idden among the 300+ degrees and certificates offered at the CT State Community College is a popular program referred to as Digital Arts Technology, aka DAT. This program offers students an opportunity to explore multiple facets of the creative field for digital artists. Focus areas include animation, audio, video, social media, web development, and graphics for both print and screen.

Our team is passionate about the areas we practice and teach. We strive to include innovative ways to use and showcase the skills attained from consistently up-to-date curriculum. A high-tech classroom, professional audio production studio, variety of video and specialty image capturing equipment that students are encouraged to use, and access to industry standard software are ways we offer more for our students. And our most recent endeavor is making us DAT EXTRA! Thanks to Greg Mursko from Colabella Media, 067 NexGen is able to provide this exciting opportunity for students to practice what they have learned while attaining hands-on experience in print and web media. Embedded into the DAT design classes; students are not only gaining technical prowess in design but are reaching further by gaining skills through working with clients in a team setting, exercising their creativity, taking chances within the confines of a project, and adding a substantial piece to their portfolios and resumes.

nime has evolved far beyond its origins as Japanese animation. Today, it stands as a global cultural force—one that blends storytelling, creatively crafted visuals, and emotional resonance.

While Anime may not be historically represented as blockbuster films or other mainstream sources in the West, its growing influence across the world raises a compelling argument: anime is not just entertainment, but a widely celebrated popular art form.

Let’s face it, there is no mistaking the Anime style once you’ve seen it, but there are nuanced differences which can almost act as a creative signature of the creating studio, earning dedicated fans of a particular style. Anime encompasses a broad spectrum of visual approaches shaped by different studios, directors, and creative teams.

Some works emphasize fluid, realistic motion; others embrace bold, exaggerated designs or intricate fantasy worlds. This diversity mirrors the variability seen in painting, sculpture, or cinema, where each creator’s style contributes to a richer artistic landscape. Because no two anime series look alike to the experienced eye, audiences are exposed to a wide range of visual expression, making the medium both creatively flexible and culturally significant.

and themes. Anime includes everything from heartwarming slice-of-life stories to action-packed adventures, philosophical narratives, and experimental works. Some stories are really best told with Anime, as the style yields an otherworldly quality to it that simultaneously touches the audience in their own life experiences. This versatility allows anime to appeal to an extraordinarily broad audience. Whether someone is drawn to complex narratives like One Piece, which has accumulated over a thousand episodes, or prefers fantastical worlds found in long-running franchises like Pokémon, anime offers something for nearly everyone.

Many fans will tell you that the experience of finding and connecting with an anime series is a profound connection with the passion of the Anime artist, the story, and the characters as well as a deeper connection within their own life experiences.

Beyond its visual and narrative qualities, anime has become a powerful cultural connector, drawing people together across geographic and linguistic boundaries.

Anime conventions in the United States— such as Anime Boston in Massachusetts or Anime Expo in Los Angeles—demonstrate this collective enthusiasm. Anime Expo alone attracts hundreds of thousands of attendees each year, making it one of the most significant fan gatherings in the country. These conventions function much like art festivals: spaces where individuals who share an appreciation for creative expression can meet, celebrate their interests, and build community. Once you get a glimpse into the Anime world, it’s amazing how deep you can go.

Cosplay, a major feature of these events, further illustrates anime’s artistic impact and the passion it invokes in its fan base. Dressing as characters from favorite series is not merely an act of fandom; it is a creative discipline involving costume design, makeup artistry, prop crafting, and performance. Cosplay brings anime characters into the real world through craftsmanship and imagination, emphasizing the blend of artistic interpretation and personal expression that

makes the anime community so vibrant.

The influence of anime also extends into other cultural domains, including gaming, merchandise, and digital media. The Pokémon franchise demonstrates this reach especially well. Its impact is not limited to television or film; fans trade cards, collect merchandise, and participate in battles and events. The release of Pokémon GO in July 2016 expanded the franchise’s cultural presence even further. Within just one month, the app had been downloaded over 100 million times on Google Play alone! Very few mediums like Anime blend entertainment with so many different art forms, from fashion, to illustration and animation, to writing.

“One of the things my students want to learn the most is the ‘anime’ art style,” said Dylan Desmarais, Illustration Instructor at RPAC Art Center. “Drawing Anime is how I started, and it’s a great introduction to character design. “It’s a great jumping off point to learn about the nuances of illustration, and it’s a passion that can carry an artist through their entire career.”

Ultimately, anime’s status as a popular art form stems from the powerful ways it blends creativity, community, and emotional depth. It invites people into imaginative worlds, inspires artistic expression, and fosters connection among fans worldwide.

ith over eighteen thousand members in six years, the Facebook group “Support Local - Bethel, CT” has helped dozens of small businesses disseminate information about store hours, closing, and sales as well as allowing customers to post reviews.

Started by Genée West, a Bethel resident of thirty years, in March of 2020, the Facebook group began with the pandemic.

Having lived through the post 9/11 recession and seeing Bethel’s downtown suffer, West knew that the incoming pandemic would have the same effect on the now booming Greenwood Avenue commercial district, and

sought to prevent that.

Greenwood Avenue features a number of businesses, including a coffee shop, bookstore, ice cream parlor, barbershop, bakery, hairdresser, printer, lawyer, toy store, hardware store, as well as two churches and several pizza places. West described it as “living in a Norman Rockwell painting”.

West majored in Marketing & Design at the Connecticut Institute of Art. She then worked as a designer for Pemberton Press. During her time with Pemberton, West worked on design for both books and magazine, enjoying working on both. After her time with Pemberton, Genée moved

onto a different company, HEH Associates.

She recounted how her department received an award from the Art Director’s Guild, and was invited to Windows on the World in the north tower of the World Trade Center for the ceremony on September 11th, 2001 at 7pm. Only one ticket was provided, and both her and the other person from her company refused to attend alone, so neither went.

After that, West began freelance working as a designer. She created several independent designs, with one even being seen on CW’s “The Flash”. Her designs are available on a variety of merchandise, such as t-shirts, tank tops, hoodies, blankets, pillows, hats, mugs, bathmats, notebooks, phone cases, and much more. For her commitment to supporting local Bethel businesses, West has been awarded with an official recognition from the Connecticut General Assembly thanking her for her commitment to supporting the Bethel Community and local businesses as well as a proclamation making January third “Genée West Day”.

West has done an incredible job supporting her local community and plans to continue to do so. She says that “[she] was just the rock that went into the water and the community is the waves” and will continue with the Facebook group as long as she can.

Genée addressed the issue that businesses from surrounding towns often try to post in the Facebook group, to which she gently reminds them it is for Bethel businesses only.

She has had a number of moderators, but not many who have stayed on long due to other commitments, a problem she understands all too well.

The entire town is eternally grateful to Genée and her hard work with Support LocalBethel. She is loved and recognized in every business she goes into. Genée West is truly a benefactress to this town.

The

Danbury Railway Museum Offers a Glimpse of Train History

N

ever underestimate the importance of a rail line to an area. Railroads were essential to the development of our area beginning in the mid-1800s. Before we had trains with engines, horses pulled the passenger and freight cars along cleared roadways that later became lined with rails.

The construction of the Danbury railroad was partially responsible for the expansion of the hatting industry, the growth of the Danbury Fair, the placement of Western Connecticut State University, the development of the local technology industry, and increased populations.

When not everyone had a car, people relied heavily on trains.

Beginning in 1852, Danbury had a two-way train service to Norwalk once a day. By 1886, the Danbury line was absorbed into the Housatonic Line, and residents could go to New Milford and onto Pittsfield, MA. From Danbury, people could now go by train to both Boston and New York City in a third of the time.

From 1870 to 1925, a four-mile railroad spur was constructed between Branchville

Station and where Ridgefield Supply was located (a replica of the station is currently on site there). The line was mostly used for people traveling to elegant hotels and their summer estates. After a bad accident on this spur, the line was eliminated. Today, this spur is now a part of the Rails to Trails System.

Early on, Wilton had four stations on the Norwalk line: Branchville/Gilbert and Bennett, Cannondale, Wilton Center, and South Wilton/Kent/Hopkins. The Branchville station is still in use, the others have either been demolished or have been renovated for different purposes.

To better understand the role of railroads, visit the Danbury Railway Museum, located in the New Haven Railroad’s former Danbury Union Station. In addition to several exhibit rooms, you can also ride the train and be trained as an engineer for a short ride in the railyard. No worries; a certified engineer is always by your side.

For families, there are special rides: The Pumpkin Patch Ride, Ride with the Easter Bunny, and the First Gift of Christmas ride in December. The station also offers birthday party specials and programs for various groups.

From April to October, people of all ages can take the forty-minute local train yard ride.

caboose, with a view of the cab, and have time to visit the turntable (the only one functioning in Connecticut). Viewing a vintage pumphouse; seeing over 80 pieces of rail equipment for steam, diesel, and electric engines; experiencing air brakes; coupling and uncoupling of cars; and learning about post office and observation cars are a part of the ride.

Danbury’s Railway Museum is always looking for volunteers to service the facility in numerous ways. John Barton, a historian, has been a volunteer for many decades. He talks with pride about the station that took ten years to restore and reopened in 1980 after receiving a $1.8 million grant. Barton stresses that the train station is unique in that it has a curved platform and follows the colonial revival type of architecture with elements of Richardsonian Romanesque.

“The Danbury Railway Museum is best known for three things. We are the largest train museum in New England.

We also house the only prototype for the first electric engine and all its related

instruments. Getting this engine from Albany on a flatbed truck is a part of Danbury’s history,” says Barton.

“Another fun fact about the museum,” continues Barton, “is that in 1950, Alfred Hitchcock came to town to direct Strangers on a Train. This psychological murder mystery included Farley Granger, Ruth Roman, and Robert Wagner. Hitchcock chose the location because of its unique architecture.”

The Danbury Railway Museum is located at 120 White Street, behind the 38foot Uncle Sam Statue from the Danbury Fair. This amazing piece of memorabilia was returned to Danbury after 35 years in Lake George.

If you live in the area, you have probably passed the Danbury Railway Museum on many occasions but may not have stopped in. Put a visit on your to-do list for the future. The museum is open all year, Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. You will find the friendliest of volunteers, acquire new train knowledge, and gain respect for travel by rail.

Artist Versus the Elements

hen most people look at a block of ice, they see something cold, clear, and fleeting. But for ice sculptors, that block holds endless artistic potential.

What sets ice sculpting apart from traditional forms of sculpture, such as marble or wood, is its impermanence.

Ice is alive in a sense—constantly shifting, melting, and interacting with its environment. To the sculptor, these traits are not a limitation but a feature, giving the art form a profound immediacy. Every ice sculpture is a performance piece with a ticking clock, destined to disappear.

Sculptors must embrace this brevity.

When every second matters, the artist doesn’t have time to overthink—creating a sense of urgency and decisiveness that fuels the creative process.

From Hot Kitchen to Cold Freezer Bill Covitz, owner of Ice Matters, began his artistic journey in an unlikely place: the kitchen. After years working as a private chef in France and Belgium, he went searching for a new way to channel his creativity—and found it in ice. Having taken a class called Garde Manger or “cold kitchen” in culinary school, Covitz allowed this interest to turn into a new passion by learning skills from professionals in the field, eventually owning his own business.

As an accomplished sculptor, he was Grand Champion at the 2004 National Ice Carving Association’s Nationals, placing first on both days of the 2-day competition. In March of 2006, he placed second in the world at the World Ice Art Championships.

The year 2014 marked Norway’s 200th year of independence, and Covitz replicated buildings in ice for the Norwegian government, as well as created the stage and ice instruments for the celebration. Since 2006, Covitz has returned annually to Norway to continue building functional ice instruments and perform what he calls “ice music”—a fusion of sound, sculpture, and spectacle.

Tools of the Trade Professional ice sculptors like Bill Covitz use a wide range of tools and can work in climate-controlled studios or directly in the elements. He typically sculpts with 300-pound blocks of specially prepared ice that is frozen from the bottom up. He typically draws a template and can use a CNC machine, a computerized cutting machine, to cut out the general silhouette.

To shape the ice, Covitz uses chainsaws, chisels, rotary carvers, and die grinders to carve the details. At the end of the process, he uses a torch to bring back the clarity. Some of his sculptures take hours, others, days. During competitions or festivals, rules may require a tight timeframe—just 4 to 8 hours from start to finish. “Ice competitions are where the

artist gets to play,” says Covitz. “I thrive in the challenge of pushing ice to its limits.”

Where Ice Sculptures Come to Life Ice sculpting has long been associated with luxury events, weddings, and culinary showcases. In recent years, though, the art form has broken out of the banquet hall and entered the realm of fine art. Versatility is part of what makes ice sculpting such a compelling and adaptive art form.

“Functional ice sculptures are becoming more popular every year,” says Covitz. Some of his newest requests are used as displays for food or drink. They become the center piece of celebration for weddings, anniversaries, and festivals.

LED lights and mixed media elements elevate the impact of the design.

Bill Covitz also has a long, successful history of tools for performance art from ice harvested around the world.

One of Covitz’s most exciting challenges has been the creation of functional ice instruments—including violins, xylophones, drums, and guitars. These are not mere props: they are carefully carved from ice with electronics to produce accurate tones, relying on the density, thickness, and purity of the ice to shape their sound. Some instruments are equipped with embedded microphones and electronics to amplify the delicate sound of the ice being played.

Brief but Beautiful For artists like Bill Covitz, ice is more than a medium—it’s a living, changing partner in the creative process. In a world obsessed with permanence—preserving, archiving, and never forgetting—ice sculpting is a radical act. It asks viewers to appreciate the present moment, to find value in what is brief and beautiful.

W

hen driving up to the Wolf Conservation Center (WCC), you will more than likely heard a sound that is perhaps one of the most iconic sounds of true wilderness. It’s a sound that has inspired awe and fear for hundreds of generations and has made its way into popular media and folklore in cultures around the world: the howling of wolves.

While otherwise rare, if not impossible, to hear in most of the Eastern US, it’s a very common occurrence at the WWC in South Salem, NY just a short drive from 067, which is currently home to 30 wolves as part of a thriving conservation program that began with the passion of one extraordinary woman.

In 1999, WCC Founder Helene Grimaud put her career as a professional classical pianist on hold to establish an educational center to teach people about wolves and their significance, especially with all the fears and fables. Her goal was to use the wolves to inspire love of all living things so we could be better stewards of nature.

Once the wolf center got its grounding and became well established, she stepped back and returned to her career, performing at Carnegie

Hall in NYC, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and similar venues across the world. Today, the WCC is contributing to the preservation of two critically endangered species that few have heard of and even fewer have seen in person.

“In the early 2000’s, we were invited to participate in the Species Survival Plan for 2 critically endangered species; the red wolf and the Mexican grey wolf,” said WCC Executive Director Maggie Howell. “Beyond housing and caring for the wolves, our participation means we’re collaborating with a network of zoos, scientists, and state and federal agencies to grow the captive population, augment their genetic diversity, conduct research, and make recommendations for release.”

Conservation in Action Today, the WCC has several Mexican grey wolves and red wolves. These wolves are precious members of their species, as their populations in the wild were nearly extinguished.

Wildlife Service, in collaboration with the Mexican government, embarked on a plan to conserve the species and launched a captive breeding program with the seven remaining known Mexican grey wolves.

The service released the first captive-born Mexican grey wolves back into the wild in 1998. Today, there numbers are roughly 240 individuals in the wild.

Red wolves have a similar history.

They were considered biologically extinct in 1980 and were placed in captivity to eventually release them back into the wild beginning in 1987. The red wolves were part of a pilot program for releasing wolves into the wild, and after that there was the iconic release of timber wolves back into Yellowstone beginning in 1995.

The pup cross-foster program also began with red wolves. It’s been court ordered for the re-introduction and recovery planning, and researchers are waiting to see what areas can provide the best habitat, tolerance, and policies for the recovery of the red wolf population.

Currently, red wolves are only living in the Northeast area North Carolina.

“Wolves are a political hot potato, but there has been a re-commitment from the government, and as a result the first known breeding pair in the wild noted for the first time in a while,” said Howell.

“The Mexican grey wolf program releases captive-born animals only through the initiative called cross-fostering; when pups no older than 2 weeks old are brought out of the facility, then inserted into wild dens. It takes a lot of coordination, as US Fish and Wildlife Service and the state wildlife agencies have to find where the wild wolves are denning, and it’s a broad, vast wilderness. Then we have to hope the birth of the captive pups line up with the wild newborns.”

In 2019, the WCC participated in this effort by releasing two pups, Hope and Crumbo, into the wild. They were pups of wolves that remain at the center; Trumpet, the mother, and her mate Lighthawk who was moved from Arizona after a conflict between his family and local cattle. “In 2018 or 2019, we had a

total of 21 puppies at the facility,” said Howell. “These pups, beyond being adorable, represent the future of the recovery of their species. It gives me goosebumps to think of adults released into the wild. That’s really what it’s all about.”

The red wolf is even more critically endangered. There are only 14 known individuals in the wild. With WCC home to the majority, they are a key program to ensuring the survival of this species in the wild.

Joining the Effort Visitors to the WCC are not guaranteed to see many of these wolves, as the wolves must not get too accustomed to the presence of humans in order for them to survive in the wild. However, there is a chance to see some Mexican grey wolves and red wolves in the front enclosures if they choose to make themselves known.

Visitors are however guaranteed to see at least two wolves, the ambassador timber wolve Nikai and other ambassador wolves. “We want to make sure these are animals that aren’t just living in capacity unless they are forging a connection between our visitors and their wild kin,” said Howell.

These white wolves have been forging that connection for years. The result? A community that cares deeply for them and come together for the stewardship of nature.

“Our community is so supportive,” said Howell. “We have the police and fire department always calling us if there is road kill to feed the wolves, but sometimes even the neighbors would drive up with deer roadkill in the back of their Subaru! Of course, you don’t need to do that in order to help. If you see roadkill in New York, call 914-763-2373 and someone will come pick it up for the wolves.”

Hat Tricks Keep Danbury Hockey Tradition Alive

P

rofessional hockey is different from any other sport, says A.J. Galante. “There’s something about going to a live hockey game that is just unmatched. The energy—I don’t know if it’s the crisp air inside of an ice arena,” Galante says. Professional Danbury hockey, he adds, is its own unique gem. “To watch hockey in Danbury is special; every game feels like an event.”

Galante knows this well. His dad, Jimmy, owned the Danbury Trashers in the United Hockey League from 2004 to 2006 and appointed young Galante as general manager of that team when he was just 17 and still in high school.

The team Galante and his dad put together played its home games at the

Danbury Ice Arena and soon became the stuff of sports legend thanks to its teenage general manager, rowdy fans, and brash physical play that frequently resulted in on-ice fights. The team set a league record for penalties accrued in a single season and reached the finals in their second season. However, the Trasher’s disbanded after that season when Owner, Jimmy Galante was arrested and accused of racketeering and tax fraud, but that wasn’t the end of the team’s legacy. A.J. Galante and the team have since been featured in national publications and were the subject of the Netflix documentary Untold: Crimes and Penalties, which has made the team a household name with fans across North America

Meanwhile, in 2019 the Danbury Ice Arena welcomed a new team, the Danbury Hat Tricks. The Hat Tricks play in the Federal Prospects Hockey League and have tapped into Danbury hockey culture and lore in recent years, inheriting many of the Trasher’s most passionate fans. The team has also made new fans with its rowdy, but still family-friendly gameday environment and success: in the 20222023 season when they took home the league’s Commissioner’s Cup. This season, Hat Tricks and Trasher’s history has become even more entwined thanks to Galante coming on board as the team’s general manager.

Last year, Galante served as a special advisor to the Hat Tricks, and that experience inspired him to come back in a more direct role. He says returning to professional hockey in such a major way has brought up a mix of emotions.

“It’s definitely surreal,” he says. “It’s an honor. It’s very humbling to know people still think highly of me and my decision-making.”

have been excited by Galante’s return to professional hockey, but there’s more to going to a Hat Tricks game than the game itself, says Doug Lattuca a broadcaster and director of communications for the Danbury Hat Tricks.

Breaks in the game are filled with familyfriendly activities such as the “Chick-fil-A Cow race,” “Todd Maserati Alpha Romeo of Danbury Chuck-a-Puck,” and “Peach Wave of Bethel Find the Yogurt.” There are loads of food and beverage concessions available, and the arena features The Axe Tricks Lounge, which offers local craft beer and is a popular post-game hangout for fans and players. This post-game player availability is another perk of coming to a Hat Tricks game, particularly for kids and die-hard fans of all ages. “After every game, our players come down and they sit at a table and they’ll take pictures and sign autographs,” Lattuca says. “Win, lose, or whatever may be, they’re down there every game to show love to the fans.” The price of attending a game, he adds, is also right. “There’s really not much that you can do for a family that’s under $20 a person nowadays.”

As for what happens on the ice during the game, Galante is excited for some of the younger players he’s brought in this year, but stopped short of promising a return to as many fights as the Trashers were known for at their games. “The world is different. The sport is different. It’s not as rough and tumble as it used to be, but I do believe there’s a place for physicality,” Galante says. “A lot of people remember the Trashers for their hard-nosed style and the fights and everything else. That’s still part of hockey, maybe not as much as it once was, but it’s still part of it.”

The game isn’t the only thing that has changed. “I definitely feel more pressure now than when I was a teenager,” Galante says. As an adult now, Galante feels a responsibility to give back to Danbury hockey fans who have given him so much and with whom he has grown up. “We have so many people that I know their families, I know their kids and grandkids,” he says. “Without the fans, the Trashers would have been nothing. Everyone always talks about what we’ve done for the fans, but what the fans have done personally for me, motivating me, energizing me—I feel a responsibility to help do my part, to put the best product on the ice for them.”

I

n an era where information moves faster than truth, learning to separate fact from bias has never been more important— even in the news. We live in a world where subtle lines are drawn between us, even unconsciously, though the choices are rarely clear-cut. Whether you’re researching for a class project or simply trying to stay informed, understanding how to spot bias in the news can help you know what you’re really consuming.

Understanding Different Types of Bias Bias isn’t always about being dishonest—sometimes it’s about what’s left out or how a story is told: Selection bias occurs when outlets choose which stories to highlight and which to ignore, shaping an incomplete picture of reality. Bias can influence how stories are presented—the same event can look completely different depending on the headline, images, and context. Even subtle word choices can signal bias: describing a political gathering as a “rally” versus a “mob” immediately changes the reader’s perspective.

Source bias appears when reporters rely heavily on one type of source while excluding others. For example, a story about minimum wage that only quotes business owners, while overlooking the workers’ perspectives.

everal trusted organizations specialize in verifying claims made in the media. The CSI Library (CUNY) has a large list of websites for proper factchecking, including: n FactCheck.org, run by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, focuses on U.S. politics with detailed analysis. ●n Snopes.com has evolved from debunking internet myths to verifying a wide range of stories and viral claims. ●n PolitiFact rates political statements on its “Truth-OMeter,” from “True” to “Pants on Fire.” n AllSides and Media Bias/ Fact Check assess outlets’ political leanings and factual accuracy. ●n Ground News allows readers to compare how different outlets frame the same event, making bias easier to spot.

in the opening paragraph will obviously receive more attention than what’s buried in the middle or at the bottom.

Red Flags to Watch For Several warning signs can help identify bias. Be cautious of headlines that provoke emotions.

Articles that rely on anonymous sources or quote only one viewpoint deserve extra attention. Missing context is another major red flag—if a story feels simple, check to make sure essential information isn’t missing.

Opinions are increasingly blending into reporting, and while that can make stories engaging, it also blurs the line between fact and interpretation. Watch for language like “always” or “never”, and be wary of generalizations.

Even basic statistics can be misleading.

Picking and choosing specific data points or time frames can make a trend look real when it’s not. When you see a number from a study, ask questions:

How many people were involved? What did the researchers do? Could the results be random? And remember, just because two things happen together doesn’t mean one caused the other.

Practicing Fact-Checking Don’t just take a story at face value–get in the habit of cross-checking it. See whether multiple credible outlets are reporting the information. If a story is covered by only one source–or by several sources all sharing the same viewpoint–approach it with skepticism.

When evaluating sources, consider their expertise and potential conflicts of interest. For example, a pharmaceutical company commenting on drug prices brings one perspective, but it’s also worth hearing from patients, researchers, or policy makers. Be watchful of “experts” on social media, as they can have biases influenced by funding, affiliations, or personal beliefs.

Lastly, a useful tool also known as, “the SIFT method” developed by digital literacy scientist Mike Caulfield, offers a framework: Stop when you encounter new information, Investigate the source, Find better coverage if necessary, and Trace claims back to their original context. With practice, this becomes second nature.

Building Media Literacy Habits While good media literacy takes practice, it’s beneficial. Learn to read news from different sources—left-leaning, right-leaning, and international outlets. Look to see how different perspectives cover the same story.

Spotting bias doesn’t mean throwing out the whole article. Pay attention to word choices, what gets emphasized, and what gets left out. Compare multiple sources on important stories while asking yourself what each one includes or ignores.

Overall, this matters because it helps us form our own opinions instead of adopting someone else’s. In a world full of competing narratives, knowing how to think critically about what you read is becoming an increasingly essential and important skill.

ickling is a delicious way to reuse the arguably worst part of a watermelon – the rind – giving it a tart, nutty flavor. Most ingredients are common and may already be in your pantry.

Start with peeling the rind off the watermelon and cutting it into ½” x 2” spears. To speed up the process, you can ask a friend to help out. Fill a large saucepan with water, add half the salt and the rinds. Bring to a boil. Once boiled, strain and cool the spears.

While the spears are cooling, prepare the brine. This can absolutely be done in the same pot, saving you from having to wash another dish. Combine the rest of the ingredients and boil until the sugar has dissolved. After the sugar is dissolved, begin jarring the spears and filling the leftover space with brine. Do so until all the spears are jarred and submerged in brine. Refrigerate overnight, and they will be ready to eat in the morning.

This recipe is a wonderful way to save watermelon rinds from going to waste, and creates a wonderful snack that is salty, cidery, and tart. The pickles last up to two weeks, and the flavor grows more intense the longer they are kept.

rue Colors: Sogiecon isn’t just a celebration of LGBTQIA2S+ identity — it’s a powerful space for education, advocacy, and resilience. Designed as a convention centering queer voices, the event dives into the real-life challenges faced by LGBTQIA2S+ individuals today — from navigating healthcare systems and ensuring personal safety, to finding supportive communities in a world that often doesn’t understand or accommodate their experiences.

At its heart, Sogiecon (short for Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Gender Expression) is about bringing visibility to the issues this community faces — and creating a space where those conversations are not only welcome, but essential.

In its 2025 iteration, the conference hosted a range of panels that highlighted the depth and diversity of queer life. These included sessions on the cultural and historical relevance of drag in LGBTQIA+ spaces, and critical discussions around the concept of “safe spaces” — what they truly require to be effective, and how marginalized voices can lead the conversation about what safety and support look like.

The event has deep roots. Originally launched in 1994 as “Children in the Shadows: Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Youth At Risk,” the conference evolved into the True Colors event many knew until it paused in 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Its return in 2025 as True Colors: Sogiecon marks not just a revival, but a recommitment — to queer youth, to visibility, and to education as a form of activism.

Many members of the public may not be familiar with the term “SOGIE.” It’s a framework used in medical, educational, and advocacy settings to describe Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Gender Expression. Using this term in the conference title reflects a more inclusive and holistic approach to supporting LGBTQIA2S+ individuals — acknowledging the complexity of identity and the range of issues people face.

While True Colors: Sogiecon is undoubtedly a place of joy and affirmation, it also serves a deeper purpose — helping to inform the broader public about the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQIA2S+ people. It brings attention to systemic gaps in education, healthcare, and public policy, while empowering individuals with the tools and knowledge to advocate for themselves.

As one of the largest LGBTQIA2S+ youthfocused events in New England, True Colors isn’t just a conference. It’s a vital lifeline — one that reminds us how far we’ve come, how far we still have to go, and how critical it is to create spaces where queer people can thrive safely and openly.

Will I get pooped on? “That’s a common misconception,” says Anneliese. “You won’t get pooped on, but pee is another story.” Our 068 editor-in-chief concurs.

Is there an age or mobility requirement?

“We get people of all ages and abilities,” Annelise explains. The only requirement is to have an open heart and mind.

Local Farms Offer Goat Yoga and More!

n the ever-changing world of wellness trends, downward dog is meeting upward goat in a bleat-tastic practice that took social media by storm: goat yoga! With a number of places just a short drive from 067 to try your hoof, or your hand, at it, you may discover why herds of people are turning to goats for their mental and emotional needs.

Go(at) check it out ASAP! So, what exactly is goat yoga? “Really, it’s yoga with a goat!” says Farm Jibe-iT owner Karleen Oosterwal. “You are not only stretching your own body but also your entire belief system as you connect, relax, and play with the animal.” Make that 25 to 40 goats of all ages and sizes who use the students as a playset, hopping on backs during child’s pose, crawling under bodies during bridge, laying on chests during savasana, and offering an opportunity to bring lightness and laughter into students’ lives.

“It is definitely geared toward beginners, fun, and connection,” says Bradley Mountain Farm owner Anneliese Dadras. “It’s less about the poses and more about the silliness, laughter, and joy from being with the animals.”

And goat yoga is just the beginning.

Both farms offer a tribe of other goat-centric programs, like goat pajama parties, “Vangoat” art classes, full moon goat walks, goat cuddle therapy, goat hikes, goat leapfrog, goat birthday and bachelorettes parties, goat visits to nursing homes, goat larp, and more. “Essentially, all of these events have one thing in common: interacting with goats makes people feel relaxed, grounded, and good,” says Karleen. “Goats bring smiles to every and anyone!”

It certainly adds a whole new meaning to what’s got your goat!

What’s so great about goats? “In 2016, caprine vinyasa (goat yoga) went viral and became the news people cared about,” Karleen recalls. “I thought, ‘we have goats, we can do this.” And she has!

The programs, events, and opportunities to interact with these amazing creatures really are the GOAT! What if I’m not flexible? “No one is watching you,” Karleen assures, “Everyone is paying attention to the goats, and you can participate in any level - even simply lying on your mat.”

An easygoing attitude is all the flexibility you need.

Why do goats like yoga? “Goats are naturally curious animals who enjoy interacting with humans and thrive on attention and affection,” says Anneliese.

The goats – and the students – get this and a whole lot more during a class.

One More Thing

Jimmy

Grashow 1942 - 2025

J

immy Grashow, nationally acclaimed artist and Redding resident, passed away on September 15th. Last year, Jimmy graciously invited 068 Magazine into his studio, his home, and his world. We were honored to have had the opportunity to explore his working space. He laughed and shared stories behind each piece as he meandered through the cluttered chaos of his creations.

Jimmy was known for intricate woodcuts and fantastical sculptures in cardboard that have been shown in galleries and museums around the world.

His woodcut prints were featured in publications from Rolling Stone to The New York Times. His latest and quite possibly his magnum opus, The Cathedral, was the subject of Jimmy and the Demons, a documentary by Cindy Meehl which followed the nearly four years it took him to complete it. The film premiered in New York last June and was also shown at the Ridgefield Playhouse shortly before he passed away. “The Cathedral, at its core, is about mortality and keeping faith through life,” said Jimmy.

Jimmy loved art, but he adored his wife, Guzzy. 068 Magazine would like to extend its deepest sympathies to her and the entire Grashow family. He will be dearly missed.
