VALLEY STREAM GUIDE

A letter from the publishers

W

e are proud to present our annual Valley Stream Guide, a special supplement to the Valley Stream Herald.

Those of us who live here know that Valley Stream is a wonderful place. In this little book, you’ll find many of the organizations and institutions that make it so very special. The purpose of the Guide is to expand upon what the Herald does each week: describe and celebrate this unique community and its many services and organizations. For newcomers, the Guide provides a comprehensive look at all the community has to offer. Longtime residents and business leaders will also find it a handy reference. We hope you enjoy this year’s Guide. We’ve tried to make it the best guide Valley Stream ever published. We also hope you enjoy reading the Valley Stream Herald 52 weeks a year. And no matter how far from home you find yourself, you can read an online version of the Herald at www.LIHerald.com. At our website, you can access the latest stories and special coverage of breaking news including election results. Clifford Richner Publisher

P.S. If you’re not currently receiving the Herald by mail each week, please see our ad on page 25 for subscription information or look for the enclosed subscription envelope, or find us online at www.liherald.com/subscribe. VALLEY STREAM GUIDE

Living in vaLLey stream By Grace PoPPe In 1640, the area that is now known as Valley Stream was purchased by the Dutch West India Company from the Rockaway Indians. Robert Pagan, who emigrated from Scotland in the 1840s, named Valley Stream after seeing the valleys and hills in the northern area and the scenic streams winding through the southern area. In the 1800s, District 13 and 24’s first wooden schoolhouses were built, and in 1923, District 30 opened its first school. Valley Stream became an incorporated village in 1925 when Henry Waldinger was elected president, and that same year the Central High School District was formed. In those days, the schoolhouses were heated with fire places and the wood was retrieved by school boys from nearby houses. Classes were taught by masters who were typically from England, Scotland or Ireland and were chosen for their knowledge of what was known as the 3 Rs: Reading, 'Riting and 'Rithmetic. The community now has five school districts: the Valley Stream Central High School District, Elementary Districts 13, 24 and 30, and Hewlett-Woodmere. The elementary school districts will all be taking extra steps next year to prepare their staff and students for the new Common Core Standards that the New York State Education Department recently implemented. District 24 Assistant superintendent Dan Onorato said that there will be a new literacy program in the upcoming year, and a BOCES initiative to increase security. Superintendent Dr. Nicholas Stirling said that District 30 is ensuring that its staff and students are educated about technology. The Valley Stream Central High School District has had a very successful year with Regents and Advanced Placement scores, and Assistant Superintendent Thomas Troisi expressed how proud school officials are of their AP Scholars. According to the 2012 population estimate, Valley Stream village has a population of 37,646 people living in 12,200 housing units. It is 57 percent white, 19 percent African-American, 22 percent Hispanic and 11 percent Asian,

About 75 percent of the population is 18 and older. The village has an elected five-member board comprised of a mayor and four trustees. An elected village justice presides over the municipal court and the day-to-day operations are run by department supervisors and a clerk. The village has two train stations, its own fire department and library, and more than 100 acres of parkland. Major roads include Sunrise Highway, Merrick Road, Central Avenue, Rockaway Parkway and Rockaway Avenue. The area south of Sunrise Highway is known as Gibson. The village has a recently renovated Community Center that is open seven days a week next to the lake in pictur-

esque Arthur J. Hendrickson Park. The park, located on West Merrick Road, has a pool, miniature golf courses and courts for various sports. The Community Center is also where the Silver Threads senior group meets five days a week. The seniors do knitting and crocheting projects, take shopping trips, have luncheons, play bocce and cards and enjoy daily coffee and snacks. North Valley Stream has about 16,600 residents living in about 5,200 units, according to the 2010 census. It is 50 percent African-American, 29 percent white, 14 percent Hispanic and 13 percent Asian. The Town of Hempstead governs North Valley Stream with an Continued on next page

elected supervisor, six council members, a town clerk and a receiver of taxes. The community is split between the 2nd and 3rd Council districts. North Valley Stream is south of Elmont and Franklin Square. Students living in the east side of the community attend Valley Stream schools, and students in the Alden Terrace neighborhood to the west attend Elmont elementary and Sewanhaka high schools. The Elmont public library, Elmont and Malverne Fire Departments and Sanitary District No. 6 all serve North Valley Stream. Valley Stream State Park is located in North Valley Stream, and offers a picnic area, fireplaces and grills, children's play areas and a variety of sports courts. There are ball fields, cross-country ski trails and nature trails, including a special one for children, at the state park. The park is open year round, seven days a week from 7 a.m. to sunset. South Valley Stream has nearly 6,000

residents living in about 2,000 housing units, according to the 2010 census. It is 52 percent white, 22 percent AfricanAmerican, 18 percent Asian and 10 percent Hispanic. Governed by the Town of Hempstead, the community is home to Forest Road Elementary of District 30 and Robert W. Carbonaro Elementary of District 24. Behind Carbonaro is South High School. South Valley Stream is in the southwest corner of Valley Stream and is separated by Foster’s Creek. Mill Brook is north of the creek, a neighborhood that was built in the 1940s as the community of Green Acres. Linda Tobin Kettering, a real estate agent from Linda Kettering Reality Corp., grew up and still lives in the community. “It was an enclosed neighborhood with a walking path that was built with cul-de-sacs,” she said, adding that these paths made the town very safe. “Eventually, Irwin Chanin bought the property, the mall and the whole area as

a planned community that would be the best suburbia offered.” Although architect and real-estate developer Chanin never finished building the town because of World War II, he will always be known as the man who started the community and worked out a traffic system that was safe for pedestrians, according to The New York Times. President of the Valley Stream Historical Society Guy Ferrara said that Curtiss Field, where Green Acres used to be, had about 800 planes fly in per day between 1928 and 1933. South Valley Stream’s Green Acres Senior Center is located on Flower Road and is one of the 16 senior centers run by the Town of Hempstead. It offers a variety of activities and benefits to its members, including bingo, weekly beach trips, daily lunch and a nutritionist. Just north of the center is the Green Acres mall, a 1.8 millionsquare-foot shopping center with more than 230 stores.

The men and women of this department take great pride in providing the best fire and medical services to local residents and businesses, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The Valley Stream Fire Department is led by its three chiefs. It operates four engines, two hook and ladders, one heavy rescue unit and two ambulances located in five firehouses throughout the village. The firefighters’ training and equipment, both firematically and medically, are state-of-the-art. They are capable of handling nearly any emergency that arises. The Fire Department also has a fire prevention trailer, used to educate children about fire safety in the home. It is regularly seen at schools in Valley Stream during October, which is Fire Prevention Month, as well as other times throughout the year. Although the Valley Stream Fire Department is just a phone call away, there are some things that you can do to keep your family and property safe. Make sure your home is equipped with smoke detectors, test them at least once a month and change the batteries at least twice a year. Carbon monoxide is deadly. The use of a carbon monoxide detector could save your life. Practice Exit Drills in the Home (EDITH) with your family so you can have an escape route and meeting place planned should a fire occur in your home. Also, if your clothing catches fire, remember to stop, drop and roll.

Valley Stream Central HigH SCHool DiStriCt The Valley Stream Central High School District, founded in 1925, had a successful year filled with state awards and high test scores. With a district graduation rate of 99 percent, and 95 percent attending two- or four-year colleges. The district had a record 274 students who earned Advanced Placement Scholar Awards. The district had two scholarship winners in the National Merit Scholarship Program, five students in the National Achievement Scholarship Program, 172 students inducted into the National Honor Society and one student who will be published with her mentor for scientific research. Not only did the students excel academically, they pulled forward in music and athletics, too. There were 67 students selected for the All-County Music Festival and eight students selected for the Long Island String Festival. More than 80 athletes were recognized as all-conference players along with more than 20 scholar athlete teams. The district offers a variety of programs to prepare students for college. There are culinary, science research, performing arts and career and technical programs along with SAT preparation classes and college workshops. There are also writing enrichment classes at the middle school and 23 AP course options at the high schools. There are about 4,600 students in four schools with a professional staff of about 450 in the Valley Stream Central High School District, which is one of only three New York state districts that exclusively covers grades 7-12. Central High School is grades 10-12 and opened on Fletcher Avenue in 1929. Before that, students attended school on Wheeler Avenue. That building was torn down after the new high school was built.

A year later, North and South High Schools were approved on the same referendum and built with identical styles. They opened in 1955 and are the two junior and senior high schools, serving grades 7-12. Students attend these schools after graduating from school in elementary Districts 13, 24 or 30. SchoolS ElEmEntary District 13 Valley Stream District 13 is the oldest and largest of Valley Stream’s elementary school districts. Its first wooden schoolhouse was built in 1858 after the New York State Legislature passed “An Act for the Establishment of Common Schools” in 1812. Before this building, District 13 students walked to nearby districts to attend school. The schoolhouse was replaced in 1872 and 1891; in 1905, the schoolhouse was built as a clapboard school. The present Wheeler Avenue School was built in 1925. The James A. Dever School, then named Corona Avenue, was built in 1950 followed by Howell and Willow Road Schools in 1953. There are about 2,200 students and 200 staff members in the four District 13 schools that serve grades K-6. Wheeler Avenue, James A. Dever, Howell Road and Willow Road run by the motto, “Where children come first.” The district encompasses part of the Village of Valley Stream, North Valley Stream, Malverne, Franklin Square and Elmont. This past year, Wheeler Avenue, which was built in 1925, celebrated the 25th anniversary of its newspaper. Student-written and published twice a year, the Wheeler Squealer has been run by teacher Guy Jacob since the beginning of its time. Fifth- and sixth-grade students are chosen by their teachers to stay after school and write the paper. Wheeler Avenue, Willow Road and Howell Road hosted a program this past year, “Beautiful Me…the Emma, Alyson and Katie project,” a self-esteem program funded by the Hance Foundation to honor the three Hance daughters who died in a horrific accident in 2009. The students and teachers thought the program very successful and it will continue next year for fifth-grade girls. The District 13 Educational Foundation, founded in 1996, held its first golf outing this year raising more than $4,500 under the direction of then-President Emilie Stris and committee chairman Frank Chiachiere. Next year, the district will continue to align its curriculum to the new Common Core Learning Standards implemented by New York State. Sean Douglas, president of the Board of Education, said, “We’re going to really try to get our staff and teachers the support they need to reach these new standards for our children.”

ElEmEntary district 24 District 24 was formed in 1894 from sections of Hewlett-Woodmere District 14 and Valley Stream District 13. Its first schoolhouse, which was built around 1879, was replaced in 1896 and then again in 1907 with the present Brooklyn Avenue School. The William L. Buck School opened in 1952 followed by the Robert W. Carbonaro School in 1954, then called Harbor Road School. There are about 1,100 students and 220 professional staff members in the three elementary schools that serve kinderarten through sixth-grade. The district prides itself on its students’ high academic achievement and scores on the New York State tests. The district's 20,000 community residents have continually supported the schools by approving the annual budget and getting involved. This past spring, teachers and principals from the three elementary schools took part in the Spartan Race to help raise money for an Oceanside day camp that benefits children with cancer. Brooklyn Avenue hosted its annual read-aloud in May and each class had a visitor read to them. William L. Buck students

promoted healthy hearts by participating in Jump Rope for Heart this March. Kindergarteners at the Robert W. Carbonaro School made gingerbread houses with their families and classmates this past winter. Assistant superintendent Dan Onorato said that the district is upgrading security procedures next year; it will be a part of the BoTie network telephone system that will allow BOCES to monitor all three school buildings. Next year, District 24 will begin a new literacy program, Taxi Dog, which will enable students to experience various real-life situations. “It focuses on self-awareness through the use of puppets, videos and discussion," Onorato said, adding that it will help children regulate their behavior. SchoolS ElEmEntary district 30 District 30 was formed in 1923 from parts of Valley Stream School Districts 13 and 24, and Elmont District 16. Its first schoolhouse, called the Little Framed School, was a temporary building that lasted from 1923 to 1927. Clear Stream Avenue opened in 1924 and Shaw Avenue opened in 1951; Forest Road School opened in 1953 followed by the Washington Avenue School, which later closed. The three schools in District 30 serve approximately 1,500 students in grades K-6. This past school year, Shaw Avenue was nominated by the New York State Education Department as a National Blue Ribbon school because of its achievement on the 2011 New York State state assessments. The education department also designated each school in District 30 as a “Reward School.” Third-graders at Shaw Avenue put on a musical in May, “Character Matters,” that taught lessons about positive character traits and treating one another properly. Forest Road School started its own Lego club after the district’s enrichment program launched a Lego robotics program to help students with science, technology, engineering and math. The three schools offer a variety of activities, such as performing arts programs, gifted and talented education, before and after school clubs, integrated technology projects and home-school connections. Programs implemented in recent years included Latin for grades 4-6, an elementary science program for third grade, lab write-up instruction for sixth grade and an integrated ELA/social studies curriculum for all students. “Over the past several years, District 30 has taken steps to enrich the curriculum and align it with the Common Core Standards,” said Superintendent Dr. Nicholas Stirling. The Board of Education and administration, he added, have also developed new programs that focus on technology, including an iPad program. “Through this program, instructors analyze data from student assess-

District 30, committed to incorporating technology in the classroom, also began a new typing course for all second- through sixth-graders. Clear Stream Avenue, which brings back its kindergarten program for the first time in a decade this coming year, will celebrate its 90th anniversary in the upcoming year. Stirling said that the district looks forward to this celebration. “While many things have changed in the field of education in the past 90 years," he said, "one thing has remained constant: our unwavering dedication to the students of Valley Stream District 30.” Board of Education President: Carolyn Torres Vice President: Cristobal Stewart Trustees: Elise Antonelli, Kenneth Cummings, James Lavery District Clerk: Anne O’Brien Business meetings are held the fourth Monday of each month at 8 p.m. in the Shaw Avenue School library.

Senior citizen ServiceS Green Acres senior center

Green Acres Senior Center, founded in 1967, is one of 16 senior centers run by the Town of Hempstead. Although the majority of its 250 members are from Valley Stream, the center is open to all town residents 60 and older. Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray called Green Acres “a whirlwind of activity.” With bingo, beach trips, billiards, sewing, ceramics, a glee club, cards, luncheons, arts and crafts and supermarket trips, this senior center guarantees much more than free membership. “We’re working hard to ensure that these are truly the ‘golden years’ for the senior citizens,” Murray said. Every week, Green Acres members get takeout and three hot lunches. The center has its own nutritionist to ensure that each member’s health needs are met. Green Acres holds a general meeting every month with its executive board of seven members elected by the seniors. Solon Chalmers, who has been coming to the center for about 10 years, is the former president of Green Acres. “This is a great place to get together and meet some of the other seniors,” he said. “I come here almost every day, and there’s always a lot to do.” Chalmers said that the most popular activities are bingo and weekly beach trips. Bingo is hosted a couple of times a week and lasts from 1 to 2:30 p.m. with almost everyone at the center participating. On Thursdays in the summertime,

Members of the Green Acres Senior Center excitedly begin a weekly bingo game after their afternoon lunch. it is Green Acres’ turn to visit Lido Beach as a part of the program called “All Roads Lead to Lido.” This popular 10-week program offers free health services, crafts and games. The Town of Hempstead’s other 16 senior centers also take part in this program and attend different days of the week. All town senior centers include additional activities such as physical fitness classes, discussions about humanities and current events, piano lessons, painting, macramé, sculpture, calligraphy, creative writing, poetry, shuffleboard, bowling, intergenerational programs, films and speakers. Available programs include the Bereavement Support Group, which meets twice a month and provides a means of sharing grief, and the Caregivers’ Support Group, which meets once a month and supports those who are tending to a

friend or family member. Both programs are held at the Merrick Senior Center. For more information, call 868-4777. Experienced Art Students Enrichment League (EASEL) is a daytime art league held at the Oceanside Senior Center where seniors can paint and enjoy art demonstrations, field trips, workshops and much more. Senior citizen ServiceS Silver ThreadS

The village's Silver Threads Senior Club offers a plethora of activities five days a week at the recently renovated Valley Stream Community Center in Arthur J. Hendrickson Park. From donating knitting and crocheting projects to Nassau University Medical Center and South Nassau Communities Hospital, to shopping trips, luncheons and birthday bagels, there is rarely a dull moment at Silver Threads. The club offers different activities every day of the week, including bocce, chair yoga, rummikub, beauty days and more. The best attendance, however, occurs on card-playing and bingo days. Most of the seniors said that their favorite part of the club is the action-packed card games. The men sit in a different room than the women because they get too competitive during games, the seniors said. They enjoy May High and Canasta games on Wednesdays and Fridays, and bingo once a month. Not only does Silver Threads have a welcoming atmosphere, seniors also commented on how clean and neat the Community Center is since its renovation. Run by the village of Valley Stream, membership for Silver Threads is free. Seniors can utilize the pool and participate in other activities at Hendrickson Park. In the summertime, about 30 seniors regularly attend. “It’s always a nice, social day,” said Arline Massa, a Silver Threads member for three years. Diane Johnson, member for the past seven years, agreed.

The six members of the council are elected from one of six councilmatic districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have a four-year term of office. The supervisor serves as the chief executive officer of town government. She presides over all town board meetings, directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments, employing just more than 2,100 people. As the chief financial officer of the township, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget.
