A word of thanks to our volunteer firefighters There is a part of many of us, I believe, that wants, on one level or another, to be a volunteer firefighter.

Most people are good people. Most people want to protect their communities. Most people understand that one of the greatest threats to any community is fire. If a blaze were allowed to rage unconcott trolled, it could consume whole blocks or neighborhoods, as was the case in the 19th century, before the advent of highly organized fire companies.

Most of us want to help. We, however, haven’t the ability to fight fires. Volunteer firefighting requires an inordinate amount of time and a level of commitment that is so rare these days.

To say that our volunteer firefighters are heroes is an understatement. They give selflessly to a higher cause — protecting their neighbors’ homes, businesses and lives. You can only imagine your community without your department, or with a paid fire department, the taxes would be astronomical.

So we can only say thank you to the good men and women who fight our fires and come to the aid of people in all manner of catastrophes, from heroin overdoses to car

wrecks and hurricanes.

Several months in the making, the First on the Scene section is a project that is intended to express our sincere gratitude to Nassau County’s volunteer fire departments. Too often, our fire volunteers go unnoticed within our communities. With this section, we hope to change that. rinton It is, perhaps, little surprise that the ranks of volunteer firefighters have diminished over the past two decades. Many folks are working two and three jobs to make ends meet.

They haven’t the time to volunteer.

Nearly 20 years ago, I photographed a front-page investigative story for the Long Island section of The New York Times that looked at the dire need for more fire volunteers. I visited with firefighters from across the Island. The story was always one and the same: Firefighting ranks were becoming stretched thinner and thinner.

In speaking with a number of fire chiefs and firefighters for this Herald section, the story remains the same now: Our local fire departments desperately need recruits.

Often, people wonder why anyone would take on a responsibility as monumental as volunteer firefighting. I asked that question

of Louis Lanzilotta in 1997 for a Herald story about the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department. At the time, he was chief of the department, one of the oldest fire companies on the South Shore.

He said the answer was simple: old-fashioned good will. “You see how devastating it is when someone’s house in on fire,” he told me. “It’s a special feeling to know you helped that person.”

Indeed.

Beyond that, it’s important to note that fire companies offer a home to so many.

They are places of camaraderie, of brother and sisterhood, of community. For those

who are firefighters, they often say they could not imagine not volunteering.

Rockville Centre firefighting, a tradition since 1874

By William Stern The origins of the Rockville Centre Fire Department, like most fire departments, can be traced to a fire. The blaze broke out in the fall of 1874, 25 years after the community was dubbed “Rockville Centre.” The fire raged along Banks Avenue, adjacent to Smith Pond – which, fortunately for the young village, provided the water for the bucket brigade that eventually extinguished the blaze.

Local men of no particular expertise were tasked with the firefighting effort, because in those days fire departments were few and far in between. In fact, at that time, not a single fire department lay between Jamaica and Freeport on the South Shore.

As a result, it was common for any fire to wreak havoc and cause extensive damage.

It was less than a year later that the formation of Rockville Centre’s first fire company was discussed by a group of local men, later becoming the Eureka Hook, Ladder and Bucket Co. In 1890, the idea for a new, modernized fire company was proposed.

The fundraising commenced, and soon enough the newly created Live Oak Engine Company was able to purchase a No. 4 Button Hand fire engine, as well as other equipment.

The Button Fire Engine Company was the foremost producer of steam fire engines in the 19th century.

Finally, Rockville Centre would be protected from fire with state-of-the-art technology. At that time in the late 1800s, Rockville Centre had become a burgeoning commuter hub, demanding elevated protection for its property and people.

Operating as separate entities for a number of years, the Live Oak Engine Company and the Eureka Hook, Ladder and Bucket Company finally merged in 1893, coalescing into what is now known as the Rockville Centre Fire Department. This newly united department, a result of the village’s incorporation, elected its first chief, Benjamin Combes, of the Eureka Company. Combes’s name now leads those of the 125 chiefs in the department’s history.

As the 19th century came to a close, Rockville Centre’s firefighting community continued to grow.

Encouraged by the merger and the ever-increasing safety of the village, the Village Board called for yet another department to be commissioned, this time south of the railroad tracks. And so, the Defender Hose

Company No. 1 was born, soon followed by the Alert Hose Company No. 2 (renamed Engine Company No. 2) to secure the south side of the village.

The sudden proliferation of new fire departments in the village was bound to run into some red tape, and it did in the dead of summer, 1896. Issues regarding the firing and hiring of new firefighters arose as they related to a New York state law from 1880 and 1886. The 1880 decree contained language that failed to separate the fire department from a general police force, instead describing the department as a “force for extinguishing fires,” along with the 1886 law that further muddied the waters. The fire department was unable to properly categorize its non-firefighting personnel. As a result, village residents began to question whether the department had any legal right to exist. An article from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, titled “A Demoralized Fire Department,” reads, “Last night the trustees had the hose taken away from Defender Hose company No. 1. Three days ago Chief John R. Sprague ordered a drill of the department for last evening.

William H. Grim, foreman of Defender company, notified the secretary of the department that he did not recognize Sprague’s authority and his company would not turn out.” Over the next two months, the Village Board reconciled the state laws with their personnel, and the department avoided dissolution.

Throughout the 20th century, the Rockville Centre Fire Department grew alongside the village, continuing to provide protection from fires. When the unthinkable happened on Sept. 11, 2001, the Rockville Centre Fire Department members provided their unwavering support to their New York City counterparts. Over 60 of the department’s members responded to the scene on 9/11, and many stayed for weeks afterward during the rescue and recovery efforts. The department also sent two of its trucks to aid in the effort. A third truck was provided when a Queens firehouse found itself empty and unprepared to answer calls in its own district. The Rockville Centre Fire Department sent in Engine 443 to cover the calls while the Queens unit’s trucks were at ground zero.

Brian Cook, the current department chief, elected this April, has watched the department develop and evolve in his 29 years with it. Cook, a third-generation

firefighter, pointed out some of the harsh realities of the job. “There are more safety rules and regulations we have to abide by since I first joined the department 29 years ago,” he said, “many of these costing the department money we don’t have. There is also a lot more required training in order to become a firefighter and to stay a firefighter, so the members are putting in a lot more time away from families to get this training.

“But on a positive note,” he continued, “the equipment we use now is far better and safer than years past.”

In 2017, walking into one of the five fire stations, the deep roots of history remain palpable. Pictures line many of the walls and provide the backdrop for the modern-day department’s endeavors. The 125 chiefs have all left their own marks on the department, along with the thousands of members who have served under them. n

Danger in all directions for fire volunteers

Volunteer firefighters climb ladders that stretch two and three stories into the air, high-pressure hoses at the ready to spray down raging fires that burn hotter than a thousand degrees. Black smoke billows in all directions. At any moment, the home or building might explode or collapse.

Meanwhile, others rush inside in search of victims who might be trapped. It’s an inferno, with flames raging in all directions.

Sight is limited. The structure groans. Weakened wooden floors might give in. Walls and ceilings might come crashing down.

Yes, volunteer firefighting is very, very dangerous, and the financial reward is, well, non-existent, except for a small pension later in life. Long Island’s firefighters are largely volunteers. They give of their time and of themselves, they say, out of an old-fashioned sense of community and a desire to aid those in need.

Long-time Herald photographer Bill Kelly has spent years capturing volunteer firefighters at work as they extinguish blazes of all sorts. Herein are a handful of his hundreds of images of Rockville Centre fire volunteers.

The SPECTRA series, produced by FRC, lets you choose the lamphead that’s right for each vehicle. Available to be mounted on telescopic poles, fixed and side mounted, on tripods, recessed or surface mounted, brow mounted (on the front cab), and even under your aerial.

By Scott Brinton Once upon a time, in the early 20th century, firehouses were simple, wood-frame structures, with a handful of garage bays to store horse- or humanpowered engines with giant wheels and oversized tanks that, frankly, would run out of water fairly quickly in a big blaze.

As the 20th century progressed, so did the fire trucks, becoming motorized. As time went on, small trucks became massive engines that required everlarger garage bays.

Fast-forward to the 21st century. Today’s firehouses are very large structures — often the largest in their communities. They’ve also gone high-tech, and rarely is there a single firehouse for an entire community. Often there are two or three — or more.

On this page are four of the firehouses scattered across Rockville Centre.

Town offers alarm safety tips Editor’s note: The following safety tips were provided by the Town of Hempstead as a public-service announcement.

Smoke detectors are considered the most effective fire-warning device, and should be placed on every level of a home. When properly installed, smoke alarms reduce fire-related deaths and injuries. Because smoke rapidly spreads during a house fire, the alarms provide a warning, giving occupants more time to escape from the home.

Be sure to: Install smoke alarms in every sleeping • room and outside each separate sleeping area.

Test your smoke alarms at least once a • month and press the button to be sure that the alarm is working.

If the alarm does not respond during testing, replace the batteries or the device immediately.

A smoke alarm should be on the ceiling or high on a wall. Keep smoke alarms away from the kitchen to reduce false alarms.

Replace all smoke alarms in your home every 10 years.

When a smoke alarm sounds, get out immediately.

A person can be poisoned by even a small amount of carbon monoxide over a longer period of time or by a large amount of CO over a shorter amount of time.

According to statistics, fire departments across the nation respond to an average of nine CO-related calls per hour.

Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for placement and mounting height.

Call your local fire department’s non-emergency number to find out what number to call if the CO alarm sounds.

Replace them according to manufacturer instructions.

If the audible trouble signal sounds, check for low batteries. If the batteries are low, replace them. If signal still sounds, call the fire department.

If the CO alarm sounds, immediately move to a fresh-air location outdoors or by an open window or door. Make sure everyone inside the home is accounted for.

Call for help from a fresh-air location and stay there until emergency personnel arrive.
