Director’s Note Time is a flat circle… Throughout history there are periods of time that the world makes a major shift and we are scurrying to keep up with the changing times. In the 14 th century it was the Renaissance, for the 18 th century it was the Industrial Revolution, and in the 20 th century it was the 1960s. The 1960s were the counterculture and revolution of social norms in America about clothing, music, drugs, sexuality, formality and schooling. The cultural landscape of America was changing as the Baby Boomers entered their adolescence and came to the realization that perhaps the “way things have always been…” was not how life should continue to be – the times they were a’changing. The Assasination of President Kennedy wakes the country from it’s fairytale slumber to the harsh reality of a changing nation. The line of segregation was being actively blurred by activists like Medgar Evans, Malcolm X and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and separate, but equal was not something that we were going to tolerate any longer. So too was the way we received information. With Vietnam raging overseas this was the first time that war was accessible to us, live in living technicolor, in our living rooms. A war halfway across the world with an “enemy” we didn’t know was raging and we didn’t even fully understand why we were there. Women’s roles were also changing with the gentle shove of women like Gloria Steinem and the ERA more women are seeking higher education and the equality in the workplace always granted to men. How is the Passion of Jesus Christ any different from where we were and where we are today? A leader of a movement gets caught up in the celebrity culture their followers create around them, and passion from those that follow the message quickly turns to the complete opposite of the message. The people in charge are afraid the movement will challenge

the current way of life, and so they do whatever they can to maintain the status quo. Young people question whether their elected leaders are leading them in the right direction, or if their own moral compass should be their guide. The themes of this piece show how truly cyclical time and history are, and we see that whether it is 33AD, 1969 or even present day that if we fail to learn from history we are bound to repeat it.
