I congratulate all those in and out of the school who have contributed to the production of this magazine, in particular Mr Walters, who has been resposible for it this year lhope for you the reader it will be worth the trouble to peruse it.

It reflects some of the diverse activities of this school that makes this school, like most schools approximate to a microsm ol the society inwhich it exists. May you derive some pleasure from recognising people you know and reading of their involvement in the programme of activities.

At the beginning of the year we welcomed Mr Johnstone from Kloof High School as our new Headmaster. Our new Heads of Department were Mrs Peters who has returned to us from the Eshowe Junior School and Mr Brown.

New teachers are Sue Clare, Caren Hardwick, Sandy Hailpern, Olana Kelly, Sandy Matheus, Lil Price, lngrid Thcile, Lynda Short, Mossie Malan, and Ruth De Broglio who returned to us. (There must be something appealing about us!)

At the Giil's Hostel Miss Nothnagel, Mrs Tonkin and

Mrs

Hoekstra were new while Mrs Smith and Mrs Dreyer had newly arrived at the Boy's Hostel. The great change-over of hoStels has taken place and everyone has settled in like the rain and the builders.

The staff really enloyed the Matric Dance this year with its continental atmosphere which made most of us long to be on our travels again. Miss Hardwick and her partner at one stage held the floor most entertainingly This column should really be headed Eshowe High School Marriage Bureau because this year getting engaged seems to pleasantly contagious as no less than seven have been -on very people our staff have done so and others would seem to be as Mrs Bennett in 'Pride and Prejudice' would say, "just on the brink."

such a delectable thing as leave. Miss Kelly's Graham Deall is in Rhodesia at Cheredzi and they are joyously planning to work together for the Lord.

Miss Coetzee's Doug Cooke works at the Prawn Farm at Amatiis

kulu and is delightfully local and very loyal, attending

school functions.

Miss Short's Rob Stuart you all know. Did the Drummies and the Drummers help to cement that friendship and are they planning to provide an archway of batons and bugles at their wedding and will Sandy wear a white bow?

Miss Hinze's Danie Franzsen is also local and they will be

staying in Eshowe. We are all looking forward to another marvellously arranged warm-hearted German wedding in Paulpietersburg.

Mr Murcott's Sharon Theron is a teacher too. lt's only about 130 kilometres to Durbs but it must otten have seemed much longer.

There's no prize but do you know which loved ones live in Newcastle, Empangeni, Eshowe, Howick, Durban, Bloemfontein, Pietermaritzburg, Melmoth, Amatikulu, Chiedzi?

Sandy Matteus (no, not Matthews) really has the right idea about settling into a rural community. She has identified herself with our activities, being very active at the Show, the Junior School Fete as well as in Church affairs.

- as a Unholy Alliance. We welcome this because misgiving after all both groups are interested in the children. Mr Ouann and Mrs Eckard came with us on our Std 8 History Tour and Mr Milne took a trip to the Berg, and other parents are planning

to help us in the future.

l'm in a statistical mood. Do you know that our married staff have 23 children under 12,4 at High School and 10 that have left school and two even have grandchildren. (and these figures don't include those for the Matrons or our Bantu staffl)

ln case the children feel theirs is the perogative of writing exams, 7 of the staff are doing so this year.

More and more of our staff and their f riends are going on tours.

Mr Walter's Cara has the right idea. She stops to pick flowers when she's very tired. According to the children waterfall's can be quite hazardous places as Mr Walters will agree.

The Maythams took children on a Wilderness Trail and when the moment of truth arrived when a rhino charged he had to

decide whether to rescue his wife, Gail, Lazlo or climb a tree (and sometimes trees can be woefully inadequate even for a sloth!) He and Gail are planning to leave for overseas at the end of the year, and their plans are deliberately and delightfully vague. Like Mr Macawberthey all "just wait forsomething to turn up."

Parades are serious affairs with familiar figures marching with unexpected pomp and circumstance, hair significantly shorter, watched with tolerant affection by the School. lt is lovely to belong to an institution like a school with its feeling of togetherness (sometimes rather too much togetherness like

towards the end of a long term at hostel!)

Mr Kock seems to have collected some magnificently black eyes this year. (Rugby is a dangerou! game, isn't it?)

Mrs Leathern will now be able to drive as fast backwards as she does forewards with her beautiful new Golf which has a windscreen wiper at the back too. (How would you like to come home one Friday afternoon to find your husband has bought you a brand new car as a complete surprise?). lncidentally she and Mike have now taken up motor-bike iaunts. Nowondershe looks so young. Mrs Johnstone has fitted happily and most attractively into the lile of our school and gives her husband very loyal support.

Staff children seemed to enjoy our Sports Day almost as much as we did, sporting house colours and taking over field event areas as soon as they were no longer officially required, the long jump pit being especially popular.

Some of the staff and children are helping with a Story Hour at the local library and I can tell you when you are making

marsh-mallow men sticky little hands get no better when washed, because they become wet sticky little hands.

PS. The handiest household appliance in Eshowe has ceased to be- a Rotary Brush but has become Johnstone's Overalls.

Senior Girls Hostel Report

1978 Matric Dance Amidst all the other activities at the start of the year we managed to get our fund-raising going. We were fortunate to get help and co-operation from most of Std. 9's. The' Show was our greatest source of income but don't mention a hamburger or a hotdog to any of the -Std. 9 girlsl Without much trouble we chose the silvery theme of "A Night in Paris." We had two weeks to change the bare school hall into a Parisian street scene. Thanks to the skilful work of our artists and the work of all the other standard nines, we managed to complete our decorations in time. The |.anterns, the boys, lined the streets and the Boulevqrds proTqdq vided 9.y the places to sit. Thyrd Eye provided our ,music, (which was a bit loud for the teachers); but it created a friendly atmosphere. The housecraft girls under the supervision of Miss Coetzee and Mrs Brown prepared a delicious buffet supper. The rain certainly did not wash the dance out, and our diligent waiters and waitresses were kept busy

May Long Weekend Hike Once the cars were packed and the hiking members seated in one of the two vehicles, we were finally able to leave We were very fortunate as we were able to use one of the school Hi-Aces which was a great asset, as transport is one of the Hiking Club's problems The teachers were Mr Walters, Miss Short, Miss Mackay and

We set out at I for our days stroll We scrambled up a 75o slope and boulder-hopped our way up a dry river bed to the snow There were beautiful icicles Soon there were snow balls flying in all directions. We had lunch and started on our way back The easiest way down the 75' slope was to slidel On arriving back at the camp we found three other hikers Some of our members had a chat with them before they decided to move on A bath was braved by all members The water was really f reezing but refreshing, although it took you about half an hour to thaw out Firewood was collected, supper made and games

We bumped into the three hikers on the way We climbed in the opposite direction to the previous day and were able to observe Natal for many kilometres around. On the way back we stopped at a stream and had lunch and swam and had a bath in the sunlight That night the wind was blowing and it made us think that it was the coldest night ln the bedroom that night various members dared to tell scary ghostie stories. The howking wind in the background almost seemed to make them real.

The next morning everybody lay in bed as we had a rather difficult walk back Once out of bed we managed to clean up

On the way to Drakensburg Gardens we could see snow on the mountains ahead We were unable to go to Piilar Cave but could go to the Sleeping Beauty Cave We set off and we seemed to cross the river many times We came to one place and were rather baffled The path forked.

had found the cave The path up was rather slippery We finally made it and set about to explore The cave was a

The Speech and Drama Club was asked to stage something "light" for the Mannequin Parade, and so ti fit in with the theme, the seniors did the "Pied Piper", which was a greater

success than we had anticipated. The juniors dramatised Nursery Rhymes.

At present, the English group are working on a dramatisation from "The Hobbit" by Tolkein and the Afrikaans group are doing scenes from "Kanna Hy K6 Hystoe" by Adam Small

Debating Report Debating was one of the minor activities on this year's agenda

due to clashes with the many other extra-mural

activities

provided by the school.

The interhouse debates were won by Pearson House, represented by Yvonne Wellmann and Simon Hemmings, and the best speaker of the evening was Rory Diedricks of Chelmsford House. Well done Pearson and Rory!

Other debates this year, held in C.R. periocls, were between

the Science and Biology matrics on the topic "Man is

Evil

by Nature." The Biology team won, with Elaine Marshall the best speaker.

9HSt successfully challenged 9HSz on the issue that "lt is selfish and irresponsible for parents to have more than two children in today's world." Catherine Baas was best speaker I sincerely hope that 1979 will be more fruitful as far as debating is concerned. Come on everyone, make use of our teamteaching room! Pearson didn't have a very successful season as far as winning was concerned although our spirit and attitude to sports were greatly improved. We did, however, take the honours on the rugby field where standard of play as a team was outstanding. The Attack

The morning was calm and the red sun slowly eased over the serene land. A white morning mist lay over the undisturbed valley and the sheep were only little specks in the distance.

I

climbed the steep slope on top of the valley and looked

at the land on the other side. This was Dinas Vawr's land. A dark, ugly storm was brewing lar away in the west and the deep rolling thunder could faintly be heard. I ran down the valley quickly to check if the sheep were alright. The sun had risen higher in the sky now, but there was an eerie tint to the fading light. The sky was becoming blacker, from the west, and I looked up to the top of the hill. Suddenly I saw a faint glint of metal flickering at the crest of the hill. Two men were standing there, swords brandished. A thick fog rolled over the top of the hill and swallowed them.

There was no time to collect the sheep and hide them. A shout ripped out from my mouth and I bounded down to the bottom ol the valley, where the huts were unevenly spred, awaiting fate. Out of breath I rushed to the Chief's hut, tripped ovei the crude doorstep and fell to the floor. I looked up to see the Chief shaving a closely-cropped beard with a sharp knife.

I stood up, bowed hastedly and told him, as fast as I could, what had happened. His face broke out in an angry frown. He dropped the knife, wiped his wrinkled face and rushed out of the hut, shouting at the top of his feeble voice: "Prepare for attack!" All hell broke lose. Men stumbled out of huts with terrified looks on their faces. A mass of shocked people crawled about shouting for spears and shields. They knewthey had no chance against the enemy.

The fog closed over the huts and an eerie darkness followed. A Iew men lit up some torches and arranged the scared men into a group. They decided they would have to fight for it. They

I was sitting on the soft, white sand, gazing at the blue expanse, listening to the deep roar of the breaking waves and enjoying the company of solitude. Far, tar away a slight ripple grew on the mirror-smooth water, carrying green, tangling seaweed, driftwood and other strange objects, to hurl them with a monstrous roar at my feet, then, retreating in a hesitating manner as if the sea was saying sorry for its outburst.

It was on one of these waves that my unexpected visitor was carried to me while I was staring at the misty blue of the sea in the late afternoon glow. The bobbing creature attracted

The sun was slowly sinking in the west and the sky was red as

A beautiful noise. What a profound statement, but true

as

a sound can be pleasant enough to be beautiful, yet intruding enough to be a noise.

Nature is full of beautiful noises. The pink glow has captured the heavens, and on earth, there is a whisper amongst the faintly nodding trees. But as the wild winds blow out their cheeks, the trees sway, and the whisper now increases in volume and becomes an angry shout. To the drouhgt-stricken land, the noise is beautiful, as the storm is approaching.

The lightning flashes, and the thunder rocks and rolls. A few moments peace, with faint clapping winds, blowing among

We would like to thank Mr Milne tor coming with us on this hike and for driving the vehicle, as without him we could not have gone, as Mr Walters was unable to go.

We left Eshowe at 7.30 a.m. on the 22nd March. We arrived at the top of Mike's Pass at about 1 30 p m We walked from 2 00 - 6.00 p m. and set up camp iust above the pine forest at 7000 ft. We set off on Thursday morning at 7 00 for the top of Organ Pipes Pass. At 12.00 p.m. we had lunch atop Organs Pipes. After eventually finding the cave on Ndumeni Dome, lan decided that we should sleep in the valley below. The result night! lan trotted along like a mountain goat - aAtwetYolder all day.

Cave atop Gray's Pass. Although all six were dead tired,

they managed to get up at 4 30 the following morning to watch the sunrise which was only at 6.00. On Sunday we descended Gray's Pass and were very much envied by the 100 people we met going up to the top. I must congratulate the route planner. Our intentions were to sleep below Gatberg but all insisted on going as far as Ndedema Gorge. We trundled on through the afternoon heat - but not for long - we were soon accompanied by two hail storms. We managed a four hour walk in two and a half hours with the help of slippery paths We arrived at Sebaaieni Cave that evening Mr Milne about an hour later. That night we conversed with the- Bushmen.

The following day, Sunday, was a brisk walk back to Mike's Pass. Due to various people we were a day ahead of schedule

after covering about 70 kilometres.

We enjoyed a 13 course dinner at the Cathedral Peak Hotel.

That night we literally floated into dreamland at the

campsite at Mike's Pass. We arrived back in Eshowe on Monday 27th Mr Milne's last remark: "l really do look forward to the next hike with you lads."

To Mr Milne, the Walters and the Reiches, we can only say thank you for making our trip worthwhile. sor-irked

This year, hikes which have been completed in the various

holidays were the ones in the Drakensberg area (Organ Pipes to Greys and Sleeping Beauty Trail). All of these hikes were found to be most en.joyable.

Hikes planned for the future include one in the December holidays, in which those going hopetocompleteawalk alongthe entire length of the Drakensberg, as well as a trail along the Blyde River Canyon (Eastern Transvaal), and the Otter Trail (Cape) The most recent of the hikes completed this year was the Fanie Botha Trail in the October holidays The scenery on the actual trail was beautif ul, although it was the toughest hike many of the hikers had experienced, with each days hike averaging about seventeen kilometers through rugged terrain. The most disheartening thought was that for every downhill there would follow an uphill which was sure to be twice as steep as the downhill The sight of the hut where we were to spend the night

Fencing Report This year was really a record breaking year Ior the fencing team even though we weren't able to attend all the necessary competitions. We had three members of our fencing team

chosen to represent Natal "B" in the S.A. Championships which were held in Cape Town but unfortunately we could not attend due to lack of funds. The team is still expanding and we hope that more people will take an interest in it We are hoping to challenge the new Empangeni team in the near futu re.

Cross Country

Squash Report This year is the first time ever that squash has become

1978 was once again a successful year lor Eshowe Cross Country and increasing interest has been shown in this sport.

As a school, Eshowe did very well to win the Junior Boys and came second in the Girls and Senior Boys in Zululand. We also got ten runners into the Zululand Team. lndividually, there were two very big successes: John Kippen was selected for the Natal Junior "A" side, the Natal schoots team, came first in the Zululand Show Cross Country and was overall winner of the Zululand Junior Boys Cross Country.

As a result of this outstanding achievement he was awarded full colours, this being the first time colours have been hwarded for cross country at Eshowe.

Carol Lowry also ran very well especrally towards the end of the season and was selected for the Natal Schools Team. Carol is a runner with great potential who I hope will dominate the Zululand girls cross country next year.

the sport into the school. ln the beginning squash was limited to 40 players from two senior standards. The top ten boys and girls on Monday and the rest on a Wednesday. Having

a large number of players was unsuccessful, as in a whole afternoon it was sometimes only possible to have one game

each. When rugby and hockey season began, the number of players decreased as people found their time rather scarce. Many more people wanted to take their places but as more squash was required, it had to be restricted to only

the keenest.

Of the 25 squash players now left the top six boys and girls

play twice a week. They have been given a day more than the others as an opportunity to practice, as they represent the school as arteam. The squash players would like to thank Miss Mackay, Mr Johnstone and especially Mr Herbert (an outsider with no other Eshowe High School connections) for giving up their valuable time to assist us squash players.

Shooting 1978 saw the revival of the shooting tean in Eshowe. This was mainly due to the keen interest shown by parents and shottists from outside the school. Largely responsible was Mr Peter Ellis who gave up his Wednesday afternoons to come and impart his expert advice to our shottists and who also organised a very pleasant shooting weekend at his farm. We are also grateful to Mr Bols, Mr Robinson and Mr Roy Wilson for the coaching they have given The team is, however, still highly inexperienced as was shown at the Athlone shoot, but with practice we can develop the good potential available. I hope that interest in this sport will continue and more time can be found to practice so that we can become truly competitive.

First 15 Report 1978

Onder 13 Rugby

We can proudly look back on a season of good, hard rugby.

I think that, for a small school, like us, we gave a very good performance. We had a bit of bad luck in the form of injuries and the lack of finishing off a movement. The scores against us were not high.. The one of Saamwerk 28-18 was the highest and against Beachwood 17.3 was the biggest difference. Our win over New Forest was a fine one, 52-9. tne game which was outstanding was against Empangeni. They were very lucky to win.

Second Rugby Team Report - 1978

The Second Team this year had an extremely successful season and almost took honours in Eshowe High School

Rugby. The winning of seven games, drawing of one and only losing one were all due to the hard, good, clean and consistently played rugby.

Not only were these results outstanding, but the chaps achieved in breaking the record for points gained in a season. They are 29 points above the previous record, and the points record now is 299.

We owe a great deal ol our success to our enthusiastic coach,

Mr Kock, and on behall of all the seconds I would like to thank you tor the hard work. To the chaps, thanks for your cooperation. Keep up the good spirit and may 1979 prove to be even better than this year.

U/15 Rugby.

practices in general were well attended. l'd like to congratulate Mr Walters on leading us to a 18-12 victory over Empangeni,

our greatest rivals This game made the whole season absolutely complete.

Opposition varied from very weak to very strong. Eshowe never gave up trying, which was a stout effort With all points deducted against us, there were 129 for us. We set up a record, which will not be easily broken, when we played New Forest and beat them by 98 points to 0. I'd like to thank the third team members who gave me their support.

Ul4 Rugby The U14 A had a successful season winning five games and losing four. The team played good clean rugby but the forwards failed to pick up the loose ball. Our three-quarter movements were good but they failed to go full out when they received a good ball. On the whole our three-quarters received good clean balls from the rucks and mauls and made good use of them. Our team had a successful season with our fullback Melville having an exceptional season
