Urban art
The Museum of Urban Arts is bringing street art, murals and community-centered creativity to visitors in Long Island City.
At 45-25 Davis St., the museum showcases artwork throughout 5PointzLIC, a 50-story residential tower built on the former 5 Pointz site, once known as a landmark destination for graffiti and street artists. Several large-scale murals can be viewed on the building's exterior, including some visible from passing 7 trains.
Inside, visitors can explore a gallery space and four stairwells adorned with artwork ranging from colorful animal portraits to surreal cityscapes. The museum also offers selfguided tours of the building and a nearby art-filled park, as well as guided walking tours by reservation.
Museum founder Stephanie Sulaiman, a Queens native and graduate of P.S. 151, J.H.S. 10 and William Cullen Bryant High School, said she hopes to add QR codes to the artwork

Across Queens there are World Cup watch parties setup for soccer fans to see the global
that will link visitors to videos telling each artist's story.
The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The partnership brings a new collection of ironon patches and designs to American shoppers for the first time.
"We're thrilled to celebrate this opening weekend with the Flushing community and offi -
cially introduce MUJI to Queens," MUJI USA President Richard Rappaport said in a statement. "We want to be embedded in the energy and culture that make Tangram and Flushing so special.”

United Choral Society’s annual spring concert
The United Choral Society performed its annual spring concert on June 7 at the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library, continuing a tradition that has made the volunteer ensemble a cultural mainstay in the Five Towns for more than 85 years.
Under the direction of conductor Sharon Pesenti, the perfor -
mance was held in Gold Hall, where the group has staged community concerts for more than 20 years. The program reflected the chorus’s wide-ranging repertoire, blending classical works with selections designed to resonate across generations.
Audiences listened to a musical journey spanning centuries, from baroque choral
repertoire to a dramatic medley from “Les Misérables”, channeling the emotional intensity of the iconic production. The concert also featured a patriotic salute in honor of the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebrating American history through music.

What’s involved in a net-zero home?
Q. We’re looking for a home — first-time buyers — and are interested in something we can make into a net-zero residence. Is it possible, and what are the things we’ll need to consider? Net zero is our hope, but we know we may have to settle. Some things may be way out of our price range.
A. Net zero for a home means producing as much energy as it consumes, bringing a utility balance to no expense. It’s possible, and the first thing you should look for is the orientation of the building and the location relative to problems. For example, a home near saltwater won’t allow for a well pump that will save hundreds on irrigation, and the home would need to be higher off the ground to avoid flooding, leaving greater surface exposure to cold.

You want to find a home where the back faces south and, if there’s a garage, it’s at the northeast corner, to act as a wind block. A home whose back faces south brings more daylight to kitchens, dining and recreation rooms, which are used more during the day and oriented to the backyard. Trees make a difference, too, because they provide a wind block, to reduce the time you run the boiler in the winter, as well as shade, reducing the heat on the home in summer and reducing air conditioning demand.
Make sure the property has drainage away from the home, and that shrubs are kept slightly away from the exterior walls. Where there’s more moisture, there’s more need for running a dehumidifier, which erases utility cost savings. Thermal operable window shades are helpful, but remember to open the blinds for daylight. The more sun-lit the rooms are, the lower the electric bill for lighting. And the better the windows (newer and more energy-efficient), the less heat and cool will be lost.

Look at the attic to see if insulation is uniform and thick. If you really want to save energy and dramatically reduce costs, consider re-insulating with closed-cell foam. It’s costly to install, but will pay you back in two to three years and for the rest of the time you’re in the home. Open-cell foam is less costly but also less insulating. Foam insulation is also a great sound reducer if you’re looking near a busy roadway or airport. You can also generate power and reduce utility bills substantially with solar panels, but understand that the time period to pay back is several years, often seven to 10.
What’s great is that these upgrades pay for themselves. Not many products can do that. Installing new roofing before putting up solar panels is highly recommended and, if you manage another expensive upgrade, consider a standing seam metal roof. Less-sightly solar panels can be placed on the south (rear) roof, attached to the standing fins of each roof section, and there will be no roof penetration. Going net zero saves energy and money. Good luck!
