W3AM shows in April, Egg Hunt Saturday

Here’s an act that has been described as an “evening in a lighthouse, listening to a strange radio station, warming your feet by the fire.”

3AM Theatre will ho st the W3AM Variety Show 12 times through to April 29.

The talent includes circus artists from around the world, dance by the most exciting choreographers in the city, live electronic music, and readings of mind-bending original stories.

Three avant-garde artists — Kyle Driggs, Book Kennison, and Logan Kerr — created the W3AM Variety Show. They’re also the producers and performers.

Driggs, who also handles the lighting design, specializes in a fusion of juggling, object manipulation, movement, and theatrical persona. Kennison uses juggling, movement, sound, and text, combining his talents into spellbinding, seemingly effortless work.

Kerr specializes in tight wire dance. She began her career with The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus in Brooklyn, where she was introduced to the fusion of traditional and contemporary circus with underground and DIY-variety arts. As a solo artist, Logan has toured with such companies as Circus Bella and Cirque Us.

Kennison and Kerr are also accomplished musicians who have recorded three albums, including the soundtrack for the feature-length film “Easy Bake.”

The W3AM Variety Show schedule: April 4 at 7:30 p.m.; April 7 at 7:30 p.m.; April 11 at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.; April 15 at 7:30 p.m.; April 18 at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.; April 22 at 7:30 p.m.; April 25 at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.; and April 29 at 7:30 p.m.

Founded about three years ago and located at 9-20 35th Ave., Unit 3N, in Astoria, 3AM is a multidisciplinary performance company that blends contemporary circus, modern dance, and physical theatre with kinetic sculpture and innovative lighting design to create original works that encompass visual art and live performance in a unique setting.

Barnyard Egg Hunt

The second of two Queens County Farm Museum Barnyard Egg Hunts takes place on Saturdays, April 4.

Starting at 10:15 a.m., the sessions take place every 30 minutes. Youngsters and their grown-up friends search for colorful, prize-filled eggs in the orchard. At other times, they can pose for photos with Whiskers the Bunny (a cagey and photogenic veteran of these festi -

vals), take hayrides, and participate in outdoor games. Some tiny baby quails just hatched. They’ll be at the farm store directly to the right of the main entrance.

General admission is $17, but children under 2 can attend for free. Attendees can purchase food from trucks and the on-site shop.

Egg hunts derive from pagan practices in Medieval Europe that basically melded with Easter, which is a Christian holiday. In German folklore, the goddess Eostre and her rabbits laid eggs to mark the beginning of spring.

Egg hunts came to he United States in the 18th century, thanks to German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania.

Students celebrate Purim

Learning about meteorology

Lawrence Primary School students got a hands-on lesson in meteorology during a visit from Sam’s Weather School, which turned the school auditorium into an interactive science lab.

Led by meteorologist Sam Augeri, the program introduced students to the fundamentals of weather through demonstrations and audience participation. Augeri, who has more than 20 years of experience in broadcast meteorology and is a former News 12 weather anchor, guided students through concepts such as cloud formation, wind patterns and how weather systems develop.

Students were encouraged to think like scientists as they observed experiments and learned how meteorologists track and predict changing conditions in the atmosphere.

The presentation is part of the school’s broader focus on hands-on STEM learning, Principal Kristen Panzarella said.

“Programs like Sam’s Weather School help students connect classroom lessons with real-world science while building the foundational knowledge needed to understand Earth’s complex climate systems,” Panzarella said.

The interactive assembly aimed to spark curiosity while reinforcing classroom instruction, giving students a deeper understanding of the natural forces that shape everyday weather.

By the end of the program, students returned to class with a stronger grasp of scientific concepts and a greater appreciation for the work of meteorologists, school officials said.

Frumie Ganz’s book series hits audio platforms

Cedarhurst resident and author Frumie Ganz is bringing her popular children’s book series to life in a new way, with recently released audiobook versions now available through public libraries, Audible, Apple Books, ECX and Kobo.

Ganz, known for her “My Blended Family” series, has expanded her work beyond the page by personally narrating and recording each audiobook, adding a new layer of connection for young readers and their families. The series, which focuses on the dynamics of blended families, aims to help children navigate change, relationships and identity in an accessible and relatable way.

“One of my sons, when he was younger, always used to tell me I have a great radio voice and that I could do cartoons or change my voice,” Ganz said. “After I did the books I started thinking to myself that it would be so amazing if my voice could match my books since I’m the person behind it.”

By voicing the stories herself, Ganz said she wanted to preserve the tone and emotional intent behind each character and moment. The decision to narrate the books on her own also allowed her to maintain creative control and ensure the stories were delivered as they were originally envisioned.

“It became a dream to get my voice behind the books so my children could hear it and it would last forever,” she said. “My grandchildren will also get to hear it and it’s just so nice to have that behind me.”

The audiobooks are now accessible across multiple platforms, including local public libraries, making them available to a wide audience at no cost to many listeners. Their

release reflects a growing demand for audio content, particularly among families looking for flexible and engaging ways to enjoy stories together.

“There are so many rules when you’re recording, there can’t be a drop of sound,” Ganz added. “Once I got the story

down after several tries I had the files cleaned so they were properly ready to be uploaded on ECX. It takes at least 10 days for them to review it and then they all uploaded.”

The move to audiobooks also broadens accessibility for children who may have difficulty reading or who prefer listening, as well as for busy families seeking screen-free entertainment options.

“I feel like I completed a process because it’s not just one way that a person can get the book,” she said. “Having my voice behind this means so much that I can tell my story.”

On March 15, Ganz held a storytime at the Peninsula Public Library where she read her first book “The Little Girl with the Big Dream” and gave out free copies to children in kindergarten to fifth grade.

“I appreciated the opportunity to share my story with the children in the community and look forward to reading my other books to them,” Ganz said.

Children’s librarian Henna Ross coordinated with Ganz on the event and said her goal was for children to learn about a new author from the community.

“I thought the kids would also learn reading comprehension from the event as well,” Ross said. “It’s always exciting for kids to meet an author and get to know the voice behind the books.”

Ross said Ganz also handed out coloring pages of the book’s illustrations and spent time with the children answering questions.

“I used to go to a lot of book singings when I was younger and I enjoy meeting authors and getting to know who’s behind the books I love,” she said.

Can we use a local architect for work

on a home in Boston?

Q. We own a home in Boston that needs a lot of work, and were wondering what to do about hiring an architect. We want to hire one who is familiar with the area, the codes and the building department, because we understand they are very strict there. We have a local friend who’s an architect, and he has gotten his “reciprocal” license in Massachusetts. How do you think we should handle this? Should we work with our friend, Zoom with a local architect or have them try to work together?

A. This is not an uncommon problem, but it’s all based on communication, as is most of what we deal with in our daily lives. It’s best to weigh the issues of how the communication will work, including the making of the plans, which are also the basis for your project and the most important communication tool.

Over the years I’ve seen where clients didn’t take the planning process seriously, thinking, and even saying, that they just want to get the permit to start the work. That approach generally leads to failure, with either the owner not getting what they want or causing problems along the way. For example, many people assume that the plans are a suggestion, a kind of open guide to the approximate outcome, and that they will just handle changes for what they really wanted during construction.

One recent client, who didn’t last very long, was in another city and, being in the medical field, said we could do Zoom meetings like they do in tele-health. Conversations fell apart immediately, because the building has major structural deterioration, and on my first walk-through, I had to order column supports to be installed immediately where collapse was imminent. The owner was told this, and that, at the very least, building plans would be absolutely necessary, detailing the exact remedy. But in order to prepare the structural plans, measuring of the building areas contributing loads and further investigation were necessary. The owner got very upset, because his contractor was ready to go and just needed to know what to do.

Having made medical appointments over the years to get one test in a particular hospital, and then shuttling to another site for another test, I realized this client just didn’t get it. His profession required all kinds of very specific testing, and his perception was that mine did not. Buildings are custom. They’re not kits. There are many ways that buildings, even homes, can fail, and we always want to prevent leaking, movement and subsequent damage, in addition to wanting to make the spaces function and be attractive. I would recommend working with your friend, and having him develop an agreement and relationship with the local professional who knows the area best, if possible. Otherwise I would work with the local professional, but arrange for in-person meetings. With issues and questions that happen during construction, you want a good team of people you can trust.
