GymCats.net

Founded more than 30 years ago with the main goal of creating athletes as well as the foundation for them to succeed both in and

out of sports.

Classes start as young as 20 months, and continue to challenge them well into their teens in the most modern, fully equipped facility in southern New York state. It is centrally located in Yonkers, the Hastings and Dobbs Ferry areas.

No other summer day program can offer quality instruction by experts in beginner through advanced gymnastics all year long. While their program offers a fun-filled good time, it also enriches the development of children by providing attitudes and skills that carry over in many of life’s activities.

The goal is to build a physical and mental foundation for all sports, and to promote athleticism and good health through participation in gymnastics. There is a low student-to-teacher ratio. All students are grouped by age.

Located within the same facility, the Ninja obstacle course adds another layer of athleticism and fun to our camp day. Campers will run their hardest to get up the warped wall and test their balance, strength and problem solving skills to make it through the many obstacle course options. Their self-confidence and motivation will be enhanced by the support and cheering of their instructors and fellow campers.

What better way to give your son a leg up on the competition than by having him perform under the tutelage of Westchester’s premier scholar-athletes?

Iona Preparatory is the three-time defending LoHud.com Sports’ Tom Whelan Private School of the Year and routinely beats national averages when it comes to college commitments. Already this year, 23 scholar-athletes have committed to schools such as Cornell, Dartmouth, Georgetown, UPenn and Yale.

They represent 14 percent of their class, double the national average, with an incredible 9 percent going to Division I schools, more than four times the national average. Even more impressively, those 23 scholarathletes have a combined GPA of over 91.

Now is the time to get prepared for

summer by learning more about the school’s summer sports clinics in baseball, basketball, football, soccer and wrestling spanning 10 weeks from June 26-Aug. 11, including five straight after the Fourth of July.

Baseball, basketball and football kick things off June 26-30. Then, following a break for Independence Day, wrestling hits the mat July 10 - 14. From there they have three straight weeks of Total Tech Soccer from July 17-Aug. 4, with the second and third sessions of basketball overlapping July 24-Aug. 4. Baseball closes out our summer sports clinic season by bookending with a final session from Aug. 7-11.

And they all take place across Iona Prep’s expansive 37-acre collegiate-style campus. What better way for your son to spend his summer days than in the company of the brotherhood of Iona men?

Keep summer days fun and busy when camp ends

Many adults have fond memories of attending summer camp when they were children. The American Camp Association reports that each year more than 14 million children and adults take advantage of the camp experience.

Summer camp is a place for kids to learn new skills, make new friends, experience being away from home for extended periods of time, and explore new locales. The program length can vary as some children attend local camps that may last a week or two, while others attend sleepaway camps that last a little longer.

Since summer vacation typically lasts between eight to 10 weeks, parents may

discover there still is plenty of downtime after summer camp ends. Here are some ways to fill the gap between the end of camp and the start of a new school year.

Schedule a vacation

What better way to keep the magic of summer going than by rolling summer camp right into a family vacation? Give kids time to enjoy a few days to relax at home, but then buckle up for the next adventure. This can be a trip away from home, or a series of day trips or activities guided by all members of the family.

Organize a sleepover exchange

Parents of school children can coordi-

nate with one another to fill up a week or more with sleepovers. Each family can take a night or two, and the kids can jump from house to house extending the fun with one another. Sleepovers can occur inside the home or under tents in the yard.

Recreate favorite camp activities at home

Why not take what makes camp entertaining and try it at home? Copy the camp’s itinerary and engage in similar activities, such as canoeing or nature hikes. On nights when the weather cooperates, everyone can gather around a fire pit to roast marshmallows.

Enroll in a recreational program

Some towns offer free or low-fee activities to residents through their parks and recreation departments. If budgeting does not allow for a camp experience, there are likely town-wide activities that can fill the gaps until it’s time for children to go back to school. Some even may offer after-hours childcare options for parents who have scheduling conflicts with work. When summer camp ends, parents have different options they can explore to keep children engaged and supervised until a new school year begins.

They provide each child with a nutritious snack during program, plenty of water and cooling stations.

Summer crafts families can enjoy together

Things seem to slow down in summer as the hurried pace that dominates much of the year takes a backseat to vacations, lounging around the pool, diving through ocean waves, and setting up tents at campsites near or far.

When the weather is accommodating, there’s a seemingly endless list of ways to enjoy time spent outdoors. But as everyone knows, Mother Nature tends to be a bit unpredictable during the hazy days of summer. Thunderstorms can roll in quite suddenly, or rain may persist for a few days as the atmosphere attempts to right itself after an abundance of steamy days.

Keep a list of craft ideas at the ready to make the most of time spent inside or out. The following are a few.

• Friendship bracelets: There have been

different iterations of friendship bracelets for every generation. With some general craft supplies, such as embroidery thread, beads, plastic lanyards, or other jewelry-making materials, kids can make and share a variety of friendship bracelets.

• Seashell creatures: At the next beach excursion, pick up differently shaped shells. They can be painted and glued together to resemble different animals or whatever designs one can imagine.

• Dreamcatchers: With some twigs, yarn and feathers, crafters can make dreamcatchers to hang bedside.

• Sunprints: Check out the craft store for a special light-sensitive solution that can

be painted onto thick craft paper. Set various natural items on top (such as fern boughs, shells, feathers, and more) and let the sun do its work. You’ll ultimately be left with some beautiful silhouettes.

• Leather sewing kits: Evoke the feelings of summer camp right at home with leather sewing kits that enable everyone to make handcrafted leather wallets or small purses.

• Painted stones: Kids can have fun gathering smooth pebbles from trails or at the shores of lakes. They can be painted with various designs or sweet sentiments, only to be left around the neighborhood for others to discover.

• Sea glass jewelry: An adult can use a

very thin drill bit to make holes in sea glass remnants that washed up on beaches. Feed through earring hooks or chains to create one-of-a-kind jewelry.

• Dyed shoes or accessories: Use commercially produced or homemade dyes made from teabags, berry juice, turmeric powder, or more to color certain items. Dress up canvas sneakers with summertime hues, or make colorful bandanas to help keep you cool.

Summer craft ideas abound to keep everyone entertained all season long.

Outdoor movie night essentials for families

OhOutdoor movie nights can be a great way to spend warm evenings with friends and loved ones. The guest list is only limited by the seating you have, and even then, movie watchers easily can sit on picnic blankets, making it simple to host a crowd.

Movie nights outdoors may be different than those in a theater or living room, but certain must-have items are no less important. No movie night under the stars is complete without these essentials.

Projector and screen

A screen and a way to project the movie are must-haves for any outdoor movie night. Projectors should be small enough that they can be carried outside, but large enough to emit enough light to fill the screen. Options range anywhere from $400 and up for quality projectors.

Screens run the gamut from inflatable and free-standing options to white sheets hung from a clothesline. A dedicated screen will be more stable and look better, but it all comes down to budget.

Portable speaker

A portable speaker can be moved anywhere you need it. A speaker with an auxiliary input enables you to hook it up to your video source so that the audio-video synchronization is top notch. After all, wireless connections may lag. The speaker will be functional for movie nights as well as music and entertainment for any outdoor event going forward. If your yard is large, you may need more than one speaker.

Media source

Individuals have various options for media players. Small players can plug

directly into projectors and are the easiest sources for backyard movies if the Wi-Fi signal in the yard is strong. You also may be able to connect a mobile phone or laptop/ tablet into the projector, relying on those devices to stream content.

Seating

Folding camp chairs are portable and can be stored for guests who prefer being off the ground for movie nights. Otherwise, thick, waterproof blankets enable guests to spread out while watching movies outdoors. They’re also great for kids who are liable to spend a portion of the time watching the movie, but much of it running around the yard.

Theater-style popcorn maker

Kernels, oil and heat are the perfect combination for producing movie-theater-

worthy popcorn. Place plenty of reusable popcorn containers nearby so guests can bring their bounty back to their seats. Canned beverages with straws also are portable and pair well with popcorn for a great movie experience.

Lighting

Outdoor stringed lighting adds ambience and safety to a space. However, you also may want to consider using some solar-powered staked lights on the ground to map out aisles and make it easier for guests to navigate the yard in the dark. These basics can get anyone started on hosting regular outdoor movie nights.
