March 2, 2017 — ROCKVILLE CENTRE HERALD - RED & BLUE - RED & BLUE

How did Red and Blue start?

In 1917, women weren’t even allowed to vote in the United States, let alone compete in sports. As an alternative, Red and Blue was organized as a school competition exclusively for girls. It wasn’t until Title IX was passed in 1972 that public schools finally allowed girls to participate in all of the activities boys could.

Why Red and Blue?

It might seem obvious, but Red and Blue have been South Side High School’s colors for more than a century.

What activities do the girls compete in?

d

The highlight of Red and Blue are the skits both teams roll out over the course of the event’s three nights. They include props, costumes and song and dance routines. In-between, the girls compete in various sports and relays that include, volleyball, scooter relays, tug of war, floor hockey and much more.

How are Red and Blue captains selected?

Will it be RTV or BTV? Only the judges will be able to tell us.

Shhh, it’s a secret.

That’s also a secret for now. But we’ll find out on March 3. n

There are nearly 400 girls competing in this year’s Red and Blue.

he Blue Team stayed cool in the run up to 2017’s Blue and Red competition. Looking forward to a BTV, Captains Allison Mullooly and Allison Mahoney, both 17, talked stress and success during practice on Feb. 18. Wearing a blue cape, Mullooly ran up and down the gymnasium, getting her team as excited as she felt.“I love my Blue Team,” she said. But the two Allisons agreed that being Blue Team captain was no easy task.“It’s really stressful,” Mullooly said. “But seeing it come together is probably one of the most satisfying feelings of my life.” Mahoney — a four year Blue Team veteran — agreed, but after her sister was captain before her, she knew about the challenges.“There are so many girls,” she acknowledged.“But I can’t wait to show everyone what we did. We worked so hard!” n

he Red Team was amping up for the big day, and during practice on Feb. 18, captains Jess Martino, 18, and Natalie Marinelli, 17, talked about the challenges and successes of this year’s Red and Blue season. “Fantastic, it’s been so fun,” Martino said about the run up to the event. “It’s the best time of the year,” Marinelli chimed in. But the two also acknowledged the struggles of wrangling together a team of nearly 200 high school aged girls in just four weeks. “It gets frustrating sometimes,” Martino said. “It’s a tight schedule,” Marinelli replied. The two spoke almost perfectly in sync. “Being in charge of 197 girls, it’s tough,” Martino explained. “It gets hard to make everyone happy but it’s fun,” Marinelli said. Despite the challenges, Martino was confident which team would be the victor.“It’s gonna be RTV by the way.” n

101 years and still going strong

By Scott Brinton sbrinton@liherald.com

1917 was a time of global turmoil. World War I raged, sending many parts of the planet into chaos. It was also a time of innovation. Albert Einstein published his first paper on cosmology, according to the worldhistoryproject.org, and illusionist Harry Houdini performed his famed buriedalive escape for the first time. The International Committee of the Red Cross won the Nobel Peace Prize. And William “Buffalo Bill” Cody died — and, with him, a significant piece of the Wild West. In what was then the pastoral Village of Rockville Centre, at South Side High School, a new tradition was born — one that, a century later, is still going strong: Red and Blue. That year it was known simply as Girls Sports Night, started on April 10 by Elsie Spelman, the first woman to serve on the Rockville Centre Board of Education. At the time, girls were supposed to be quiet and demure. Sports were not for them, society said. In fact, it was not until 1972 — 55 years later — that girls won the right to play sports alongside boys in high school. That was the year Congress passed Title IX, prohibiting discrimination against girls in any

school district that accepts federal funding. These days it’s understood that girls would play sports — as competitively and as fiercely as their male counterparts. Back in the day, however, many saw girls’ participation in athletic activities as unseemly. nterest in Red and Blue reached a fever pitch in 2016 as South Side High School celebrated the 100th anniversary of this much-loved event. Women from around the tri-state area and even the country eagerly anticipated the event, even holding a 100th anniversary reunion on April 1, 2016, in the St. Agnes Parish Center on Quealy Place. In the weeks leading up to the reunion, women from around the U.S. posted their photos of years past on — where else? — Facebook. A number of women, several years removed from high school, noted that they still have their Red and Blue T-shirts — and, of course, the fond memories and friendships forged by one of Rockville Centre’s most enduring traditions. n
