living in Seaford Great schools, involved parents, and family-centered living along the coastline: these are just some of the things Seaford residents will tell you about their hometown. But whether it be in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, Hurricane Sandy or a house fire, community members have stressed that the most wonderful part about Seaford is that neighbors care for one another. Ken Haskell, a 48-year-old Seaford resident, said he would never forget the fundraising and emotional support the community offered his family after his brothers, Timmy and Tommy, were killed on 9/11. But Seaford residents aren’t simply kind in times of tragedy, he noted. “Seaford is a really special place,” he said. “Everyone knows each other and helps each other out. It’s got a small-town feel.” The area known today as Seaford was originally called “Great Water Land” or “Land on the Great Cove” by the Massapequa Native Americans who settled
there. It was purchased by Capt. John Seamen in 1643 and eventually named after his hometown in England. He purchased Seaford after he fled the Plymouth, Mass., settlement in search of religious and political freedom. The first school building was built in 1830. Today, the community south of Jerusalem Avenue is served by the Seaford School District, with some children in northern Seaford attending schools in Levittown. Private schools in Seaford include Maria Regina and Saint William the Abbot, both of which are Roman Catholic. According to recent estimates, Seaford has a population of 15,294 people, a decrease of about 500 from the 2000 census. These residents live in more than 5,000 households. It is 95.4 percent white, 2.1 percent Asian and .5 percent black. 23 percent are under the age of 18, and 14 percent are 65 or older. The community has its own Continued on next page

train station, volunteer fire department and public library. There’s also plenty to do outdoors in Seaford, which is home to nearly a dozen parks. Cedar Creek Park, located south of Merrick Road and east of Wantagh Avenue, is a go-to spot for locals looking to enjoy a spring or summer day. It offers athletic fields, playgrounds, picnic areas and community-based activities. It is also the site of a sewage treatment plant. Other recreational facilities include Seaman’s Neck Park and Washington Avenue Park. Seaford is also home to a unique facility: the Tackapausha Preserve and Museum. This nature center includes hiking trails and hosts live animal exhibits for youngsters. Seaford’s main business district is along Merrick Road. There are also businesses located along Sunrise Highway, Washington Avenue and in the Seaford Harbor section.
The Seaford High School football team is regularly ranked as one of the best in the county. In fact, the squad won four straight conference championships from 2007-10. Seaford offers a Police Activity League for several sports for children, along with a Catholic Youth Organization and Seaford Little League baseball and

softball. It is also the home of the Long Island Broncos youth football and cheer organization. There are many active organizations — including a Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Wellness Council, Historical Society, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Kiwanis Club — that are on a mission to give back to the community.

Wantagh, or simply “Tagh” as it is known to many residents, is not only known as the gateway to one of the world’s most renowned beaches, but is also considered by many to be one of the best places to raise a family on Long Island. Between the award-winning public schools, a convenient rail link to New York City, and of course, the proximity to the South Shore’s scenic bay and ocean-front coastlines, Wantagh has something special to offer residents of all ages. Community leaders have hypothesized time and time again that that’s why scores of natives decide to stay in or move back to Wantagh as adults. As documented in the Wantagh Museum — which includes the original community post office and train station — the neighborhood has a rich history. The Wantagh area originally belonged to the Merokee tribe of the Metoac Native Americans before the Dutch and English settled in the area in 1650. Then, the Dutch petitioned to ob-
tain everything west of Oyster Bay, including Wantagh. The area was known by the Dutch as Jerusalem — evidenced by local roadways and namesakes of institutions that still stand today — before being named Ridgewood in the 1880s. The town was later named Wantagh, since “Ridgewood” was already being used by another New York town. According to most recent estimates, Wantagh now has a population of 18,871 living in nearly 6,000 households. It is 93 percent white, 0.30 percent African-American, 2 percent Asian and 4.7 percent Hispanic or Latino, according to the 2010 census. North Wantagh has a population of 11,960, and 4,144 households. It is 88.6 percent white, 2.5 percent Asian, 7.5 percent Hispanic and 0.8 percent black. ing events are often big draws. North Wantagh is within the Levittown School District, where students become Generals at MacArthur High School. Wantagh is served by the Nassau County Police Department, Wantagh Fire Department, and Wantagh-Levittown Volunteer Ambulance Corps. The town has a train station, library and several parks. Major roads include Merrick Road, Sunrise Highway, Jerusalem Avenue, Wantagh Avenue and the Wantagh State Parkway. Residents can enjoy a stunning bike ride beside the parkway to Jones Beach, then continue along Ocean Parkway to Tobay Beach. Jones Beach, with 6.5 miles of white-sand beach on the Atlantic Ocean, is home to the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center, Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater, the boardwalk band shell, a miniature golf course, the West Bathhouse Pool as well as various recreational facilities. Other local parks include Mill Pond, Forest City Community Park, Wantagh Park and the Twin Lakes Preserve, which
offer a variety of amenities from scenic nature walks to recreational facilities for swimming and playing sports. Annual traditions in Wantagh include the Easter egg hunt, holiday tree lighting, Homecoming, the John Theissen Foundation Freaky 5K run and the crowning of Miss Wantagh. Samantha Walsh is the 2017 Miss Wantagh, and her court is performing community service projects. The community has several business districts, with store-
fronts lining Wantagh Avenue, Merrick Road, Sunrise Highway, Park and Jerusalem avenues. Wantagh is also known to have popular bars, clubs and pubs all within walking distance from the train station. Christopher Brown, the former president of the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce and owner of Mid-Island Medical Supply, encouraged his fellow residents to support the business community. “By shopping locally it helps our local economy grow,” he said.

he Wantagh Fire Department is a volunteer T organization made up of about 250 members
and has been serving the community proudly for more than 115 years. The department provides protection to more than 18,000 homes and 700 businesses 24 hours a day. It is one of the largest fire districts in Nassau County, which not only covers Wantagh, but also parts of Seaford, Levittown, East Meadow, Bellmore and Jones Beach State Park and Tobay Beach. The robust unit also sponsors many community organizations and events.

eaders of Seaford’s already acclaimed L schools said they are constantly introducing
new academic programs, enhancing facilities and adding new members to an already talented pool of educators in the district. While the first school building was built in the community in 1830, the Seaford Union Free School District No. 6 wasn’t formed until 1893. Today, the district comprises four buildings: Manor and Harbor elementary schools, Seaford Middle School, and of course, Seaford High. The arts are ingrained in the culture of each building, which feature colorful murals painted by Seaford native Cliff Miller. The high school marching band and colorguard participate in parades and competitions across the state. Seaford students consistently excel in the classroom, as the high school is home to dozens of Advanced Placement Scholars annually. New curricular offerings, textbooks, lab supplies and technology have only enhanced classroom lessons in recent years. Seaford is also home to two private Catholic schools: Maria Regina and St. William The Abbot.

antagh Union Free School District students excel in every arena: in the classroom, on the athletic field, in the performing arts and through extracurricular activities. The district consists of three elementary schools — Wantagh Elementary, Mandalay and Forest Lake — as well as Wantagh Middle School and Wantagh High School. All five have been designated National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education. Serving more than 3,000 children and teens, the Wantagh schools continue to move ahead with innovative programs that provide the youngsters with the tools needed to achieve success in college and the ever-changing workforce. District leaders have made a concerted effort to expaned STEAM — science, technology, engineering, math and arts — programs and lab resources, such as 3-D printers and tablets, on the elementary and secondary level. Technology is constantly used in the classroom; for instance, sixth graders are given Chromebooks to use at school and at home, and the high school offers courses in robotics and engineering. Students also participate in a slew of activities and sports. The Warriors are constantly bringing home titles to Wantagh; most recently, the boys’ baseball team captured the Nassau County Class A championship in May.

than 7,000 students from Levittown, North Wantagh and portions of northern Seaford. WantaghSeaford youngsters living within the district’s borders typically attend East Broadway or Lee Road elementary school before moving on to Jonas Salk Middle School and then becoming Generals at MacArthur High; a handful of children from both communities go to Gardiners Avenue Elementary as well. Levittown leaders said that they offer one of the most comprehensive, in-depth K-12 programs on Long Island. Students are provided unique opportunities and experiences in academic, career and technical education, special education, extra-curricular, community service and athletic programs. The hallmark of the district is the ability to meet the needs of all students by offering as many or more programs in-district than many other school systems. Special community services include both before and after-school childcare programs for elementary school-aged children. These low cost, self-sustaining programs provide elementary school children with safe, supervised childcare every day school is in session. t’s great to be a senior citizen in Wantagh and Seaford! IThere’s so much to do, and the best way to start is to join
the Wantagh Senior Center. Although the majority of its members are from Wantagh and Seaford, the Hempstead Town-operated center is open to all town residents, age 60 and older. Drop by the building, at 1150 Seamans Neck Road, between 9 a.m. and 4:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, to sign up for a free membership. Regular activities include billiards, arts and crafts, bingo, Bridge, knitting and crocheting, board games and ceramics. For seniors looking to stay fit, there are exercise programs like tai chi, zumba and line dancing. And there are plenty of support groups for those in need. Many seniors regularly gather at the center to socialize and enjoy lunch. The center offers regular trips to

local supermarkets so residents can go food shopping. There are also health programs, such as visits from doctors, medical screenings, flu immunizations and nutrition meetings. In summer, seniors visit Lido Beach as a part of the “All Roads Lead to Lido” program. This popular 10-week program offers free health services, crafts and games. There is also a health and wellness fair there each June. The Wantagh Senior Center holds a general meeting every month with its executive board, elected by the seniors. rescue program. Stop by both of the Beltagh Avenue centers to bring a four-legged friend into your home in the community. The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, at 3320 Beltagh Ave., boasts one of the highest adoption rates in the nation, according to officials. All adopted pets will be spayed or neutered, receive all required inoculations and will be micro-chipped — free of charge. The shelter also hosts adoption fairs and an annual rabies vaccination clinic in partnership with the Long Island Veterinary Medical Association. Through its many programs, Last Hope has worked to reduce the tremendous cat and dog overpopulation problem on Long Island, encourage responsible and economical pet ownership, and transform the public image of the typical pound animal for the past 35 years. The organization operates a dog and cat adoption center at 3300 Beltagh Ave. (formerly Bide-a-Wee). All dogs are rescued from local town shelters; cats are either death-due pound
rescues or are rescued after being abandoned on the streets. All animals are spayed and neutered and are temperamentevaluated before adoption. Last Hope hosts fundraisers around the community and sponsors a fostering program for cats, a “fix-a-feral” initiative and offers cage sponsorship opportunities. If you live in WantaghSeaford, there’s a good chance that you’ve been to a birthday party at Tackapausha as well. The preserve also offers nature walks, campfire circles, bird-watching programs and volunteer opportunities. If you still can’t get enough of the great outdoors, stop by one of the dozen Hempstead Town and Nassau County parks in Wantagh, Seaford and Levittown. Seaman’s Neck Park and Wantagh Park both have picturesque waterfront views.

Town of hempsTead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Anthony Santino — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. towN of Hempstead
