Foreword.

HERE comes a time when the development of a school like ours needs not only a connecting link between its past and present students, but a medium for the expression of its ideas, and perhaps, ideals, and a school magazine seems to afford such opportunities. In publishing this first issue I feel that at least a good start has been made and an institution founded which will help to foster that sense of "esprit cle corps" and school tradition which is so essential to any school of repute. Whatever the editoriall committee has achieved in the first attempt I feel certain that its efiorts will be appreciated and from this sma1l beginning a magazine will grow which will be welcomed by all as a valuable bond between the past and present students.

Perhaps this initial efiort will embolden some of the old students to send us details ctf the past history of the schoola history of which I am sure the present scholars will be pleased to hear and be proud to remember.

To those who may be prone to criticise I would state that all articles are the unaicled work of the children-even to the illustrations and cover design and I am proud to be allorved to wish the venture ali success, both in this and in future issues.

THE B. G. SCHREIBER HOUSE CUP. I N August last year Mr. B. C. Schreiber of Hluhluwe presentI .d the School with a magnificent trophy to be competed for annually. We are truiy grateful for this gift and take

this opportunity o{ thanking him.

It r,r'as decided that the Cup should be arvarded to the House which r,r'as best all-round, both academic and sporting acl-rievements being taken into consideration. Five points were an''arded to the winning Honse in each department of sport: rugby, cricket, hockey, tennis and athletics, and five points r,vere awarded to the winning llouse in each class in the school. For the class work the class positions of the maximum equal number of children from Pearsons and Shepstones in each class were added up and the House with the smallest total gained the points for that class.

Last year competition for the cup was very keen. pear. son's_scored heavily in the sports department but Shepstone's outwitted them in the examinations and managed to win the cup by a margin of ten points.

RUGBY HOUSE MATCHES. The First House Match was piayed on April 19th. It was won by Pearson House, for whom Sonnekus, Maud and Steenkamp scored. N{acKenzie scored for Shepstone }Iouse.

The Second House Match r,vas played on April 26th., and it was won by Shepstone House by 6 points to 3. Theunissen and Riddell scored for Shepstone's and Sonnekus for Pearson llouse.

The Third Flouse Match was piayed on the 28th of April and Shepstone House again proved victorious by 3 points to nil. A penalty was awarded against Pearson House and Smit promptly put it over. . . The Shepstone House second XV. beat Pearson House 2nd XV. by 11 points to nil. Farrell, Schultz and Leggott scored the tries, one of which Farrell converted

The Fourth House Match was a great fight. It was won

by Pearson's House by 9 points to 5. Sonnekus scored two tries,;and Maud one try for Pearson House and Smit scored Shepstone's House only try, rvhich he also converted.

The Fifth Match proved to be the most decisive of the issue. Shepstone House won by 14 points to 3. Smit (2), Theunissen (1) and Wood (1) scored for Shepstone's. Smit converted one of the tries. Swales scored for Pearson House.

Shepstone House Juniors beat Pearson House Juniors by 16 points to 12. Farrell (2), Vorster (1) and Schultz (1) scored for Shepstone's. Two of the tries were converted by Farrell. Whymark (3) and Steenkamp scored for Pearson's House.

The next Match was won by Shepstone llouse by 11 points to 8. It was a very exciting match and the last try was scored just on time. For Shepstone House Smit scored three and converted one. For Pearson llouse Sonnekus and Swales scored and Steenkamp added the necessary points.

The Seventh House Match was another victory lor Shepstone House by 14 po,ints to 3. For Shepstone Hoise Riddell, Farrell, Smit and Theunissen scored, rvhile Smit con?erted one of the tries. For Pearson House, Harold Smit scored.

The Eighth House Match was a really tough tussle.

Shepstone House won by 13 points to 6. For Shepstone House Theunissen (2) and Smit scored. Smit converted two, and for Pearson's Bozas and Sonnekus scored.

The Ninth House Match was won by Pearson House by 9 points to 7. For Pearson's Botha, Swales and Steenkamp scored while Farrell scored for Shepstone Flouse and Theunissen put over a drop.

The Tenth Match of the season proved to be the closest.

It was won by Shepstone House by 17 points to 16.

Up to this period Shepstone House have won 7 and Pearson House 3 Senior matches. Shepstone House have won both Junior Matches. Shepstone House thus lead hy I20 points to 76.

RUGBY NOTES by "Ilooker."

Eshowe vs. Stanger.

The first match of this season was played on May 1st.

The Eshowe team left here at I2.3O. Stangerwon the toss and kicked off. The {orwards gatheredlhe ball and rushed down field- Steenkamp scored incl Heinie Smit converted. Eshor.ve 5, Stanger 0. The Eshowe pack scored again and again, Heinie Smit converting a few triis. Stanger now scored when Heinie Smit failed to gather and the Stanger forwards scored an unconverted tr-r-.

At this stage, half-time r,vas taken rvith the scote 22--4. On the resumption of play the Eshorve team began to take risks.

However these rvere not success{ul as there were too many individual attempts. Through this many opportunities were lost. At the end of play the score was 33-3 in the {avour of Eshowe.

Eshowe vs. EmPangeni.

The E,mpangeni School's First XV. came here on the Eighth of May. Their team was slightly heavier than the Eshowe side. Theunissen u'on the toss and Eshowe kicked

off r.vith the siight breeze. Claus scored from a line out a{ter about ten minutes of play the goal kick {ailing. Rawlinson was the next to score alfter a good three movement. The score now read B--O in Eshowe's favour. Before half-time Streek and Tlleunissen scored making the score 1+-4.

Straigirt after half-time 'lheunissen sco'red a try which he himself converted. Eshorve 19. Empangeni nil. Eshowc norv began to show a marked superiority. They combined rvell and scored regularly. At this stage Anclerson of Empangeni had to retire from the g'ame. The high lights of the game were Streek and Piet Lyles combination and the manner in which Farrell dummied several of the defenders to score.

Wood put up a solo run to score far out while Nathan intercepted near 1.ralf-way to score under the posts.

The Eshowe line had never been in danger. The final score. was 55-4 in Eshowe's favour. Tries were scored by Theunissen, Streek and Nathan (3 each) Wood 2 and Farrell Claus and Rawlinson one each. Theunissen converted tr'vo tries and a penalty and F arrell converted three tries.

Eshowe Juniors vs. KearsneY.

Two teams from Kearsney visited us ron May 15th.

Kearsney was much heavier than the Eshowe XV. and although ihey defended well the result was inevitably in Ke-arsney'J favour. The first haif was very even and ended 3--4 in Kearsney's favour.

Eshowe pressed hard on resumption and were unlucky not to score. Kearsney was very weak in converting for they missed several sitters. The final score 12--O cannot be called a true reflection o{ a good game.

The Senior Kearsney Match (Home)' "Oh the forwards formed a scrum' And the half back put it in, From the half back to the centre, The centre to the wing.

And the wing he scored a try That is part of Eshowe School's rugby song but it wa.-1 unfortunately, the wings of the opposing side who did all the scoring. .The scrum half position was at first filled by Theunissen and then later by Wood and Steenkamp. lheir efforts were {ruitless. Smit the school scrum-halif was unfortunately unable to play, his leg giving him troubie. Maud always good on defenie was another absentee. He was suffering fr;m 'Malaria. We therefore had to play two juniors, Wooa and Farrell. They both played centre and although they did their best they were too light to cope with the Kearsney threes.

Of the Kearsney sicie Bazley at centre was outstanding while their fuil-back played r,ve1l. Their threes moved well but the wings lacked thrust. Of their forwards no one was outstanding, aithough Lowe su#ered {rom Mackenzie's heavy tackling.

Smit at full back for Eshowe was as steady as usual.

Sonnekus livened the game up by standing and handing ofi three rvould-be tacklers in succession. l'4ackenzie was outshowed up well standing in the forwards while Liversage -23--O in favour of in his Hrst match. The final score was Kearsney.

Eshowe vs. Stanger. from Stanger came here- It was a a team On sth June very scrappy game with Eshowe team on top. Tl-rey were winning thb scrums but the threes were not up to their usual standard. Theunissen was the only one to distinguish himself and he deserved his two tries one of which he converted Farrell converted one. Tries were scored by Wood, Smit and Whymark. Final score 19-3 in Eshowe's favour.

Kearsney's Juniors won 27-4.

CRICKET NOTES. By "Shepstonian."

The second half of the 1936-37 cricket season was a very poor one for Eshowe School. Only tr,vo matches were played; one by the First Eleven and one by the Juniors. Only one match was played against Kearsney College owing to the fact that it rained on the day that the first match had to be played.

On the 27th of February the Juniors paid a visit to Empangeni. Eshorve batted first and \\'ere soon in difficulties, as four rvickets were dou'n for nine runs. Bozas and Farrell then rnade a stand. Eshowe managed to make 35, to which total Bozas contributed 12 and Farrell 9.

Empangeni fared no better in their first innings as they were all out for 20. Anderson with 5 rvickets for 8 runs lvas the best Eshowe bowler.

In tlreir second innings Eshorn e nacle 129. Bozas with a hard hit 5.5 and Harold Smit with 20 were the chief scorers.

E,mpangeni only managed to scrape together '% runs in their second innings. Weightman wtrth 14 runs was the chief scorer. and Anderson with 6 wickets for 15 runs was again Eshowe's best bowler. Eshorve rvon by 118 runs.

On March 20th Eshowe First paid a visit to Kearsney College. Eshowe batted first and rvere all out for 35. S."vales with 16 runs to his credit had the highest score. Smith the College fast bowler took 7 wickets for 23 runs.

Kearsney was given a good start by its opening batsmen Jacobs and Robinson who made 22 and 20 respectiveiy. Smith, rvho was not at all happy lvhen facing Sr,vales or Maud managed to collect 23 runs. Kearsney declared at 1@ for 6 and sent Eshorve in again.

When stumps were drarvn Eshowe had 42 runs for 9 wickets. The match was an easy victory for Kearsney.

During the season three House Matches were played.

The first match was a draw as rain set in (lucky for Pearson House). The second match was an easy victory for Pearson's by 78 runs. The third match lvas lvon by Shepstone llouse by

runs, so points ended evenly.

HOCKEY, l937-Dorothia Fusslein.

After Easter the Hockey season was once more commenced with the usual vigour and prospects qf plenty of matches, hopes of victory and lovely trips on the lorry- But before all-this there was a great deal of work to be done as we clid not have last year's invincible team (did you know that the lst XI. never lost a match in 1936) you see there were only five left,

We were very sorry to lose Joyce Liversage who was a very staunch and reiiable left back. Beatrice Mar6 at the beginning felt very lost as centre hal{ since both Moira Farrell ind Ruth Corbyn who played right and left half had also left, so breaking up that combination. The forward line was also very empty ai Hazel Weinberg had left (she played right inner) Darvn Handley also dropped out so leaving us rvith out a capable leit wing. I have reserved till last our greatest loss, that of June Norgaard, lvho was our captain for the last two years. She played a neat game at centre, scoring whenever possible.

Mr. Getliffe, who had proved a very encouraging and efficient coach for the past Jrears, handed over the hockey to Miss Flook (an excellent player herseif) who braveiy fought to raise the standard of our hockey once again. ..

Our first match was played in Eshowe on April the 24th r,vhen we met the Eshowe Ladies Team and to our great surprise we rvon, the score being 2-1.

On the 28th of April Shepstone House defeated Pearson

llouse by 5-1.

With these small encouragements we started off to meet Oakford Priory at Verulam on May 8th. Mr. Getliffe kindly consented to drive Mr. M. Jacob's lorry down for us and Miss Cheesman accompanied us on that enjoyable trip' It was rather bumpy going but after a short stretch of our iegs we were eager and ready to begin. After the match in which we were fortunate enough to d.efeat Oakford Priory by a narrow margin of 2-L we went from the field to spend a happy afternoon at Oakford Priory School. An inviting spread awaited us and, most of all we enjoyed the delicious cups of hot tea.

After tea we were escorted over the school and then entertained by several of the Oakford girls who showed us that

they were equally at home at the piano as on the hockey field' Very reluctantly did we climb onto that lorry to start our return journey. In fact the only reason that goaded us to leave was that we had a victory to report at home !

On June 15th we met Stanger on our field and enjoyed a fast game in which we were able to turn the score to 6-3 in our favour.

By the working of Mr. Fearon a school debating society been formed., On March Izth, 1937, the foundation meetwas held in the School Hall.

After the elections had been made, a hat, containing various subjects, was passed round and ali drew luckily or unluckily. The number attending this meeting roused hopes of forming a strong society.

At the next debate G. Riddell spoke for Health against V. Gebers who supported Learning. D. Fusslein spoke also for Heaith and J. Livingstone for Learning. After an evening of keen argument the supporters of Health decided that Learning was better.

Our next debate, on April 16th, r,vas an Afrikaans one.

The speakers being W. Steenkamp and H. Smit, for "Dorpse Lewe," against S. Smith and D. Gielink for "Plattelandse Lerve." Country r,von the evening', "Which is Mightie4., the Pen or the Sword?" was our next subject. The Pen was supported by B. Claus, and R. Gebers, and the Sword by P. Nathan and B. Mar6. The majority voted for the Pen. Our next meeting was held on the 22nd May, the subject being, "Which has been more useful to man, the Ox Wagon or the Car?" The speakers for the Wagon being F. Streek and D. Gielink, and those for the Car D. Fusslein and J. Livingstone. More were faithful to the ox-wagon.

On Friday evening, June 4th, rve held a musical evening. The programme lvas started by B. Harrison playing a piano-solo. V. Gebers played a violin solo. ]\4r. Fearon sang accompanied by B. Harrison, R. Gebers played a piano solo, after which V. Whymark sang accompanied by W. Newel1.

A short, amusing sketch, entitled, "News," was enacted

by Riddell, Nathan and Smit. Later in the evening the same trio acted "The l{ystery of the Fur Coat."

All heartily took part in the community singing. The evening was finished by dancing. All proclaimed it to have been a huge success.

We hope to see our society grow stronger and l4rger.

TT{E AGRICULTURAL SHOW. The Children's Section.

As usual the children's section was one of the great attractions of the Annual Show. The work exhibited was of a good standard though I do not think it reached that of last year.

The drawings showed originaiity and careful attention

to detail, and the colourings were well chosen. The illus-

trations of fairy tales 'uvere very attractive ; but the few designs exhibited by the school lacked boldness in form and colour.

The sewing r,vas well done on the whole. The judges rvere well satisfied by the class of work shorvn. especially the children's feeders.

This year the school was successful in winning back the cup from Stanger. This cup is presented to the school winning the most points in the inter-school section.

TFIE PLATINUM PENDANT CASE. G. Clayton.

This story, which actually took place, is being written by me, as I was very much concerned rvith the affant, more so than was pleasant.

I was spending my vacation rvith my friend Lionel Barrymore. The Barrymores were extremely wealthy, having an income which ran into I don't knor,v how many figures, and in their possession were several priceless heirlooms. The most valuable of which, both sentimentally and in actual vaiue, was a beautiful pendant case. It was of platinum, encrusted in jewels and inlaid with gold. It r,vas worth at least S 10,000.

It had been discovered by a I3arrymore in the fifteenth century, in a pirate's possession, and had remained in the family ever

s1nce,

I was ieft, with a severe cold, in the house. I spent the day in the house, wandering about exploring the interesting o1d place and eventually the family returned, late in the afternoon.

Lionel and I had gone into the library to sit before the fire and to hear of his experiences that day. We had barely seated ourselves when Mrs. Barrymore, looking extremely in upon us. agitated - "Theburst case," she stammered, "the case is gone !" so it had.

It had vanished during the day from its customary place on the smali table in the drarving room. It must have been stolen. The tv;o servants had been with the family for years and were above suspicion. They could have taken it almost any time.

Suspicion naturally fell on me. I had been in the house all day,I could easily have concealed it. They were too kind to mention a lvord of tl-reir susp:cions. Yet, I know that they thought that I had taken it.

The house was turned upside down in search for it but it did not come to light. t6 One day the family were out and

The next day as I was wandering disconsolately in the garden i decided to go to see if the eggs in a Jackdaw's nest in i nearby tree had hatched. I did so just to get my mind off the beaitly pendant case. I scrambled up and peered inside when som-ething bright caught my eye. It is well known that Jackdaws are altracted by bright objegts. To continue with ihe story I pu{ my hand inside and pulled out a piece of shiny metal, not the pendant case !

The case was discovered a few days later, where it had failen behind the dresser, so I was completely exonerated' But for that unhappy event I spent a most enjoyable holiday.

THE FAIRY QUEEN. Lilian Munks.

The place is a little room. In a co'rner is a clock and near it is a bed. The players are:2 children of about 4 years old and Fairy Queen o{ about 5 or four years old.

The clock strikes eight' lst girl: "Come sister, tis bedtime."

2nd girl: "Lets say our prayers first."

(They kneel and both say in chorus) "Fairies, this very night iarty ur to fairy land so lve can dance with the fairies and gnomes,"

They jump into bed and they pretend to go to sleep'- (A long peiiod pisses and the clock strikes nine and a fairy dances in).

Fairy Queen: "Mortal's fair with white, white hair, Come to fairY land,

Both children awake to find they have been dreaming and their coffee is cold.

WHAT BURNS MEANS TO SCOTLAND. J. Livingstone.

To the Scots Bobbie Burns is not merely a poet but one of their heroes. His writings appeal not only to the learned classes but also to the people li a whole, they understand and feel as Burns felt. He was one of them, the ordinary people and he put to the old Scottish tunes new words which expiessed their desires, hopes, {ears and love' He wrote in undying words rvhat everyone would like to say, a writer wrote recently of him, "lle should be Robert Everyman instead of Bobbie Burns, for he rvrote r'vhat Everyman would if he could."

Burns was of a poor family in Allolvay, he soon went to work as a ploughboy brt .,t.rr at rvork he carried a book of poems; and^ whJle hL followed the plough h9 slnc to-the old iunes iu.h songs as. "To a Nlountiin Daisy," "To a Mouse," and others. SJngs such as these appealed to everyo-ne, people of all trades andlrofessions. His poems seem to flow easily as though they were composed merely for love of what he describei. They contain his ideas about the subjects expressed in a charming way, That he actually did follow the plough is obvious by the way in rvhich he describes the tearing up of the roots of the daisy and the mouse running from man.

From the second poem is taken a line, "The best laid plans of mice and man gang alt agley," this line is in frequent use.

It was Burns rvho wrote the ',vords of the Scots National Anthem, "The Scots wha Ha'e Wi' Wallace bled." For this song and "Auld Lang Syne" Burns' name has become uldying in Scotland. For his writings, January 25th, Burn's Day' is always remembered. A11 Scots have heard of the "Auld Brig" where Burns rvrote so many of his poems about his Jeans, Marys and Annes.

There is scarcely a Scots home which has not some memorial of Burns. A favourite picture being that in which Burns is shown writing in a simple cottage, while an old lady sits spinning on one of-the old wheels. Another is that in which Burn. ii shown sitting in a llumble cottage at work at "A Cottar's Saturday Night." In this poem Burns touchingly describes his life as a boy. Such poems as these must appeal to others besides Scots, Burns is a people's poet all over the world.

He was a democratic writer as we see from that poem "A Man's a Man for a'that." But in the poem "John Anderson my jo, John" Burns certainly touches the llearts of all, even the most cynical.

He r.vrites simply, this must be half the charm his poetry 18

holds. Although nearly all his work is done in the Lorvland dialect, in which he was at home, it is read by all.

There has been no other poet quite like Burns, he represents his country more than any other poet represents his

land. Burns is not only Scottish, he is Scotland.

Lieutenant Tibbetts popularly known as Bones and of the Hussars, make the ideal type- of Hamilton, Captain miithmakers for the reader. Bosambo that roguish chief of the Ochori and reputed "brother of Sandi" as Sanders is known is featured in this book. You lvill remember how magnificently the part of Bosambo was played by Paul Robeson in "Sanders of the River."

The book consists of short stories chiefly consisting of Bones adventures disguised as a native, his period of being a physic and the time when he resolved to become a learned professor and generously imp'artled his knowledge to .the natives causing more harm than good. Of course there is a visit of a crusty colonel who as Inspector of Colonies visits the territory to be called "lVIy dear old Inspector" by Bone9.

The stories are dependant very largely on Mr. Wallace's wide knowledge of African customs and superstitions and the adventures of Sanders and his subordinates make very pleasant reading for both young and old. need

MUSIC AND MUSICIANS.

Among the Greeks, music was one of the chief means of entertaining, though the only instruments were chiefly the lyre and the flute. Tfere had been music before the time of the Greeks. indeed. but it was of the same simple kind. Among the Jews, however, the use of musical instruments seems to have been somewhat more advanced. Music owes much to the church and great advances were made in the art during the Middle Ages.

Modern music owes a vast debt to Bach, a great musician who lived in the middle of the 18th century. The establishment of the major and minor scales, with the octave as a unit. made modulation in any key possible, and so harmony was developed, though it had been practised as far back as

the

Renaissance.

The 18th century, in particular can boast of many great t9

musicians, Beethoven was one who was born towards the end of the century, in I77A' IIe had a very hard life, and his father, who was musical, set him to work at the piano,,and visitors would often see him shedding tears over the key* board.

Beethoven's works for the piano, particularly his sonatas, are the greatest things of their kind ever written. A11 the great composers and pianists regard him as king of composers ior their instrument. So too for the orchestra. Take away Beethoven's nine symphonies, and we should take away the backbone of the orchestra.

While Haydn, another greait composer was dying in Vienna, the Frlnch were bombarding the city' His servants were terrified, but he took it all calmly, and asked to be lifted from his bed to the piano. When he had seated himself, he played his Austrian Hymn three times over, while the guns were thundering outside' At that ."ioe *o*ent, Beethoven was crouching in a cellar with cotton wool stufied in his ears. His hearing had begun to fail, and he was afraid that he would become totally aeit. Think of a musician being deaf ! It was as bad as an artist being blind. Yet Beethoven, in some respects the greatest .J-pot.t that ever lived, did become almost totally deaf.

This helped to make his life unhappy.

compositions and sonatas were composed after he had become deaf, yet they are most beautiful' He developed a vile temper, however, but one can sympathise with him. ' He died in 1827, and never had Vienna seen such a great {uneral as his.

Mozart lived during Beethoven's time. His taste for music showed at a verJ' youthful age' He was only five when he composed a "Minuet and Trio" that much older girls and boyi might play with some effect Jg-d1y. At the ige of ten, he .o-posed the Princess Adelaide Concerto in h6nour of the Priniess Adelaide at the Court of Louis XV. of France. She took an immediate liking to his playing; it seemed incredible to her that a mere boy could be so very clever at the piano. So, to prove his abilities, he set to work there and then to compose this famous Concerto' Mozart composed incessantly, but even successful composition did not pay then as it does.norv. His butcher and baker were often worrying him over his accounts.

Mozart's end was very sad, and it came at last after a long illness. He died so poor that .his remains had to be- gqt in i pauper's grave' No-one worried about the place of his buriai until a long time afterwards, when it was found that nobody could point it out. So Mozart's monument in the 20

His music is as a rule rather sad. this is probably due to the miserable and unhappy life he led. People did-not. at first realise the value of his excelient performances. and rather ig""r.J fri-. In fact they did not-appreciate his music and sfnging in the least. Some of his finest songs were.sold for the"pr"ice of a meal' But as time went on' the public.whom Schribert entertained, at last discovered his wonderful abilities.

But the time for Schubert's glory and fame came rather too late, for he died soon after, ai the age of 32' His life of poverty had been a misery to him,-but he had faced all hardsfrips ina difficulties manfully. .He had always been courteols, despite tire rude and rough treatment he had received from the public. After his death his compositions became world-famous. and his glory is everlasting among musicans of the world.

There were many other lEth century musical genii, besides the ones I have mentioned. But those were the greatest. There was Bach, a wonderful genius for the piano; and Chopin, who can be described as the poet cf the piano, as he *toi. the most poetical, dreamy, 'emotional masterpieces that we are ever likely to hear from that instrument' There strong and grand about him like Beethoven, was nothing **hot" irusic iJof a rather sombre cast, which is Schumann, probably due to his insanity, as .he spent his last years -in an isylumi after trying to drown himself in the Rhine; Liszt, Gieig (a Norwegian), Tschaikowsky, Brahms, Wagner and Menielssohn are-all worthy of our greatest admiration.

Phillips, the Director of the Carl Rosa Opera Company has found South Africans in many instances to be starved musically. But he is trying to lay a safe foundation for the future by getting children to acquire taste for opera, in which case there is no fear o{ it dying out' However, people are already yearning again for -classical music. More ind more people are buying musical instruments, and as a result, a lirger supply has to be imported to supply the needs of the publii. But success in classical music is by-no means easy to achieve, and requires many years of training.

To my mind, classical music will last for a longer period than Jazz. and will, on the whole, be more popular' For one thing. the glory of the classical music, composed by the early Is everlasting. The compositions are not cast aside "o*f,o..tt and forgotten. They are passed down through the gen-9rh"n" beCome world-famous. They cannot die. ations "nd Jazz music, is however, only temporary, the songs and pieces iast for a brief time, and then new ones are introduced and become popular with the people, while the previous ones are left and- forgotten, and only the latest tunes are used and practised.

It seems almost impossible

to live without any music at has wonderful powers over mankind, and can some* times soothe ragged nerves. Often beautiful music has the effect of bringing the listener to the land of imagination.

Pleasant thoughts and sometimes unpleasant ones are brought to mind. Oni's present position and occupation are entirely forgottgn and one is 1ed to think of the future or the past' Not everyone however, is a musician. or is ever likely to be one, but aimost everyone has some taste for music. What a dull and mo,notonous world this would be, if there was no music in it !

STRANGE FACTS ABOUT STRANGE ANIMALS. There are a great number of strange animals in the world but there is a reason for each strange thing. Mother nature provides for all her children. If they were not so well suited to the life which they lead they would soon pass out of the struggle for existence.

A typical example of Mother nature's suiting is shown in the sheep famiiy. The hunya of India is strong enough to fight the tiger, its largest natural enemy. If the tiger had been able to overcome the hunya in a fair fight it would have preyed upon it alone and brought it to extinction. The algari also requires a good weapon to fight attackers. It therefore carries horns 5ft. long. The one-horned sheep also has long horns to defend itself with. Its horns however twist round one another growing closer at the base than at tip. This sheep reminds us of the fabulous Greek unicorn The Zulu piebald sheep has four horns. The second pair growing under the first. The lower pair are shorter and curl round.

The Persian fat-tailed sheep has a tail which grows very fat in summer because it stores up fat for use in the dry season.

The tails gror,'v' to such a size that shepherds make carts for them to leisen the weight and to stop the tails from dragging.

Sheep in cold regions have much longer wool than those in hot lands. There are a great number of strangs cats. At night the fishing-cat may be seen sitting near a river "fishing" with its paw. When a fish comes in reach it scoops it up with its paw and eats it. On a hot day the Siberian tiger will go for a bathe. It is the only cat which is not afraid to swim in water. The fishing-cat and some other smaller cats will put in their pa\,vs or will take a ducking if they are forced by pangs of hunger but the Siberian tiger takes it for fun. The Indian civet has a sort of pouch under its body which contains a waxy substance with a very unpleasant odour. This substance is used to make scent.

There are some strange deer. The musk deer has an 24

unpleasant odour and is the only deer to possess tusks. These 'tusks are over four inches long. It is also known as the hog deer because of the tusks. The moose is a large American deer. It has a piece of skin protruding from the neck. This bell-like skin was thought to be the means by which the moose got wind of its enemies. The reindeer is a wonderful animai. It lives in lands rvhere the moss and lichen on which it feeds is often covered rvith snow. It therefore has sharp

hoofs on its fore feet with which to dig under the snow.

When a herd of reind,eer are feeding it is often that you see only the tail and hind-quarters as ill the rest is down the hole. A reindeer can swim through a r-iver and, after it has shaken itself, be as dry as it was before it entered the water.

This is because it wouid be dangerous to the animal to have water staying on him in such a cold land.

There are many wonderful dogs. The ferrex fox has ears as large as his body and 1egs. These give him a ma.rvellous power of hearing rvhich is required in the African jungle.

The crab-eating dog iives on sl-rell-fish which it catches on the shore when the tide goes out. It scoops them out of their shells with its sharp fore-claw" The bushdog is very low which enables it to run at high speed. through th"e dense undergrowth in which it lives. The dingo is the only Australian animal which is not a marsupial or a monotreme.- It is sometimes tamed by natives {or hunting purposes.

Th.ere are a great number of other strange animals. An example is the Australian platvpus which is sometimes calied natures mixture. It has a bill like a duck, webbed feet like a beaver, hair like a mole and lives in holes with entrances under water. The camel has many strange powers. It has a sponge-like organ which stores water for travelling in the desert. Its nostrils are made in such a way that they can be closed when it is desrred in a sandstorm. If a racoon kills something near a river it rvill take it and dip it in the water before eating. It is the only animal which attempts to "wash" its food. The lemming keeps its numbers in iheck by migration. If there are too many lemmings in a colony half of th_em wili get a mad idea that they must travel and they rush off through the fields and rivers and over mountain ranges.

If they reach the sea they plunge in and swim un,til they drown. The beaver builds dams to live in when the riveri go low. The dam is built when the rainy season is over and the current not so strong and is washed away again the next heavy rains. There are lar too many animais to write about in -such limited space. Natures wild animals call for many volumes of script. As a rule it wiil be noticed that the smalier the animal the larger the increase per annum.

A DREAM. One clay my brother and I were going {or a walk in the

Hluhluwe Game Reserve. Suddenly, as we were walking through some dense bush, we heard a cracking of boughs behind us, and, looking round, we saw a large lion in the undergrowth. We did not wait to admire it's great beauty, but ran off as fast as our legs could carry us.

At last I stopped, panting, after having run a distance the length of which I cannot possibly tell. On looking round I discovered, to my great dismay, that I was lost and that I had become separated from my brother.

After walking about a hundred yards I came to a large tree. Near the top of this tree boughs branched out on all sides, forming a circular platform with the trunk of the tree as the centre. I climbed up, stood on the platform and iooked round for the tree was much higher than the others. But before I could take in much of what I saw, I heard a fearful roar behind me, and when I turned round I saw a large ape. "'What are you doing in my house ?" It roared.

"I-I d-didn't know it was your h-house," I stammered, edging towards the trunk of the tree. Then, before it couid do anything further, I slid down the tree and dashed towards a 1og which was lying on the bank of a nearby river. I jumped on to the log and pushed off. Suddeniy, to my surprise, the log began to move. Then I reaiised that it was a crocodile. I reached up, caught hold of a branch which protruded over the river, pulled myself up, jumped back to the bank and ran off, closely followed by the ape.

Then it was that I met a lion. I stood paralized with fright, for the lion was in {ront, the river on the right, the ape at the back, and the bush, where the ape would be more than a match for me, on the ieft.

Then, just as the lion was going to bite my head off, I woke up' thankfui that it was but a dream' D.N. std. v.

THE MURDER AT MPUSHINI. One hot sunny afternoon when everything except the cicadas seemed to be slumbering in the sultry heat, a young couple were rvalking slowly down the steep gritty hill which leads to the stream which flows around the curve of the hill.

The man had his strong arm around the thin waist of the girl who clung to him like a delicate anemone would cling to a rock. The girl was slim and pretty and anyone could sei that her slender ankles were not accustomed to the bumps of an Eshowe road, but rvith the manly assistance of Jim 26

Huntley she was able to descend the hill in a fairly comfort.able manner.

She turned her pretty face up to her protector's and murmured how pleased she was to have someone so strong to help her through this rough world.

"You know love," she continued "f am too frail to be alone in this world and I need someone like you to help me fight my troubles and to do my accounts' Oh ! how I hate accounts and how they do pile up, but I am glad now that you will look after them sinie I have signed all my money over to you."

"Please darling don't talk of money matters whilst we are on our honeymoon," pleaded Jim, "you know I brought you to Eshowe to escape the noise of this world and to have a quiet holiday."

Chattering thus the two happy people wended their way down to the stream and along the path which disappeared among the tall blue trunks of the whispering gums. I can assure you that when they had entered the bush his arm which encircled her waist increased its pressure and she snuggled closer to l.rer brave protector, After the breathless scramble down to the falls the two reclined on a huge grey boulder and watched how the stream seemed to break up into a million diamonds as it crashed into the pool below.

"Poor little stream." whispered the girl "how little it realised when it glided gently under the shady trees that it would soon be hurled over the precipice to that deep pool be1ow."

When the man heard these words he got up hastily and quickly crossed to the edge of the other fall and peered gloomily into the depth. He shrugged himself like one forcing himself out of a dream and he turned to the girl and ordered her over to him.

"Oh no !" she cried startled "I am too frightened to go there and you know rvhat that notice says up by the rustic bridge."

"Don't be a fool child" he cried harshly, "come here !

Do you hear?"

The girl was surprised at the rapid change in his manner so she rose and lvent over to him but as soon as she looked over the edge she drerv back with {ear and walked back a few paces.

NINE DAYS UNDER CANVAS. An event of great importance occurred in the July holiboyJ went clmping at Sinkwazi Beach' The loiry which conveyed us there was filled up to its full loading capicity. The. most important items on the lorry-"'vere fo.od and fishing rods. What wonders we intende.d doing with these IndiJn Canes bf ours' Some of us actually forecast the kind of fish we lvere going to catch' However, all the fish we caught were out of tins.

The first day in camp was one of great activity' and that night we turned in at 1 p.m. a terrible mistake only foun-d out n&t morning. We woke up at what we thought to be 5 a.m. and chased Clayton and Gebers out of the tent to make us coffee as they were cooks for the day. They cursed us from the bottom of their hearts. Bless them ! About an hour after coffee we promptly demanded breakfast, threatening them with all sorts of horribie tortures if the porridge was lumpy. We found out a little later that we had had coffee at 2 a.m. and breakfast at 3.30 a'm, no wonder it was rather cool out of our blankets.

The food in camp was of a fairly high standard, however it contained certain vitamins which made certain members of our camp behave in a rather peculiar manner. One day I walked into the kitchen and found Gebers and Clayton making each other dance by throwing our table knives at one anbther. The food also caused Ossie to behave in a barbaric manner in his sleep. Ossie would suddenly jump up and rush round the tent. We found that he had dreamt that a girl with six inch fangs was biting his neck.

It was discovered that someone had been helping himself very liberally to our condensed milk, so two of us set a bait.

We half filled an empty tin with a mixture of flour and paraffin. To our surprise almost the whole camp was caught out.

One morning just for a joke we doped a certain boy's cofiee with Glauber salts. He was seen no more for the rest of the day.

Four'of us had a terrifying experience, when one boy drove us up to the store for provisions in Maud's "bug."

Instead of changing into low going up a hill he changed into reverse and we neariy ended up in the lagoon.

We actually had cocktails in camp one day. The recipe 34

was as follows; orange juice, lemon juice, paraffin, hot water,

salt, pe_pper and black sugar. Oni mouihful was enough for me I nearly saw pink elephants.

There are many interesting events which I could describe but I am afraid the magazine censors would be horrified.

SOMETHING ABOUT THE TEACHERS. Mr. Newell.

Too many brains for my liking. Can never catch him with any of our tricks. He is very hard on those who don't wear hats and the proper school ties. Plays Golf and can still bowl a good ball.

Mr. Scholtz.

There are two things for which he lives. They are Rugby and Golf. All the successes of the Eshowe School at Rugby are due to him.We have noticed that Golf has definitely improved his vocabulary. His handicap is being decreased while his vocabulary is being increased. rMr. Getliffe.

Has joined the select band of "Hitched-up ones." He often exceeds the speed iimit in his tin can contraption. A good fellow with the gun on Sports day. Is often heard to use the expression "Rats." Plays hockey, ("Well saved Sir !") ; tennis ("What a service !? !") and cricket ("Gosh ! did you see that off-break ?") used to play the Royal and Ancient game of golf, but gave it up as he said he would have to edit a new dictionary if he carried on. He has been transferred to Durban.

Mr. Fearon.

A good history teacher, but is a born drilling instructor.

He should have joined the army ("Swing your arms in front!"). A good stroke player in both tennis and cricket.

Has learnt to bowl a googly which comes ofi sometimes. His stirring speeches heard in the Std. V. classroom every Wednesday tlorning are enough to move crowds of blockheads.

He is very interested in Amateur theatricals, school tennis, the School Debating Society and the School Magazine.

Mr. Schultz.

A great exponent of the art of being able to give donkey bites. Beware you slackers on the Rugger field. His car is one of the "Leaping Lena" type. Keeps the school garden in quite good c,ondition but cannot prevent the carrots and radishes from disappearing. Plays Rugger, tennis, cricket and hockey. Should do well at Bowls as he is married.

Mr. Goodwin.

Mr. Getlifie's successor. Comes from Glenwood. Thinks there isn't enough or good enough apparatus in our Science lab. His hearse (N.D. 6410) will come in very handy when we visit Kearsney. Plays an excellent game of tennis (if you can call it tennis). He is very strong. Broke a rusty screw on a retort stand clamp, so behave ! ^F J/

Miss Symons.

Great on Geography. Too great for my liking. Owns a car which still looks quite respectable and plays tennis.

Miss Cheesman. $ood English teacher. Very fond of poetry which is the Matric classes favourite subject. Plays a good game of tennis. I put my money on her in the staff race, but as I stood to rvin a good sum of money, the race was abandoned.

Miss Flook.

Plays an excellent game of hockey. I wanted to say more about her but the magazine committee would not let me.

Nuff said.

Miss Russell.

A very gentle young lady. Knows how to handle genuine "babies," but has no mercy on the older ones. Extra singing lessons is her favourite hobby.

Miss Stolp.

Has also been transferred. Should never have been a domestic Science teacher as she let the cakes burn. History is more her mark, as she tried to copy Alfred Miss Hancock.

Has excellent lungs for a teacher. Is feared by all the children in the Junior School. Why I don't know ! I believe in the saying that the female of the species is the more deadly. but this fair one is an exception. Male members of the staff will even blush when they read this as they realise how close my guess was.

AN APPRECIATION OF NEWBOLT'S POETRY. I like Newbolt's poems best, because many of his poems

tell about patriotism and love of one's country, about honesty and uprightness. His poem, "Clifton Chapel" tells about many of ihese. In it, Newbolt writes about a man talking to his son, who wishes him to grow up as a gentleman,. to be sporting and not only to enter in sport and competition for the prize and wealth, but for his own enjoyment-"To love the game beyond the prize." If he should lose a game or_ a fight-, he should not be depressed and annoyed so that he would despise his opponent for beating him. If he should chance to win a game or a fight. the {ather advised him not to feel too proud of himself and condemn his opponent, but to honour him for his hard work."To honout, while you strike him down, The foe that comes with fearless eyes."

This poem is chiefly about the main facts in life; for instance, Niwbolt says that the Lord gave us on earth, Pain 38

as our friend, and we have

to bear all pain that we experience,

manfully. He also gave us Death, from which we must not shrink. It is the only thing we can really expect on this earth, as it will surely come one d"y"\Mho gave His children pain for {riend, And Death for surest hope of life."

In another of his poems, "The Only Son," he tells of a man whose son had gone to war, standing by the window in the candle-light rvith the list of those kilied in the war, in his shaking hand. He read that his son had been killed.

Although he was very sad, he was nevertheless proud of his son to have been killed in action in a battle."A great fight and a good death" he muttered; "Trust him he u'ould not fail !"

But the man's wife thought differently. The loss of her only son, made life not worth living.* "What of the chamber dark where she was lying, For whom all life is done?"

She had brought him up and educated him, and all this was now valueless, and she was very, very sad."Within her heart, she rocks a dead child, crying, My Son, my little Son."

THE CALL OF AFRICA. J. Tipping-Wood.

There came a sharp rat-tat-tat on the door a few months ago and on opening it, I found the postman who said there was a letter for me. I retired, very mystified to my room, to read this official looking document, when I opened it I received the biggest shock I have ever had' It was a letter from a larvyer, telling me that my uncle had just left me two thousand pounds; but, horvever, there was one obligation, and that was that I should take a two months trip to England.

As a matter of fact I was getting rather tired of the little dorp where I rvas living so this was a marveilous chance.

The next few days were spent in packing, equipping myself and settling all my affairs. I was really rather glad when all this hard work was ovet.

I sailed two days later and each view I caught of a new land I seemed to get another thrill. I arrived in England and spent the first month touring round. It was simply delightful. Perhaps the thing that strikes a South African most about England is the manner in which the fields are so carefully divided-by lvalls of stone or by hedges. It reminds one some what of a patchwork quilt. Another thing so different is that one little hamlet practically joins another and there is nothing of the wide empty spaces in Africa.

The stretches of grass are also differe.nt; they are an emerald green, never able to be achieved under the fiery glare of the South African sun.

Half-way througl-r the second month I felt a wild desire to see Africa. A thick pea-soup {og enveloped London and to throw off this restlessness I put on my mackintosh and went for a walk, I had been walking, sunk in deep thought, for several minutes when my eye caught a gleam of orange in

a nearby window. I walked up to it and my heart gave a wild leap when I saw displayed in their full glory a branch

of beautiful

aloes.

by a sudden mistiness and I completely forgot the teeming millions tound me as I stood there.

My mind wandered back to the wide, ionely veld scattered with aloes, to the hard brown stones, to the wide empty spaces and to the Drakensberg clearly siihouetted against a flawlessly blue sky, with the sun beating relentlessly down on them, and in me welled up a great fountain of patriotism. I tried to push this away from me but before the month was out I had booked my passage back to Africa.

I embarked at Southampton on the second of July and I felt an urge to hasten the boat as much as possible. I chafed at every delay and was not at ail happy until one unforgetable night I saw the Southern Cross which I had always regarded as insignificant slanting in the sky. At every old landmark my heart gave an extra throb and I was terribly thrilled when at last Durban hove in sight.

I disembarked as soon as I could and caught the first available train home. Only when I was snugly settled in my little home again rvas I perfectiy hrppy.

So it was then I realised as I watched the sun burn brightly on the waving acres of cane that the Call of Africa cannot be disobeyed.

WILLIE THE WAGTAIL. B. McKenzie.

The early morning mists were rapidly chased out of the garden by the sunbeams which appeared like searching fingers amongst the bedded plants. On tl-re rvestern side of the garden, facing the rose tinted clouds, stood a mellow old ivycovered wall.

From the depths of the ivy came the twittering of awakening birds and presently a hen wagtail splashed out of the ivy and alighted on a tall {ox-glove; shaking the dew drops from the pink bells. The rvagtail preened herself for awhile and then 40

hopped on

to the lawn to skip about catching the

dancing

flies.

She returned to the rvall and was met by three plump little wagtails who in their eagerness to obtain the food had left the nest and scrambled out on to the ivy. The hen returned to the lawn and was joined by the cock. The pair fed the young until they were satisfied.

As soon as each little bird's crop was full, he returned to the nest and was just dosing to sleep when one of the parents came in and pushed one of the protesting fledglings out of the nest and over the edge. Willie was the first to be trea,ted in this way and when he found he r,vas in the air he opened out his little wings to find that by flapping them he could sail

through the air in a similar manner to his parents; although he 'found that his crop seemed to pull him earthwards.

After his first flying adventure his wings grew stronger.

He would follow his parents about. always ready to open his yellorv beak.

As weeks rolled by Willie was able to fly equally as rvell as his parents-and caught all his own food, He found that with five wagtails feeding in qne garden the food was not so plentiful as before. His parents noticed this as well and so one day when Willie met his father on the bird bath, the larger bird immediately set upon him and drove him away, chasing him into a nearby field.

Willie flew on over the field, across a road, down to another field where a sparkling stream gurgled its way among boulders. Willie alighted on one of the boulders and with dancing tail and feet he ran down to the water to catch the little flies rvhich skipped the ripples.

One day while Willie was feeding as usual he heard the liquid notes of a hen wagtail com5 floating up the stream.

The sound of this note awakened something in Willie; for the first time since his babyhood he felt the yearning for a mate for now his colouring rvas jet black.

Wiliie flipfled dor,vn the stream and with a call of welcome he landed on a boulder near the other wagtail. He whistled to her and extended his tail to show off to her. He ran feeding with her, snapping up the insects and flitting from boulder to boulder.

They played together _py the stream for many a day until one day the hen started to collect grass and carry it to a grass covered iank where she wove it into a little cup-shaped nest. Willie was interested and assisted in collecting the grass. He collected wool from a nearby fence, to line the nest.

The hen had felt the call of motherhood and 4l

was not

long before a little white egg iay in the nest. This went on until there were four, snow-white eggs' Willie felt lonely with his mate sitting but she came off several times a .day to feed. They flitted happily around but had no time to play now.

One day while ihe was away a boy collecting eggs sp-ied the white eggs. Fortunately he rn'as a nature lover and left them so threi tittle chicks l-ratched after twenty one days of sitting.

W;tti. and his mate now had a busy time since most of the day was spent in feeding the youngsters. It was at this time that Chirek, the Kingfisher arrived at Willie's haunts' One day while seeking grubs Willie was startlea- -t .y f flash of blue and a harsh iry. He froze; there sat Chirek with his red spear-shaped beak straight out and his blue back glistening.

Willie soon got used to Chirek. He often saw him swoop and return with a fish to his perch where he beat its life out.

Soon Willie's three fledglings were ready to leave the nest and now the fledflings followed him about till they tired.

Soon they were 6ig enough to fend for themselves and again Willie experienced the joys of freedom and a new courtst ip. NIany hippy summers were spent in this way- When thi; little chita ciosea his eyes it rvas done with a iittle sigh for lTe had lived the life of the free and had lived happily.

If you have enjoyed this tale as I hope you have let me tell you a way in which to gain even more enjoyment and that is by going to streams such as I have described and hiding yourielf amongst the bushes to watch Willie and Chirek at their pleasures.

By doing this you will learn to love the wild and hate all those puny human beings rwho destroy it" Nature is beautiful and just as we would not destroy "Mona Lisa" or any other beautiful work why should we kill a bird for the mere lust of it?
