elcome to the Wantagh Seaford Guide, a special supplement to the Seaford HeraldCitizen and the Wantagh Herald-Citizen. The purpose of the Guide is to expand upon what the Herald-Citizens do each week: describe and celebrate these unique communities and the many services and organizations that make them so special. Those who live here know that these are wonderful places to live. In this little book, you’ll find information about many organizations and institutions. For newcomers, the Guide provides a comprehensive look at all the communities have to offer. Longtime residents and business leaders will also find it a handy reference. We hope you enjoy the Guide. We’ve tried to make it the best handbook for Wantagh and Seaford ever published. We also hope you’ve been enjoying the expanded and improved coverage the papers have been bringing you since the old Citizen joined the Herald Community Newspaper family two years ago. This week’s paper and the Guide are being mailed to every home in the community to give you another chance to sample the outstanding coverage editor Andrew Hackmack and his team provide 52 weeks a year.

Living in Seaford
he area known today as Seaford was originally called “Great Water Land” or “Land on the Great Cove” by the Massapequa Native Americans who settled there. It was purchased by Captain John Seamen in 1643 and eventually named after his hometown in England. He purchased Seaford after he fled the Plymouth, Massachusetts settlement in search of religious and political freedom. The first school building was built in 1830. Today, the community south of Jerusalem Avenue is served by the Seaford School District, with children in northern Seaford attending schools in either Levittown, Plainedge or Island Trees. Private schools in Seaford include Maria Regina and Saint William the Abbot, both of which are Roman Catholic. The community has its own train station, volunteer fire department and public library. According to recent estimates, Seaford has a population of 15,294 people, a decrease of about 500 from the 2000 census. These residents live in more than 5,000 households. It is 95.4 percent white, 2.1 percent Asian and .5 percent black. 23 percent are under the age of 18, and 14 percent are 65 or older. Seaford is home to Cedar Creek Park, located south of Merrick Road and east of Wantagh Avenue. It offers athletic fields, playgrounds, picnic areas and community-based activities. It is also the site of a sewage treatment plant. Other recreational facilities include Seaman's Neck Park and Washington Avenue Park. The Tackapausha Preserve along the border with Massapequa includes nature trails and a museum featuring a collection of live animals. Seaford's main business district is along Merrick Road. There are also businesses located along Sunrise Highway, Washington Avenue and in the Seaford Harbor section. The Seaford High School football team is regularly ranked as

one of the best in the county, and the team won four straight conference championships from 2007-10. Seaford offers a Police Activity League for several sports for children along with a Catholic Youth Organization and Seaford Little League baseball and softball. It is also the home of the Long Island Broncos youth football and cheer organization. There are many active organizations, including a Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Wellness Council, Historical Society, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Kiwanis Club. Yearly traditions in Seaford include the Chamber of Commerce Easter egg hunt at Seaman's Neck, the Little League Parade, the Seaford Library's summer concert series, Relay for
Life at the high school track, the Historical Society's fall harvest fair, and the Wellness Council's Hot Chocolate Run, which begins and ends at Seaford High School. Local leaders include Chamber of Commerce President Mary Lucere, Kiwanis Club President Steven Katz, Lions Club President Charles Wroblewski, Wellness Council President Michael DiSilvio, Library Board President Peter Ruffner, American Legion Commander William Harms and Historical Society President Judy Bongiovi. Seaford is also home to Congressman Peter King, who represents New York's 2nd District, Jesse Kinch, the 2014 winner of ABC's "Rising Star," and Major League Baseball pitcher Sean Nolin, of the Oakland Athletics.

The Homecoming parade down Wantagh Avenue is one of several parades in the community each year along with Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Little League opening day.
Wantagh, or simply “Tagh” as it is known to many of its residents, is not only known as one of the best places to raise a family on Long Island, but also is the gateway to one of the world’s most renowned beaches. The Wantagh area originally belonged to the Merokee tribe of the Metoac Native Americans before the Dutch and English settled in the area in 1650. Then, the Dutch petitioned to obtain everything west of Oyster Bay, including Wantagh. The area was known by the Dutch as Jerusalem before being named Ridgewood in the 1880s. The town was later named Wantagh, since “Ridgewood” was already being used by another New York town. The community south of Jerusalem Avenue is served by the Wantagh Union Free School District. Wantagh Warriors sporting events are often big draws. North Wantagh is within the Levittown School District, where students become Generals at MacArthur High School. According to most recent estimates, Wantagh has a population of 18,871 living in nearly 6,000 households. It is 93 percent white, 0.30 percent African American, 2 percent Asian and 4.7 percent Hispanic or Latino, according to the 2010 census. North Wantagh has a population of 11,960, and 4,144 households. It is 88.6 percent white, 2.5 percent Asian, 7.5 percent Hispanic and 0.8 percent black. Wantagh is served by the Nassau County Auxiliary Police, Wantagh Fire Department, and WantaghLevittown Volunteer Ambulance Corporation. The town has a train station, library and several parks. Major roads include Merrick Road, Sunrise Highway, Jerusalem Avenue, Wantagh Avenue and the Wantagh State Parkway. The community is known as the Gateway to Jones Beach. Residents can enjoy a scenic bike ride beside the Wantagh Parkway to Jones Beach, where there
are bike racks, then continue along Ocean Parkway to TOBAY Beach. Jones Beach with 6.5 miles of white-sand beach on the Atlantic Ocean, is home to the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center, Nikon at Jones Beach Theater, the Boardwalk band shell, a miniature golf course, the West Bathhouse Pool, along with various other recreational facilities. Other local parks include Mill Pond, Forest City Community Park, Wantagh Park and the Twin Lakes Preserve, which offer a variety of amenities from scenic nature walks to recreational facilities for swimming and playing sports. Annual traditions in Wantagh include the Easter egg hunt, holiday tree lighting, Homecoming, the John Theissen Foundation Freaky 5K run and the crowning of Miss Wantagh. Keri Balnis is the 2015 Miss Wantagh, and her court is planning community service projects. The community has several business districts, along Wantagh Avenue, Merrick Road, Sunrise Highway, Park Avenue, and Jerusalem Avenue. Wantagh is known to have renowned and popular bars, clubs and pubs all within walking distance from the train station. Christopher Brown, president of the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce and owner of Mid-Island Medical Supply, encourages his fellow residents to support the business community. “By shopping locally it helps our local economy grow," he said. Other community leaders include Heidi Felix, president of the Wantagh Kiwanis Club; Gregg Markin, president of the Lions Club; Ella Stevens, coordinator of the Miss Wantagh pageant and president of the Wantagh-Seaford Homeowners Association; Ralph Spagnolo, executive director of the Wantagh Foundation for Educational Excellence; Karen Chowske, president of the Wantagh Preservation Society; Fred Parola and Judge Christopher Quinn.

Seaford Union Free School District No. 6 was formed in 1893. Before that, Seaford had a single school building and prior to that, students went to school in North Bellmore. The first school building in Seaford was built in 1830. It was replaced in 1849 with a two-room building that was condemned in 1893 when the district was created. A Board of Education was set up of five elected officials and another new schoolhouse was constructed. In 1921, the Jackson Avenue
School opened. It was later used as administrative offices and has since been sold. In 1938, the Seaford Avenue School was built, and was closed in the early 1980s. Today, the district operates four schools: Seaford Manor School (built in 1954), Seaford Harbor (1962), Seaford Middle School (1964) and Seaford High School (1956). The district serves nearly 2,300 students and has a budget of $63.6 million.

There are also health programs, such as visits from doctors, medical screenings, flu immunizations and nutrition meetings. The Wantagh Senior Center holds a general meeting every month with its executive board, elected by the seniors. In the summertime, seniors visit Lido Beach as a part of the “All Roads Lead to Lido" program. This popular 10-week program offers free health services, crafts and games. There is also a health and wellness fair there each June. Available programs include the Bereavement Support Group, which meets twice a month and provides a means of sharing grief, and the Caregivers’ Support Group, which meets once a month and SERVICES

towN of hempstead
The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of approximately 760,000 people. Within the Town there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Under the current system, the Town of Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Kate Murray — and a six-member Town Council. The six members of the council are elected from one of six councilmatic districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have a four-year term of office. The supervisor serves as the chief executive officer of town government. She presides over all town board meetings, directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments, employing just more than 2,100 people. As the chief financial officer of the township, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
