NoveMbeR

The village has long hosted annual races, which include a one-mile Fun Run, as well as a 5K and 10K

Santa and his elves often make an appearance at the village’s tree lighting.

Marty Bevilacqua, a 30-year resident of Rockville Centre, sculpted a scene from “Winnie the Pooh” in January 2018. He is known around the village for his creations in front of his North Village Avenue home.

re t n e C e l l i v k c o in R The history of Rockville Centre began on the banks of Mill River in the 1700s, when the first settlers in the area built their homes and their mills. In 1776, a fight broke out between a group of hidden Tories and rebels in a swamp near Anthony DeMott’s mill. It was in this fight that the first blood was spilled on Long Island during the American Revolution. In the 1800s, Mordecai Rock Smith had taken over operation of the mill and pond that DeMott had owned. He renamed them Smith Mill and Smith Pond. Smith became a reverend at the local Sand Hole Methodist Church and a pillar of the community. In 1848, Robert Pettit opened a general store in his home on Merrick Road. He applied to the federal government for permission to open a post office. Pettit wanted to honor Smith by naming the town after him, but the names Smithville, Smithburg, Smithfield and Smithtown were already in use. Even Rockville was taken, until Pettit added Centre to the name, creating the community of Rockville Centre. (For more historical facts, see pages 14-16 and 18-19). Today, nearly 25,000 people call the village home. The village of Rockville Centre provides its own power and water, giving residents these utilities for much lower rates than neighbors in surrounding areas. The village employs more than 200 people, operates its own police department and court system, runs its own Sanitation and Public Works departments, maintains its roads and buildings, and provides senior services and recreation for children. The mayor of Rockville Centre is Francis X. Murray. He works with the board of trustees to pass village laws and oversee the village. The deputy mayor is Kathleen Baxley, and the trustees are Michael Sepe, Edward Oppenheimer and Emilio Grillo. The board of trustees meets in Village Hall in public session on the first Monday of the month, except in August. Public briefing sessions are held the Thursday before the regular meeting. The court system is overseen by two elected justices: William Croutier and Kevin McDonough. The court meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. for arraignments, and every Thursday for conferences and trials. Continued on next page

Rockville Centre has many parks and trails for residents. There are basketball and tennis courts, football fields, baseball diamonds, soccer pitches and softball fields. The John A. Anderson Recreation Center also hosts programs for children throughout the year. There’s also the Rockville Links Club, a private country club, providing residents with a nearby golf course and pool for members. The majority of students living in Rockville Centre attend the Rockville Centre School District. The schools have been ranked among the best in the region and the nation for many years. The school district has five elementary schools, a middle school and an award-winning high school, all with world-class staff. Rockville Centre is also home to many well-regarded institutions. St. Agnes Cathedral and the Diocese of Rockville Centre call the village their home. Mercy Medical Center is within the village, and just next door is Molloy College, one of Long Island’s best institutes of higher learning. Rockville Centre has more than 500 businesses and about 100 restaurants. Last June, the village was honored for its ability to attract people to live, work and play. The accolade, titled “Sense of Place,” was given by nonprofit organization Vision Long Island at its 17th annual Smart Growth Awards, and recognized the village’s thriving downtown.

a look into the

Courtesy Rockville Centre Library Rockville Centre voters elected John Lyon as the first village president on Aug. 19, 1893. As the 19th century unfolded, one of the most important events in transforming the hamlet of Rockville Centre into the thriving village it is today occurred when Robert Pettit, in 1849, applied to the United States Post Office for permission to open a post office in his general store. Several names for this postal address were rejected in Washington, including Smithville, Smithtown, and Rockville, but the addition of “Centre” created what the Post Office agreed was a distinctive-sounding designation. Pettit had chosen the name to honor Mordecai “Rock” Smith, a Methodist preacher and community leader, whose father had operated DeMott's Mill. Smith was a blacksmith, a farmer, and the justice of the peace.

From its roots as a village for the Reckouackie Indians, to its settlement as Near Rockaway in the 17th century by Dutch and English pioneers, Rockville Centre grew and prospered. The arrival of the railroad in 1867 heralded the entry of Rockville Centre into the modern era. It was now possible to get into New York City faster and more frequently than had ever been possible by stagecoach or ship. The growth of the region, and the importance of Rockville Centre to the area's economy, is also highlighted by the founding, in February 1891, of the Bank of Rockville Centre, the first commercial bank operated on the South Shore. The bank occupied the corner of Merrick Road and North Village Avenue, and by 1929, Rockville Centre had earned a reputation as a leading financial center for the Island. Rockville Centre’s volunteer fire company was founded in 1875, and a public library, which opened in 1882. South Side High School, the first school of its kind on Long Island’s South Shore, also opened in 1892 on the property that is now Village Hall. A year later, the residents took the momentous step of approving incorpora- Continued on next page

tion during an election at Antheneum Hall on July 15, 1893. There were 219 votes — 139 in favor of incorporation, 79 against and one blank. Many deemed independence from the Town of Hempstead and Queens County — Nassau County was formed in 1899 after the division of Queens County — necessary to provide proper electric, water, street and safety services that the South Side Observer wrote “can only be supplied by village government.” In the first village election that August, voters selected attorney John Lyon as its president, along with trustees, a treasurer and a tax collector. The title of president for the village's chief elected official was changed to mayor in 1925, during the tenure of Charles Richmond. The advent of residential development in the early 1920s resulted in the creation of a Building Department, and sewers were installed later that decade. In 1926, the village installed traffic lights, and by 1928, the Police Department was completely motorized. By its 40th anniversary in 1933, the village had six fire companies and 33 police officers. The diversity in the style and the beauty of architecture at that time earned Rockville Centre the name "The Village of Homes." The growth of suburbia following the Second World War brought growth to Rockville Centre, too, and by the mid-1950s, village residents could boast of a year-round recreation facility. The success of this municipal service led to the building of the John A. Anderson Recreation Center in 1962 and the extension of services to the Mar-

Village goes green St. Patrick’s Parade celebrates Irish heritage By Matthew D’Onofrio

W

hen it comes to celebrating Irish heritage, perhaps no village on Long Island does it better than Rockville Centre, as seen through its annual St. Patrick’s Parade. Dubbed “the parade that cares and shares,” the event has brought out South Shore residents since 1977. In 2018, thousands of people decked out in green lined the sidewalks of Maple Avenue for the 22nd annual parade. More than 15,000 onlookers cheered on the 140 groups and 2,500 marchers participating in the occasion, which was led by Grand Marshal John F. Coghlan. And it’s not just about celebrating Irish heritage. The parade also makes contributions to the community. Since its inception, more than $1 million has been distributed to 58 local, national and Irish charities. The charities that benefitted this year included the Life’s WORC Family

he Rockville Centre School District is one of the best in the state, with widely recognized and honored faculty, administrators and educational programs. South Side High School has previously been named one of the best schools in the country by Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report and many other rating groups. Dr. William Johnson has been the superintendent of the district for decades. He has helped create programs at the schools that are celebrated around the country, and that help students achieve their best. All students at the high school take International Baccalaureate courses in English and history, which challenge them and help them learn critical-thinking skills. Many other students go on to take even more IB classes and graduate with an International Baccalaureate Diploma. Nearly all of South Side students graduate, and many go on to four-year colleges. Rockville Centre is also home to St. Agnes Cathedral School, one of the largest Catholic elementary schools on Long Island. Hundreds of Rockville Centre students attend St. Agnes in kindergarten through eighth grade, and then go on to Chaminade or Kellenberg high schools.

ongs are sung, sports are played, and spirits are high at South Side High School’s annual Red and Blue competition, which is still going strong after 102 years. Rockville Centre’s Red and Blue goes way back to its humble beginnings in 1916, a time when girls were not allowed to participate in high school team sports. The long-running tradition was changed up a bit after females were allowed equal access, but still features mostly female students. Last March, the Blue Team trumped the Red Team in a 4940 victory; the perfect avenge after losing last year. The captains for Blue were Katie Rosshirt and Zoe Roman; Red was lead by Elizabeth Preldakaj and Olivia Watterson.

Blue’s theme this time around was “Legally BLUE,” modeled after the film “Legally Blonde;” while Red’s was “The HollyRED Dream,” which told the story of two actresses trying to make it in Hollywood. Both teams stuck to the same message: fair treatment of women. And while Blue did out-jazz Red artistically, both teams showed true grit when it came to the physical challenges over the weekend. “Red and Blue is a great thing for the school,” said former director Meaghan Healy, who oversaw the annual event for 20 years. “It’s not about who wins or loses. It’s about the journeys they go on with their teammates and friends.”

hroughout the year, the Village of Rockville Centre offers plenty of opportunities for families to come together and have fun. There are events all year round throughout the village that highlight the reasons that it’s truly great: the community, the restaurants, the businesses and the individuals. In February, the Rockville Centre Community Fund hosts its biggest fundraiser of the year, a night at Margaritaville. The evening features food, fun and live music. The fund was created in 1987 by former mayor Eugene Murray. It gives money and aid to Rockville Centre residents in their time of need. Spring is a busy (and fun) time of year in the village. Things kick off with South Side High School’s annual Red and Blue competition. Get ready to see folks in Rockville Centre take sides, as signs spring up on houses and lawns and high school girls get ready for one of the biggest events of the year. Going strong for more than 100 years, Red and Blue is a color war that also fosters leadership, teamwork and school spirit. As soon as the red and blue colors go away, the green comes out. March is also when the village hosts the annual Rockville Centre St. Patrick’s Parade. The “parade that cares and shares” has been a staple in the community for nearly 30 years, and is also a fundraiser. Each year, the parade picks one local, one national and one Irish charity to support. More than $1 million has been donated to dozens of charities since the parade’s inception. One of the most amazing events around comes to Rockville Centre in May. It’s when South Side High School hosts Centre Stage, a musical production put on through an inclusive theater program that comprises both general education and special education actors. Dubbed by some as “the heartbeat of South Side High School, the group last May celebrated 10 years of productions, which over the years have drawn thousands to South Side’s auditorium. At the end of May, the village pays respect to its fallen heroes with the annual Memorial Day parade. The event commemorates all those who

This past parade featured the unveiling of a new monument honoring Rockville Centre service members who lost their lives in World War I. In July, the village celebrates its anniversary with an annual fireworks show, held this year at Mill River Park. What began as a celebration of the village’s centennial has become an annual event, with thousands of people showing up to watch the South Shore Symphony perform before being dazzled by an amazing fireworks display. This year, the village celebrated 125 years since becoming incorporated in 1893. The fall kicks off with the Chamber of Commerce’s Food and Wine Festival. People from across Long Island come to Rockville Centre to sample menu items from the local restaurants and try wines and beers from local manufacturers and brewers. Normally in June, the 2018 EAT. SHOP.ROCK. street festival, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce, was slated for September. The fair exclusively features Rockville Centre businesses and performers, and is a fantastic time for everyone to see what the community has to offer. In October, South Side High School gets the community together for Homecoming. The football team and the cheerleaders parade through the streets, joined by representatives from each of the school’s four classes and their themed floats. After the parade, the Cyclones take on one of their rival teams. As the weather gets cooler, people flock to the village’s annual 5k/10k/Family Fun Run in November. Thousands of people come out to run the route that winds through the village’s streets. Things close out in December with the village’s annual tree lighting at the Village Green. Holiday songs and hot chocolate are available for everyone before one fortunate village resident gets to flip the switch and light up the big tree at the park. So mark your calendars early. Because no matter the time of year, there’s something fun going on in Rockville Centre.

or nearly 17 years, St. Baldrick’s has been an integral part of the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Rockville Centre. People from the village and beyond participate by shaving their heads, chopping their ponytails, or simply donating to the cause. St. Baldrick’s is an organization dedicated to funding childhood cancer research. Its mission is to find cures for childhood cancers by providing kids with access to the very latest in research and clinical trials. As a result, they have since become the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants. In 2018, the Rockville Centre organization raised $439,707 for the cause, which surpassed its goal of $400,000, and broke the previous year’s earnings by roughly $36,000. About one in 285 children in the U.S. will have cancer before they turn 20, and worldwide, a child is diagnosed every two minutes, according to St. Baldrick’s website. Since the national St. Baldrick’s Foundation was founded in 1999, it has funded more than $260 million in research. The Rockville Centre St. Baldrick’s event takes place every year during the Rockville Centre’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which in 2019 will take place on March 23.

Fresh, sweet and savory treats in the summer heat RVC’s Farmers Market is a long-standing tradition By Matthew D’Onofrio

T

here is perhaps no better place to find fresh fruits and vegetables, delicious jams and jellies or tangy meats and seafood than at the Rockville Centre Farmers Market. Each summer, vendors from across Long Island gather in Railroad Parking Lot 12 at Long Beach Road and Sunrise Highway to sell food and other products that are locally grown, raised or made. The annual market, organized by the Long Island Growers Market, has gone on for about 25 years and is one of the busiest marketplaces on the Island. “We only sell what we make, bake, grow or catch,” coordinator Ethel Terry said. “The customers know everything is prepared fresh for them…because people want to know where their product is coming from.” If you are looking for fruits and veggies, try Fred Terry Farms or Orchards of Conklin, which also offers baked goods, cider and peanut butter. Shoppers can find more bread and pastries at the Bearded Baker or Orwashers Baked Goods, and Polka Dot Pound Cake offers sweeter options. Frozen Sin Truck makes homemade ice cream and doughnuts, and people can buy jams and jellies at Pecks of Maine. Are you thirsty? Hit up the 6 Juice Company, or New York Gourmet Coffee, For hungrier customers, Giannis makes homemade chicken burgers; Papa Pasquale whips up famous raviolis; Merken Fisheries provides seafood straight from the water; and Jessie’s Empanadas has plenty of its title dish. There is also yogurt and cheese at Coach Farms, and be sure to check out Marshall Creek Spices. You also may regret missing out on the pickles at Horman’s Best Pickles or Norman’s Pickle Company. Other products include soaps at Clean Essence, olive oils at Arlotta Food Studio and cookie butters at Coach Farms. The market runs every Sunday from 7 a.m. to noon through Nov. 18. For more information, visit www.longislandgrowersmarket.com.

ark Avenue is set to transform into a party zone on Sept. 30, 2018 as dozens of local businesses will set up shop on the street to attract residents and visitors looking for tasty cuisine, shopping and live performances. The event was originally scheduled for June 2, but was canceled because of bad weather. The fifth annual Eat Shop Rock street festival, presented by the Chamber of Commerce, will take place that Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. between Sunrise Highway and Lincoln Avenue, and will feature about 60 vendors, all of which are Rockville Centre businesses. “We want to support shopping local,” said Chamber President Christopher Acheson. In addition to shopping and food — including outdoor seating — provided by the local establishments, there will be two stages, which will feature live music and dance performances. The Sunrise Stage will be managed and sponsored by Rockville Centre’s School of Rock, and will include performances by local musicians Brian Ripps and Justin Howard. Dancers from Ms. Colleen’s Elite Dancentre will occupy the other stage throughout the day. Many of the restaurants will have live music separate from the stage acts, Acheson noted. A free Kids’ Zone will feature bouncy houses, and those of all ages can enjoy face painting, bowling and more. The chamber also sells raffles, which helps support local students. This year, the chamber gave three $1,000 scholarships to seniors graduating from South Side High School, as well as a $1,500 scholarship to a Molloy College student. Lenox and Park, Press 195 and The Tavern by George Martin are all excellent choices for traditional American grub. The meat lovers should mosey down to Chadwicks, Frank’s Steaks or GM Burger Bar, or Copper Pot Chicken Company, if red meat isn’t your thing. Last but not least, travel south of the border at get your Mexican cuisine on at Cabo or Salsa Mexicana. You won’t be disappointed — in any of these selections!

ROCKVILLE CENTRE GUIDE

Greetings from the

Chamber of CommerCe

T

his year marks the 112th anniversary of the Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce. Our mission over those years has always been to connect commerce with the community, and in 2018, we've gotten off to a tremendous start. Our Executive Board has been working tirelessly as we rolled out so many new programs and events. In March, many of the residents and their kids particiChristopher Acheson pated in our “Find the Pot of Gold” program. Children and their parents visited many of the shops in town looking for hidden shamrocks. When found, the children received gifts from the storeowners and were entered to win gift certificates from any of the favorite stores in town. Later on, in December, the chamber organizes a Snowman Hunt. Just moved to the village? Our new homeowner program through Daniel Gale and Coach has been extremely successful. Both real estate firms deliver welcome bags to new Rockville Centre homeowners filled with gift certificates and marketing pieces from our members. On Sept. 30, 2018, the chamber hosts its fifth Eat.Shop. Rock, our annual street festival. We consciously limit business

BUYING ESTATES & COLLECTIONS

participation to merchants who call Rockville Centre home, ensuring that we focus on shopping local. This event gets larger and larger each year, and we hope to see you stop by. The chamber is also committed to giving back to the community. Through the membership dues, raffles and sponsorship funds we have been able to provide: • Three $1,000 scholarships to South Side High School seniors who expressed an interest in learning about business while they attend college in the fall. We also awarded a $1,500 scholarship to a local resident who is attending Molloy College. • The 100 beautiful flower baskets hung from the village lamp posts. • Free parking on Saturdays in December. • Donations to the Lions Club, St. Patrick’s Parade and the RVC Community Fund. I would like to thank our residents for continuing to shop local. The Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce, together with Mayor Francis X. Murray, Deputy Mayor Kathy Baxley and the entire village team, are poised to help our community thrive in 2018 and beyond. To stay up to date with what’s happening with the chamber, please visit our monthly “Around the Centre” page found in the Rockville Centre Herald.
