Todd Kaminsky Incumbent
Party: Democrat Age: 42 Professional experience: New York state senator Education: Bachelor’s degree, University of Michigan; law degree, New York Law School On the issues: Todd Kaminsky is chairman of the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee. He said his biggest accomplishment this term was passing the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, a law that he authored, and that he said is the nation’s strongest stateled effort to address the climate crisis, protect against extreme weather and create new green jobs. He also
helped secure benefits for 9/11 responders and wrote legislation providing funds for Long Island Rail Road infrastructure and capping property taxes. Kaminsky said he supports stronger measures to protect the barrier beach and is looking for ways to strengthen the current legislation. He was a co-sponsor of the bail reform bill, but believes changes in the legislation may be necessary to provide judges with more leverage over cases. He supported the Super Block proj-
ect in Long Beach and favors further economic development in the city. He has fought against state tax increases. Additionally, Kaminsky said he wants to ensure that next year’s state budget contains funds to support adult homes in Nassau County. Kaminsky has been an advocate for pension reform, working to strengthen antibribery laws and working to increase oversight of local government contracts. He has been an advocate for LIRR commuters and a supporter of Industrial Development Agencies, which foster economic development on Long Island. The IDA recently backed the Super Block in Long Beach.
Victoria Johnson Challenger
Party: Republican Age: 60 Professional experience: Took leave as chief of staff and office assistant to Assembly representatives on Long Island Education: Bachelor’s degree, State University of New York at Potsdam On the issues: Victoria Johnson is a strong supporter of police and is highly critical of the bail reform law. She said she believes judges should have more jurisdiction over sentencing, and over who should and should not be eligible for bail. Johnson acknowledged
that support for police and opposition to the bail reform law are the main thrusts of her campaign. She also said she believes more environmental support is needed for Long Beach’s North Park section and raised questions about the impact that the Super Block project might have on the local infrastructure, including sewer and water. Johnson was the daughter of a retired NYPD patrol officer and developed a deep sense of the importance of law enforcement,
she said. She decided early in life that the best place to raise her two children was Long Island. Over the years, she has maintained a steady career as chief of staff to Republican legislators on Long Island. She focused on constituent outreach and support in her state legislative district. Johnson said her opponent is focused on the needs of New York City progressive politicians, who do not have the interests of Long Islanders at heart. Johnson particularly opposed Kaminsky’s sponsorship of the bail reform bill, which she said allows “dangerous criminals to roam our streets without consequence.” If elected, Johnson said she would work to overturn the legislation.

ASSEMBlY DiSTRicT 20 Melissa “Missy” Miller Incumbent
Party: Republican Age: 56 Professional experience: State assemblywoman since 2017 Education: Adelphi University On the issues: Melissa Miller said there must be greater consistency in policy to ensure businesses survive and recover from the coronavirus pandmeic. She added that enhanced Covid-19 recovery assistance is needed for restaurants in New York state, as restaurants must limit the number of patrons allowed to dine in individual establishments to a percentage of
their normal capacity. Catering facilities have been capped at 50 patrons, regardless of the capacity of their facilities. She noted that 66 percent of restaurants do not expect to survive through the end of the year without a comprehensive relief package. During the coronavirus pandemic, Miller said that it is vital the state gives as much financial assistance to people, whether by providing unemployment insurance benefits or personal protective equipment and sanitizer,
to ensure public health for all. She said she believes that over the last several years, the state administration has wasted taxpayer dollars on failed economic development projects. The most infamous to her was the “Buffalo Billion,” in which money was funneled to promote solar panel manufacturing, but resulted in three people going to people prison in 2018. One of the ways Miller said the state could get PSEG-Long Island to perform better would be to hold the utility and its shareholders financially liable for the cost of covering customers’ losses that resulted from power outages during tropical storms and hurricanes. She added the State Assembly, Senate and the governor must hold LIPA Board members accountable.
Gregory Marks Challenger
Party: Democrat Age: 29 Professional experience: Public health lecturer Education: Oxford University, McGill University On the issues: Gregory Marks said that when dealing with the state budget, fiscal responsibility is and must always be a priority when managing it. With the state facing a deficit and the coronavirus still ravaging the country, Marks said he believes the federal government should send funding to the state, since New York is one of 10 net-donor states. A net donor state gives more to the federal government than it receives back in aid. Marks said that elected
officials should better educate business owners so they know of all available stimulus options. He is a firm believer that necessity breeds innovation, particularly when it comes to businesses that have suffered during the pandemic. He said he would look into a sales-tax holiday to stimulate spending on local businesses. Marks also said he wants a special restaurant week, takeout-style, to highlight local food establishments that have been hit hard by the pandemic. Final-

ly, he would set up a series of business seminars for the district, at which leaders of Long Island’s most successful and resilient businesses could share how they have navigated the pandemic. When it comes to massive power outages in the district after a major storm, Marks said a solution to the problem would investing in technology. With expansion of renewable energy sources and advances in battery technology, Marks said he believes local energy independence could be achieved, and that would help keep power on during major storms.

ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 21 Judy Griffin Incumbent
Party: Democratic Age: 57 Professional experience: Previously a senior adviser and director of community outreach to State Sen. Todd Kaminsky Education: Bachelor of Science in business economics, with minors in political science and communication, SUNY Oneonta On the issues: Judy Griffin, who is finishing her first term in office, said she would like to explore new revenue streams to fund schools, municipalities and health services. “While we wait for the federal government to act, it is imperative to assess our spending and revenues in
real time in order to make informed decisions,” she said. A mid-year fiscal report from State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli in mid-October, followed by a fiscal report from Gov. Andrew Cuomo, will provide essential information, she said. Griffin said she would continue to work on unemployment issues, advocate for tax and rent relief, and develop health insurance initiatives to assist those who lost their benefits because they are out of work during the pandemic.
Griffin said she keeps in touch with organizations like Vision Long Island and the local chambers of commerce to address local needs at the state level. Griffin also hosted a series of small businesses conferences via Zoom in collaboration with these organizations, and emphasizes the need to continue reopening businesses. Griffin co-sponsored a bill that was signed into law in June that establishes a state disaster emergency loan program to be administered by industrial development agencies for small businesses and small notfor-profit corporations. She is also reviewing the viability for the New York Forward Loan Program to reduce red tape so that grants for small businesses are expedited.
Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick Challenger
Parties: Republican, Conservative Age: 55 Professional experience: Attorney, certified public accountant and partner in the law firm of Canzoneri & Canzoneri, LLP Education: Bachelor of Science in accounting from St. John’s University; law degree from St. John’s School of Law; Master of Laws in Taxation from New York University School of Law On the issues: Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick’s platform includes pressing Governor Cuomo to responsibly reopen society, especially businesses;
exploring all alternatives when it comes to potential education aid cuts; and advocating for Economic Development Zones, which would set zoning as well as governmental assistance parameters for entire neighborhoods or blocks, as opposed to the outdated practice of piecemeal redevelopment of individual parcels, she said. Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick said she believes Long Island homeowners cannot afford the property tax increases that will likely result if state
legislators cannot fend off prospective education aid cuts. “Severe cost-cutting would erode our quality of education,” Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick said. “New York state’s budgets should not be balanced on the backs of students.” The candidate said she believes restructuring of state debt, allocation of federal CARES funding to school districts and re-ordering the state’s spending priorities must be analyzed and pursued. To address the uncertainty that developers face with respect to zoning and downtown revitalization, Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick is advocating for the creation of Economic Development Zones.

ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 22 Michaelle Solages Incumbent
Party: Democrat Age: 35 Professional experience: State Assembly member Education: Bachelor of Science, Hofstra University On the issues: Michaelle Solages is seeking her fifth term representing the 22nd Assembly District. During her eight years in office, Solages has focused on issues such as childcare, funding for programs like universal preschool on Long Island and legislation to achieve greater parity in health care within disadvantaged communities, where infant mortality rates are higher.
Past achievements include expanding Medicaid coverage to pay for access to donated breast milk for premature babies, or those whose mothers cannot produce their own, as well as legislation to provide lactation accommodations in public buildings. Her current efforts include establishing a universal pre-kindergarten program on Long Island through partnerships between local public school districts and non-profits. Additionally, Solages is seeking to pro-
vide greater access to healthy foods within disadvantaged communities as part of a systemic effort to address health disparities. Most recently, Solages submitted legislation to expand state paid family leave to include parents who are adapting to their children’s distance-learning curriculum during the coronavirus pandemic. Generally, Solages has centered her efforts around providing public services for working families and mothers.
Nicholas Zacchea Challenger
Party: Republican Age: Undisclosed Professional experience: Auditor for the U.S. Government Accountability Office and U.S. Department of Energy; auditing consultant for 24 government, non-governmental and corporate organizations, as well as a variety of other short-term consulting and advisory projects Education: Doctorate in economic science On the issues: Nicholas Zacchea is seeking to leverage his decades-long career as a government auditor and economic consultant. As an auditor in the U.S. Govern-
ment Accountability Office, his responsibilities included providing data-backed analyses to U.S. Congress members to inform their policy decisions. After, he worked as a consultant for a number of government and non-governmental organizations, providing input on economic issues ranging from corruption to public finance. With a doctorate in economic science, Zacchea said he promotes a data-driven approach to government. He looks to bring greater efficiency to state operations

through a close look at its finances to end fraud, waste and abuse through robust systems of accountability, transparency and oversight. While he is not opposed to public aid programs, he does believe assistance should not come in the form of direct financial support, which he says could dampen productivity. Instead, he favors mechanisms such as tax credits and low-interest, long-term loans to help provide or pay for services. On proposals for higherdensity housing, he believes they are the consequence of poor fiscal management, as local governments seek to expand their tax bases. He does, however, believe they can be appropriate to address housing disparities in high-tax areas such as Long Island.
