Melissa “Missy” Miller Incumbent

Party: Republican Age: 56 Professional experience: State assemblywoman since 2017 Education: Adelphi University On the issues: Melissa Miller said there must be greater consistency in policy to ensure businesses survive and recover from the coronavirus pandmeic. She added that enhanced Covid-19 recovery assistance is needed for restaurants in New York state, as restaurants must limit the number of patrons allowed to dine in individual establishments to a percentage of

their normal capacity. Catering facilities have been capped at 50 patrons, regardless of the capacity of their facilities. She noted that 66 percent of restaurants do not expect to survive through the end of the year without a comprehensive relief package. During the coronavirus pandemic, Miller said that it is vital the state gives as much financial assistance to people, whether by providing unemployment insurance benefits or personal protective equipment and sanitizer,

to ensure public health for all. She said she believes that over the last several years, the state administration has wasted taxpayer dollars on failed economic development projects. The most infamous to her was the “Buffalo Billion,” in which money was funneled to promote solar panel manufacturing, but resulted in three people going to people prison in 2018. One of the ways Miller said the state could get PSEG-Long Island to perform better would be to hold the utility and its shareholders financially liable for the cost of covering customers’ losses that resulted from power outages during tropical storms and hurricanes. She added the State Assembly, Senate and the governor must hold LIPA Board members accountable.

Gregory Marks Challenger

Party: Democrat Age: 29 Professional experience: Public health lecturer Education: Oxford University, McGill University On the issues: Gregory Marks said that when dealing with the state budget, fiscal responsibility is and must always be a priority when managing it. With the state facing a deficit and the coronavirus still ravaging the country, Marks said he believes the federal government should send funding to the state, since New York is one of 10 net-donor states. A net donor state gives more to the federal government than it receives back in aid. Marks said that elected

officials should better educate business owners so they know of all available stimulus options. He is a firm believer that necessity breeds innovation, particularly when it comes to businesses that have suffered during the pandemic. He said he would look into a sales-tax holiday to stimulate spending on local businesses. Marks also said he wants a special restaurant week, takeout-style, to highlight local food establishments that have been hit hard by the pandemic. Final-

ly, he would set up a series of business seminars for the district, at which leaders of Long Island’s most successful and resilient businesses could share how they have navigated the pandemic. When it comes to massive power outages in the district after a major storm, Marks said a solution to the problem would investing in technology. With expansion of renewable energy sources and advances in battery technology, Marks said he believes local energy independence could be achieved, and that would help keep power on during major storms.

Includes the Five Towns, Oceanside, East Atlantic Beach, Long Beach, Point Lookout and Island Park.
