Our o{ganization is approaching its fiftieth annlversary. lt is unrecognizable of course from those start-up years. ln lact, in lhe last iive years, assets managed have increased from approximately sixty million rand to nearly two hundred million rand at this time. Our gearing ratio has hardiy changed in this period. 11 is well under the norm which means our financial health is more than satisiactory.

We can congralulate the mariy people who in the

past have helped to achieve this envious.ecord over these many years. Our roots were well planted and today they are very deep and firm; the trunk that leeds from them is immensely strong.

Mike Bush, Peter Nuyten and Arthur Reynolds are three men amongst the group's achievers; over one hundred years in combined service. What did they have in common? Why did they have such an impact on our successes? They had perception.

They had energy, outstand:ng energy. They had honesty, honesty that was simple to see and feel.

They had concern lor the people with whom they worked. Their consistency of effort throughout their working lives must be admired by all o1 us.

We salute lhem jn wishing them the best in thejr well deserved retirement. May they be given much more time to enjoy the f ruits of their labours. God bless them too.

One may well ask, "Who is going to say goodbye to Ola Grinaker himselt?" He has been with the group fot thirty-seven years and has reached retiring age.

To this the chairman replies that he is staying on as

chairman (non-executive) and will still concern himself with the group's aftairc tor some time to come. He feels that goodbyes at this stage are premature.

At the residence hostels we have been exposed to one of the most difficult brickwork designs; it can have jew comparisons. Fortunately we have building men with sound experience who are creating a good image tor Grinaker in their ability to do the job.

Jurgen Krilper leads the building men on site with Hennie Brits as general f oreman controlling all the brickwork. Backing them is Pieter van Staden, who has the awesome task of programming the daily activities. Hennie Erasmus, Willie Barendse and Lucas Labuschagne have the respo nsibility oI h itting ou r 'b ricks laid per day targel of 23000. which is being achieved with a high local labou r content. The fo remen have been training these men on site.

Sam Barnard. in control of the concrete slabs, has done a super job of keeping to the programme.

A word of thanks must go to Abilio Feijao who is on loan from Grinaker Transvaal. His app roac h and perlormance for the two months he was with us was exceptional, earning him respect f rom everyone on site.

The settlng out has been the responsibility of Gerry Torode, ensuring that we build the residences in the rig ht place. Keeping our plant running is Les Howard.

Backing our team on site are Don Brown as senior site agent and Bill L4cKenzie and Glen Howarth as mabalanes, with young Phil Smith and Elias Serite assisting them.

Alex Milne is our senior quantity surveyor on site and has the unenviable task of finding the money. Fortunately, he is better at that than find ing the d o uble on the site dartboard. Helping Alex in his never-ending search are lan Donnelly and Rob Scorgie. Danie Venter, N4alcolm Glenday and Dukes Swartz are our daily costing team; a most essential job which is being done with dedication by them.

March 1983 Addressing head office, m ine and industrial company managers after Anglovaal's annual gen eral meeting, chairman Basil Hersov foc ussed attention on inter-g ro u p trading. Th is, he felt, was not used to its full advantage and was the one area where the d ifferent companies within the group could help each other in these recessionary times. When calling for tenders, g rou p com pan ies sho u ld not favo u r f ellow members rf t heir tenders are not competitive, but at least give them the opportunity to tender in the first place.

The chairman went on to say that although the group's 'lndex of Group Companies' co p ies of which are held (or should be) by all group companies gives a wide description oI services and products availab le for inter-trading, some of the specialized services are not listed and thereiore companies are not aware of the services on ojfer. But companies could easily find out by always checking wilh John Henderson, the purchasinq manaqer at Anglovaal head office, before f in alizin g ten ders or enq u iries.

It appears, for instance, that many people are not aware of the discount power of Anglovaal's buying department. The department's motto is'combined purc has ing m uscle saves money'and it has recently negotiated better prices for bulk quantities of petrol, d iesel, tyres, packaging materials, p rotective overalls, etc. by pooling requirements on a g rou p-wide basis. This has meant a saving of up to twenty-five per cent in some inslances. Companies not enjoying these lacilities are welcome to do so. and interested parties shou ld co ntact Joh n Hen derson.

The site is in Verwoerdburg, Looking back in thefiles I see that we started to gather information on concrere rasonry early rr 1977. Ou( thoughts were given impetus when Basil Gi bert and Dave Marais returned from an extensive trip overseas to evaluate many aspects of concrete masonry construction in September 1977. adopted the generic trade name of Structura, which will apply to all our walling products, with ind ivid ual product names which emphasize the d ilfe re nt textures available. We are producing a variety of high quality products (modular masonry in seven tex-

tures

split, fluted, pitched, etc.) as well as imperial facing bricks, all in four colours, suitable for all wa llin g applications. We also jeel that we have more to offer in the commercial development field,

Our products have been well received by architec'ls and developers and we find tremendous interest in the available textures and savings of ten to twenty per

cent on wall costs.

Pete r Sturgeon, who joined us from New Zealand in January, is our expert in the practical use of Structura and tips from him on how to speed up the job and reduce costs will be invaluable to builders.

School contract was awarded to Grinaker Zululand at the end of January 1983. lt consists of the construction of seven con nected three storey classroom blocks,

metres long, a single storey administration bloc k, an assembly hall, a two storey woodwork and metalwork block, changerooms and caretaker's quarters. The

number of sizes ranging from lo plus 300 microns.

First, a primary crushing operation reduced the rock lrom minus 170mm to minus 50mm by means ol a prescalper and two jaw crushers. From here the minus 50mm malerial was led to one existing plant plus two new plants of our design and supply, where the material was further reduced in size using rotary impactors and screened out to the client's preferred sizes. The most difficult size required was a minus 400 micron size but with 2mm

When Ellis Park rugby stadium was suggested as a venue for the Triu mph international women's ten n is tournament, G rinaker was

approached to undertake the iob of building a tennis court in the m iddle of the rugby f ield. The job was to be done in the incredibly short time of one week, in clud ing

The job was a Grinaker in-house venture with SA Piled Foundations doing the piling, Grinaker Precast laying Stelcon ratts as the base ol the playing surface and Grinaker Concrete Constrq ction

hours' notice of the job. When we met Harry de Bruyn at the ground the piling had already started.

This consisted of 200 micropiles. the top of each being 200-300m m below ground level so that the piles could remain ln place permanently. A spacer was put into the top of each pile and a scaffolding jack inserted upside-down into the spacer. The 200mm square bases of the 200 scalfolding jacks th us Jormed the base of the operation, with all the jacks being levelled throughout. SA Piled Foundatrons men involved in this job were Nico Maas, John Guy, Jerry O'Sullivan, Lourens van der L4erwe, Derek Shields and Peter Op't HoL

Then the Precast operation

started. Compriband pads were placed on top oI the jacks and Stelcon rafts. which are made of precast concrete 2m x 2m x 140mm, were p laced upsidedown on top of the pads. This gave us the base of the playing surlace. I was in charge of the Precast job, ably assisted by Norman Cass. lt took three days to complete, working long hours.

Once we had linished, Tony

Wilcox and his team from Grinaker Concrete Construction took over. They lilled the ioints with sealer and river sand, placed

a layer of plastic sheeting over the

whole of the Stelcon base, and laid a concrete screed on top of the sheeting. Finally the playing surface, which was a rubber mat, was placed on top of the concrete screed and stuck down with a double-sided tape.

American Billie-Jean King said when she saw the court being laid that it was fantasic and that this was the type of surface she liked to play on best.

One ot the problems encou ntered on the job was that there was on ly

one entrance into the ground, which had to be shared by

everyone. An othe r was the necessity for bu ild ing an access road of Stelcon into the middle oI the field in order to avoid spoiling the grass. This had to be removed before the match and relaid before we could remove the

court.

I should also like to menlion that Grinaker did not build the temporary seating for the match, and had no responsibility for it.

Large township contract at Richards Bay Grinaker Zululand is involved in a sizeable townsh ip contract fo r the

Richards Bay municipality. The value of the undertaking is approximately R6 million and the contract is divided into two sections: Meerensee to wnsh ip and Veld & Vlei township, both residential.

Approximately 12km of roads will be laid with pre-mix surfacing.

There will be 24km of kerb and channelling, 415km of stormwater drains, roughly 50km of pipework and va rio us othe r items.

Amadeu Nunes

Amadeu Nunes is alert, likeable

He was born in Portugal in 1932 and went out to Mozambique as a you ng boy. " ln Lo u rengo

lvlarques (now lvlaputo) I went to technical school," he says, "there was nothing else, and lserved my time as a diesei mechanic with Mozambique Railways."

He joined the Grinaker group in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, in 1955 under George Castle and Jack Manson-Sm ith. "Then I was transferred to Malawi. Derek Clitf.

'Van' van der Walt. Dave lvlarais, Lou Gluckman and Joe Bierman were there. I was the mechanic."

He was brought down to South Ajrica in 1966 to become plant workshops f oreman in Durban.

"We had the Shell Refinery and Sugar Terminal contracts under Jh

Peter Nuyten and 'Van' van der Walt," he says, "and we began to establish a base workshop and offlces at Henwood Road in New Germany. Grinaker Plant as we know it today began to form.

George Castle, Jack Saulez and Emil Gebhardt ran the operation in the Transvaal and I kept things going in Durban."

He still 'keeps things going'but now as managing director of Grinaker Plant (Coastal) and also serves on the board of Grinaker Construction (Coastal). "l've seen the company grow," he says, "and one can't compare the old equipment with the modern machines of today. But one bastc principle still applies: one has to develop the right people to maintain the plant. Good maintenance and accurate costing are still the keys to a successful plant operation.

"We have a sophisticated tra in ing programme and I'm a great team man. I now have a group that I've been building up for seventeen years. Our future depends on good people and keeping up with the latest innovations and developments in our f ield. " Amadeu married his wife Gisa in 1955. They h ave fou r daug hters of whom two are married. "l jog every day," he says, "and maybe next year l'll try the Comrades.

I've got a licence tor catching craytish and I p lay hockey for lun - just to be with the guys. But my big thing is karate. " He is a First Dan in karate and gives instruction in the art.

"Karate is good lor concentration and discipline," he says, "and I think it helps one's ability to plan ahead. Do you agree with that?"

When talking to a First Dan one always agrees.

Sue Pout was born in Kenya and joined Grinaker Natal in 1991 as a secretary /typist. "One of my hobbles ls basketball," she says modestly, but in fact she represented Natal for three years. ,'lt's on ly club-level basketball now." she says, "because training lor championships means f our nights a week." "We'll be setting up a home,,'she says, "and we've bought a piece of land as a lirst step."

The late Larry Attwell was in charge o{ our typing pool and actually interviewed me lor the job. Grinaker were sub-contrac-

ln a state of mild inebriation at this year's (or was it last year's) Christmas party, I let myself in for writing my impressions of marriage with a contracts engineer. What an assignment. The impressions are many, varied and

far reaching. I have been lransformed jrom a budding broadcaster to an abject slave to concrete and steel. lt's delinitely insidious.

It all slarted in London when this

charming gentleman turned up on my doorstep and asked me to

accom pany him to the 'local' f or a beer. ln company with some of his more decadent friends, I downed a pint faster than he could down a hall and he was hooked. l've been trying to live up to that first im-

pression ever since. South

African beer is very qassy.

What I did not know till it was too late was that lwas lo be prised away Jrom the BBC and transported nearly 10000 kilometres away to South Alrica ('where?'I said). I was issued with a characteristic engineering type ultimatum: 'either you can marry me and come to South Af rica or remain a spinster and stay in England.' lt was the spinster bit that did it.

So here we are - and there we were. Our tirst stop on the long hot trail was Phalaborwa. Terry was site engineer build ing extensions to Foskor's mill building and I well all the work I could get, being a un iling ual im m ig rant, was a copy typing job with 40

tors and Dave Marais was a name that kept cropping up in the correspo ndence.

Terry spent a lot o1 time with N,4urray & Floberts and Anglo American and is now well and truly with Grinaker. At one time he was in charge oI building a bridge over the Selati River (usually only a dry river bed) to replace the existing low causeway which was impassable when the river decided to function

(usuaily about once a year).

I

remember two com puter consultants from London were staying at the Phalaborwa Motel outside the town and the river came down with a vengeance and they had to charter an aircraft to fly the e ig hteen kilometres to Phala-

borwa Mining Company.

I

couldn't help chuckling at the mental picture of the faces ol head olfice personnel in London

when faced with the expense account: 'one aircralt to get to work

. . .'

Phalaborwa was undoubtedly a revelation to a 'so ph isticated Lond on sec retary bird'('sophisticated?' I hear you ask).

Another memorable event was

when Terry and his doughty German foreman were nearly lynched by the mob at the bridge

site when the wages Iailed to arrive from Johannesburg in time Jor Christmas. Some quick talking on the part of the foreman saved the day and their scalps.

And then there was the farewell

breaklast at the motel for a chargehand not one of our prouder moments.

It was a sad day in February 1968 when we were faced with transfer to Johannesburg where Terry was to be a site engineer on the

Carlton Centre project. Pha laborwa was the best possible

introduction to South Alrica for a city g irl Jrom Europe as there was nothing to compare it was all new. Terry, having been brought up in Kenya, had been in his element. However, the Carlton Centre was also a truly memorable experience in every sense. became really involved. The office block slide was Terry's baby and I could olten be found on the public viewinq platform casting my experienced eye over the progress. They never took my advice however. On concrete days they poured.for a twelve hour stint and allowing for stoppages, setting up and other sundry problems this meant a I

Our dinner party conversation was scintillating Carlton Centre, Carlton Centre and more Carlton Centre.

Then followed ten idyllic years in Cape Town which brought more high rise bu ild ing s. Gardens sho ppin g centre and Baxter Hall to name two then a change of company and fo u r fascinating yea rs as con struction manager on the l\4arina da Gama where we were initiated into the mysteries of dredging and horticulture amongst other things.

Now we are back in Johannesburg and seeing the concrete and g

to think that we were part ol the high rise pioneering days. We saw

the building of the

Carlton Centre, H illbrow Tower, Trust Bank and Standard Bank (how I

loved that circular crane) and

now it's hard to imagine that they

were ever not there. I feel jn a very small way responsible because if I hadn't driven him to work at 4.30 a. m.

Grinaker and turnkey p rojects seems a natural cu lm inatio n of all

this experience. And then there's the Mercedes motor car - it seems we have arrived. The sweat and toil have paid oJJ. ln addrtron to the career. there ts also the domestic aspect of life with an engineer. No house one buys will ever dare to fall down. lt doesn't matter what it looks like so long as it won't fall down. ln Hout Bay I was assured that the house lfancied would shortly be buried beneath a sand dune. Ten years later it's stillthere. We never call the man in for domestic mec h an ical crises. The engineer takes over with wife as plu m be r's/

electrician's/carpenter's mate.

We make a good team and are now intimately acquainted with the workings of most of our appliances. Positive thinking and strict log ic are the keys to success in the matrimony stakes 'l don't know what you do all day you should really organize your time more prod uctively.'

On a clear Friday morning lleft Maritzburg by car to cross the Transkei frontier and visit Doug Sowden's site at Kokstad Jor the Gazette. I was equipped with the usual packet of sandwiches, brace of bananas. bandolier of ballpoint pens and camera.

"Look out for the crusher on the leit of the road," Doug Botha oJ the Camps Drift site had said the night before, "even you couldn't miss it." Sure enough the crusher appeared and just then someone ran into the road waving a sign of some sort. lt must be difticult to make a living as a roadside salesman in this part ot the world I thought as my car brushed his clothes on its way past.

Richards Bay to Cape Town is more than far enough on a bi-

cycle. Yet, even as this article was going to press, Roy was busy

doing something lar bigger. He and Rex Henderson, a specialist surgeon from Empangeni who was on the Cape Town ride, are making a spectacular dash down United States. This pedal power supermarathon will take them all the way lrom top to bottom, Irom Seattle to San Diego.

The scenic value of this ride should be considerable. However, a brief look at their proposed schedule reveals that this is no sightseeing jaunt at a leisurely pace. Some of the daily distances are prodigious. lt will be hard going day alter day with severe demands on physical end u rance.

There is evidence that they planned the trip meticulously and were well trained for a tarmacmelting pe r,fo rmance. We will prevail on Roy to give us a lull account ol the journey for the next issue oI the Gazette.

On Sunday 6l\4arch the results oJ the remaining league games

were: Grinel 7 Cape 0, Natal 3 Transvaal 1. Zululand 6 Precast2, Concrete Construction 2 North 0.

The league was over, with Grinel

winner and Zu lu lan d ru n ner-u p in the blue section, and Natal winner

and Concrete Construction runner-up in the red section.

After lunch which, as last year, was provided by the Boulevard Hotel, the knock-out section sta

"How does Grinel manage to do it every time?" the group chairman seems to be saying

lield the great battle for 5th to 8th places took place and ended as follows: North beat Precast 3-2 to take sth place and Transvaal took 7th place by beating Cape 4-2.

Monday dawned bright and clear, with a s lig ht wind f rom the west blowing across the grandstand and field.

Perfect, except that there is a brickyard to the west of the stadium, and bricks make dust, don't they, or is it the other way round? Oh well, a ihoroughly gritty lvlonday morning was enjoyed by all. Play-oft for 3rd and 4th place was between Grinaker Concrete Construction and Zululand, with Concrete Construction, voted the most improved team, walking ojl with third place and a creditable score ol 5-1.

Then there was panic. Ten minutes to the f in al, all our V. LP.s seated (duslily), and no referee.

He just did not arrive possibly he is still wandering around in the dust looking for the field. Help arrived in the form o1 National Professional Soccer League referee Tom Grindlay, who had handled the semiJinal. and the final kicked off as planned at 10 a. m.

Try as they might, Natal had no answer to Grinel's big quns, and Natal went down 5-1 .

another tournament, and we can relax for another year. But can we? The news is that Denis Brown and Gino Parmeggiani have been given the rare distinction of having to organize the 1984 tournament. This great honou r has been conferred on them due to their love of the game and unflagging energy, and the fact that Paul van Dyk and I are tired.

Alter an exhausting morning oJ sport, everyone enjoyed a delicio us lu n ch. This was f ollowed bY the prize-giving, a disco, and of course lots of liquid reJreshment. l\4ost people managed to d rag themselves away by about 7P.m after a most enjoyable day.
