional pride of the faculty and the joy of learning in the students.

Although Michele holds numerous titles, her most cherished are those of daughter, wife, mother (of three) and grandmother, all of which show off her inherently caring nature. Beyond baking and cooking, Michele is often found cheering for the Tigers on the basketball court and being escorted around campus by her beloved Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Pip. “Times change, people change, but values don’t,” Michele says. “At Ridley, we don’t ask you what you want to be; instead, we ask you what global problems you will fix. This sense of social responsibility, the idea that with great privilege comes greater responsibility, made my choice to relocate to Canada a very easy one.” With the continued goal to diversify, adapt and prepare students for the future, Michele Bett seems destined to ensure that Ridley’s finest days are still ahead.

This Annual Report will provide you with a snapshot of the 2016–17 year by celebrating Ridley and recognizing our donors.

We hope that the summation of this successful last year will instill a renewed sense of confident pride in Ridley today.

However, we must solidify our future by continually seeking to advance our school which requires help and support from the Ridley family through annual giving.

A key aspect of annual giving is to encourage alumni, parents, past parents, faculty and staff to support the more immediate needs of the institution, its students and its faculty. Here are some key points regarding our Annual Giving Campaign.

WHY DOES THE SCHOOL NEED MY SUPPORT? The Annual Giving Campaign is the foundation for all fundraising. Currently at Ridley, tuition fees cover only 84% of the school’s operating budget. Annual giving contributes the most to help bridge the tuition gap, support Ridley’s highest priorities, and transform students’ lives.

Donations to the Annual Giving Campaign have an immediate impact today and tomorrow.

THE SCHOOL DOESN’T LOOK LIKE IT NEEDS MY SUPPORT. Like all independent schools, we rely on donations to assist in offering an education that empowers for a lifetime. Every building and programme at Ridley have been made possible thanks to the generosity of past donors. The excellent courses, many co-curricular activities, well qualified faculty, maintenance and enhancement of our campus all come at a price.
