I know that this achievement is not just about me – it’s about the team that has supported me every step of the way. I am so fortunate to work alongside people who inspire me daily, and who continually pour their passion and dedication into making our community thrive. The success that we celebrate is a result of the hard work, commitment, and collaboration of everyone involved, and for that, I am truly grateful.

Ridgefield is a town built on the strength of its businesses, large and small. It is the lifeblood of our community – creating jobs, fostering innovation, and bringing people together. RPAC Art Center: Explore the arts your own way RPAC Art Center and Academy, now in its vibrant new location at 410 Main Street, is offering an exciting array of summer camps to ignite the creative spirit in young artists ages 10-18.

The Art Spot: Celebrating 30 years of camp, creativity, and care At The Art Spot Art Camp, imagination meets inspiration meets classical training!

For more than 30 years, its week-long, halfor full-day camps have been a favorite spot for campers of all ages to explore art, hone current skills, and experience something new.

Camp options cover a wide range of artistic mediums, from painting and drawing to printmaking, fashion design, and manga, to leatherworking and handcrafts – all in a fun and supportive environment.

“We offer summer camp as it should be – fun and exciting with a chance to learn something new, play, and make friends,” says owner Joanne Hunter, “We believe in teaching fine art classical practices and basic rules while encouraging campers to veer away from art rules and create their own style.”

Paint, Draw & More at the Georgetown School of the Arts: An artist-driven educational space open to all Since 1999, Paint, Draw & More has been offering dynamic and enriching art camps for children across Fairfield County. Drawing on founder/owner Susan Jackson’s three decades of experience teaching art, the camp is designed to inspire and empower young artists. “There’s no such thing as bad art,” says Jackson. “We focus on problem-solving through fun, play, and exploration.”

With a diverse lineup of offerings taught by local artists, the camp encourages students to explore their creativity while developing essential technical skills and building self-esteem. Camps are held in towns across the county, as well as in the Georgetown studio. There’s something for everyone, including drawing, sculpture, puppet making, cartooning, collage, printmaking, and fiber arts. Campers may work on individual and group projects – and there are plenty of outdoor activities, too, that bring nature into their art.

A Look at Local K-9 Units

Ridgefield K-9 Officer Michael McKnight and his dog Odin have an incredible strong connection, that is constantly reinforced with training.

olice officers notoriously have a special bond with their patrol partners and rightfully so, because sometimes their very lives depend on those relationships. That connection is a strong one, whether your partner has two legs….or when it comes to K-9 units, four.

K-9 police units were first used in Belgium in the 1800’s. Since then, canine officers have been an integral component of many police forces – working alongside their human partners to keep communities safe.

Ridgefield Police Officer Michael McKnight, who grew

up in town, always wanted to be a part of the K-9 Unit.

McKnight’s high school football coach was Shawn Murray, who was responsible for reviving Ridgefield’s K-9 unit in the early 2000’s and served with his dogs Zeus and Loki. Lt. Murray offered Officer McKnight advice and support with his training.

Officer McKnight had seven years on the job before joining the K-9 Unit. He was matched with Odin, a German Shepherd Belgian Malinois mix, who came from a Slovakian breeder that specializes in police and military dogs. “He has both the Shepherd herding

trait as well as a little of the crazy Malinois energy,” says McKnight.

As part of the Danbury K-9 Unit, Sergeant Alex Relyea’s dog Gunner, a black German Shephard, was originally trained in the Czeck Republic. “We’ve been together eight years now.

His performance has been extraordinary,” says Relyea.

ON THE JOB Dogs and their handlers attend months-long training academies to build their relationship and to work on obedience, skills (such tracking, detection and apprehension), and

commands. Training is constantly being reinforced in order to stay sharp and ready.

“Mainly we use Odin for tracking missing persons - either someone having a mental health crisis, a dementia patient or a lost child. We want to find that person as soon as possible,” says McKnight. The dogs follow what McKnight calls the ground disturbance. “They can follow the scent from grass to pavement back to grass.”

Additionally, police dogs are skilled in suspect apprehension. “I continue to reinforce the ‘bite’ command until we have the person in custody. I can then give him the ‘out’ command,” says McKnight. While bite work training is important, Sergeant Relyea is proud that he has never had to utilize his dog in that mode. “Gunner’s presence has had a deescalating effect in many situations. It’s amazing how many fights haven’t occurred or chases haven’t happened because he’s with me,” says Relyea.

Building searches are another dangerous task for the dog – they are the first ones to enter a building to find an intruder. “For that situation, we give a search and bite command,” says McKnight. While there isn’t a huge drug problem in the area, the dogs are also trained to detect narcotics such as fentanyl and meth - it doesn’t take much for them to smell it The dogs wear custom-fitted bulletand-knife-proof harnesses for protection.

Should the police dog get injured, they are given the same honors and as their human counterpart. The harnesses are also used by

their partners to give signals to the dog. “If I clip his leash on the rear hook, we’re in tracking mode. If I use the front hook, he’s more in aggression mode and he knows that it’s on,” says McKnight.

At HOME Being a K-9 officer is a 24-hour job – Odin and Gunner both live at home with their officers. Transitioning from work to home is important. “At the end of the day, I take off his e-collar and that is the signal that he’s off-duty,” says McKnight. “When we leave in the morning, I turn it on, and he perks up because he knows he’s back on the job.”

While at home the dogs can interact with the officer’s family but not often with other dogs. “You need to remember that they aren’t the same as regular pets,” says Relyea.

Both officers use dog crates at home to give the dog a safe space to decompress.

Working dogs have a ton of energy. “I live on 12 acres that Gunner can run on. It’s almost impossible to tire him out,” says Relyea.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE Police dogs usually serve about ten years, but it really depends on the dog’s health – any sign of a decrease in performance or injury can signify that it’s time to step down from the job. Once retired, the dogs are allowed to spend the rest of their lives at home with their partners. Neither officer likes to think about no longer having their dog as their partner. “Gunner is ten years old and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down,” says Relyea. “Our bond is indescribable. He hasn’t left my side for eight years,” says Relyea.

Revitalizing the Georgetown Scene

s Main Street in Georgetown looking … a little different? True, it recently welcomed five new businesses. But that’s not the only thing. It’s bubbling with positivity thanks to local entrepreneurs who are passionate about revitalizing Georgetown.

The Shops at Auburn Landing The unicorn might be missing from the front of the building at 28 Main Street, but not the magic. The newest adventure to grace this space is the Shops at Auburn Landing, a collaborative spot for retail and custom design. It’s actually three separate businesses: Lily Astraea, The Shop Vintage, and FIVE AND NINE DESIGNS. The three businesses blend perfectly in the space. On one side, Laura Verses of FIVE AND NINE DESIGNS brings two and a half decades of experience to Georgetown, offering fine jewelry she describes as “wearable luxury.” As you peruse the collection in the shop, consider that one

of Verses’s specialties is redesigning jewelry for clients who have a unique piece they’d like to liberate from the dresser drawer and let dazzle.

In the center of the store, showcasing the collective expertise of stylists Jacqui Coleman, Sinead Grimalt, and Sarah McLane, is The Shop Vintage. When the pandemic temporarily halted their careers as stylists and set designers, the trio began hosting pop-ups celebrating handpicked vintage finds. Together, their mission is “to salvage every piece of lace, leather, and linen from the landfill.”

Lily Astraea founder Stephany Sanderson was heading down another retail road when she kept getting requests for floral designs, a task she didn’t initially consider a gift. “It’s just instinctual to me,” she says.

Now, Sanderson provides floral designs for small events and venues, specializing in dried flower arrangements. Local and seasonal gifts have a “Stephany” touch. Additionally, there

are cheerful to-go bouquets in a bucket next to the cash register.

Although separate paths led the Shops at Auburn Landing ladies to Georgetown, you can feel the joy, friendship and support.

“We’re all putting in 100%. We’re such a good support system for each other,” Sanderson explains.

Kermit’s Bake Shop Further down the road is Kermit’s Bake Shop. On an unseasonably warm day, Kermit Perlmutter, clad in a black Bad Brains T-shirt and newsboy cap, rolls out dough. After apprenticing to a pastry chef at age sixteen and fine-tuning his technical skills in the Bay Area, Perlmutter felt the pull back to the East Coast to be closer to family.

“I was looking for a small space, which isn’t easy to find,” he explains. The shop is cozy, Kermit’s Bake Shop is a one-man show.

The layout is simple but exudes warmth: from the light coming in the front window to the golden butcher block to the delicate, buttery flakes of the morning buns. Fans of Kermit’s Bake Shop scoop up his sourdough bread, laminated pastries and desserts.

“I’ve got some pretty regular regulars,” Perlmutter laughs.

Georgetown Owl Market and Saloon Keep strolling until you reach the Georgetown Owl Market and Saloon, serving creative comfort food and caffeine.

Inside, it’s elegant but cozy, with forest green walls reminiscent of the Redding’s woods.

The paint color, owner Kate Perry explains, is called Rosemary Sprig.

Perry and business partner Gerry Valenti were drawn to the space as a perfect spot to offer a market on one side and a restaurant on the other. The market provides

breakfast and lunch sandwiches, sushi, gourmet goodies, and a coffee bar from local roasters Quartertone Coffee, in a sun-drenched seating area. On the dining side, Perry and Valenti have established a menu with trademark dishes like the Wild Boar Sloppy Joe and Beef Cheek Braisé but look forward to shuffling things up. Visitors to the Georgetown Owl should sidle up to the bar for a Basil Martini, or a Red Bandana for “No-Alcohol Vibes.”

“We’re excited to be in Georgetown,” Perry says. “We love it down here.

People are doing amazing things down here, and we want to add to it!”

STEMS + CO and Wild Blueberry Finally, there’s the newest kid on the block. STEMS + CO is a floral design studio specializing in arrangements for weddings, corporate events, and gatherings. Owner Lauryn Soden describes her style as “whimsical, organic, a little laid-back.” She also makes her own hand-poured soy candles, available in the shop, as well as home and lifestyle products. Sharing the space, Wild Blueberry is a “pre-loved” children’s boutique. After collecting cool pieces for her own children, owner Ambar Zaatar saw an opportunity to offer a curated selection of eco-friendly and upcycled clothing and toys.

“There’s a huge generational and mental shift in the way we shop,” Zaatar muses. “People are way more conscious about where things come from.”

Georgetown is definitely thriving!

F L OW E R POWER SOAR Together’s Programs Work to Combat Loneliness

n New Year’s Eve, 2024, Ridgefield resident Cathleen Savery was sitting quietly at home missing her family and close friends when there was a knock at her door. “When I opened the door, there were two SOAR Together volunteers with lovely smiles and hands full of bouquets,” says Savery. “Those beautiful flowers made my day. I felt cherished and noticed - no longer so alone.”

SOAR Together was launched in early 2023 with a mission of helping address epidemic levels of loneliness and social isolation through immersive and unique programming.

With research showing both service and social connection lead to improved life outcomes, SOAR (an acronym that stands for Social, Occupational, Artistic, Recreational) began its Flower Power program to provide opportunities for planned and impromptu social connections, with service and gifting opportunities elevating the moods of all who participate.

The concept of gifting donated flowers to those in need of uplift wasn’t a new one for SOAR Together founder Ginger Smith. For many years, Smith’s parents volunteered each Tuesday at Norwalk Hospital, delivering arrangements made from rescued flowers to patients. Their sense of purpose and camaraderie with fellow volunteers was palpable and something Smith never forgot. It surprised few when Smith launched SOAR Together after more than thirty years in social services and led with a flower program. It was mere months after the passing of her stepfather, and

the time spent with her mom arranging and delivering the first “You Are Loved” bouquets to Hancock Hall-Filosa in Danbury was cathartic for both women. It was the genesis of a program that touched 300 lives in its first month and now touches 300 on any given day.

Utilizing the proven food rescue model, SOAR trademarked “flower rescue” in 2024. Working in partnership with Big Y Family Markets, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Fresh Market, SOAR’s volunteers help in various capacities throughout the process from rescue to delivery. Rescued flowers are collected with the help of local service organizations such as Lion’s Heart and NCL and subsequently cut and cleaned by teams of SOAR volunteers who share a passion for working with flowers. The Flower Power program not only has the capacity to brighten a day but also change outcomes on a deeper level for both the giver and the receiver.

“Every single person who is part of the Flower Power program, from the floral department employees to the rescuers, bouquet arrangers to recipients, benefits from a mental wellness perspective. Like loneliness, SOAR Together’s impact on our communities is not limited to any demographic,” states Emily Mills, SOAR’s NCL Nutmeg Chapter liaison and longtime Ridgefield resident.

The refreshed flowers are brought to Flower Power programs across Fairfield County, with participants ranging from Boys & Girls Clubs to Homes For The Brave and corporations to assisted living and skilled nursing centers. SOAR’s model of program delivery, “Social Engagement Ecosystem,” is grounded in proven research that centers on a shift in the classic service/recipient paradigm by empowering those who often receive services to lead SOAR’s efforts in sparking positive social engagement within communities.

Those in cancer treatment making arrangements to deliver to those facing housing insecurity? Absolutely. Veterans in shelters creating for Boys & Girls Club members within their community?

Absolutely. Middle school students

struggling with the throes of social influence crafting flower arrangements for those in memory care? Again, the answer is absolutely.

“SOAR’s Flower Power program has allowed Ridgefield Station residents time to interact with other Ridgefield seniors, create beautiful bouquets of flowers, and find a neighbor who can use flower power in their lives. It is simply beautiful,” says Scott Schulte, EnrichedLIFE Director at Ridgefield Station.

SOAR’s goals for 2025 include increased intergenerational programming, as well as addressing social isolation on a deeper level. While loneliness is a subjective feeling, social isolation is an objective measure of social connection that SOAR is deeply committed to helping address. SOAR is collaborating with social services teams, local nonprofits, and community members through its new Spreading Sunshine program to deliver refreshed bouquets to the doorsteps of those in need of connection and uplift.

SOAR has expanded to now include Young Leaders, who are guided by Smith to help address loneliness and social isolation through school and communitybased projects. “Becoming involved in Flower Power has been transformative; connecting with other youth in similar situations to myself has been especially meaningful,” says Sophie Ferrante, one of SOAR’s Young Leaders. “I’ve been both a gifter and a recipient of being “sparked”

by Flower Power, and both have been life changing.”

The simple act of giving and receiving rescued flowers has become a powerful symbol of community healing and connection in our community. These flowers, once destined for disposal, are rescued and repurposed to bring joy and comfort to individuals, fostering a sense of belonging and care. “Everyone comes to Flower Power for different reasons and has a unique need for the healing and brightening effects of fresh flowers and a smile,” says Ferrante.

For centuries, women have used makeup

Finding the right name brand for their company proved to be challenging. “We wanted to make an epic change in the beauty space and the goal of our makeup is for every woman to have that glow, that light that comes from looking great,” says Gallardo.

here are certain vehicles, through either presence or purpose, achieve a following that elevates them above their automotive peers. We recently tested two new vehicles that look to turn decades of love into modern sales success.

Few vehicles are more recognizable or beloved than the VW Bus. The original split windshield model, produced from 1950 to 1967, is the most sought-after by collectors.

A pop culture icon, the happy-faced bus graced countless album covers, and when festooned with brightly painted exteriors and shag-carpeted interiors, quickly earned

its place as the de facto hippie-mobile. The VW Bus gained movie star status as well, appearing in hits ranging from “Back to the Future” and “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” to “Little Miss Sunshine” and even Pixar’s animated classic “Cars.”

With this endless pool of nostalgia available, VW reimagined the bus for a new generation, in either rear or all-wheel drive.

Minivans have been around for decades, but Volkswagen’s ID.Buzz is the first allelectric minivan in the US. The electric platform actually makes perfect sense for a minivan. The flat low battery pack and

lack of a drivetrain tunnel allow for a flat floor and a wide-open interior. One of my favorite features is the optional full-length electrochromic smart glass roof, which changes from transparent to opaque with the swipe of a finger. The rear two rows of seats fold fully flat, while the back row is also removable.

There are fun touches scattered throughout, including on the rear doors, which in a nod to the sliders on the original Bus, each house a sliding small window.

The ID.Buzz is adding new tech and functionality to the segment, and with its

If you’ve traveled to the more rugged parts of the world, you’ve probably encountered old Toyota Land Cruisers.

Over more than seven decades, the Land Cruiser has developed a reputation for its near bullet-proof reliability. The first generation was introduced in 1951 as a simple utilitarian vehicle. Over the following years and multiple generations, the Land Cruiser gained size and

comfort but never lost its core mission of dependable, go-anywhere capability. The off-road proficiency was there, but so was the wood trim, air-conditioned seats and extra weight.

With the introduction of the all-new Land Cruiser, Toyota is getting back to its roots. There is still leather and heated seats, but the focus is back on serious off-road chops. The last 2020 Land Cruiser that I tested had a sticker price of $90,000. My 2025 Land Cruiser was indeed a breath of fresh air with an MSRP of $68,695. That bargain price is reflected in the less opulent

interior with more plastic and less haute couture, yet all the functionality remains.

Visually, the exterior is the biggest departure.

The rounded form of the previous model has given way to a much more squaredoff design. It’s not as boxy as a Mercedes G-Wagen, but no one will confuse it for the previous model. The new version retains the rugged body on frame construction, locking center and rear differentials, and multiple drive modes for exploring the road less traveled. If you have a wild side, the Land Cruiser will take you there…and get you back, too.

The Aldrich Opens a New Sculpture Garden

he Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum has been at the center of Ridgefield’s arts and culture scene for the past 61 years. An incubator for artists at critical creative junctures with internationally renowned exhibitions and acclaimed public programs, the Museum’s recent renovations to its Sculpture Garden and grounds have further increased its offerings to artists and the community.

Last November, The Aldrich re-opened its grounds and Sculpture Garden, making major improvements to the space, including increasing the areas where artwork can be exhibited outdoors, planting over 100 new trees, and installing an amphitheater. Designed by the Cambridge, MA-based landscape architecture firm STIMSON, the project prioritized universal pedestrian accessibility and an improved connection to Main Street.

“STIMSON Studio and The Aldrich engaged in a collaborative design process that resulted in a garden that is fully accessible and has a diversity of garden settings where art can be experienced, building the connection between nature, art, and each other. This was accomplished by designing a walking path, terraced seating, and a garden-within-a-garden to encourage museumgoers to slow down, sit, and converse with nature and art,” says Eddie Marshall, Principal at STIMSON. The ability to enjoy works of art both in the galleries and on the grounds has been at the heart of The Aldrich’s mission since its founding in 1964 by fashion designer and art collector

Larry Aldrich. This revitalization project has expanded the areas accessible to both artists to present work outdoors and to visitors to explore campus and extend their visit to the Museum or simply add on a loop to their walk down Main Street with their friends, family, or dog.

“Since re-opening the Sculpture Garden, we’ve noticed increased foot traffic around our campus. We’re delighted the community is utilizing this space and hope they will continue to do so, especially as the weather improves and the Garden comes to life. We also hope people will join us for expanded programming in the Garden this summer and fall, including the Aldrich Box and a major commissioned performance,” says Cybele Maylone, Aldrich’s Executive Director.

An intergenerational group show, A Garden of Promise and Dissent, inaugurates The Aldrich’s newly renovated campus, with the outdoor portion of the exhibition on view through November 2025. The works of art on view as part of this exhibition radicalize the garden as a theme to tackle the moral, social, economic, and ecological afflictions that trouble our planet.

The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum is open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 12 noon to 5 pm, Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and closed on Tuesday.

O68 You’ve established a reputation as a clean comic, was that intentional?

Do you curse in real life?

RH It’s just kind of who I am. It doesn’t work any other way for me. I’ve always admired comics such as Jerry Seinfeld, Brian Reagan and Steve Martin, all of whom were very clean and their comedy was observational. My language is little bit different offstage, but not that much.

O68 Where do you draw inspiration from for your comedy?

RH I like to be honest with the audience, so I begin with the premise of truth.

Occasionally, it will veer into absurdity, which is usually obvious, but the core of it is a real experience that has happened to me. Sometimes, when I’m on the road for a long time, I think to myself, I have to stop and have some experiences in life so I have material to write about. Part of the creative experience is just living and getting the raw material.

O68 How does a bit evolve from an idea into something you include in a set? Do you write alone, or do you have a group of other comedians that you meet with?

RH I think my process takes a little longer than other comedians. I keep developing and polishing it until I get it right. It’s so much easier to build on something that gets a big laugh than to start a new one.

You can expand and grow it.

I pretty much write alone but I’m around so many comedians every night, so it becomes something like an informal collaboration. We watch each other’s stuff and then might say, “I have an idea for you,” but I would say about 90% of my writing, I do on my own.

O68 What is the difference between just telling a funny story and doing stand-up?

RH In stand-up, you have to keep an audience rapt. If you’re telling a funny story to your friends, you can go a minute without a laugh. If you’re in front of an audience, you don’t have the luxury of a long set-up. There’s a lot of refinement over time to find the rhythm of the joke.

O68 What can people expect from your show at the Playhouse on June 6th?

RH There will be a lot of new material I’ve been working on. I always want people to leave my show feeling upbeat. I like to focus on the positive side.

was Bryan Perri, the visionary music director, conductor, and composer whose work has shaped some of Broadway’s most iconic productions. Bryan Perri (husband of A.C.T. of CT’s Artistic Director, Daniel C. Levine) is a Ridgefield resident and serves as Resident Music Supervisor of A.C.T. of CT. Perri led an ensemble of 20 of New York City’s finest musicians, weaving together his genredefying compositions with the powerhouse vocals of Broadway star and Tony Award winner Aaron Tveit, alongside the talents of Elena Shaddow, Jennifer Babiak, Constantine Pappas, Drew Seigla, and Andrea Jones-Sojola.

From the moment the first note resonated through the hall, the audience was transported into Perri’s world—an intricate tapestry of ambient, classical, and electronic sounds that defied categorization.

His debut album, Few Words, came alive in a way that could only be fully appreciated in a live setting. The performance reached new heights

with the world premiere of Perri’s latest composition, Unorthodox Fairytale.

Aaron Tveit’s mesmerizing vocals soared through the hall, breathing new life into Perri’s compositions, while Shaddow, Babiak, Pappas, Seigla, and Jones-Sojola delivered vocals that left the audience in awe.

The orchestra (3 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos, 2 double basses, 2 guitars, and grand piano) performed with breathtaking beauty and passion, elevating the music to extraordinary heights.

Each song was a journey—an exploration of sound, emotion, and storytelling that captivated everyone fortunate enough to witness it. Perri’s ability to create a deeply emotional and immersive experience was matched only by the stunning performances of his musicians.

It was an evening that celebrated not just a composer, but a community of artists pushing musical boundaries.

A.C.T. of CT has long been proud to call Bryan Perri one of its own, and this concert reaffirmed how lucky Ridgefield, CT is to have such a talent in their midst.

His musical artistry, passion for innovation, and ability to touch the soul through sound make him a true treasure.

As the final note rang out, it was clear—this was more than a concert. Few Words: A Performance was a revelation, a landmark moment for contemporary music, and a night that will be remembered for years to come.

raduation night is an opportunity for seniors to come together one last time. In years past, however, parents dreaded the post-graduation party night when kids headed out with their friends to destinations unknown, sometimes ending with tragic results.

But a few decades ago, parents in Ridgefield and Wilton took the postgraduation party culture into their own hands. Now, Ridgefield and Wilton High School grads head from getting their diplomas into a boisterous and fun celebration that’s meticulously planned months in advance. The parties are big.

They’re fun. They go all night. And they’re very, very safe – they’re run and monitored by parents who are on-site all night. At the Wilton party, kids must turn in their phones for the night, and no outside food or drink is allowed (there’s plenty to eat and drink inside). Ridgefield High School

requires a breathalyzer test before kids come in (and again when they leave, just in case).

But why would kids leave? The parties are designed not just to be safe, but to be incredibly fun, with dozens of activities, food and entertainment, and awesome prizes.

“We have close to one hundred percent participation from the graduates,” says Emily Mills, who’s been running Ridgefield High School’s post-graduation party since 2018.

The same is true for Wilton, says Chandra Ring, executive director of Wilton Youth Council. RHS’s party turns the entire Parks & Rec Center into a giant casino-themed event complete with blackjack, arcade games, karaoke, and “lots of fun, silly games like roll-the-Oreo-down-your-face,” says Mills.

The party, which is free, is limited to RHS grads only, starts at 10 p.m. and ends at 3 a.m. There are raffles throughout the night

Post-Grad Celebrations Keep Kids Safe

with amazing prizes that have, in the past, included scooters, Yeti coolers, iPads, and Playstations. There are pies from Planet Pizza and, of course, Chez Lenard hot dogs. “He’s phenomenal,” says Mills of the beloved sidewalk fixture. “Every year he donates his time and hot dogs. That’s always wildly successful.” State Representative Aimee Berger-Girvalo shows up to run some Midway games. “We have incredible community support,” says Mills.

Wilton’s party is open to graduating classes from Wilton-area schools (public and private), and is put on by a local nonprofit and paid for through a combination of fundraising and ticket sales. It takes over

three floors of Chelsea Piers in Stamford, rolling out activities throughout the night.

“Students arrive on the first floor and explore activities like ice skating,” explains Ring. “As the evening builds, we open the second and third floors. At the end of the night, the students have moved into some type of entertainment. One year, we had a magician; another year, it was a hypnotist.”

Celebrations as large as these don’t run themselves. It takes months of planning to pull together sponsors, raffle donations,

safe transportation options, local police presence, and event logistics including scheduling hundreds of parent volunteers who take shifts on-site throughout the night. “We have a magnificent number of volunteers who chair and work with committee chairs, and are the ones executing this event,” says Ring. “They are doing the heavy lifting.”

Then there’s the week-of final sprint.

Mills and her crew start loading in Rec Center decorations the Friday before.

Post-party, everything has to be broken down and cleaned up in the wee hours of Saturday morning. Ridgefield’s Rec Center may be a rowdy casino for five hours on graduation night, but come the next morning it goes back to being a Rec Center.

Chelsea Piers has to open up the next day for its regular members.

“We tried to hire a late-night cleaning crew at one point,” says Mills. “But that was hard to find, so now we hire recent grads.

They come in at 3 a.m., and they have the energy to climb up those ladders. We’re usually out by 5 a.m.”

As the parties wind down, measures are taken so parents are assured that their kids are getting home safely. For the Wilton party, there are shuttle buses back to a designated meet-up zone for a pre-arranged pick-up. For RHS, the kids are breathalyzed one more time when they leave, to ensure someone sober is behind the wheel.

The massive amount of behind-thescenes work might be invisible to the kids, but Mills knows the event is deeply meaningful. “They go through graduation that day and want closure - to come together one more time and have fun,” adds Mills. “Me, I go home and collapse.”

ardens express their owners’ visions and tastes, whether it’s a casual cottage garden or a carefully manicured parterre. It can be a sea of color or fulfill an aesthetic with sculpted shapes and shades of green.

The Ridgefield Garden Tour on June 8 will be the first opportunity in more than 30 years for a locally organized tour of several of Ridgefield’s finest horticultural creations.

Seven private gardens plus the beautiful public gardens in Ballard Park will be included in this fundraiser for the Ridgefield Garden Club and the Ridgefield Historical Society. The two organizations will also present a Spring Soiree garden party on Saturday evening, June 7.

The gardens, most of them selected during last season’s blooming period, will offer visitors endless inspiration as well as practical ideas for their home plots.

The co-chairs are Stacey Schibli, for the Ridgefield Historical Society, and Terry McManus, for the Ridgefield Garden Club. “Tour goers will find plenty of inspiration and ideas that they can incorporate into their own gardening efforts, all while appreciating the intriguing stories behind each location,” say Schibli and McManus.

Club will be available to answer questions and offer gardening advice; Ridgefield Historical Society volunteers will greet visitors and provide historical context. Hop-on, hop-off bus service will be provided.

Longtime Ridgefielder and Arthur Ross Vice President for Horticulture and Living Collections at The New York Botanical Garden, Todd Forrest, will be the honorary chair and special guest at one of the gardens.

Specific garden site locations will be revealed closer to the date, but will include: A Japanese-inspired garden, originally created by a founder of the National Raw Silk Exchange in the 1930s. It now includes a vegetable garden, a pool, and koi ponds.

An 18th Century property that offers a series of garden rooms, both formal and less so; each was planned with a particular goal and all blend to create a pleasing space that the owner enjoys in all seasons.

Another 18th Century property on the tour, features a 1735 saltbox house that stood by the route taken by General David Wooster on his way to attack the British in the Battle of Ridgefield. Its gardens are archived at the Smithsonian Archives of American Gardens.

A series of outdoor rooms, created by plantings surrounding wooden terraces, are

the natural adjunct to a Mid-Century home designed by two architects. The garden also protects the adjacent lake by avoiding lawn or landscape plants that might pollute the lake.

A three-acre garden in Ridgebury is the place for contemplative strolls in any season, but especially in June, as flowering trees and perennials come into bloom.

At the carriage house of one of Ridgefield’s grand estates, the owner has created both formal and naturalistic areas as well as a fragrant cottage garden and a woodland walk through ferns and rhododendrons.

An 1847 farmhouse in southern Ridgefield is owner-designed, -planted and -tended, with native perennials, fruiting plants, and a vegetable garden. Perennial garden beds surround a pool.

The four gardens at Ballard Park, which are planted and maintained by the Ridgefield Garden Club, will be an additional highlight.

There is a 1920s formal perennial parterre included in the Smithsonian Archives of American Gardens, a wall garden, a native plant garden and a small memorial garden.

Rest in Peace

Ridgefield’s Famous Camel

S

ometimes a simple twist of fate can change the course of a person’s – and in this case a camel’s – life. In 2015, while living in Florida, Robb Heering attended a country fair where he encountered a worker administering an injection to a baby camel at an animal petting zoo. When Heering inquired, he was told it was a sedative because the baby camel was stressed by all the visitors. Heering was aghast, but didn’t simply shake his head at the display of animal cruelty, he was driven to do something about it. Incredibly, he adopted the baby camel. Heering, who is extremely adept at research, went on a deep dive on how to care for a camel. “I even traveled to Dubai to meet with doctors at a camel hospital,” he says.

What transpired over the next ten years affected not only the lives of Heering, his wife Stephanie, and their sons, but thousands of other people. When Heering and his wife decided to move back to her hometown of Ridgefield, Sheik came too. Needless to say, the arrival of a camel made quite a stir.

Heering established One Hump Farm, where Sheik and eventually Humpfree (an alpaca) and Harry (a llama) would live. Heering also created International Camel Rescue to rehab, rescue, and rehome abused camels, alpacas and llamas.

During his time in Ridgefield, Sheik and One Hump Farm have welcomed visitors from near and far. “We’ve hosted so many people. Sheik was a very social camel,” says Heering.

This past February, Sheik unfortunately passed away, due to a rare meningeal parasite infection.

Heering and a team of specialized veterinarians did all they could, but the infection proved too serious.

Heering says he has no plans for taking in another camel. “I was always meant to have not just any camel, but specifically, this camel, Sheik.

He can’t be replaced in our hearts,” says Heering, who is committed to providing a safe sanctuary for Humpfree and Harry, as well as continuing his work with International Camel Rescue.

LENDING A HAND

A

t the end of June, some 300 high-school teens and adults will be caravanning out of Ridgefield to provide some desperately needed home repair – and hope – to folks in Appalachia.

They’re volunteering for the Appalachia Service Project (ASP), a national Christian organization whose mission is to fix up homes in impoverished counties of Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Ridgefield’s ASP group, based at Jesse Lee Church and now in its 41st year, has become the second largest in the country.

Over the years, the number of Ridgefield High students who participate, often with a parent or sibling, has grown. A core group of about 25 experienced adults—who no longer have kids in the program—returns annually.

During the summer mission trips,

ASP volunteers sleep and eat in churches and schools, and work in teams of two adults and five teens to make homes “warmer, safer and drier.”

“ASP is the one week a year when I fully commit myself to serving others and giving back to something that is bigger than myself,” said RHS senior Dakota Smith.

On Sat., June 28, you may see Jesse Lee ASP’s morning send-off in front of the church. But, more likely, you’ll hear their honking caravan of 40-plus rented minivans returning to town around 5 p.m. on Sun., July 6.

The cost to transport, house, feed, and equip some 300 volunteers is daunting. You can help by visiting their fund-raising car washes in front of Jesse Lee each Saturday this spring.

He left town for a year, while preparing to open his own salon. “I love being behind the chair, but I’ve always wanted to have my own place,” says Leo. “As the owner, I don’t get to punch out at the end of the day - there’s always something to do, but I love it.”

Salon Leo offers a quiet reprieve from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In addition to Leo, there are currently three additional talented stylists, all of whom provide the highest level of service.

“We really care about our clients and want their experience to be the best it can be,” says Leo. Clients’ health is a priority for Leo, and this is reflected in the products they use. Salon Leo is the only local salon that

exclusively carries the Davines line.

“Davines is a family-owned Italian luxury brand,” he says. “They focus on sustainability, minimizing their carbon footprint and health.” Stylists are often regularly exposed to harsh chemicals, which can take a toll on their health. “Since switching to the Davines line, I feel so much better,” he says, “which means that my clients are also feeling better.”

Salon Leo has teamed up with the Ridgefield Guild of Artists to showcase artwork of Guild artists.

“This partnership helps the artists because their work gets displayed and possibly sold, and for us, it brings in people that might not have found our salon. It’s a great collaboration,” says Leo. The artwork is swapped out every three months, which also gives Salon Leo a refresher on their wall space.

orn into a musical family in Germany, pursuing a career in music was a natural path for Alexander Scheirle.

A former professional cellist, he received invitations to perform across Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the United States.

In 2016, Alexander became the chief executive of the renowned Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in New York City—an ensemble whose main series is held at Carnegie Hall and performs in the world’s most prestigious concert halls and has become a symbol of excellence in classical music.

Scheirle, who moved to Ridgefield with his family four years ago because of the town’s focus on the arts, is a passionate advocate for making classical music accessible to all.

Under his leadership, Orpheus launched and expanded several impactful initiatives, including “Access Orpheus,” which provides free tickets to up to 1,000 schoolchildren per concert, and “Orpheus Reflections,” a program dedicated to people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia, and their caregivers.

Looking ahead, Scheirle’s most ambitious project is “Orpheus for All,” launching in the fall of 2025. This initiative will offer one free concert per season at Carnegie Hall, offering anyone interested the opportunity to experience the transformative power of classical music.
