O
n the morning of Feb. 23, the Red team gathered at the South Side High School gym for a full practice of their skit, dancing, tumbling and tap-dancing routines for one of the last times before the 106th Red & Blue competition. Captains Haley Zelles and Noelle Cairnie went from station to station as the coordinators they delegated for each routine ran through them step-bystep. “Especially this being the last week before the actual performance and it being over break has made it difficult attendance-wise,” Cairnie said.“But we seem to have everything together and I feel really confident for next week.” Zelles said she was excited for the skit. Cairnie said she was proud of the tumbling routine, noting it will be an especially unique one compared to years past. Both captains beamed with excitement. “Every year watching my past captains, I wanted to do that as a senior,” Zelles said. “I’m so grateful that I have the opportunity, and with everything we’ve done I wouldn’t change a single thing.” ■

lue team girls entered the school on Feb. 23 for practice as the Red team left, each team singing their fight songs as they crossed paths. Captains Sophie Greenberg and Alex Kearns led the way. "I think it went really well,” Greenberg said of practice. “We don’t have the boys with us today, which is a big part of our skit.” Blue started off by getting straight into their songs; one in appreciation of their Red team opponents and another proclaiming another Blue victory. Even while shorthanded, the girls’ voices were enough to reverberate throughout the gym. Greenberg and Kearns led a full run through of their songs, skits and routines in the gym. One of Greenberg and Kearns’ favorite aspects of the storied competition is seeing girls with hidden talents, especially in the prop and poster creation. “It’s cool to see the individual talents, because not everyone is a dancer or an artist, so they get to shine in their area,” Kearns said.“And for us, it’s great to learn who is really good at what,” Greenberg added. ■

1917 was a time of global turmoil. World War I raged, sending many parts of the planet into chaos. It was also a time of innovation. Albert Einstein published his first paper on cosmology, according to the worldhistoryproject.org, and illusionist Harry Houdini performed his famed buried-alive escape for the first time. The International Committee of the Red Cross won the Nobel Peace Prize. And William “Buffalo Bill” Cody died — and, with him, a significant piece of the Wild West. In what was then the pastoral Village of Rockville Centre, at South Side High School, a new tradition was born — one that, more than a century later, is still going strong: Red and Blue. That year it was known simply as Girls Sports Night, started on April 10 by Elsie Spelman, the first woman to serve on the Rockville Centre Board of Education. At the time, girls were supposed to be quiet and demure. Sports were not for them, society said. In fact, it was not until 1972 — 55 years later — that girls won the right to play sports alongside boys in high school. That was the year Congress passed
Title IX, prohibiting discrimination against girls in any school district that accepts federal funding. These days it’s understood that girls would play sports — as competitively and as fiercely as their male counterparts. Back in the day, however, many saw girls’ participation in athletic activities as unseemly. That is why Girls Sports Night was a really big deal. Rockville Centre was breaking with tradition, and in a real sense, the event was a first baby step toward helping girls achieve equality on the field of play. Girls Sports Night became Red and Blue — signifying the two teams participating in the event representing the school's colors — in 1918. Girls put on skits and held races, all in the name of good fun. The event was an instant hit. Early on, it grew so popular that it had to be moved out of South Side High School into the local Masonic Hall, the only space around large enough to accommodate all of the participants. It was held there until 1924, when a new South Side High School (now South Side Middle School) was built on Hillside Avenue. Originally, Red and Blue was only for

junior and senior girls — no boys allowed. Eventually, though, freshmen and sophomore girls were permitted to join in, along with a limited number of boys. At the start, Red and Blue was a singlenight affair. Now it’s a three-night extravaganza that is a much-anticipated high point of the annual school calendar. There was once a banquet as part of the festivi-

ties, but that stopped in the 1980s. While the event’s basic structure has changed over the decades, Rockville Centre girls’ enthusiasm for Red and Blue has never waned. This year, entering its storied 106th year, the Blue team seeks to "three-peat" after emerging victorious in 2020 and '21, while Red looks to take the crown for the first time since 2019. ■

Frequently asked questions How did Red and Blue start?
When South Side High School’s Red and Blue was first organized in 1917, women weren’t allowed to vote in the United States, let alone compete in sports. As an alternative, it was created as a school competition exclusively for girls. It wasn’t until Title IX passed in 1972 that public schools finally allowed girls to participate in all the activities that boys could.
What activities do the girls compete in?
The Red and Blue teams roll out skits during the three-night event filled with props, costumes, singing and dance routines. Between the performances, the girls compete in various sports and relays, including volleyball, tug of war and floor hockey, among others.

relay and volleyball, good for 3 points each. It also won emblem, props, three of the five dance routines — jazz a, jazz b and disco — tumbling and attendance. The teams tied on costumes, scoring 3 points each. The Red team, however, won the basketball relay and tug of war, had the best posters, aerobic dance and tap dance routines, and scored high where it count-

Blue team members screamed with joy after learning of their win over the Red team in South Side High School’s 104th Red and Blue competition in March 2020. In a close three-day battle between the teams, Blue came out on top, by a score of 52-47. Over the three nights of dancing, skits, songs, relays and other athletic events, about 400 girls engaged in friendly competition, a tradition that has held strong in Rockville Centre for over a century. Hundreds of people flocked to the high school to watch the events, which kicked off on March 5, 2020, when the themes were revealed: Eyewitness Blues and RedTime Stories. The serious competition began on Friday and continued on Saturday, providing a showcase for the girls to reveal the work they had done over the previous five weeks. Under the direction of South Side teachers Megan O’Brien and Margaret Kelly, the girls, freshmen through seniors, spent hours every day creating and practicing their various routines. “Every year, what stands out most among both teams is the amount of work the girls are able to get accomplished in such a short period of time,” O’Brien

The skit was something the Red cocaptains, seniors Jillian Schumacher and Katie Ernst, said they were most excited about before the competition. They wrote it, and said they put a lot of time into it. “We’re really proud of it,” Ernst said. “It’s something we worked really hard on.” Red and Blue was first organized in 1917, as an alternative to sports at a time when girls were not allowed to compete. “Red and Blue is a tradition that is important not only at South Side and with decades of alumni, but also with the community of Rockville Centre,” O’Brien said. “Many women who graduated from South Side return to this community and raise their families here, and their daughters in turn participate. The program brings together upwards of 400 girls who paint, sing, dance and compete in various athletic activities. It is an inclusive program that is used to emphasize unity, sportsmanship, empowerment and school spirit.” The team captains also emphasized that while winning is nice, it is not the point of the competition. “My favorite part about Red and Blue is making new friendships, meeting new people,” Blue co-captain and SSHS senior Nicolina Mauro said, “and creating a bond with every girl on the team.” ■
