Every season Valley Stream offers something special for our residents. From baseball and soccer fields to basketball courts, a miniature golf course and a fantastic state-of-the-art pool complex, weekly concert series and much more provide plenty to do in the summer months. A wealth of enriching activities for children and adults at Valley Stream’s Henry Waldinger Memorial Library and a variety of children’s and adult activities, including arts and crafts, yoga and zumba, to name just a few, are available at the Community Center on Hendrickson Lake all year round. Our village staff works hard to provide great services so that there is truly something for everyone in Valley Stream and even our four-legged friends can enjoy our beautiful dog park

Another year has passed, and we welcome this latest edition of the Valley Stream Guide. I am grateful to the Herald Community Newspapers for providing this comprehensive and informative publication. A branch line of the South Side Railroad was opened in Far Rockaway. Valley Stream was the juncture point and appeared for the first time on the timetable.

Valley Stream received its name from Robert Pagan.

He so named it, he said, “on account of the many hills to the north of her, and of the abundance of small streams in the vicinity.”

• 1870

E.B. Litchfield, a land owner, and William Olmsted, an architect, laid out the first streets and built the first homes off Rockaway Avenue. The Valley Stream train depot was also built on the east side of Rockaway Avenue.

• 1858

The City of Brooklyn purchased Valley Stream ponds for its water system.

History with a side of ice cream

A

bout 40 Valley Streamers gathered at the village’s new courthouse on June, 2019 to eat strawberries and ice cream and learn about the building’s storied history as part of the Valley Stream Historical Society’s annual Strawberry and Ice Cream Social.

“I was very happy with how it turned out,” said Valerie Esposito, a Historical Society trustee.

The guests listened as Kate Sherwood, an architect from Gensler architecture firm, spoke about the renovations the firm made to the building. She then took them on a tour of the building, and before they left, everyone enjoyed ice cream from Walt Itgens Ice Cream Parlour, fresh strawberries and pound cake.

lounded in 1925, the Valley Stream Central High School District offers a variety of programs to prepare students for college. There are culinary, science research, performing arts and technical programs, along with SAT preparation classes and college workshops. There are also writing enrichment classes at the middle school and 23 Advanced Placement courses at the high schools.

There are about 4,600 students in four schools, with a professional staff of about 450 in the Valley Stream Central High School District, which is one of only three New York state districts that covers only grades seven to 12.

Central High School houses grades 10 to 12 and opened on Fletcher Avenue in 1929. Before that, students attended school

on Wheeler Avenue. That building was torn down after the new high school was built.

Memorial Junior High School is grades seven to nine. It opened in 1952 when Central High School became too crowded.

A year later, North and South high schools were approved on the same referendum and built in identical styles. They opened in 1955 and are the two junior and senior high schools, serving grades seven to 12.

Students attend these schools after graduating from elementary districts 13, 24 or 30. The district’s nine-member Board of Education consists of three representatives from each elementary school district board and holds meetings that are open to the public.

Elementary District 13 among the very best

V

alley Stream District 13 is the oldest and largest of Valley Stream’s elementary school districts. Its first wooden schoolhouse was built in 1858 after the New York State Legislature passed “An Act for the Establishment of Common Schools” in 1812.

Before this building, District 13 students walked to nearby districts to attend school. The schoolhouse was replaced in 1872 and 1891; in 1905, the schoolhouse was built as a clapboard school.

The present Wheeler Avenue School was built in 1925.

The James A. Dever School, then named Corona Avenue, was built in 1950, followed

by Howell and Willow Road Schools in 1953.

There are about 2,200 students and 200 staff members in the four District 13 schools that serve grades kindergarten to 6. Wheeler Avenue, James A. Dever, Howell Road and Willow Road run by the motto, “Where children come first.”

The district encompasses part of the Village of Valley Stream, North Valley Stream, Malverne, Franklin Square and Elmont.

istrict 24 was formed in 1894 from sections of Hewlett-Woodmere District 14 and Valley Stream District 13. through sixth grade. The district prides itself on its students’ high academic achievements and scores on the New York state tests.

The district’s 20,000 residents have long supported the schools by approving the annual budget and getting involved.

Brooklyn Avenue hosts its annual read-aloud in June, and each class has a visitor read to them. William L. Buck students promote healthy hearts by participating in Jump Rope for Heart this March. istrict 30 was formed in 1923 from parts of Valley Stream School Districts 13 and 24, and Elmont District 16.

Clear Stream Avenue opened in 1924 and Shaw Avenue opened in 1951; Forest Road School opened in 1953, followed by the Washington Avenue School, which later closed.

The three schools in District 30 serve roughly 1,500 students in grades kindergarten to six. In 2012, Shaw Avenue was nominated by the New York State Education Department as a National Blue Ribbon School because of its achievement on the 2011 New York State state assessments.

The education department has also designated each school in District 30 as a “Reward School.”

The three schools offer a variety of activities, such as performing arts programs, gifted and talented education, before and after school clubs, integrated technology projects and home-school connections.

Programs implemented in recent years included Latin for grades four to six, an elementary science program for third grade, lab write-up instruction for sixth grade and an integrated ELA/ social studies curriculum for all students.

The Senior Life in...

Valley Stream F ounded in 1967, Green Acres Senior Center is one of 16 senior centers run by the Town of Hempstead. Although the majority of its members are from Valley Stream, the center is open to all town residents 60 and older, and it is free to join.

Regular activities include bingo, beach trips, billiards, sewing, a glee club, cards, luncheons, arts and crafts and supermarket trips. There is a yearly holiday boutique.

Three days a week, Green Acres members can participate in a lunch program. The center has its own nutritionist to ensure that members’ health needs are met.

Green Acres holds a general meeting every month with its executive board of seven members elected by the seniors.

Bingo is hosted a couple of times a week and lasts from 1 to 2:30 p.m. On Thursdays in summer, its seniors visit Lido Beach as part of the “All Roads Lead to Lido” program. This popular 10-week program offers free health services, crafts

and games.

All town senior centers include additional activities such as physical fitness classes, discussions about humanities and current events, piano lessons, painting, macramé, sculpture, calligraphy, creative writing, poetry, shuffleboard, bowling, intergenerational programs, films and speakers.

Available programs include the Bereavement Support Group, which meets twice a month and provides a means of sharing grief, and the Caregivers’ Support Group, which meets once a month and supports those who are tending to a friend or family member. Hendrickson Park. From donating knitting and crocheting projects to Nassau University Medical Center and South Nassau Communities Hospital, to shopping trips, luncheons and birthday bagels, there is rarely a dull moment at Silver Threads.

The club offers different activities every day of the week, including bocce, chair yoga, rummikub, beauty days and more. The best attendance, however, occurs on card-playing and bingo days. Most of the seniors said that their favorite part of the club is the actionpacked card games. The men sit in a different room than the women because they get too competitive during games, the seniors said.

They enjoy May High and Canasta games on Wednesdays and Fridays, and bingo once a month.

About 30 seniors regularly attend the program.

Community Fest returns to Valley Stream

V

alley Stream’s annual Community Fest will be held this year on Rockaway Avenue on Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

To prepare for it, Festival Committee Chairwoman Marie McNair works with five committee members throughout the year to plan the event. They are tasked with securing sponsors, and working with the Village of Valley Stream and the Valley Stream Chamber of Commerce to put together the annual event.

“The Community Fest is a fine example of volunteers in the community coming up with an idea, partnering with the village and running a highly successful event,” Mayor Ed Fare said.

It was first created in 2012 by James Giordano, a Gibson

resident and vice president of Envision Valley Stream, and David Sabatino, co-owner of Sip This on Rockaway Avenue and president of Envision Valley Stream, as a way to celebrate the village’s diversity.

It has since become a major community event, and more than 10,000 residents attended the festival last fall. There, the children enjoyed art projects, a bounce house and a petting zoo while their parents had the opportunity to shop at local vendors. Last year’s festival also included a car show and food trucks, as well as a performances by local groups.

ew this year, the Valley Stream Classic Car Show is a joint effort between the Valley Stream Lions Club and the village.

Every Thursday this past summer, a handful of car enthusiasts gathered just off of Rockaway Avenue to show off their rides for anyone interested to take a look, with specialty nights interspersed throughout the season to help raise funds for first responders and injured veterans.

“This is a community event where everybody comes for free,

socializes, talks, enjoy live music and share in a cause” Mayor Ed Fare said.

Not to be outdone, Fare also brought his own rare car — a 1999 Chevrolet Corvette — which sporting magnesium rims and a heads-up display among other unusual features, is reportedly one of only six ever made in that configuration.

The car show was part of Valley Stream’s 2019 Summerfest, which included concerts at the Village Green bandshell as well as a farmer’s market at the Hendrickson Park Pool parking lot.

Dogs have their day at the Valley Stream dog run

F

or seven years now, Valley Stream has had its very own dog run, which is open to both village and Town of Hempstead residents and their canine companions, with registration.

Founded by Richard Infeld, who initially petitioned the village for its construction, the dog run is a half-acre spot on the Village Green where dogs big and small can run free with their friends.

The run is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. To sign up to use the dog run, village residents are required to obtain a dog owners license and pay an $18 registration fee. Residents living within the Central High School District must pay a $55 registration fee, and Town of Hempstead residents must pay a $110 registration fee.

tanding on Sunday below the flock of green monk parakeets that have made the roughly 60-foot pine tree overlooking the Blessed Sacrament Church rectory their home, about two-dozen Valley Streamers gathered in October, 2018 — with their pets in tow — happily chatting with neighbors over the loud, staccato chirping of the colorful birds.

Many discussed one another’s accompanying pet dogs, cats and birds, while others, seemingly reacting to the constant, din emanating from overhead, spoke of the urban legend of how the non-native green parrots came to live on Long Island — a broken shipping container at John F. Kennedy Airport a number of years back, bound for a pet shop.

The scene was appropriate for the occasion, where the pets were being blessed with holy water in honor of the Feast of Saint

Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, which every year falls on Oct. 4.

Francis, the Rev. Peter Dugandzic said, was known to live in the wilderness, and the blessing ceremony, as part of the feast celebrating the saint’s life, became a tradition.

“I get such a joy out of getting to see the people with their pets,” he said, noting that this was his 10th year holding the petblessing ceremony at the church. Dugandzic said that normally, he is only able see his parishioners in the church setting, but when accompanied by their animals, he has noticed their personality change.

“They’re so different when they’re around their pets,” he said.

“It’s like they’re with their children.”

Bringing farm-fresh favorites to Valley Stream

alley Streamers enjoyed a farmers’ market in their own neighborhood for the first time this summer.

Sponsored by The Growers Market LLC, the farmers’ market opened at the Arthur J. Hendrickson Park parking lot on June, 2019 and will continue every Thursday from 7 a.m. to noon until Nov. 21. It features more than a dozen vendors selling their freshmade doughnuts, seafood, fruits, vegetables, ice cream, pies and soaps.

All of the products that are sold at the market must be made, caught or grown by the vendor, according to Growers Market founder Ethel Terry. She also verifies that the vendors are licensed, and vendors must show their invoices to prove that they make their own products.

Vendors also accept Women, Infants and Children Program and Nutrition Program for Seniors coupons.

All money raised, Terry said, benefit local businesses and farms.

It takes a village to celebrate Independence Day

A

ccording to former Village Clerk Vinny Eng, before 1992, the last time Valley Stream held its fireworks show was in 1976, at America’s bicentennial.

It was when be began working in the village in 1991, Eng said, that he came up with the idea to bring the tradition back, which except for taking a year off to give neighbors a break, has run consecutively for the past 27 years.

“The mayor at the time was George Donley,” he said. “They said, ‘Vinny if you’re crazy enough to do it, do it’” So, he enlisted the help of Danny Lehner from the now defunct Inflight Newspapers, based locally in Valley Stream, and the two helped form the Valley Stream Fireworks Committee to raise funds for the event.

After Lehner’s death in 1996, the Valley Stream Chamber of Commerce took over raising funds.

“He was president of the chamber,” Eng said. “So it was a natural progression that they would take over the role of the Fireworks Committee.”

Organizing and preparing for an event of such a magnitude is no easy task, requiring a large number of helpers. At least seven

different village departments are consulted in the process, with each having their own role in ensuring the event runs without issue.

Safety precautions, such as street closures and increased security presence, must be made to handle the influx of people to the area.

Eng was responsible the fireworks show ran without a hitch for 25 years until his retirement in 2016. Since then, James Hunter, the deputy village clerk, has taken on Eng’s role.

While the fireworks have largely remained the same, Eng said the entertainment has changed over the years. Originally, live bands were hired, but now DJ’s are hired.

This year, the Chamber of Commerce hired Ace DJ John Piazza, according to Chamber President Dominick Minerva, who had selected him for the job.

“The DJ has been doing a great job entertaining the public before the show,” he said, “getting kids dancing and interactive, and creating a more exciting environment for attendees.”

Additionally, the Bethlehem Assembly of God has provided additional entertainment for the event over the past eight years, including passing out frisbees and beach balls.

A resort in your backyard Valley Stream pool still brings the summer fun

S

ince 1960, the pool at Valley Stream’s Hendrickson Park has been a nearby summer destination for those looking to cool down and exercise.

The facility has undergone a number of renovations over the years, mostly notably of the inclusion of a spray park for children, and the incorporation plant arrangements, courtesy village pool staff member and horticulturist Eugene Boening, but some things, such as its iconic water fountain in the shape of a lion, remain.

“It’s Valley Stream’s hidden jewel,” Mayor Ed Fare said, noting that although facility might not catch the eye of the average resident driving down Merrick Road, upon stepping inside, he said “It’s beautiful and lush, with gardens and banana trees … [Valley Streamers] don’t have to drive far to find a nice, little oasis right here.”

Registration is open for both residents and non-residents within the Central High School District.

Each year since 2014, the group of neighbors on Sylvan Place donate funds raised from their block party to charity in honor of two of their neighbors who died in 2013.

Sylvan Place neighbors honor the ones they’ve lost

S

ince 2014, neighbors on Sylvan Place in Valley Stream have banded together each holiday season to raise funds for charities to honor the memory of two of their own.

As part of their efforts, the group holds a block party, serving food and hot chocolate, and inviting Santa to share in the festivities for their late neighbors Chris Schroeder, who died of cancer in 2013 at age 18, and Michael Smith, who had Down syndrome, and died the same year at age 44.

Last February, the group donated the funds raised from the block party to the Sunrise Association, a non-profit aimed at supporting families with children suffering from cancer in honor of Schroeder, and the Anchor Program Fund, which supports people

with special needs throughout the Town of Hempstead, in honor of Smith.

All told, the group raised $1,500 for each of the two agencies this past year.

“We have been fortunate enough to see our donations grow each year,” said Alex Carr, a Sylvan Place resident and one of the fundraiser’s organizers, “and hope to see this trend continue, and hopefully be able to help out both worthwhile causes in the future.”

The group is already planning its 2019 fundraiser, and it is scheduled to take place on Dec. 14 from 6 to 10 p.m.

Carr added, “We hope to see everyone there!”

Numbers to know Town of Hempstead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads.

Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Democrat Laura Gillen — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office.

The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget.

Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
