A community that cares Rockville Centre nonprofits bring residents together to support families, expand opportunities and make a lasting difference at home and beyond

ockville Centre’s strong sense of community is reflected in the many nonprofit organizations that turn compassion, personal experience and local involvement into meaningful action. From supporting individuals with autism and families affected by cancer to creating inclusive opportunities and enriching public education, these organizations address important needs while bringing residents together. Their work extends far beyond fundraising, creating programs, resources and connections that continue to make a difference in Rockville Centre and surrounding communities.

RVC Blue Speaks RVC Blue Speaks is a volunteer-run nonprofit dedicated to promoting autism awareness and acceptance while providing meaningful support to individuals with autism and their families. Tony and Mary Lou Cancellieri founded the organization in 2017 after their grandson, Louis, was diagnosed with autism, transforming their family’s experience into a broader mission of inclusion and community advocacy.

Guided by a vision of a world in which people of all abilities are included, accepted and appreciated, RVC Blue Speaks raises money through initiatives including its annual Light It Up Blue Gala, with 100 percent of donations supporting families and autism-related programs.

The organization has raised more than $750,000. Its efforts have funded scholarships for students on the autism spectrum, supported Adelphi University’s Bridges Program, provided employment training through the Winters Center for Autism and helped the Rockville Centre Police Department become New York’s first sensory-inclusive certified police force.

Through education, advocacy, fundraising and community partnerships, RVC Blue Speaks continues to expand opportunities, encourage inclusion and improve the quality of life for individuals with autism and their families in Rockville Centre and beyond.

Alice Moreno/Herald More than 150 participants gathered at Pickleball Prime in Mineola in June for the Mary Ruchalski Foundation’s inaugural pickleball tournament, raising funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research.

The Mary Ruchalski Foundation The Mary Ruchalski Foundation is a Rockville Centre nonprofit dedicated to honoring the life and legacy of Mary Ruchalski while advancing the fight against pediatric cancer. Mary’s mother, Carol Ruchalski, founded the organization after Mary died from rhabdomyosarcoma in 2018 at age 12, transforming her family’s loss into a mission to raise awareness, fund lifesaving research and support families affected by childhood cancer.

The organization has contributed nearly $1 million to pediatric cancer research grants and provided more than $200,000 in direct assistance to families facing a childhood cancer diagnosis. The foundation also sponsors quarterly meals at the Ronald McDonald House in New York City and brings the community together through events including the annual Mary Cup swim meet and the Light the Village Gold ceremony each September in recognition of Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month.

Inspired by Mary’s athleticism, resilience and joyful spirit, the foundation continues to advocate for better treatments and increased funding for pediatric cancer research. Through research, education, family support and community involvement, the Mary Ruchalski Foundation ensures Mary’s legacy lives on while offering hope to children and families facing pediatric cancer.

Rockville Centre Breast Cancer Coalition The Rockville Centre Breast Cancer Coalition is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by breast cancer throughout southern Nassau County.

Founded in 2017, the organization provides financial assistance, educational resources and compassionate support to help residents navigate treatment and the many challenges that can accompany a breast cancer diagnosis.

The coalition has expanded its reach beyond Rockville Centre to more than 40 communities, assisting more than 100 women and their families. Its specialized programs include RVCBCC Cares, which supports those facing financial hardship; the Metastatic Fund, which assists people living with metastatic breast cancer; and the Bereavement Fund, which provides support to families after the loss of a loved one.

The coalition also supports breast cancer research, promotes education and awards an annual student scholarship that encourages community service and awareness. Through dedicated volunteers, local partnerships and grassroots fundraising, the Rockville Centre Breast Cancer Coalition continues to provide practical assistance, compassionate support and hope to individuals and families affected by breast cancer.

Rockville Centre Education Foundation The Rockville Centre Education Foundation is an independent nonprofit dedicated to enriching public education and expanding learning opportunities for students in the Rockville Centre school district. Established in 1991, the foundation supports innovative classroom experiences by funding projects developed by teachers and administrators that encourage creativity, curiosity and academic achievement for students in kindergarten through grade 12.

Through proceeds from its annual gala and other fundraising efforts, the foundation awards grants each year following a thorough review process, helping bring new educational programs, resources and experiences into local schools. 1. Veterans Park Veterans Park is one of Rockville Centre's signature community recreation areas, located adjacent to the John A. Anderson Recreation Center. The park features athletic courts, open green space, walking paths and memorials honoring military veterans, making it a destination for both recreation and community gatherings.

In 2024, the park was enhanced with the opening of Mr. B's Inclusive Playground, a fully accessible play area named in honor of longtime Recreation Superintendent Anthony "Mr. B" Brunetta.
