reasons to live in
Tucked along the Henry Hudson Parkway in the northwest Bronx, Greater Riverdale stands out as one of New York City’s most livable neighborhoods — a quiet, tree-lined enclave with direct access to Manhattan and a deep sense of community.
For newcomers and longtime residents alike, the area offers a rare balance: proximity to the city without the noise, density, or fast pace that define much of the five boroughs.
Riverdale continues to attract those seeking a different kind of city life.
Access to green space
Riverdale is among the most verdant neighborhoods in New York City. Just east of the Hudson River and bordered by Van Cortlandt Park — nearly 1,200 acres of trails, sports fields and forest — the area offers outdoor space that rivals any part of the five boroughs. Several botanical gardens, quiet walking paths and scenic overlooks are easily accessible from residential streets. Even the neighborhood’s residential landscaping, with its wide lawns and mature trees, contributes to its lush feel.

Cultural and campus events
While Riverdale may not match Manhattan’s nightlife, it offers its own share of arts and culture. The neighborhood is home to Manhattan College, a Division I school with NCAA tournament-caliber teams and campus events open to the public. The University of Mount Saint Vincent and Lehman College, both nearby, host performances, lectures and student showcases. In the case of Lehman, the Center for the Performing Arts is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year with multiple concerts and shows of interest.

Access to Manhattan
Riverdale’s location makes it a draw for professionals, students and commuters. With Midtown just 11 miles away, the neighborhood is well connected by MetroNorth’s Hudson Line, the No. 1 subway and several bus routes. Trips into the city often take under an hour. That accessibility has made the neighborhood especially appealing for those who want the amenities of New York City and the ability to leave them behind at the end of the day.

Dining options
Riverdale’s culinary offerings reflect its diversity. From family-run kosher delis and Latin American restaurants to steakhouses like Connaughton’s and highly rated eateries such as Bokaguá, the neighborhood offers a wide range of dining experiences.
For many residents, the food scene is a source of local pride and a reflection of the community’s cultural mix.
Safety and sustainability
Riverdale consistently ranks as one of the safest areas in the Bronx. That security has helped foster several community-based environmental initiatives — including beautification projects, sustainable gardening programs and quality-of-life improvements. Taken together, Riverdale’s greenery, walkability, and tight-knit atmosphere continue to set it apart from other New York neighborhoods — offering city living without the compromise.

Things to do in
Tucked away in the northwest Bronx, Fieldston feels like a world apart from the rest of New York City. Known for its winding streets, stately homes and leafy, parklike setting, the neighborhood is a designated historic district that has preserved much of its early 20thcentury charm.
Fieldston was developed in the early 1900s as a planned suburbanstyle community for city residents seeking more space and greenery. Many of its Tudor, Colonial and Mediterranean Revival homes were designed by noted architects, and the area’s private streets give it an exclusivity rarely found within city limits.
Today, Fieldston remains primarily residential, but for those with an appreciation of history, architecture, and peaceful escapes, there’s plenty to explore.
Here are ways to enjoy this one-of-akind Bronx neighborhood.
Take an Architectural Walking Tour
Fieldston’s historic designation means its character has been carefully preserved. Walking the neighborhood’s quiet, curved streets reveals a mix of Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, and Mediterraneanstyle homes built between 1910 and 1930. The stone walls, wrought-iron gates, and meticulous landscaping create a timeless atmosphere. Architecture enthusiasts can spot works by notable designers such as Dwight James Baum and Julius Gregory.

Visit the Riverdale-Yonkers Society for Ethical Culture
Located on the edge of Fieldston, the Riverdale-Yonkers Society for Ethical Culture has been a hub of community programming for over a century. The building’s design reflects the neighborhood’s historic character; its calendar features lectures, concerts and cultural events that draw attendees from across the Bronx and beyond. Even outside of events, the grounds are worth a look as part of a neighborhood walk.
Explore Van Cortlandt Park’s Trails
One of the city’s largest parks borders Fieldston, giving residents and visitors easy access to miles of trails, ballfields and open space. The park’s John Muir Trail and Old Croton Aqueduct Trail are both accessible from the neighborhood’s edges and offer a quick escape into nature. Whether you’re looking for a challenging hike, a light jog or a scenic walk,Van Cortlandt Park delivers.

Take in the Academic Atmosphere of Local Schools
Fieldston is home to several prestigious private schools, including the Ethical Culture Fieldston School and Horace Mann School. While their campuses are not open to the public, their presence has shaped the neighborhood’s intellectual and cultural life for decades. The architecture and landscaping of these campuses add to Fieldston’s distinctive feel, making them a point of interest on a walk or drive through the area.
Enjoy a Scenic Drive or Bike Ride
Fieldston’s private streets are some of the most scenic in the Bronx, especially during the spring bloom and fall foliage. The winding layout, lined with mature trees and historic homes, makes for a peaceful drive or a leisurely bike ride. It’s a chance to slow down and appreciate a corner of New York that feels more like a countryside estate than an urban neighborhood.
Gary Jean-Juste Fieldston’s private streets are part of its appeal.

Things to do in
Kingsbridge is one of the Bronx’s busiest and most historically significant neighborhoods. Centered around the intersection of Broadway, West 230th Street and Kingsbridge Road, it’s a major commercial and transit hub that has long served as a crossroads for the northwest Bronx.
The area takes its name from a wooden bridge built in 1693 by Frederick Philipse, connecting Manhattan Island to the mainland via Spuyten Duyvil Creek. Over the centuries, Kingsbridge evolved from a rural outpost to a bustling shopping district — and today it remains a place where commerce, history, and community converge.
Here's what to do when exploring Kingsbridge.
Visit the Kingsbridge Armory
The Kingsbridge Armory is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Bronx — and one of the largest armory buildings in the world. Completed in 1917, the castle-like structure has been at the center of redevelopment debates for years. While the interior is currently closed to the public, its imposing architecture and historical significance make it worth seeing up close. It’s a striking reminder of the neighborhood’s military and civic history.

Shop and Stroll on Broadway
Broadway is Kingsbridge’s main artery and one of the Bronx’s busiest shopping streets. Here you’ll find a mix of chain stores, supermarkets, bargain shops, and small businesses. The sidewalks are always buzzing, and the street offers a real taste of the neighborhood’s diverse population. Whether you’re running errands, hunting for a good deal, or peoplewatching, Broadway is the place to be.
Explore Local Eateries
Kingsbridge’s dining scene is a reflection of the Bronx’s multicultural character. You can grab Dominican empanadas, Mexican tacos, or classic New York pizza within a few blocks. Some family-run spots have been serving locals for decades, making them neighborhood institutions. Stopping in for a meal is as much about the community as it is about the food.
Kingsbridge’s dining scene offers many tasty options.

Connect with the Past at Historical Spots
Beyond the Kingsbridge Armory, the neighborhood has deep historical roots. The original “King’s Bridge” was dismantled in the 19th century, but its legacy lives on in the name and local lore. A short walk or bus ride takes you to nearby historic sites, including the Van Cortlandt House Museum in adjacent Van Cortlandt Park — the oldest surviving building in the Bronx.
Access Transit and the Wider Bronx
Kingsbridge’s role as a transportation hub is part of its appeal. The 1 train at 231st Street or 238th Street connects you directly to Manhattan, while multiple bus routes make it easy to reach Riverdale, Marble Hill, Fordham, and beyond. Even if you’re just passing through, Kingsbridge offers plenty of reasons to pause and explore.

Places to give back in in
From the tree-lined streets to the bustling parks, Riverdale thrives when neighbors pitch in.
Whether you have time, skills or resources to share, check out these meaningful ways to make a difference right here at home.
Help Through the 4Bronx Project
Founded during the pandemic, the 4Bronx Project has grown into a boroughwide effort to deliver essentials — from diapers to birthday cakes — to families in shelters. Volunteers respond quickly to specific needs, often delivering requested items within hours. The project partners with local shelters, providing not only goods but also celebrations like holiday parties and back-to-school events. Donors can give items, funds, or even host drives for new clothing and toys. The work is flexible — one day you might be sorting strollers, the next setting up a Valentine’s Day craft table. Every task supports dignity and joy for families facing hardship. The 4Bronx Project’s grassroots approach makes it easy for Riverdale residents to jump in and see an immediate impact.

Get Involved with Kingsbridge Heights Community Center
Just a short trip from central Riverdale, Kingsbridge Heights Community Center (KHCC) offers volunteer opportunities for all ages and skill sets. KHCC runs early childhood programs, after-school tutoring, family support services, and a food pantry. Volunteers can help in classrooms, mentor teens, assist with special events, or pack and distribute food. The center also welcomes professional skills — from accounting to marketing — to strengthen its operations. KHCC’s building buzzes with activity, and volunteers become part of a supportive network that serves the broader northwest Bronx. Whether you’re teaching chess, sorting donated coats, or lending a hand in the community garden, your time at KHCC directly benefits neighbors in need.
Join a Park Clean-Up or Beautification Project
Riverdale’s parks — from Ewen and Seton to Spuyten Duyvil Shorefront — are neighborhood treasures, but they need regular care. Groups like the Van Cortlandt Park Alliance and Community Board 8 organize “It’s My Park” days where volunteers plant flowers, pick up litter, rake leaves and sometimes even restore trails. Clean-ups are often family-friendly, with tools and gloves provided, and they offer a chance to meet neighbors while improving public spaces. Even outside organized events, residents can “adopt” a park area or street tree, watering during dry spells and clearing debris. Beautification not only improves safety and enjoyment but also fosters community pride. Your hour in the park could make someone’s afternoon stroll cleaner, safer and greener. Students
have painted murals to help beautify the community at large.
KHCC offers volunteer help for families and schools in the community.
Support Friendly Fridges and Food Pantries
Food insecurity affects many Bronx households, and Riverdale neighbors can help through the community’s friendly fridges and food pantries. Friendly fridges outdoor refrigerators stocked with donated food allow anyone to take what they need, no questions asked. Volunteers can drop off fresh produce, pantry items or prepared meals, or help with upkeep to ensure food safety. Local fridges often work hand in hand with area pantries, such as those supported by faith groups and nonprofits. Monetary donations help organizers buy fresh goods when supplies run low, and social media shares keep the community aware of what’s needed most. The work is direct, immediate and neighbor-to-neighbor a simple way to make sure no one goes hungry.
Volunteer with Riverdale Senior Services
Riverdale Senior Services (RSS) offers far more than a place to socialize it’s a lifeline for older adults. Volunteers can lead classes, help with tech training, or assist with wellness programs that support independence and healthy aging. The center’s case managers also connect seniors with benefits and resources, and having extra hands means more personal attention for each participant. Even an hour a week helping someone learn to use a smartphone can combat isolation and open doors for communication. RSS is also looking for help with its creative arts studio and group activities, so those with a flair for painting, music or movement can contribute directly. It’s a chance to build intergenerational bonds and learn from residents who have deep roots in the community.

puyten Duyvil may be one of the smallest neighborhoods in the Bronx, but it’s rich in scenery, history, and that “tucked-away” feeling locals cherish. Perched at the southwestern tip of Riverdale, it offers a mix of waterfront views, leafy parks, and easy access to both the Hudson and Harlem rivers.
Whether you’re a resident or just passing through, you'll enjoy a day in Spuyten Duyvil.
Take in the views at Spuyten Duyvil Shorefront Park
For a quiet escape, head down to Shorefront Park, where the Hudson River meets the Palisades across the water. The park’s walking path and benches make it an ideal spot for a picnic or simply watching the boats go by. Locals say the sunsets here are among the best in the Bronx, with the river reflecting fiery streaks of orange and pink. Birdwatchers will also find it a rewarding stop, with hawks, cormorants, and the occasional bald eagle soaring overhead.

The Spuyten Duyvil Bridge is home to many great views of the shorefront.
Ride the Metro-North Hudson Line for the scenery
The Spuyten Duyvil Metro-North station is not only a transit hub it’s a front-row seat to some of the most beautiful views in the city. Hop on a Hudson Line train and you’ll be treated to sweeping river vistas in either direction. Heading north toward Yonkers and beyond reveals rugged cliffs and open water; heading south takes you past the Harlem River Ship Canal and into Manhattan. Even a short trip is worth it for the photos alone.
Visit Henry Hudson Park
Named for the explorer who sailed the river in 1609, Henry Hudson Park is home to a striking bronze statue of its namesake. The park’s playground, basketball courts and grassy areas make it a favorite for families, while history buffs appreciate the monument’s nod to the neighborhood’s maritime roots. In spring and summer, the park comes alive with kids playing, neighbors chatting on benches, and community events.

Explore the trails of Riverdale Park
Tucked just east of the train station, Riverdale Park is one of New York City’s lesser-known green spaces — and that’s part of its charm. Its winding dirt trails lead you through a preserved woodland filled with native plants, wildflowers and the occasional deer sighting. It’s easy to forget you’re still in the city while you’re surrounded by the sound of rustling leaves and birdsong. For photographers and nature lovers, it’s a yearround destination.
Watch the Harlem River Ship Canal in action
At the Spuyten Duyvil Bridge, where the Harlem River meets the Hudson, you’ll find a fascinating mix of rail and maritime activity. Freight trains rumble across the bridge, while barges, kayaks and pleasure boats navigate the canal. It’s a favorite viewing spot for transportation enthusiasts, especially when the swing bridge turns to let larger vessels through. On a warm day, you can spend hours just taking in the movement of the water and the changing skyline.

Marble Hill is unlike any other neighborhood in New York City. Though it is legally part of Manhattan, it sits entirely on the mainland, connected to the Bronx. This rare quirk of geography has given Marble Hill a unique identity — one foot in the bustle of Manhattan politics, the other firmly planted in the rhythms of Bronx life.
The neighborhood’s history dates back to the late 19th century, when the Harlem River was rerouted to improve navigation. The construction of the Harlem River Ship Canal separated Marble Hill from Manhattan Island, briefly making it its own island. Landfill later connected it to the Bronx, but Marble Hill retained its Manhattan designation on maps and in voting districts.
Today, Marble Hill is small in size but rich in character. It’s a community where you can walk end-to-end in minutes, yet still find traces of New York history, familyowned businesses, and access to parks and transit.
Here's how to explore and enjoy Marble Hill.
Walk the Borough Line
Marble Hill’s streets are an urban geography lesson in motion. Technically Manhattan, yet part of the Bronx mainland, it’s one of the only places in the city where you can say you’ve been to Manhattan without crossing a bridge or tunnel. A neighborhood stroll reveals a mix of modest apartment buildings, small businesses, and friendly faces. It’s also a perfect setting for an informal walking tour to explore the neighborhood’s history and unusual boundaries.
Julius Constantine Motal
Marble Hill’s streets are an urban geography lesson in motion.
Visit the Harlem River Ship Canal
Much like residents in Spuyten Duyvil, on the southern edge of Marble Hill lies the Harlem River Ship Canal, a man-made waterway completed in 1895. Originally carved to improve shipping routes, it transformed the neighborhood into an island for a time. Today, the canal still serves as a thoroughfare for boats and offers a glimpse of the city’s engineering past. Watching the water traffic from shore is both relaxing and a reminder of how the city’s landscape was shaped by human hands.
Shop and Dine on Broadway
Broadway is Marble Hill’s commercial heartbeat, lined with a variety of momand-pop shops, small markets and eateries. You can start your day with a fresh cup of coffee from a local café, pick up produce at a bodega, or sit down for a hearty meal at one of the neighborhood’s Latin American or Caribbean restaurants. These businesses aren’t just convenient they’re central to the neighborhood’s identity and community ties.
Gary Jean-Juste Broadway rolls right through Marble Hill and holds many restaurants and stores to check out.

Enjoy Nearby Green Spaces
While Marble Hill itself doesn’t have expansive parks, it’s surrounded by green options. Just across the Harlem River, Riverbank State Park offers walking paths, sports facilities and sweeping Hudson River views. Within walking distance, Bronx playgrounds like Fort Charles give local families a place to gather. A short trip north brings you to Van Cortlandt Park, one of the city’s largest and most scenic green spaces, perfect for hiking, biking and picnicking.
Ride the Historic 1 Train
Transit lovers will appreciate that the Marble Hill–225th Street station is part of the original Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) subway system, which opened in 1904. The elevated stop connects the neighborhood to both the Bronx and Manhattan in minutes, offering not just convenience but a tangible link to New York’s transit history. Even if you’re just passing through, it’s worth a moment to take in the views from the platform.

ARC has been supporting and advocating for co-op shareholders and condominium owners in Riverdale and throughout the Bronx for nearly four decades. ARC provides regular seminars and maintains an up-to-the-minute website that informs and educate shareholders, building managers and community residents, as well as those considering a move to our neighborhood.
In recent years, ARC
• Helps negotiate the new contract with Local 32 BJ that keeps labor costs fair and reasonable
• Serves as a clearinghouse for vital Information on Implementation of Local Law 97
• Lobbies for NYS Property Tax Abatement for co-op and condo owners, recently reauthorized
• Advocates with respect to legislation impacting boards and shareholders
• Works continuously with legislators to oppose efforts to weaken co-op board autonomy
• Updates members annually on legal issues and current rulings from the courts
The ARC webpage is all about co-ops, condos and our neighborhood – and nothing else! It is also an easy way to contact ARC directly and get answers to your personal questions. Just go to arcriverdale.com. If your building is not a member - join us!
