The hamlet of Oyster Bay is one of the most historically significant places in New York, serving as a hub of the North Shore’s commerce, recreation and residence. Despite its relatively small size of 1.6 square miles — 1.2 square miles of land and 0.4 square miles of water — the hamlet is home to roughly 6,826 residents, and people from across Long Island are constantly coming and going to enjoy the many restaurants and waterfront activities that Oyster Bay has to offer.

Dutch explorers named Oyster Bay in 1615 for the abundance of shellfish in the nearby waters. The area was settled by the British in 1653 after colonists Samuel Mayo, Peter Wright and Reverend Leverich purchased the land from the Matinecock Native American tribe. When the American Revolution erupted in the latter quarter of the 18th century, British soldiers occupied the hamlet, using Raynham Hall as a local headquarters. Local legend has it that it was there that Colonial spy Robert Townsend first learned of Benedict Arnold’s plan to surrender West Point.

Oyster Bay was also home to one of the United States’ most revered presidents — Theodore Roosevelt. He and his family lived at Sagamore Hill, a sprawling property that has been perfectly preserved. It also served as the “Summer White House” during Roosevelt’s presidency. Visitors can tour the house and surrounding land to take a trip back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Roosevelt’s footprint is also found elsewhere nearby at the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, the latter of which provides pristine views of Oyster Bay Harbor. As a staunch environmentalist and nature lover, Roosevelt would be proud to see such a meaningful homage.

The hamlet remains a thriving center of fun and excitement on the Long Island Sound that attracts thousands of visitors every year. With everything there is to do and all of the wonderful people who call it home, Oyster Bay continues to write its history today.

Although incorporated in 1919, the Village of Bayville has had a historic run dating back over 350 years. Covering 1.5 square miles at the edge of the Long Island Sound, Bayville’s population has grown from 625 in 1920 to around 6,700 people in 2016. What began as a small farming center has transformed into a vibrant beachfront community filled with restaurants and an amusement park. But through it all, Bayville’s pristine beaches remain as the village’s most timeless draws.

Charles E. Ransom Beach Across the street from the Bayville Adventure Park, this public beach provides visitors with great views of the Long Island Sound and opportunities for fishing. Local restaurants can satisfy any beach cravings, and in the summer, the beach hosts a live concert series called “Music Under the Stars.”

Centre Island Beach Stretching 650 feet across the Long Island Sound, Centre Island Beach provides swimming access in both the Sound and the Oyster Bay Harbor for residents and non-residents of Oyster Bay. The beach is also a great place to spot clams, oysters, crabs and fish.

Stehli Beach Reserved exclusively for Town of Oyster Bay residents, Stehli Beach is one of the North Shore’s most well-kept secrets, allowing for a quiet beach escape from the crowds. A nice walk along the beach will not only offer stunning views of the Long Island Sound but numerous shells for children to collect.

West Harbor Beach Open to Bayville residents, West Harbor Beach Memorial Park provides direct access to the Oyster Bay Harbor for boat launching. Whether its fishing, kayaking, swimming, searching for clams, having a catch or hosting a picnic, West Harbor Beach provides for hours of fun. The beach also hosts a free concert series and yearly five-mile running events.

The greater “Locust Valley area,” which encompasses the nearby incorporated villages of Mill Neck, Matinecock and Lattingtown, has also created a larger community for residents to immerse themselves in. Known for its sprawling country clubs and several historic landmarks, Locust Valley held onto its small-town charm, while offering local residents a luxurious lifestyle.

Piping Rock Club Built in 1911, this prestigious country club’s roster of famous members includes J.P. Morgan Jr., Conde Montrose Nast and Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt. Featuring an 18-hole golf course, croquet, squash and tennis courts, beach access and multiple dining areas, Piping Rock has long maintained its reputation as one of the best country clubs on the Gold Coast.

The Creek Founded in 1923 by J.P. Morgan Jr., The Creek was known as the “Million Dollar Club” because of its exclusivity and wealthy members. Located 1 mile north of the Locust Valley Long Island Rail Road station, The Creek has continued to satisfy its members with a renowned golf course overlooking the Long Island Sound and world-class tennis courts.

Bailey Arboretum This 42-acre arboretum in Lattingtown is open to the public seven days a week with no parking or admission fees. Located on the estate of financier and philanthropist Frank Bailey, the arboretum provides visitors with beautiful views, nature walks and educational programming all year round. The arboretum also contains the world’s largest Dawn Redwood tree, making it a must-see destination for horticulture enthusiasts.

Forest Avenue Located just steps from the Locust Valley train station, the village’s “main street” is home to dozens of shops and restaurants. This includes American bistro The Brass Rail, and pub Buckram Stables Cafe, the latter of which has been a staple of Locust Valley since 1986. Other stores include one of Long Island’s four “Mint Clothing Boutiques,” along with “G. Willikers,” a toy store that has been in business since 1983.

Bayville

celebrates its centenary year

W

hen Bayville became an incorporated village on March 26,1919, there were probably not as many people there as there were at the events held in St. Gertrude’s Parish Hall on March or the block party in July. Spirits are always high whenever an event is held to mark the village’s 100th birthday, and the revelers include children, the very old, and everyone in between.

“Could the founding fathers ever fathom that this 1.5-mile strip of natural wonder would develop into a community of 7,000 residents, 1,900 families and 2,500 homes?” Bayville Mayor Bob De Natale asked. “The village footprint is quite small, but the story of its residents is huge.”

St. Gertrude’s Hall, festively decorated, was lined with tables

that included all kinds of memorabilia from organizations with the purpose of telling Bayville’s storied past. The second oldest business in Bayville, Wall’s Wharf, was represented, and there were many old photographs, including one of Bayville Fire Company’s first firehouse.

The block party in July, held in the village square, was a casual event to celebrate the village’s 100th birthday. It included activities for children, a $3,000 raffle, a variety of food and a visit from the Nassau County Police Department Pipe Band. Later, the popular Trip Kings, which features Mike Carrozza, of Bayville, performed for an enthusiastic crowd.

Bringing along lawn chairs and picnics. everyone celebrated their hometown yet and caught up with their neighbors and friends.

Living in Bayville is special. That’s something that residents have known for 100 years.

he setting for Oyster Bay’s Martin Luther King Day has traditionally been Christ Church, where there is an interdenominational service the Sunday before his birthday between the Episcopal church and neighboring Hood A.M.E. Zion Church, the Spanish church, El Camino de Vida, and the Hispanic Cultural Center.

Much is said about King, and when hymns are sung, there is a feeling of hope and gratitude for the civil rights leader’s sacrifices, a man who was killed while doing so much good.

“Dr. King was an advocate for justice, peace, righteousness and that all matters today,” said the Rev. Linda Vanager, A.M.E.’s pastor, during her sermon.

It has been 50 years since King died, Vanager added, and his legacy lives on.

Then she reminded parishioners of what King had said shortly before he was killed, “Only when it is dark enough can you see the stars.”

When parishioners, of many races, referenced King saying, “May the witness of Dr. King inspire all our people to reach out to truth, love and justice and minister to others,” they seemed to no longer be merely reciting a prayer. Their voices became unified. And when it came time to sing, “Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho” and

“We Shall Overcome,” their voices were raised in song almost as a plea.

Christ Church’s rector, the Rev. Dr. Michael Piret, said that it is important to mark Martin Luther King Day each year. “We are keeping alive the memory and meaning of a great prophet,” he said.

Raynham Hall Museum presents a unique side of Oyster Bay’s history

O

n Oyster Bay’s West Main Street, Raynham Hall Museum is home to over 250 years of history and has remained a local landmark for history buffs and hamlet residents alike.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the museum was once the home of the Townsend family, including Robert Townsend, who was a member of George Washington’s Culper Spy Ring during the Revolutionary War. Working under the alias “Culper Junior,” Townsend passed messages via courier from his merchant job in Manhattan to Long Island, where it was then rowed across the Long Island Sound to Washington in Connecticut.

Never revealing his involvement in the spy ring to his friends or family, Townsend’s identity as “Culper Junior” was not discovered until the 1930s. Today, many solely associate Raynham Hall with Townsend’s efforts, but the museum boasts a collection of more than 5,000 artifacts from the Townsend family’s storied history in Oyster Bay. Purchased by Townsend’s father, Samuel, in 1740, the homestead was eventually renovated and expanded in the Victorian style

during the mid-19th century. While the front part of the house was restored to its original Colonial appearance in the 1940s, the rest of the Victorian home and its many historic rooms remained intact, providing ample space for the museum to tell the stories of its inhabitants.

Among these stories are those of the British troops who were quartered in the house during the Revolutionary War, along with the many slaves who worked to maintain the homestead during that time. Claire Bellerjeau, education and public programs director at Raynham Hall, said displaying the full history of the Townsend homestead gives visitors a chance to see a space the “founders of America interacted with.”

“The Colonial part of our story is a national level story, but the reasons to come here are for every American,” she said.

Open from Tuesday through Sunday from 1-5 p.m., the museum offers paid group tours and educational programs for people of all ages, along with free events throughout the year, including a Valentine’s poetry contest, a Memorial Day open house and the annual Halloween Ghost Puppet Parade.

eople from near and far crowd the grounds of Mill Neck Manor every Columbus Day weekend in search of tasty fall treats and festive fun at the annual Mill Neck Apple Festival, set on an 86-acre scenic estate overlooking the Long Island Sound. For over 50 years, visitors have flocked to the manor to experience the best of autumn on Long Island.

The sprawling greens are filled with a variety of vendors selling ripe apples, handmade country crafts, seasonable produce and grilled bratwurst, courtesy of Karl Ehmer Meat Products. Festival

attendees can shop from a wide variety of cheeses in the Cheese House, and plenty of mouth-watering baked goods, jellies, fudge and strudels at the Country Store. Children can paint and decorate pumpkins selected from a nearby patch, and enjoy face-painting, fun games and bouncy houses.

Curious guests can take a tour of the historic Mill Neck Manor, a majestic Tudor revival mansion. The festival also showcases the latest in deaf technology, sign language novelty items and books.

Each year, Mill Neck Manor alumni attend the Apple Fest as a “homecoming,” with the event bringing the heart of the Long Island deaf community together.

Locust Valley EMT class for teens with a dream to aid the community

ulianna Corso’s career path is medicine. Ava Famiglietti plans to take over her father’s auto body shop.

Already a Bayville firefighter, Tommy Placilla, who will be at Nassau Community College next fall, hopes to become an athletic trainer. What the three Locust Valley High School seniors have in common, besides being 17 years old, is a passion for community. They are among nine students who have been taking the Emergency Medical Technician class after school since January. It is part of the district’s curriculum, and students will receive course credit for it. The seniors will attend 44 sessions, and if they pass the test at the end of June, they will become state-certified emergency medical technicians.

Kyra Schmeizer, 17, from Locust Valley, a high school cheerleader, plans to be a neurosurgeon someday. She said she

loves the class for a variety of reasons. “In school I have to learn different subjects that are not what I want to learn,” she explained. “This is something I do want to learn. And because I want to be a neurosurgeon, I thought it would be a good start to learning the beginnings of health care.”

The instructor is Jason Vitulli, 40, a New York City firefighter and the chief of patrol for the Town of Hempstead Emergency Medical Services. An additional benefit for the students, he said, is that the class allows for an introduction to the medical field prior to pursuing a course of study.

Typically, medical school students do not have contact with patients until the second or third year, he said.

The course, Vitulli said, is run the same way as an EMT course in college and what is offered at the Nassau County Emergency Medical Services Academy. It is also free, unlike a college course. And when the

seniors go to college, they may attend one that uses student EMTs, he said. Fordham University’s ambulance is run by students, as is the ambulance at SUNY Binghamton.

The students will learn about medication administration, including what is given to those experiencing an asthma attack and how to perform intermuscular injections. The local fire department brings an ambulance to the high school to allow students to learn how to use the equipment that emergency medical technicians use. And students master how to use a glucometer to check sugar levels for diabetics.

Famiglietti said she would like to volunteer for the Bayville Fire Company someday, adding that her father already does. “I really want to help people,” she said. “I like this class, the people and the teacher.”

A wagging good time at the library

A

t the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Library, reading isn’t only for humans. Once a month, a few furry friends join the mix for the library’s Dog Tales program, which pairs certified therapy dogs with reading-aged children.

Dog Tales provides children with the opportunity to read aloud to local therapy dogs, and thus get more comfortable with their reading skills. Not only are the dogs non-judgmental listeners, but also their inherently lovable nature helps put the young readers at ease.

The one-hour program welcomes children of all reading levels to engage one-on-one with one of three therapy dogs. At every session, the library provides a cart filled with animal-themed books, but participants are also invited to bring books from home. Monkey, an eccentric smoothcoated Brussels griffon; Maggie, a sassy vizsla; and Lady, a charming golden retriever, have been an essential part of the library’s Dog Tales since the beginning.

Legion ceremony honors the KIA veterans

Members of Bayville’s American Legion offered a salute to vet Robert Spittel, who died while serving in World War II, at a KIA ceremony outside the post.

I

n the 1970s, many college students wore POW/MIA bracelets. They were simple — nickel-plated or copper — engraved with name, rank and date of those fighting for our country in Vietnam who were either prisoners of war or missing in action. It was assumed that many of the missing were dead, but the bracelets provided hope.

The U.S. military casualty estimate in Vietnam was 58,220, according to the National Archives. But the loss of Americans was even graver during World War II. According to the National World War II Museum, 416,800 American military personnel died. They include Robert H. Spittel of Bayville.

An infantryman, he was killed at 21 years old on Dec. 8, 1944, shot by a sniper on the island of Leyte in the Philippines. It took until September 1948 for his parents to receive permission to bring their son’s body home for burial in Bayville Cemetery.

Bayville’s American Legion received its charter in 1943, naming the post after Spittel. His father, Herman, was the commander from 1945-47.

The post’s current commander, Vincent Libertini, said that members wanted to do more for the KIA’s – those that were killed in action. The post honored them for their service by holding a brief ceremony on the

day they were killed, in front of the post’s monument.

Gathering outside, the veterans stood at attention. The American and POW/MIA flags, both at half-staff, gently waved in the cold, early morning wind.

“We are holding this ceremony to remember Robert H. Spittel on the date that he was killed in action in Vietnam,” Libertini said. “We [will] place a wreath at the monument to honor him.”

Then there was a hand salute by the veterans and the playing of taps.

Plenty of memories at Atlantic Steamer Fire Company No. 1

By Laura Lane Atlantic Steamer Fire Company No. 1 has been a mainstay in Oyster Bay for over 100 years. Incorporated on Aug. 15, 1896, and approved by the Town of Oyster Bay the following September, it has served the hamlet of Oyster Bay, as well as the incorporated villages of Cove Neck, Oyster Bay Cove, Laurel Hollow and Mill Neck, ever since.

The members of Atlantic Steamer provide several services, including firefighting, emergency medical services, hazmat, vehicle rescue and extrication, search and rescue, water rescue, marine firefighting, even public safety education.

Frank Maiorana remembers clearly why he wanted to join Atlantic Steamer. “I wanted to join to fight fires, but also to be on the racing team, which I did,” Maiorana said. “We ended up winning state championships in 1964 and ’67. That was something I’ll never forget.”

Not every fire department had a fire tournament team. Everyone at Atlantic Steamer had to work to keep the team viable.

Some of the retirees, who are still members of Atlantic Steamer today, once traveled to fires on open fire trucks with running boards, which wasn’t always easy.

The trucks transported manual ladders, which required a team of firefighters to release them once they arrived on the scene. And firefighters needed to pump the water from the harbor.

Mike Fitzgerald has been with Atlantic Steamer for the past 43 years. He can still remember the days when firefighters didn’t have their own lockers, turnout coats and helmets. “All of the coats and helmets were loaded onto the trucks, and you hoped that a pair of the boots would fit you,” Fitzgerald said.

The fire company added an ambulance company in 1946, and later, emergency medical and ambulatory medical technician volunteers.

Over the years, Atlantic Steamer has experienced challenges.

In the 1970s, membership dropped, and many firefighters retired. The tournament team had to be disbanded, but the Atlantic Steamer Fire Company continued.

A firefighter’s experiences have changed over the years, with far fewer calls due to technological improvements, like smoke detectors and carbon monoxide monitors. Regardless, firefighters are still an integral part of the community.

The members of Atlantic Steamer believe they are right where they should be and wouldn’t have it any other way.
