The purpose of the Guide is to expand upon what the Herald Citizens do each week: describe and celebrate these unique communities and the many services and organizations that make them so special. It’s a community meeting place, and venue for a variety of events, such as defensive-driving classes, concerts, free movie screenings, science programs, bus trips and more. S
eaford’s schools are constantly introducing new academic programs, enhancing facilities and adding new educators. The district comprises four buildings: Manor and Harbor elementary schools, Seaford Middle School, and of course, Seaford High. The arts are ingrained in the culture of each building. In some cases, artistic creativity enhances social emotional learning as hand-painted positive messages adorn walls of the middle and elementary schools. The high school marching band and colorguard participate in parades and competitions across the state and are offered a free oneweek band camp each summer. The High School football team is regularly ranked as one of the best in the county; its Varsity Boys and Girls Bowling Teams took it all the way to States this year! The high school is home to dozens of Advanced Placement Scholars annually. HP ProBook touchscreen laptops for middle and high school students have only enhanced classroom lessons in recent years. Seaford is also home to two private Catholic schools: Maria Regina and St. William The Abbot.

antagh Union Free School District students excel in every arena: in the classroom, on the athletic field, in the performing arts and through extracurricular activities. There are three elementary schools in the District — Wantagh Elementary, Mandalay and Forest Lake — as well as Wantagh Middle School and High School. Serving more than 3,000 students, the Wantagh schools continue to move
ahead with innovative programs that provide youngsters with the tools needed to achieve success in college and the ever-changing workforce. District leaders have made a concerted effort to expaned STEAM — science, technology, engineering, math and arts — programs and lab resources, such as 3-D printers and tablets; new courses including computer-coding and Audio Engineering and Music. Technology is constantly used in the classroom
and middle schoolers are given Chromebooks to use at school and home. The AP Capstone Program’s two-year sequence is up and running in the high school. Students also participate in a slew of activities and sports. Mandalay Elementary students ran more than 5,000 virtual miles — from Wantagh to Honolulu, with a stop in Hollywood along the way — under the leadership of teacher Robyn Pastuch.

Levittown Schools T he Levittown Union Free School District is one of the largest in Nassau County, serving more than 7,000 students from Levittown, North Wantagh and portions of northern Seaford. Wantagh-Seaford youngsters living within the district’s borders typically attend East Broadway or Lee Road elementary school before moving on to Jonas Salk Middle School and then becoming Generals at MacArthur High; a handful of children from both communities go to Gardiners Avenue Elementary as well. Special community services include both beforeand after-school childcare programs for elementary school-aged children. These low-cost, self-sustaining programs provide elementary school children with safe, supervised childcare every day school is in session. Similarly, the district sponsors or co-sponsors low cost summer recreation, music and academic programs for those parents wishing to keep their children close to home in a productive and safe summer learning or play environment. Community needs are further met through a Saturday dance and gymnastics program and year-round Adult Continuing Education. Several classes were also recently added at the high school level, including Advanced Placement Capstone — an intensive research course — ethics, American Sign Language and others. Levittown instructors value hands-on learning, keeping students engaged in science, math, literature, the arts and more.

t’s great to be a senior citizen in Wantagh and Seaford! There’s so much to do, and the best way to start is by joining the Wantagh Senior Center. Although the majority of its members are from Wantagh and Seaford, the Hempstead Town-operated center is open to all town residents, age 55 and older. Drop by the building, at 1150 Seamans Neck Road, between 9 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, to sign up for a free membership. Regular activities include billiards, arts and crafts, bingo, bridge, knitting and crocheting, board games and ceramics. For seniors looking to stay fit, the center offers exercise programs like tai chi, zumba and line dancing. It also offers support groups for those in need. Many seniors regularly gather at the center to socialize and enjoy lunch. The center offers regular trips to local
supermarkets so residents can go food shopping. And health programs, such as visits from doctors, medical screenings, flu immunizations and nutrition meetings are available as well. In summer, seniors visit Lido Beach as a part of the “All Roads Lead to Lido” program. This popular 10-week program offers free health services, crafts and games., and the center sponsors a health and wellness fair there each June. The Wantagh Senior Center holds a general meeting every month with its executive board, elected by the seniors. he Wantagh Fire Department is a volunteer organization made up of about 250 members and has been serving the community proudly for more than 115 years. The department provides protection to more than 18,000 homes and 700 businesses 24 hours a day. It is one of the largest fire districts in Nassau County, which not only covers Wantagh, but also parts of Seaford, Levittown, East Meadow, Bellmore and Jones Beach State Park and Tobay Beach. The robust unit also sponsors many community organizations and events.

he Seaford Fire Department was founded in 1900. For more than a century, the organization has provided fire and medical services to local households and businesses. The department is known throughout Seaford for its dedication to the community and for fulfilling its duty. The Wantagh-Levittown Volunteer Ambulance Corps. has assisted residents in need since 1956. in SEAFORD Great schools, awesome parks and restaurants, and the most wonderful part — a tight-knit community where everyone looks out for each other. What’s not to love about living in Seaford? “There are so many people in this town that take time from their own lives to make other people‘s lives better,” says Donna Spineli Jebaily, a resident since 1991. “I can’t say enough about the schools, I absolutely love them. The teachers, administration, support staff are all exceptional. My children are not only getting the best education possible, but they are among people who truly care about them.” Seaford is home to nearly a dozen parks, but one of the favorites is Seamans Neck Park, where a lot of local sports are played, you can rent row boats, use the sprinkler park and a playground that many neighborhood kids grew up using. Washington Avenue Park is another popular destination for the little ones, as well as Estella Park, locaated neaar the CVS on Merrick Road and nearby Wantagh Park. Cedar Creek Park, located just south of Merrick Road and east of Wantagh Avenue, is a go-to spot for locals looking to enjoy a spring or summer day. It offers athletic fields, playgrounds, picnic areas and community-based activities. It is also the site of a sewage treatment plant. Seaford offers a Police Activity League for several children’s sports, along with a Catholic Youth Organization and Seaford Little League baseball and softball. It is also the home of the Long Island Broncos youth football and cheer organization. “I love that our children have so many opportunities to join different types of sports, and for that I am grateful to everyone that volunteers to coach,” Jebaily says. New last year, the farmers market is open every Saturday morning, where Seaford and Wantagh residents look forward to buying fresh produce and meeting up with each other. friendly staff has sponsored several Seaford moms movie nights. The town has preschools at Our Redeemer, Seaford Community and St. William the Abbot. The community has its own train LIRR station, volunteer fire department and public library, whioch offers a multitude of great programs and events for adults and children. Outdoor options include hiking, bicycling and marveling at live animal exhibits in the nature center at the Tackapausha Preserve and Museum. Seaford’s main business district runs along Merrick Road. Businesses are also located further north, along Sunrise Highway, Washington Avenue and in the Seaford Harbor section. Seaford has many service clubs -— including a Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club, Wellness Council, the Seaford Historical Society, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Kiwanis Club — that are on a mission to give back to the community. And scouting, for both boys and girls, is very big in Seaford. Finally, an annual “Seaford Summer Recreation Program,” now in its 15th year, is run by some Seaford school teachers. Now in her 100th year, Dorothy Meinke moved to Seaford in 1947 with her husband, Richard, and raised 13 children as they watched the area grow to a prosperous village. “I’ve had a wonderful life,” the nonagenarian said of her nearly 63 years in Seaford; “really, just a wonderful life.”.

in Wantagh Ask residents what they love about living in Wantagh and most will undoubtedly say the close proximity to the water —the award-winning, nationally renowned Jones Beach. “I love that I am just 10 minutes from the ocean,” one longtime resident said. A close second is the entertainment at the Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater, which sits on the water and draws an eclectic group of celebrity performances every year. “We have a very engaged community with a wonderful support system of organizations that contribute to our quality of life,” said Ella Stevens, president of the Wantagh Homeowner’s Association, the 4th of July Parade Association and the Director of the Miss Wantagh pageant. “Our schools have been, and continue to be, Schools of Excellence, in which we take great pride. Our parks offer all the amenities you would find at vacation resorts. We also have local events and entertainment available in our downtown . . . and of course, our parades.” Others love the train museum, which showcases Wantagh’s long and rich history, the community parades, its beautiful neighborhoods, and, above all, the small town feel. “There’s so many friendly people,” one longtime resident says. “It’s a great place to raise a family!” Residents can enjoy a stunning bike ride along the bike path to Jones Beach, which offers 6.5 miles of white-sand beach on the Atlantic Ocean and is home to the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center, the boardwalk band shell, a miniature golf course, the West Bathhouse Pool, the scenic Landing restaurant and the recently added Adventure Park and Gatsby on teh OPcean restaurant, as well as various other recreational and dining facilities. Wantagh Park and the Twin Lakes Preserve, which offer a variety of amenities from scenic nature walks to recreational facilities for swimming and playing sports, as well as pools, bowling and miniature golf. Wantagh is served by the Nassau County Police Department, the Wantagh Fire Department and EMTs, and Wantagh-Levittown Volunteer Ambulance Corps. It has its own LIRR station and an active library. Major roads include Merrick Road, Sunrise Highway, Jerusalem Avenue, Wantagh Avenue and the Wantagh and Southern state parkways. Wantagh holds tradition close to heart with its annual ceremonies, such as the Easter egg hunt, holiday tree lighting, Homecoming, the John Theissen Foundation Freaky 5K run, the 9/11 ceremony at the American Legion and the crowning of Miss Wantagh. Juliet Watstein is the 2019 Miss Wantagh, and her court performs community service projects. The community has several business districts, with storefronts lining Wantagh Avenue, Merrick Road, Sunrise Highway, Park and Jerusalem avenues. Wantagh is also known to have popular bars, clubs and pubs all within walking distance of the train station. A few people who moved out of the area say they return to Wantagh to shop, banking and post office needs, and for its local businesses, like the Wantagh 5 & 10 (which has everything you will ever need!) One of their mottos — “there’s no place like Wantagh.”

Town of Hempstead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles, with a population of roughly 760,000. Hempstead is made up of 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, with more than 65 parks and marinas and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Democrat Laura Gillen — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from each of six districts. The supervisor serves a two-year term, and council members serve four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the zoning ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations and hearing applications for zoning changes or for special exceptions to zoning codes.
