Dave McDonough Incumbent

Party: Republican, Conservative, Independent Age: 83 Professional experience: New York state assemblyman Education: Bachelor of Arts, Columbia University On the issues: David McDonough said he supports the Small Business Emergency Recovery Act, which would immediately direct the state’s $890 million settlement reserve fund to small businesses, move tax deadlines for remittance and repurpose available tax credits to help existing businesses. Since March, he said he has advocated for small businesses

and was among the first to call for regional reopenings, along with being a part of “Jump Start New York” to aid residents and businesses and provide economic recovery. “We need to stop the high out-migration that is hurting our economy and diminishing the tax base,” McDonough said. “We also need to provide incentives to encourage students to stay in New York after graduation. I co-sponsored legislation called the New York State Diplomas to Home Owner-

ship Program, which encourages home ownership for young professionals by providing financial assistance with student loan debt equal to 10 percent of the purchase price of a property, up to $15,000.” To assist older adults, he said, he has co-sponsored legislation to establish a phased-in real property tax exemption for persons 80 or older. He also co-sponsored legislation to establish a 25 percent increase on the real property tax-relief credit for 2020 and generate a permanent credit for Basic and Enhanced STAR recipients.

Kevin Gorman Challenger

Party: Democratic Age: 69 Professional experience: Purchasing supervisor Education: Bachelor of Science, Fordham University On the issues: To help the economy recover and provide funding for the people who need it most, Kevin Gorman said he would reform the tax rates to give a “boost to struggling small businesses and individuals affected by the coronavirus. If the very well-off contribute their fair share of tax revenue, we can give relief to middle-class working families, small businesses and individuals who so desperately need the state government to step up in

this time of need.” Home ownership is a crucial component of building and maintaining the middle class, he said, so affordable home loans and increased inventory of affordable housing for both renters and buyers is needed. Property tax relief for seniors and middle-class homeowners is also important, he said. “When I am elected to the New York state assembly, I will work with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to help Long Islanders obtain affordable

living spaces and ease the heavy burden of housing costs in our region,” he said. “My first duty as an assemblyman is to represent and advocate for my constituents,” he continued. “The things that matter to them, such as the toxic Bethpage plume, are my first priority. It is vital that we clean it up as quickly as possible for our environment and hold those who caused the contamination accountable. Additionally, we need tax reform to help those affected by the pandemic and to properly fund our schools.”

Includes North Merrick, Merrick, North Bellmore, Bellmore, North Wantagh, Wantagh and parts of Roosevelt and Seaford.

ELECTIon 2020

ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 18 Taylor Darling Incumbent

Party: Democrat Age: 36 Professional experience: Assemblywoman, industrial organizational psychologist Education: Spelman College, Hofstra University On the issues: During her time in office, Taylor Darling has worked to tackle long-term, systemic issues affecting the 18th Assembly District. Darling has advocated for additional funding for local schools, as well as secured monies owed because Foundation Aid continues to shrink. She also opposes any cuts to schools, and wants additional research and funding to go into schools’ post-pandemic

needs. Darling also worked with other state officials to secure the former National Guard Armory, on Babylon Turnpike, for the Village of Freeport in 2019. She said she wanted the armory to be used in a way that best serves local residents. She has backed the idea of converting it into a community center that would host activities for residents of all ages. With the coronavirus pandemic devastating local economies, Darling wants the state to focus on the

communities that were impacted the most, which includes her district. She said she would work with the state to evaluate each need and allocate funds where they are needed most. She also wants to address the issues that were already in place that caused 18th Assembly District communities to have significantly higher Covid-19 cases than neighboring areas. And Darling said she hopes to continue breaking down barriers between local government and residents to help people find and understand all the resources available to them, especially older adults living on fixed incomes.

2020

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3 Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Includes Hempstead and Uniondale, and parts of South Hempstead, Roosevelt, Freeport and south Merrick. Taylor Darling’s opponent, Cherice Vanderhall, could not be reached for comment.
