Legal career: Between 1982 and 2007, Ignatius Muscarella served as a law clerk for three justices of the New York Supreme Court. In 2008, Muscarella was honored for Professionalism & Community Services by the Court Officers’ Benevolent Association, and in 2004 he received the Merit Performance Award for Community Service and Humanitarian Pursuits by the New York State Court System.

Legal career: Darlene Harris is currently a Nassau County District Court judge, and was elected to the post in 2014. From 1991 to 1994, she served as senior court attorney for the District Court Law Department; from 1995 to 1996, as the Town of Hempstead’s deputy attorney; and from 1996 to 1999 as a Nassau County legislator. In 1997, she opened a private law practice, which she maintained through 2010. From 2010 to 2014, she was chair of the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission.

Legal career: Lisa Cairo began her career in 2003 as an associate at Chris J. Coschignano P.C., handling civil litigation with a focus on matrimonial cases, municipal applications and real estate transactions. In 2006, she became an associate at Jaspan Schlesinger LLP in the firm’s matrimonial practice group. In 2011, she became a partner in the firm’s municipal law, litigation and real estate practice groups. She is also a member of the firm’s management committee.

Legal career: From to 1993 to 1994, Robert Pipia served as a law assistant for the Town of Hempstead attorney’s office. In February 1994, Hempstead Presiding Supervisor Gregory Peterson appointed him as the Hempstead Town Board counsel. He became deputy town attorney in 2000. He was also executive assistant to Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray. In 2014, Pipia was elected Nassau County District Court judge, a position he still holds. He has also served as a member of the State Rehabilitation Council, which was the oversight agency for Vocational and Education Services for Individuals with Disabilities, a division of the New York State Department of Education. And he is a member of the Hofstra Law Alumni Association board of directors.

Legal career: Tricia Ferrel began her legal career in 1998 as an assistant Nassau County district attorney. She served in that role until 2005. She was the Village of Hempstead attorney from 2005 to 2006. She became the Nassau County director of compliance from 2006 to 2008. She was appointed by Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi as a Nassau County District Court judge in 2008, and was re-elected to the post in 2009 and 2014.

Legal career: Caryn Fink started her legal career from 1993 to 2000 as an assistant district attorney and senior trial attorney in the Kings County District Attorney’s Office. From 2006 to 2013, she was an assistant district attorney in the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, Rackets Bureau/Labor Unit. And from 2013 to now, she has been the principal law clerk for the Hon. Helene Gugerty, a New York State Supreme justice.

Party: Democrat Age: 36 Professional experience: Assemblywoman, industrial organizational psychologist Education: Spelman College, Hofstra University On the issues: During her time in office, Taylor Darling has worked to tackle long-term, systemic issues affecting the 18th Assembly District. Darling has advocated for additional funding for local schools, as well as secured monies owed because Foundation Aid continues to shrink. She also opposes any cuts to schools, and wants additional research and funding to go into schools’ post-pandemic

needs. Darling also worked with other state officials to secure the former National Guard Armory, on Babylon Turnpike, for the Village of Freeport in 2019. She said she wanted the armory to be used in a way that best serves local residents. She has backed the idea of converting it into a community center that would host activities for residents of all ages. With the coronavirus pandemic devastating local economies, Darling wants the state to focus on the

communities that were impacted the most, which includes her district. She said she would work with the state to evaluate each need and allocate funds where they are needed most. She also wants to address the issues that were already in place that caused 18th Assembly District communities to have significantly higher Covid-19 cases than neighboring areas. And Darling said she hopes to continue breaking down barriers between local government and residents to help people find and understand all the resources available to them, especially older adults living on fixed incomes.

ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 21 Judy Griffin Incumbent

Party: Democratic Age: 57 Professional experience: Previously a senior adviser and director of community outreach to State Sen. Todd Kaminsky Education: Bachelor of Science in business economics, with minors in political science and communication, SUNY Oneonta On the issues: Judy Griffin, who is finishing her first term in office, said she would like to explore new revenue streams to fund schools, municipalities and health services. “While we wait for the federal government to act, it is imperative to assess our spending and revenues in

real time in order to make informed decisions,” she said. A mid-year fiscal report from State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli in mid-October, followed by a fiscal report from Gov. Andrew Cuomo, will provide essential information, she said. Griffin said she would continue to work on unemployment issues, advocate for tax and rent relief, and develop health insurance initiatives to assist those who lost their benefits because they are out of work during the pandemic.

Griffin said she keeps in touch with organizations like Vision Long Island and the local chambers of commerce to address local needs at the state level. Griffin also hosted a series of small businesses conferences via Zoom in collaboration with these organizations, and emphasizes the need to continue reopening businesses. Griffin co-sponsored a bill that was signed into law in June that establishes a state disaster emergency loan program to be administered by industrial development agencies for small businesses and small notfor-profit corporations. She is also reviewing the viability for the New York Forward Loan Program to reduce red tape so that grants for small businesses are expedited.

Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick Challenger

Parties: Republican, Conservative Age: 55 Professional experience: Attorney, certified public accountant and partner in the law firm of Canzoneri & Canzoneri, LLP Education: Bachelor of Science in accounting from St. John’s University; law degree from St. John’s School of Law; Master of Laws in Taxation from New York University School of Law On the issues: Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick’s platform includes pressing Governor Cuomo to responsibly reopen society, especially businesses;

exploring all alternatives when it comes to potential education aid cuts; and advocating for Economic Development Zones, which would set zoning as well as governmental assistance parameters for entire neighborhoods or blocks, as opposed to the outdated practice of piecemeal redevelopment of individual parcels, she said. Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick said she believes Long Island homeowners cannot afford the property tax increases that will likely result if state

legislators cannot fend off prospective education aid cuts. “Severe cost-cutting would erode our quality of education,” Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick said. “New York state’s budgets should not be balanced on the backs of students.” The candidate said she believes restructuring of state debt, allocation of federal CARES funding to school districts and re-ordering the state’s spending priorities must be analyzed and pursued. To address the uncertainty that developers face with respect to zoning and downtown revitalization, Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick is advocating for the creation of Economic Development Zones.
