Because ol the unknown and difficult nature of exploring the old workings (some slopes to be sL.rrveyed are only 300mm high) the programme of work is arranged on a daily bas s in close co-operat on with the consulting engineers, Messrs W J S van Heerden Calitz and Hayes lnc.

the Gold Mine Museum al Crown Mines in Johannesburg The compressor was made by Haslam & Co. in Derby, England, and was used al the lvlodderfontein Dynamite Factory from 1902 until December 1980. lis working pressure is 200 pounds per square rnch and the running tem perature s 180"F. The Grinaker team dismantled the old, belt-driven compressor at Modderlontein, transporled it to the mine museum and erected it aqdin ln this envrronment il can
