A letter from the

publisher Welcome to this year’s Wantagh & Seaford Community Guide, your resource for the people, places, traditions and organizations that make these neighboring communities such welcoming places to call home. We’re proud to bring you this annual supplement, which celebrates the energy and character of Wantagh and Seaford. Whether you’re a lifelong resident or new to the area, we hope these pages help you explore your community from a fresh perspective. Stuart This year’s cover features a lively montage-style collage Richner of images that represent the rhythms of daily life — including scenes from Seaford Library’s Summer Reading Kick-off party; the crowning of this year’s 70th Miss Wantagh, Lilah Diaz; the Seaford Recreation summer program’s America250 celebration; and the Wantagh Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. Together, these moments capture the spirit of neighbors who value connection, community and volunteerism. Inside, you’ll find a look at signature events, Jones Beach, local parks, schools, libraries and community organizations — along with the traditions and everyday experiences that give Wantagh and Seaford their distinct character. From a summer afternoon at Jones Beach’s newly renovated East Bathhouse to familiar community celebrations like the annual Seaford Hot Chocolate run, we hope this guide encourages you to discover something new while reconnecting with the places you already know and love. No guide to these communities would be complete without recognizing the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce and Seaford Chamber of Commerce. Their year-round efforts help strengthen the local business community while creating opportunities for residents to come together through events, initiatives and programs. Think of this guide as your local road map to Wantagh and Seaford. It’s a way to explore, connect and rediscover the hometown traditions that make these communities special. Here, history and community life continue to evolve side by side, shaped by the people who live, work, volunteer and raise their families here. This edition is once again published in partnership with the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce and Seaford Chamber of Commerce, and we are grateful for their continued collaboration and support. The guide also reflects the Long Island Herald’s commitment to telling the stories of the communities we serve. We hope it gives you a chance to learn more about your neighbors, find a new place to visit, discover a local organization to support or simply appreciate the community around you. Thank you for reading, and here’s to another year of celebrating Wantagh and Seaford.

tep back in time and discover the rich history of your community at Wantagh and Seaford's museums. Explore a restored 1885 railroad station, a luxurious parlor car, and a century-old post office in Wantagh, or see Seaford’s maritime heritage, historic schoolhouse artifacts, and the century-old Seaford Skiff.

Herald file photo The ‘"Jamaica" parlor car, built in 1912 and donated to the Wantagh Museum by the Long Island Rail Road, lets visitors step inside the elegance of early 20th-century travel.

A railroad’s past comes alive at the Wantagh Museum The Wantagh Museum, operated by the Wantagh Preservation Society, offers a unique look at the town’s past through three historic structures: the Victorian Railroad Station, the “Jamaica” parlor car, and a recreated 1904 post office. Together, they provide visitors with a hands-on experience of life in Wantagh more than a century ago. The centerpiece of the museum is the 1885 Wantagh Railroad Station. Originally located on Railroad Avenue, the sation was moved to its current site in 1966 to save it from demolition during railroad expansion. Restored to its 1904 appearance, the station features displays of turn-of-the-century photographs, memorabilia, and historical exhibits. A highlight is the ticket booth, restored to honor Emma Whitmore, the first woman to serve as a ticket agent at Wantagh Station. The “Jamaica” parlor car, built in 1912, was donated by the Long Island Rail Road in 1972. Once a luxurious car with a solarium, cooking facilities and ice-cooled air conditioning, it was carefully transported and set on hand-hewn ties at the museum.Visitors can imagine the elegance of early 20th-century rail travel while exploring its original features. Across from the station, the recreated 1904 Wantagh Post Office offers a glimpse into rural life in the early 1900s. The 10-by-12-foot structure shows how one person, often a local resident, handled mail for the community. Together, these three buildings preserve Wantagh’s history, from everyday life and transportation to postal services, giving visitors of all ages a tangible connection to the town’s past. 12

Herald file photo The Seaford Skiff, built in 1910 and restored to its original form, reflects the community's deep ties to fishing and duck hunting.

Learn Seaford’s sailing history on Waverly Avenue For those interested in exploring the roots of Seaford, the Seaford Museum on Waverly Avenue offers an engaging journey through local history. Housed in a building dating back to 1893, the structure first served as a two-room schoolhouse, later became a firehouse, and was ultimately transformed into a museum during the nation’s Bicentennial in 1976. Inside, visitors will find artifacts that tell the story of Seaford’s evolution from a bay and farming town to a modern community. A standout piece is the Seaford Skiff, a more than 100-year-old wooden boat built in 1910. Restored to its original form, the skiff reflects the town’s deep ties to fishing and duck hunting. Nearby, a collection of handcrafted decoy ducks demonstrates the artistry and tradition of local hunters. The museum also preserves the building’s schoolhouse history with original desks, a globe and a coal stove once used to heat classrooms. A recreated parlor room transports guests back in time with a German organ, a working Victrola and an early telephone. Other treasures include a stained-glass window from the original Methodist church, a red mahogany player piano complete with its original sale slip and a time capsule sealed in 1976 that will remain closed until 2076. Beyond the exhibits, the museum grounds feature a Heritage Walkway, where engraved stones allow residents and visitors to leave their mark. Together, these collections and displays make the Seaford Museum a hidden gem for anyone looking to connect with neighborhood history and heritage. 2026 - 2027 13 Wantagh and Seaford Community Guide

Seaford School District The Seaford School District, led by Superintendent Adele Pecora, has centered much of its educational approach around the Seaford Scholar, a profile introduced in 2023 to define the qualities students should develop throughout their education. The “Habits of Mind” profile identifies 10 traits — communicators, flexible, humorous, innovators, mindful, networkers, principled, reflective, resilient, and risk takers. The district incorporates these characteristics across grade levels, encouraging students to become thoughtful problem-solvers who can adapt, collaborate and approach challenges with confidence. The goal is to give students skills that extend beyond the classroom and prepare them for whatever comes next.

Five freshwater ponds, wetlands and wooded areas create a habitat for wildlife and a scenic setting for hiking, bird watching and fishing. A network of trails winds through the preserve, giving folks an opportunity to slow down and take in Long Island’s natural landscape. Cast a line at Mill Pond Mill Pond, formerly known as Jones Pond, offers a peaceful 15-acre setting for fishing and enjoying nature in Wantagh. A paved path follows the shoreline, making it easily walkable or to watch wildlife or find a spot to fish. The pond is home to species including bass, pickerel, bluegill, pumpkinseed, and carp, and made state history in 1993 when a 7-pound, 7-ounce black bullhead caught there set a New York state record. Waterfowl and other wildlife are also common sights around the pond, making it a popular stop for nature lovers. Everyone should follow precautions designed to prevent the spread of invasive species and protect the pond’s continued on page 34 habitat. 2026 - 2027 33 Wantagh and Seaford Community Guide
