A LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHERS
W
e are proud to present our annual Rockville Centre Guide, a special supplement to the Rockville Centre Herald.
Those of us who live here know that Rockville Centre is a wonderful place. In this little book, you’ll find many of the organizations and institutions that make it so very special. The purpose of the Guide is to expand upon what the Herald does each week: describe and celebrate this unique community and its many services and organizations. For newcomers, the Guide provides a comprehensive look at all the community has to offer. Longtime residents and business leaders will also find it a handy reference. We hope you enjoy this year’s Guide. We’ve tried to make it the best guide Rockville Centre ever published. We also hope you enjoy reading the Rockville Centre Herald 52 weeks a year. And no matter how far from home you find yourself, you can read an online version of the Herald at www.LIHerald.com. At our website, you can access the latest stories and special coverage of breaking news including election results. Clifford Richner Publisher

Families flocked to Hempstead Lake State Park for some weekend sledding after a February snow storm. The history of Rockville Centre began on the banks of Mill River in the 1700s, where the first settlers in the area built their homes and their mills. In 1776, a fight broke out between a group of hidden Tories and rebels in a swamp near Anthony DeMott’s mill. It was in this fight that the first blood was spilled on Long Island during the American Revolution. In the 1800s, Mordecai Rock Smith had taken over operation of the mill and pond that DeMott had owned. He renamed them Smith Mill and Smith Pond. Smith became a Reverend at the local Sand Hole Methodist Church and a pillar of the community. In 1848, Robert Pettit opened a general store in his home on Merrick Road. He applied to the federal government for permission to open a post office. Pettit wanted to honor Smith by naming the town after him, but the names Smithville, Smithburg, Smithfield and Smithtown were already in use. Even Rockville was taken, until Pettit added Centre to the name, creating the community of Rockville Centre. The hamlet of Rockville Centre continued to grow. On July 15, 1893, a vote was held to determine whether or not Rockville Centre should incorporate and become a village. The motion passed, 139 to 79. On Aug. 19 of that year, the first village elections were held. Today, Rockville Centre is an even more vibrant community. According to the 2010 Census, the village has a population of 24,023, more than half of whom are women. There are Continued on page 12

6,221 family households in the village with an average family size of 3.24. The Village of Rockville Centre provides its own power and water, giving residents these utilities for much lower rates than neighbors in surrounding areas. The village employs more than 200 people, operates its own police department and court system, runs its own Sanitation and Public Works departments, maintains its roads and buildings and provides senior services and recreation for children. The Mayor of the Village of Rockville Centre is currently Francis X. Murray. He works with the Board of Trustees to pass village law and oversee the village. The Board of Trustees is Nancy Howard, Michael Sepe, Edward Oppenheimer and Emilio Grillo. The Board of Trustees meets in Village Hall in public session on the first and third Mondays of the month, except in August. Public briefing sessions are held either the Thursday before or an hour before the regular meeting. The court system is overseen by two elected justices: William Croutier and Kevin McDonough. The court meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. for arraignments, and every Thursday for conferences and trials. Rockville Centre has a multitude of parks and trails available for residents. There are basketball and tennis courts, football fields, baseball diamonds, soccer pitches and softball fields. The John A. Anderson Recreation Center also hosts programs for children throughout the year. There’s also the Rockville Links Club, providing residents with a nearby golf course and country club.

The majority of students living in Rockville Centre attend the Rockville Centre School District. The schools have been ranked among the best in the region and the nation for many years. The school district has five elementary schools, a middle school and an award-winning high school, all with world-class staff. Rockville Centre is also home to many well-regarded institutions. St. Agnes Cathedral and the Diocese of Rockville Centre call the village their home. Mercy Medical Center is located within the village. And just next door is Molloy College, one of Long Island’s best institutes of higher learning.

VILLAGE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE As an incorporated village, the government of Rockville Centre handles many of the responsibilities usually left to the county and state in other areas. The village, which employs about 215 people, operates a police department and a court system, maintains its own electric, water, public works, sanitation, building and parks and recreation departments and has community development and senior services agencies. It contracts with a volunteer department for fire protection. The mayor of Rockville Centre is Francis X. Murray, who was elected in 2011 to a four-year term. Deputy Mayor Nancy Howard was also elected to a four-year trustee term in 2011, as was Trustee Michael Sepe. Ed Oppenheimer and Emilio Grillo were elected to their four-year terms in June 2013. GREETINGS FROM THE MAYOR
Our schools, recreation programs for our youth and seniors, safety, downtown area and overall quality of life is second to none. I am proud to be your Mayor and committed to keeping our village affordable and delivering the great services our residents have come to expect. Like every government, we have been challenged by increasing healthcare costs and retirement benefits for our workers. However, we have risen to the challenge by streamlining the way we do business and winning major grants and gifts to benefit the village. In the last two years alone, I have secured nearly $5 million dollars in federal, state and local grants and gifts to make improvements in our village. Much of this money has been used to improve our ball fields and parks, provide transportation and assistance for seniors, equipment to repair our roadways, provide sophisticated tools for our police and fire department and much more. As your mayor, I have also looked for ways to negotiate public-private partnerships to save money while making improvement. Most recently, we saved money by sharing services
with Molloy College to further improve our athletic facilities at the Skelos Sports Complex. The college has funded lights and other improvements to the Bob Klein Softball Field, giving the college an NCAA-regulation softball field. At the same time, it provides the village and Francis X. Murray school district with the cost-free use of a state-of-the-art stadium. For this effort, the village was just presented first place in the category of Public Works for Local Government Achievement Award from the New York State Conference of Mayors. Finally, the downtown business district is key to our village’s future. Unlike other communities where Main Street is littered with vacant stores and “For Rent” signs, Rockville Centre enjoys a thriving downtown, with new businesses coming in every week. We have an occupancy rate in our downtown area of more than 95 percent, and more shops and restaurant are coming. I was born and raised in Rockville Centre, as was my father, who was mayor for 20 years. The Murray family has a deep love for Rockville Centre, and I am committed to preserving our terrific way of life. FRANCIS X MURRAY Mayor, Village of Rockville Centre

POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENTS POLICE DEPARTMENT The Rockville Centre Police Department has authorization for 52 sworn officers and a support staff of 42 civilians, including dispatchers, neighborhood aides and crossing guards. The department is assisted by an 18-member auxiliary force that logs in more than 2,800 hours a year of voluntary service ranging from special events such as the St. Patrick’s parade to Friday and Saturday night youth patrols. Rockville Centre is one of only nine agencies in the region accredited by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, maintaining full compliance with 136 training standards. The department supports a rigorous, professional training program,
logging more than 800 hours in areas such as emergency vehicle operations, field sobriety testing, hazardous materials handling, firearms, use of force, active shooter response, narcotics enforcement and gang intelligence. All members are compliant with federal standards of the National Incident Management System, which is required by the Office of Domestic Preparedness in the Department of Homeland Security. Its top four executive officers have all completed the prestigious and demanding 10-week advanced investigative and management training courses at the FBI’s National Academy at Quantico, Va. Rockville Centre was the first village in
Nassau County to start a Police Explorer program. Affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America, the program is open to 14- to 19-year-old males and females who wish to explore a possible law enforcement career. Members experience close order drill, police communications, handling a domestic incident and all around police work and have the option of competing in a nationally-sponsored annual competition. The Police Department offers programs in bus and bicycle safety for youngsters; burglary prevention, security surveys, and a Neighborhood Watch program for homeowners; as well as travel and specialized crime prevention for seniors.

For helping save four residents from a 2012 house fire, Rockville Centre fire fighters, above with village officials, were presented with medals.
FIRE DEPARTMENT The Rockville Centre Fire Department has more than 330 members and is the largest of its kind in New York state. The members are all volunteers, local residents who join one of seven separate fire companies located in the department’s five firehouses. The department is led by Chief John Thorpe III, First Assistant Chief Robert Seaman, and Second Assistant Chief Brian Cook. The members of the department meet several times weekly to train, drill, and to ready their apparatus and equipment for alarms. Training is held on both the company and department levels, and is coordinated by the department’s Board of Instruction. Over 500 manpower hours are expended by these volunteers each week in preparation and readiness alone.
The Bureau of Fire Prevention works year-round conducting inspections of commercial establishments throughout the Village to ensure compliance with village, county and state fire codes. The bureau also provides speakers and presentations for numerous groups including elementary and middle school students and senior citizens. The Fire Police Squad, comprised of members from all seven fire companies who volunteer for this extra assignment, assists the Rockville Centre Police Department by directing traffic at auto accidents and fire alarms, thus freeing officers to perform other law enforcement functions. The Fire Police also assist with crowd control and traffic direction at large village functions such as the annual
fireworks display and 10k, 5k and Family Fun run. The department operates 22 pieces of equipment including three chief’s cars, an aerial ladder truck, a tower ladder truck, five engines, an antique engine, a heavy rescue truck, two ambulances, an EMS first response vehicle, a fire-police response vehicle, a fire inspection vehicle, a utility truck, a passenger van, an inflatable rescue boat and two EMS mountain bikes for use at crowded village functions and events. Residents who wish to join the Rockville Centre Fire Department are urged to stop by any of the five firehouses on a Sunday morning, or may call (516) 678-9320, for information on becoming a member.

T
he Rockville Centre school district was founded on Dec. 22, 1871 when the Commissioner of Education divided District No. 11 (Oceanside) and created District No. 21 for Rockville Centre. The first Board of Education was elected the following month and on Jan. 5, 1883 the Union Free School District #21, Town of Hempstead, was formally organized. The first school building was on what is now known as Quealy Place. It opened in 1876 and held 54 students. The high school in Rockville Centre was the first in Nassau County. Because it was also the first high school on the south shore of Long Island in either Nassau or Queens, it was named “South Side,” a name that has lasted more than a century. Faced with crowding, the community charged the Board of Education with expanding the educational facilities in 1890. The board bought property on Quealy, between Park and Clinton avenues and opened a new school on Feb. 20, 1892 with a faculty of five and 317 pupils. The graduating class that year had three students. Today this building is The Eugene J. Murray municipal building, known as Village Hall. In 1919, overcrowding was once again a problem and the board bought a 4 1/2 acre property on Hillside Avenue. Completed in 1924, the building housed both the Junior and Senior High Schools. The first class graduated from the new South Side High School in June 1924 after spending a month there. The first graduates to spend a full year in the school — the class of 1925 — were responsible for the first yearbook, The Tower. Seven years later, during the

Lauren Baez played the overbearing mother Rose in the high school production of “Gypsy” last year. She counseled her daughter Baby June, played by Melissa Aliott, how to be a proper star. 1932-33 school year, a school newspaper was founded and titled: “The Sportsman.” Its publication has been continuous ever since. After World War II, the most recent South Side High School was proposed. In 1950 the community approved funding for the new building and Allen Field and the village disposal plant were purchased. In September 1955, the new South Side High School opened for grades 10 through 12. The new building had taken two years to build and featured a capacity of 1,000 students and an auditorium that could hold 805 people. The yearbook changed its name to The Colonnade in honor of the new structure. In 1982 an expansion of the high school was completed and the 9th grade was moved from the Hillside Avenue School to South Side High School. The high school became a four-year facility
and the Hillside Avenue School went from being a junior high (grades 7 - 9) to a middle school (grades 6 - 8). Once more, overcrowding forced the district to look for ways to expand. The public approved the purchase of property on Maple Avenue, and the district moved its vehicle maintenance department off the South Side campus, creating classroom space. Today, there are more than 3,500 students in the seven schools within the Rockville Centre school district. South Side High School has achieved distinction by being ranked as one of the 100 best high schools in the nation by both Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report. The Board of Education consists of President Liz Dion, Vice President Mark Masin, Secretary Gregg Spaulding and trustees John O'Shea and Mayda Kramer.

A private Long Island college, Molloy provides a valuecentered, multidimensional liberal arts education with more than 50 quality academic programs grounded in the Catholic faith, ideals of truth, and respect for the dignity and worth of every individual. Our faculty is accomplished, yet approachable, leading small classes where students are encouraged to think critically and explore creatively. Combining the strengths of academic excellence and leadership with personal, compassionate mentoring, we bring out the best in every student while delivering the best value for their tuition dollar. Nationally ranked, yet conveniently located in Rockville Centre - Molloy is one of the most affordable private colleges on Long Island. Many consider Molloy an “optimally sized school”: at approximately 4,200 undergraduate and graduate students, Molloy is large enough to offer students an academically-challenging, quality educational experience yet small enough to provide the personal attention that enhances every student’s intellectual, ethical, spiritual and social development. In fall of 2011 Molloy opened the Madison Theatre at Molloy College. The theater’s mission is to create a versatile, first-class facility that will offer a diverse range of world-class entertainment for the South Shore and greater Long Island region. Situated only 30 minutes from Manhattan, the theater strives to be an incubator for creative development for the artistic community while educating and inspiring young performers, writers, and technicians for careers within the entertainment industry. The Madison Theatre shares in Molloy College’s belief that artistic expression and appreciation is an important part of the development of the full person. The 550-seat state-of-the-art theatre has hosted a variety of world-class performers from the world of theatre, music, dance, cabaret, comedy and more. Performers who have graced the Madison Theatre stage have included: Comedian Martin Short, Jazz great John Pizzarelli, ETHEL, violinist Ittai Shapira and rock legend Joan Jett. TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of approximately 760,000 people. Within the Town there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Under the current system, the Town of Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Kate Murray — and a six-member Town Council. The six members of the council are elected from one of six councilmatic districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have a four-year term of office. The supervisor serves as the chief executive officer of town government. She presides over all town board meetings, directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments, employing just more than 2,100 people. As the chief financial officer of the township, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. We need your participation to do our job, so we offer you — our readers and partners — a reminder of how and when to reach us. To tell us what’s going on in your community, or news of upcoming events sponsored by civic, service, religious or community organizations, the deadline is 10 a.m. the Friday prior to publication. Notices are printed free of charge, but must be typed and double-spaced. We also welcome the news of your family life, your business life and your social life. We accept, at no charge, obituaries and Neighbors in the News items, including awards, honors, births, graduations, marriages and promotions. We value your opinions, and provide a forum for them in our popular Letters to the Editor space. Letters are accepted until 5 p.m. the Friday prior to publication.
