Neighbors helping neighbors. That’s what Valley Stream is all about. And what it continues to be. We looked out for each other all through the Covid-19 crisis. Everyone stepped up during this challenging time: grocery stores and other necessary retailers, community organizations, civic leaders, local officials, etc. And we can never thank enough our health care workers for their selfless dedication. Now we understand just how resilient we, as a community, are.

A letter from the

Now that we have emerged from the pandemic with vaccines and medical advances in our arsenal, we are ready to charge ahead with optimism and renewed vigor.

In this edition of our annual Living In Valley Stream, we look at all that is wonderful about this lively village. A special publication of your hometown newspaper, it’s published in cooperation with the Valley Stream Chamber of Commerce. We are honored to mark another year as the chamber's official Wepublication.hope you find this issue useful and informative, and that you enjoy reading the Valley Stream Herald 52 weeks a year. the crisis, the Valley Stream Herald remained steadfast in informing everyone of the impact of the pandemic, and also all of the great things individuals, stores, police, firefighters, schools and community leaders were doing to keep moving forward. Herald reporters were at meetings, and talking to you and your neighbors, to paint a portrait of a village that may have struggled at times, but one that also is winning.

The pandemic tested all of us beyond our limits. Valley Stream, however, remains strong. This village is full of fighters. And as the pandemic shifts to endemic stage and we fully resume our lives, we are all reinvigorated and re Throughoutenergized.

We drive them. We walk them. We live on them. We work, we play — every aspect of our lives can be tied straight back to a street. They are the heart of our community. You can't get anywhere unless you're on a street. In this year's Living in Valley Stream, we explore the very streets that make Valley Stream what it is. From the businesses, to the parks, to even the town square. There's a story behind every street, and we hope you'll enjoy these stories, learning more about the community all of us love.

Rich in more than 100 acres of pristine parkland, abundant in recreational activities for residents of all ages — and a mere 30 minutes to the heart of Midtown Manhattan — Valley Stream is a suburban oasis close to metro New York and major air, rail, and road transportation that connects us to the world! From baseball and soccer fields, to basketball, tennis — and now, pickleball courts, a miniature golf course, and a magnificent resort-style pool complex — Valley Stream offers a huge variety of recreational outlets.

Our village staff takes great pride in providing great services to our residents. The summer brings outdoor concerts and movies, the Barrett Park Camp program, the Farmers Market, and wildly popular car shows. Throughout the year, there are always plenty of seasonal activities for all to enjoy.

As a lifelong Valley Streamer, I am proud to call this village my home. The entire village board joins me in urging you to take advantage of all that is offered here!

The latest U.S. Census has put Valley Stream’s population above 40,000, which is an increase of nearly 2,000 people in the last decade. Clearly, people want to live here in our bustling, clean and friendly village!

Edwin Fare, Mayor of Valley Stream

Tim Baker/Herald file

Abounding in civic spirit, Valley Stream is fortunate to have a uniquely dedicated group of citizens who donate their time and talents to the betterment of our community. Our village’s volunteers include the members of the historical society, the brave men and women of the fire department, first-rate auxiliary police and civilian patrols, and organizations catering to residents of all ages — from our youth council to our Silver Threads. Our website at VSVNY.org, as well as our social media platforms, provides a great way to keep informed of everything that is going on around Valley Stream. The Mayor’s Helpline — (855) 99MAYOR — is another way for the public to let us know of any concerns.

Pool-goers at the Arthur J. Hendrickson Park pool complex enjoy the last bit of summer with flowers in bloom.

The chamber is the co-sponsor of the Fourth of July fireworks with the village. It is the best show around. The chamber is also a major sponsor of the Community Fest since it originated. The summer’s Rockaway Avenue Car Show is sponsored by VSCC. We have also sponsored the Summer Concert Series.Members of our group have recently been participating in Clean-Up Days — picking up garbage off major roadways. We also arrange ribbon cuttings to welcome new businesses, and we also march in the Memorial Day Parade.

That all changed in early August of last year when it was ceremonially renamed Vincent DeMarino Way in honor of the eponymous late North Valley Stream resident and New York Police Department deputy chief for his valiant efforts during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.DeMarino was numbered among the hundreds of first responders making their way to the World Trade Center in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy.

He died in December 2019 of a brain tumor, which doctors say he developed because of his exposure to the contaminated air in lower Manhattan in the days after the search and rescue operations. He was 61.

Even despite his ongoing health problems during his life, DeMarino pressed on with his career in public safety, serving as the New York City Transit security chief dealing with emergency response and counterterrorism measures, as well as guarding the city’s transit facilities.Forhis valor and relentless dedication to his community, the Town of Hempstead hosted the ceremonial unveiling of the new street sign.

Sept. 11, 2001, heroic first responders like Vincent DeMarino continue to tragically lose their lives as a result of cancers and other illnesses from working at the contaminated ground zero site,” Town of Hempstead supervisor Don Clavin said. “We have to remember that it’s not just one day for some people. It’s every day. We should reflect on that.”

DeMarino is survived by his wife, Charlene DeMarino, and four children: Michael, Nicole, Morgan and Vincent, who have all followed in their father’s line of work as police officers and proudly carry the DeMarino name today.“Iremember I asked him if he had any regrets about being there at ground zero, seeing what it did to him,” Vincent said. “He told me he didn’t at all. With such a big slice of community life, tons of new accommodations, spaces, and programs are being added year-round, so no one is left out of the excitement.

But time after time, the post has not only been an advocate for its local veterans, but dedicatedly opens its doors to the community, offering its event space to worthwhile causes and organizations — both close to home and in the larger Town of Hempstead area.

The post also hosts the New York Naval Cadet Corps, which was formed in January 2018 as a non-federally funded group made up of children and teens in third through 12th grade who learn customs and courtesies of the U.S. Navy while serving various communities.
