Dear Neighbor,

We are proud to present the 2026 Herald Top Lawyers of Long Island guide, which showcases the region’s most accomplished legal professionals.
This year’s guide features more than 50 outstanding attorneys and firms from across Long Island, each selected for their exceptional expertise, integrity, and commitment to the communities they serve. These professionals play a vital role in guiding individuals and businesses through complex legal matters, and we are honored to recognize their dedication to their clients and our region.
We were delighted to celebrate these distinguished honorees on April 22 at the Heritage Club at Bethpage in Farmingdale. Our sincere gratitude to the many individuals and organizations who contributed to the success of this special evening, including our presenting partner, Steno. Through its commitment to advancing services, technology, and innovation, Steno continues to support and elevate the legal community.
Thank you, also, to all of the sponsors listed on the next page that made the event possible.
A highlight of the evening was the keynote address from Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney. District Attorney Tierney shared insights from one of the most closely followed cases in recent memory: the Gilgo Beach murder investigation. His remarks underscored the complexity of modern criminal justice, the importance of persistence in pursuing the truth, and the critical role that legal professionals play in upholding justice and public trust.
Congratulations once again to the 2026 honorees. Thank you for your leadership and unwavering dedication to excellence.
Warmly,

Stuart Richner CEO and Publisher

One initiative from the past year that I am particularly proud of is my participation on my firm’s Recruitment Committee. In this role, I am actively involved in evaluating candidates, participating in interviews, and helping to assess how prospective hires would fit within the firm’s culture and long term goals. Having transitioned from the public sector to private practice myself, I bring a perspective that values not only strong legal skills, but also adaptability, professionalism, and a collaborative mindset.

For over 25 years, Leslie Tayne has focused her career on helping business owners, individuals, and debtors find real solutions to overwhelming debt. Leslie has built her practice on hard work, perseverance, and trusted relationships. That approach has led to ongoing success negotiating with national banks, credit unions, collection agencies, and creditor law firms — all for the benefit of her clients.
For her work, Leslie has been awarded prestigious awards such as NY Super Lawyers for nine years, a distinction awarded to no more than 5% of attorneys in New York.
After graduating from law school, Leslie became a leader in two male-dominated industries — law and finance. She grew her firm while raising three children as a single parent. She is also the author of the bestselling book “Life and Debt.” Today, she continues to lead Tayne Law Group, contributes as a financial expert across national media being featured in The New York Times, US News, the Wall Street Journal, Newsday, NBC, Fox News and many others. Leslie gives back to her community through her service as a board member and a volunteer for the Guide Dog Foundation and America's VetDogs.
Canyou discuss a majorchallengeyou've faced inyourcareerandhowyouovercameit?
One of the most significant challenges I have faced in my career was building a law firm from the ground up as a single parent of three children while simultaneously establishing myself as a leader in two industries, law and finance, that still remain maledominated fields. There were moments early on when I felt the weight of those competing demands, and rather than allowing those pressures to slow me down, I leaned into the values that have always driven me: hard work, perseverance, and a genuine commitment to the people I serve. I also recognized early on that creating a practice built on trust and results, rather than fear or intimidation, would set Tayne Law Group apart. That decision proved to be the foundation of everything we have built. Today, Tayne Law Group has resolved millions of dollars of debt and has helped thousands of clients reclaim their financial footing. I am proud that I was able to achieve those results without compromising my integrity or the client-first culture I set out to create.

Our elder care and estate planning firm has grown organically over the last 28 years and due to our growth and volume, we needed to implement a more structured operating system inclusive of standardized processes and more intentional meetings. We researched and discovered EOS and have since been implementing this system for the last 4 months. EOS has improved our work flow, communication and clarity in addition to ensuring each of our team members are the right person in the right seat.
Canyou discuss a majorchallengeyou've faced inyourcareerandhowyouovercameit?
A major challenge that I think all business owners face is finding and keeping good personnel. We have a great team at this point and that is mostly due to the culture we instill in the office. We have a “business casual” approach to how we interact and work together. While all clients are serviced in a professional and timely manner which is proven out by the referrals and renewals we receive, we do not foster a high-pressure environment with extreme deadlines and high hours of work.

ALEXANDER E. SKLAVOS, ESQ. Founder & Principal Attorney SKLAVOS LAW GROUP, P.C.
In a profession centered on conflict, The Sklavos Law Group, P.C. is built on something a little unexpected: a husband-and-wife team devoted to helping people through the breakdown of marriage and family relationships with both strength and humanity. There is, perhaps, a certain irony in that - but also something deeply fitting. At its core, matrimonial law is not just about endings. It is about protecting people, guiding families through change, and helping clients find a path forward with dignity.
Founded by Alexander E. Sklavos, Esq., the firm has earned a reputation for exceptional matrimonial representation grounded in experience, toughness, and heart. For nearly three decades, Alexander has represented clients in divorce, custody, support, and complex family law matters with the kind of steady confidence that comes only from years in the courtroom and at the negotiating table. Clients turn to him not only because he is an effective advocate, but because he understands that behind every case file is a family, a future, and often a person trying to hold it all together.
Together, the husband-and-wife leadership of the firm has shaped a culture with a simple but powerful mission: to find kindness and compassion wherever possible. That does not mean weakness, and it does not mean backing down. It means treating people with respect, leading with clarity, and recognizing that even in the hardest cases, decency matters. But when kindness is not enough, The Sklavos Law Group is known for being prepared, strategic, and relentless in protecting its clients and their children, their finances, and their future.
This recognition honors not only excellence in matrimonial law, but a way of practicing it: with compassion where possible, and with strength wherever necessary.

In 1997 as a former teacher, I had an idea of connecting attorneys with elementary and middle school students to foster meaningful one-onone relationships that inspire positive growth and goal setting. Thus began the Nassau County Bar Association’s Student Mentoring Program. Today, this program serves eight school districts, culminating with a luncheon for both our students and their mentors at the Nassau County Bar Association. I was honored this past year when the program was renamed the NCBA Alan B. Hodesh Mentoring Program.

After spending most of his over 30 years of practice as a trial and transactional attorney, handling primarily intellectual property, commercial litigation, and healthcare matters, and as General Counsel representing companies in markets such as salty snacks (as General Counsel for Robert’s American Gourmet, the manufacturer and distributor of the iconic “Pirate’s Booty”) and beer, wine and liquor (representing BH Group, the manufacturer and distributor of “Notorious Pink”), Andrew pivoted to cannabis and, thereafter, to psychedelics.
Since that time, Andrew has used the skills he’s honed as an IP and Healthcare lawyer including assisting inventors and growing companies in formulating business and “go to market” strategies, as well as in assisting life science companies on regulatory strategies for their products and services, to representing clients in and around the emerging psychedelics industry. Andrew is considered a leading expert on cannabis & psychedelics and represents businesses and individuals at every level of the supply chain. Clients include medical providers, state-licensed adult-use marijuana and hemp cultivators, processors, delivery companies, distributors, testing laboratories and dispensaries, whether vertically integrated or operating as standalone businesses, as well as investors in those businesses. He also represents a wide range of vendors and ancillary players that supply their products and services to the cannabis and psychedelics industries, from raw materials, technology, advertising and marketing, consumption products, beverage, and security companies. Andrew regularly speaks on cannabis and psychedelics, often looking towards the future in anticipation of regulatory volatility to help ensure industry participants are prepared for necessary operational and procedural reorganization.
Andrew is a founding member of Common Culture, a company that operationalizes and operates adult-use retail dispensaries across New York State and beyond. Andrew has utilized his expertise and vision to build a program which provides much-needed executive and high-level fractional services to early-stage and growthfocused dispensaries.
Andrew is a former Executive Board Member of The JUSTÜS Foundation, an organization dedicated to ensuring and facilitating the entry of legacy operators to the legal cannabis market. As such, Andrew has assisted social equity and justice-involved applicants pro bono in structuring their businesses and navigating through the licensure process.

CHRISSY GRIGOROPOULOS-PELEYTAY, ESQ. Founding Attorney
Chrissy Grigoropoulos-Peleytay is the Founding Attorney of The Grigoropoulos Law Group, a premier New York personal injury and workers’ compensation firm built on one core belief: exceptional cases deserve exceptional representation.
From day one, Chrissy rejected the high-volume, assembly-line model that dominates the industry. Instead, she built GLG as a “Neiman Marcus” firm in a “Walmart world,” selective, strategic, and relentlessly focused on maximizing value for every client. Her philosophy is simple: prepare every case as if it is going to trial, and the results will follow.
That approach has driven the firm’s rapid growth and reputation as a powerhouse across New York. With a sophisticated intake system, aggressive litigation strategy, and a team trained to treat every file like a high-exposure case, GLG consistently delivers outcomes that outperform expectations.
Most recently, the firm secured a $4.75 million settlement on the eve of trial, its largest result to date, a direct result of preparation, pressure, and precision. It is not luck. It is leverage.
Chrissy leads with the mindset of both a trial attorney and a CEO, blending legal strategy with elite-level operations. Under her leadership, GLG has built a reputation for pressure, preparation, and results that speak for themselves.
Some lawyers talk. At GLG, we prepare, we pressure, and we get results.
What pivotal moment or decision has had the mostsignificantimpactonyoursuccessin2026?
The pivotal shift in 2026 I made was deciding to run the firm like a business, not just a law practice. I stopped tolerating gaps in accountability. I tightened structure, elevated leadership, and built systems that force consistency, especially around client contact, medical treatment timelines, and case progression. We strive to be the best year after year!
Canyoushareaspecificprojectorinitiativefrom thepastyearthatyou'reparticularlyproudof?
This past year, I was focused on growing Grigor Law while my mother was hospitalized. During that time, I built a structured operating system from intake through resolution while balancing life with three kids under four. My mom ultimately lost her fight with cancer on March 2. It wasn’t easy, but we keep raising our standards for our clients when it matters most.

What pivotal moment or decision has had the mostsignificantimpactonyoursuccessin2026?
Simply saying yes: Almost 20 years ago I received a file from a fellow partner in the firm involving an Association of Horsemen who wanted to submit a legislative memorandum in opposition to a piece of proposed legislation then pending before the NYS legislature which sought to modify the workers compensation insurance laws and independent contractor laws throughout the NYS Racing Industry. At the time I had never written to legislators about proposed legislation, knew precious little about independent contractor laws, next to nothing about workers compensation insurance laws, and even less about horse racing. Nonetheless, when asked if I would take on the matter, I said yes. Over the past two decades, that decision encouraged me to “just say yes” time and again and has resulted in my establishing an equine practice that has been remarkably enjoyable and professionally fulfilling introducing me to variety of owners, trainers, and horsemen/horsemen associations throughout the industry. It changed my life and my career, all for the best. It’s good to say yes!

The conversation around AI in legal practice has shifted. The question is no longer whether law firms should adopt artificial intelligence, it’s how to implement it strategically while maintaining the confidentiality and ethical standards that legal work demands.
For Long Island’s legal community, this matters now. Firms across the region are watching competitors gain efficiency advantages through AI-powered transcript analysis, document review and case preparation. The gap between early adopters and firms still relying entirely on manual processes is widening rapidly.
The stakes are higher for law firms than most industries. Consumer-grade AI platforms like ChatGPT may store user inputs to improve their models, a significant risk when processing confidential client information. When an associate pastes deposition testimony into a generalpurpose AI tool to generate a summary, that privileged information may become part of a training dataset accessible to the platform’s other users.
Legal-specific AI platforms are architected differently. The distinction isn’t about the underlying technology, it’s about implementation, security infrastructure and compliance frameworks. Purpose-built legal AI includes zero data retention policies, SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA compliance, comprehensive audit trails, and enterprisegrade encryption.
When firms evaluate AI vendors, three factors separate appropriate solutions from risky ones:
• Security and compliance credentials: Does the vendor maintain SOC 2 Type II certification? Are there clear data retention policies? What audit capabilities exist to track who accessed what information and when?
• Practical value: The tool should solve real workflow problems, not create new complexity. What’s the learning curve for adoption? How does it scale from personal injury cases to complex commercial litigation?
• Verification and accuracy: How can outputs be verified against source materials? Does the tool provide clear citations that attorneys can check? What safeguards exist against AI hallucinations and fabricated “facts”?
Traditional deposition analysis illustrates both the opportunity and the risk. Reviewing hundreds of pages of testimony to identify contradictions and extract key admissions typically requiresdays or weeks of attorney or paralegal time. AI can process multiple depositions instantly to identify contradictory statements and generate impeachment packages with precise citations.
But implementation details determine whether this efficiency gain comes with acceptable risk. Purposebuilt legal AI provides instant analysis with clickable page-line citations, allowing attorneys to verify every insight against the original testimony. Security-first design means SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA compliance with zero data retention agreements and no model training on client data.
Organizations implementing legal-specific AI typically see major reductions in document review time, improved accuracy in identifying key evidence, and significant cost savings on routine legal tasks.
Bar associations across the country are developing AI guidance with significant variation between states, but common themes have emerged. Competence requires understanding AI tools, including their limitations and risks. Confidentiality

means protecting client information when using AI platforms. Verification demands that all AI outputs receive human review before use.
Long Island firms should develop comprehensive AI usage guidelines addressing security, accuracy verification, and ethical obligations before rolling out tools firm-wide. Start with specific, well-defined pilot programs where AI can demonstrate clear value while minimizing risk.
Successful AI adoption requires a systematic approach. Audit current AI usage across your organization to understand what tools are already in use. Evaluate legal-specific solutions designed for legal work rather than consumer platforms. Pilot strategic use cases by starting with highimpact, low-risk applications. Establish training programs to ensure users understand capabilities and limitations.
Your clients already expect faster turnarounds, deeper insights, and more competitive pricing. AI provides tools to deliver all three while maintaining quality and security standards. The legal industry stands at an inflection point— some firms are leveraging technology to deliver faster, more thorough services while others struggle with outdated workflows.
The competitive advantage is available. The implementation approach determines whether AI becomes a strategic asset or a source of liability

Can you discuss a major challenge you've faced in yourcareerandhowyouovercameit?
I graduated from Hofstra Law School in 1999. After graduation I never sat for the NYS Bar. I hung my degree on the wall and put a small hammer next to it with the writing "in case of emergency break glass!" I was in the entertainment business from a young age and stayed with it post law school until Covid came along. Twenty years removed I studied and sat for the 2020 Bar Exam! The 2020 NYS Bar Exam was only being offered to first time test takers, which I qualified for, and administered on-line. Having passed the NYS Bar I proudly started my law practice and naturally gravitated to the courtroom to become a litigator.
Inwhatways doyou contribute toyourcommunity or industry beyond your professional role, and why is communityinvolvementimportanttoyou?
I have taken pro bono cases to both help my community and gain valuable court room experience. Having built a vast network from my business career, to my circle of friends and family, I am able to assist them with legal matters and help people that I deeply care about.

What pivotal moment or decision has had the mostsignificantimpactonyoursuccessin2026?
It is difficult to identify one significant pivotal moment or decision from 2025, because, in all honesty, there were many. Trust and Estate Litigation is a very contentious area of law. Often, it involves litigation between family members who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Death triggers grief and brings to fruition long-standing and unresolved family issues. I am proud of how my team and I diligently and zealously litigated these cases for our clients this past year. However, in 2025, more than any other year, I was quite proud of how many of these contentious cases we resolved favorably on behalf of our clients. Although it is very rare - almost unheard of - that the resolution of an estate litigation results in the reunification of a family, it does provide our clients with a sense of finality and acceptance. It allows them to move onward without the cloud of family litigation shadowing their day-to-day lives.

CHAD J. LAVEGLIA Ceo & Trial Lawyer LAW OFFICE
Chad J. LaVeglia is a trial attorney with over 12 years of litigation experience across criminal defense, civil rights, family law and insurance defense. As CEO and Chief Litigator of his own firm, he has built a reputation as one of New York's most fearless advocates — taking on government overreach and winning.
Chad made national headlines as the sole attorney in New York to successfully challenge unconstitutional mandates. He followed that with a landmark victory reinstating 16 wrongfully terminated New York City workers and overturning the unconstitutional regulation leading to their termination. He then did it again for 32 New York City DOE teachers stripped of their livelihoods.
With 34 jury trials to verdict, over 90 contested hearings argued, his courtroom record speaks for itself. He has represented NYPD officers, federal agents, judges, and public servants in some of the most consequential cases of our time.
Recognized as a Super Lawyers Rising Star (Top 2.5% in NY) three years in a row and featured on Fox News, ABC, Newsmax, and in the New York Post, Chad LaVeglia doesn't just practice law — he shapes it.
What pivotal moment or decision has had the mostsignificantimpactonyoursuccessin2026?
Some of the bravest public servants I've ever met came to me after losing a case they should have won. They needed an appeal. They couldn't afford my fees. I took it anyway. That decision reminded me why I became a lawyer — not to build a practice, but to use whatever talent I have to help deserving people fight for justice. I'll keep taking those cases. The financial calculus will never outweigh the obligation I feel to people who've sacrificed for this country and simply need someone willing and strong enough to stand with them.

What pivotal moment or decision has had the mostsignificantimpactonyoursuccessin2026?
One of the most pivotal decisions I made this year was taking on a Union whose members were being failed — both by their employer and by prior counsel. The employer was deliberately delaying the filing of Workers' Compensation claims, leaving injured workers without medical treatment or wage replacement for up to six months. Stepping in to fight for those workers reaffirmed why I practice law — and it opened the door to the kind of meaningful, mission-driven work that has defined my success in 2026

ALEXIS EPSTEIN Associate
BARKET EPSTEIN KEARON ALDEA AND LOTURCO, LLP
Alexis Epstein is a criminal defense attorney with Barket Epstein Kearon Aldea & LoTurco, LLP, where her practice focuses on motion practice, mitigation and trial advocacy. She regularly represents clients in serious and complex criminal matters, including vehicular offenses and vehicular homicide cases.
Alexis previously worked at the Miami-Dade Public Defender’s Office and the Legal Aid Society of New York City, two of the most respected public defender offices in the nation. Across Florida and New York State criminal courts, she conducted more than 100 hearings and depositions and tried multiple cases to verdict, including a felony gun case and an assault case involving sexual allegations, for which she obtained not-guilty verdicts.
Since joining the firm, Alexis has continued to litigate high-stakes criminal matters, including trying a felony course of sexual misconduct case, handling vehicular and vehicular homicide cases, and assisting as third chair in a high-profile federal civil rights trial. She has represented hundreds of clients charged with misdemeanor and felony offenses, including domestic violence, sex offenses, firearms charges, DWI, drug cases, and serious vehicular offenses.
Alexis is highly skilled in written and oral advocacy and has filed and argued numerous motions resulting in dismissals and favorable rulings. She is admitted to practice in New York and Florida. Most recently, she secured retroactive Youthful Offender status for a client, eliminating the long-term consequences of a criminal conviction.
She serves on the Board of Directors of the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and as Chair of the Emerging Defenders Committee, and also coaches a high school mock trial team.
Canyoushareaspecificprojectorinitiativefrom thepastyearthatyou'reparticularlyproudof?
One project I’m particularly proud of from the past year was successfully securing a retroactive youthful offender petition for a client who had been carrying the burden of a felony conviction from her childhood. This case was especially meaningful because it wasn’t just about legal relief, but it was about restoring opportunity and dignity. When the petition was granted, it meant she was finally free from many of the barriers that had limited her access to employment, housing, and other opportunities. Being able to help remove that weight and give her a genuine second chance was incredibly rewarding.

BROOKE MCDONALD Associate SALENGER, SACK, KIMMEL & BAVARO, LLP
Brooke McDonald began her legal career at Salenger, Sack, Kimmel & Bavaro as a law student intern in 2021, where she developed a strong interest in medical malpractice and personal injury law. She now serves as an Associate Attorney, handling a range of matters including sexual abuse, general liability, and medical malpractice cases, with experience in car accidents, slip-and-fall incidents and dog bite cases.
Brooke has played an active role in multiple trials, including one of New York State’s first Child Victims Act cases in 2022, and has secured numerous CVA settlements, including $2.4 million in 2025 and $1.125 million in 2026. As part of the firm’s medical malpractice trial team, she contributed to securing verdicts of $5.7 million and $1.82 million in Nassau County involving orthopedic negligence. Her role in the $1.82 million verdict earned her recognition among New York’s Top 50 Jury Verdicts for personal injury.
Her advocacy is shaped by a personal experience with medical error, informing a practical and clientfocused approach to litigation.
What pivotal moment or decision has had the mostsignificantimpactonyoursuccessin2026?
A pivotal moment in my success this year was serving as first chair on a summary jury trial in Kings County and securing a plaintiff’s verdict, marking a true turning point in my development as a trial attorney. This experience allowed me to lead every aspect of the case, trust my instincts and advocate in my own voice. It was especially meaningful to have my mentor serve as second chair, making it a full-circle moment where I could apply the skills and strategies I learned while stepping into a leadership role. The experience not only strengthened my trial abilities but also deepened my confidence in handling high-stakes litigation independently.

Two results stand out. The first is a $50 million settlement on behalf of a motorcycle rider who suffered a traumatic brain injury in a collision with a delivery truck. The second is a $40.3 million medical malpractice verdict for a stroke victim who was failed by two Long Island hospitals. Both cases involved catastrophically injured clients going up against powerful, well-resourced defendants. Holding those parties accountable for their wrongdoing, and securing the financial resources that these clients will need for a lifetime of future medical care, is exactly what our firm was founded to do. It gives me great pride to help these individuals and their families begin to put their lives back together after such traumatic events.

Any working parent knows it can be challenging to focus on raising your family the best you can, while also devoting so much time to building and then cultivating your professional career. I first sought justice by prosecuting crime as an Assistant District Attorney in the New York County District Attorney’s Office. I married my loving husband and then made a challenging transition to work as a trial attorney alongside some of New York’s best medical malpractice defense attorneys. I tried cases successfully, while my husband and I raised three wonderful children. Years passed and perspectives evolved, and I eventually determined that I could renew my goal of seeking justice by helping those who were unnecessarily hurt by medical malpractice. My conversion proved fulfilling. I am able to utilize decades of experience to represent patients, who have often suffered from the kind of catastrophic injuries that can shatter families.

Our $40.3 million medical malpractice verdict on behalf of a client who suffered devastating injuries after two Long Island hospitals failed to administer proper stroke treatment. Holding these institutions accountable for their systemic failures not only brought a measure of justice to our client and his family, but it also sends a message to hospital systems that lapses in stroke treatment protocols have real, life-altering consequences. This verdict will help elevate the standard of medical care in our community and represents why we do this work.
Canyou discuss a majorchallengeyou've faced inyourcareerandhowyouovercameit?
One of the biggest challenges I have encountered was the transition from big-firm corporate defense work representing major financial institutions to plaintiff-side advocacy at Finz & Finz. Switching sides meant fundamentally reframing how I think about the law. It's no longer about protecting powerful institutions; it's about holding them accountable. The $40 million stroke verdict we recently obtained against two Long Island hospitals, and our recent $50 million settlement against a major trucking company, are exactly the kind of results that tells me I made the right choice.
