The English were the first white settlers in Island Park. They raised hogs on the drier portions of the island, and coined its first name: Hog Island.

During the American Revolution, Hog Island was the site of multiple battles, including when the British warship “Galatea” pursued an American sloop through Jones Inlet, forcing it ashore on Hog Island, where the British captured most of its 52-man crew.

Peter Barnum purchased various lands on the South Shore of Long Island, which were then part of Queens County, amassing a fortune.

Developers Frank Lawson and William Austin sought to develop Barnum Island into the “Venice of the United States,” with canals running throughout. The plans were shelved, however, with the outbreak of World War I.

The Island Park-Long Beach Corporation purchased the lands of Barnum and Harbor islands, renaming the area Island Park, with the intention of turning it into a resort center. The corporation backfilled many of the low-lying marsh 21 areas with mud and established some of Island Park’s first utilities.

A United States Department of Housing and Urban Development audit reveals that 44 federally subsidized homes in Island Park intended for low-income families had been given to friends and family of politically connected officials.

A federal judge files a civil-rights suit against Island Park, alleging village officials excluded black and Hispanic applicants for federally subsidized housing intended for low-income residents, instead awarding them to friends and family.

Island Park schools introduce the option for middle school graduates to attend Long Beach High School.

The Long Island Rail Road laid its first track through the area in a line that ran from New York City to Long Beach.
Barnum’s widow, Sara Ann, purchased Hog Island and sold it to Queens County for $13,000, at which point it became the site of the county’s poor farm and a smallpox hospital. It was at this point that Hog Island was renamed to Barnum Island in her honor.

The Village of Island Park is founded, with a population of roughly 1,000 who had largely moved into the area during the building boom in the 1920s that occurred on the southern portion of the island. Harbor Island remained largely undeveloped, with only a handful of fishing shacks.

Jeremiah Hobart, minister of St. George’s Church in Hempstead, is gifted 100 acres of land near the south bay after running into financial problems. The hook-shaped piece of land gave Oceanside its first name: Christian Hook.
Christian Hook officially becomes a public school district called Hempstead District No. 11, with a one-room schoolhouse on the corner of Oceanside and Foxhurst roads.

Loyalists to King George in Christian Hook aided the British in their campaign to capture New York City in the Battle of Long Island, in which the British expelled Washington’s army from the area.

Charles Beall, a retired Wall Street Banker, dies on the grounds of his zoo on Mott Street, the largest privately owned one in the country. His death marked the closing of the site, and the animals were moved to Frank Buck’s Zoo in Massapequa.

The Baumann Bus Company is founded by Bob Baumann after securing a contract with the Oceanside School District. The buses originally transported children to his summer camp, which opened the year before.

Oceanside’s high school teams are dubbed the Sailors after cheerleader Joe DeBaun began wearing a sailor outfit to games. He would meet his future wife, Edyth, at a football game while she was cheering for the Woodmere team. He graduated in 1938.

Oceanside’s First United Methodist Church is constructed, with the Rev. R. Stanley Povey serving as its first full-time pastor.

The area’s first major railroad line opens, with the nearest stop to Oceanville in an area that became Rockville Centre. The development allowed for easier transport of oysters, but also brought a great deal of newcomers.

A group of 20 men form Oceanside’s first fire company, named Salamander, after a fire destroyed a major farmhouse. Shortly after in the same year, Columbia Engine Company would form.
Oceanville applies for a post office, with Lorenzo Davison, owner of a popular general store in the area, to serve as the neighborhood’s first postmaster. Because the name Oceanville was in use at two other post offices, the community’s name was changed to Oceanside.

Oceanside earns the grim distinction of being the site of Nassau County’s first murder after its incorporation earlier that year. It arose out of a dispute when a man named Thomas Nickerson refused to heed a 99 warning by resident Samuel Ousterman after he called on Ousterman’s maid.

Oct. Trick or Treat for Business in Island Park Now entering its seventh year, the Island Park Chamber of Commerce Trick or Treat for Business gives young Island Parkers a chance to amass fortunes of candy all while touring various shops around the neighborhood.

Oceanside’s Annual Turkey Shoot For more than 30 years now, Oceanside, through Oceanside Community Service, has gathered its Thanksgiving turkeys and distributed them to neighbors in need, and 2019 will be no different as hundreds of volunteers and students are set to gather at Oceanside High School and hand-deliver the food. As per tradition, no turkeys are actually shot at the Turkey Shoot.
Nov. Christmas and - Tree Dec. menorah lightings Celebrate the holiday season in Oceanside and Island Park at their annual Christmas tree and menorah lighting ceremonies, held at the Oceanside Triangle and the Village Green, respectively.
Dec. Trees for Troops at The Dees’ For 15 years, the family-owned Dees’ Nursery in Oceanside has sent Christmas trees abroad to U.S. troops serving overseas in a community extravaganza that draws hundreds, including a visit by Mr. and Mrs. Claus.
Feb. Kiwanis 20 Pancake Breakfast Each year, the Oceanside Kiwanis invites the larger Oceanside community to gear up for Super Bowl Sunday with its annual Pancake Breakfast. It’s one of the largest fundraisers for the club, which seeks to support children both locally and abroad.

With a population hovering around 4,000, Island Park is proof positive that big things come in small packages. As one of the communities hardest hit in Hurricane Sandy, Island Park has bounced back better than ever, with new and refurbished businesses and residential properties opening on a regular basis. So much is new and better. The local government has a new Village Hall after the previous one had to be demolished after the storm, and the unicorporated hamlets of Barnum and Harbor islands are seeing a major revival. Most important, residents have earned a new appreciation of their neighbors, knowing that no matter what, when hit with the worst, Island Parkers give their best. On Memorial Day, the village is festooned with flags, thanks to local merchants, and the parade winds through the community, greeted by flag-waving children. The village sponsors multiple recreational programs at Masone Beach, plus concerts and movies, and its gazebo can be rented for special occasions. Masone also features grills for cooking, a spray park, a playground, rentable beach chairs, a concession and merchandise stand, and much more: enough for a family to spend an entire summer Saturday or Sunday there. There has even been the occasional wedding. Over at the Town of Hempstead’s Shell Creek Park, there are tennis, baseball and additional playground facilities, rounding off the area’s recreational facility. In fall, Sacred Heart Church organizes its annual San Gennaro Festival, now in its 49th year, and the Island Park Chamber of Commerce sponsors a trick-ortreat event where little ghosts and goblins can “scare” local merchants. In winter, community members turn out again to light the village menorah and decorate a Christmas tree on the new Village Green located at the former Village Hall site. Island Park’s Civic Association holds its annual “Love Your Troops” dance in February, and proceeds support members of the military. And In spring, the Kiwanis Club organizes its pancake breakfast. Summer also brings the annual Jimi Gubelli 5k walk/run, which draws competitors from all over. Year-round there is a plethora of activities for people of all ages.

Situated in the south-central portion of Nassau County, Oceanside is a living, breathing nexus for visitors from surrounding communities, featuring a little bit of something for everyone. In addition to having a rich history dating back to the earliest days of settlement on Long Island, Oceanside features a supportive business community as well as a number of civic resources for residents of all ages. Every summer, the Oceanside Kiwanis and the library present poetry and prose readings at Oceanside’s Schoolhouse Green gazebo. And fun at the Green doesn’t stop when summer ends. During the winter, it shines bright with holiday decorations replete with Christmas carolers and a menorah lighting. Oceanside schools are also a major force in the hamlet, not only responsible for preparing the next generation of Oceansiders for adulthood, but also administering the Department of Community Affairs, which holds community programs, activities for seniors and after-school programs at the district’s facilities. The Kiwanis and Kiwanettes host holiday gatherings, pancake breakfasts and dinner dances — attended by hundreds — and the money raised is used to serve the community. Oceanside also features an active Chamber of Commerce, which welcomes new businesses with ribbon-cuttings, and honors community leaders at its annual dinner dance. It works on behalf of members to keep business in Oceanside thriving. Other civic groups include the Knights of Columbus, the Ladies Auxiliary, the Sons of Italy, the Rotary Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. For Oceanside’s houses of worship, there are places for adherants to a wide variety of religious denominations from Oceanside and surrounding communities to feel welcome. For the younger crowd, you’ll find Boy and Girl Scouts, Little League and Girls Fastpitch. The Oceanside Fire Department and its volunteers keep residents safe during fires and were first on the scene during Hurricane Sandy, making protection from natural disasters one of the department’s top priorities. An Oceanside treasure is the Marine Nature Study Area, which offers year-round educational opportunities for visitors, students and adults alike, and draws nature enthusiasts from all over. The award-winning South Nassau Communities Hospital hosts a wide range of informational meetings and health-related groups, which are open to the public. I
t started in 1970 as a simple fair with delicious Italian food in celebration of St. Anthony: the Catholic patron saint of lost items. But in the 50 intervening years, the event — held each time at St. Anthony’s Church in Oceanside — has ballooned into a massive community tradition, drawing more than 10,000 people of all faiths and ages. For years, the feast began on June 13 — the date of St. Anthony’s death in 1231. It usually lasts four days, with rides and festival prizes to boot. The volunteer-run extravaganza takes months of planning, according to John Fellin, who has organized the feast for the past eight years, and all proceeds go to the continuing of various ministries at the church, such as its senior and youth groups as well as parish outreach to the poor. Fellin said the church “had some big ideas” for the 50th feast, which was held from June 6 through 9, and it delivered on those ideas as thousands once again

flocked to the festival. The event began with a 5K run, and also included raffles, food, games, rides and live entertain-
ment. Plus, children fed goats, sheep and even a cow at the petting zoo. In addition, there was a special car show.

or four days every September, the streets around Sacred Heart Church in Island Park buzz with activity for the village’s Festival of San Gennaro, an annual event now entering its 49th year. The crowds of thousands that throng Long Beach Road for the event’s duration give those who gather in Manhattan’s Little Italy a run for their money, but the true measure of success? How much food is left over. By Sunday evening in 2017 — the last day of the festival — the volunteerrun vendors had run dry of chicken parmesan, eggplant and corn on the cob, according to festival spokeswoman Jeanne Morrone. In most circumstances, such a turn of events would normally be cause for worry, but Morrone remarked with a hint of pride, “There were people on Sunday asking for corn, and we had to turn them away.” Opening services for the festival

or some, it’s been described as a “life-or-death” contest, according Peter’s Clam Bar owner Butch Yamali, but for most it’s just good, clam-eating fun. Now in its sixth year, Peter’s Clam Eating Contest draws hundreds of local firefighters and competitors from all over — including some from out of state — to the small seafood eatery overlooking the bay, where contestants unbuckle their belts and ready to slurp thousands of clams — all for a good cause. In 2018, the contest netted roughly $10,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project, and on Aug. 11, 2019, all proceeds from the sixth annual event went to the Nassau County Firefighters Pipes and Drums. “It started because we wanted to show we’re still alive and kicking,” Yamali said, noting how badly damaged the area was in Hurricane Sandy. In the years since then, the event has become a community celebration, drawing firefighters from neighboring communities as well as celebrity competitive eaters such as Ed “Cookie” Jarvis and Takeru Kobayashi. The contest is divided into two rounds and multiple heats, with 12 contestants per heat. The first round comprises first responders, and is a more casual affair. “It’s a great opportunity to spark competition and friendly rivalry between the different fire departments,” said Anthony D’Esposito, a Hempstead Town councilman and a former chief of the Island Park department. But in the second round, in which the competitors could be anyone, the intensity is ratcheted up . While the competition is stiff, in a way, everyone’s a winner at the clam-eating contest, which is rapidly becoming regional event approaching Nathan’s Famous hotdog-eating contest in Coney Island.

D
id you know Oceanside is recognized as one of the centers of poetry in the New York metropolitan area? It’s all thanks to the Summer Gazebo Readings, which started as just a get together for some friends and their neighbors. Every summer since 2007, the Kiwanis Club of Oceanside hosts four published authors and poets each Monday evening at the belvedere on the lush Schoolhouse Green. Typically, the event features an eclectic mix of authors, both non-fiction and fiction, and poets who read from their works in front of large, friendly, receptive crowds. The only restriction is time — 10 minutes each, strictly enforced — the material read is never judged, as long it is ap-
propriate. (“Think basic cable, not HBO/Showtime,” coordinator Tony Iovino says.) Each year, the series attracts around 100 to 125 people each night, with highs of over 200 and lows of around 60. The Kiwanis Club also raises money from sponsors, between $6,000 to $8,000 each summer, which they use to send underprivileged children to Kamp Kiwanis upstate. “I’m very proud that we’re helping a lot of kids here in Oceanside and providing a very pleasant evening for the adults of the community,” Iovino said. “Come on down, bring your lawn chair and enjoy a different kind of evening.”

he Oceanside School District’s motto is, “Anchored together by purpose, passion and people.” The district includes Oceanside and parts of Baldwin and Rockville Centre. There are six elementary schools (grades 1-6) one middle school (grades 7-8), one high school (grades 9-12), one alternative high school and an administration building. School No. 6 houses pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and Castleton Academy. The district works with several advisory groups, including the Oceanside High School Band Parents Association, the Department of Community Activities Advisory Committee, the Buildings and Grounds Advisory Committee and the Parent Teachers Association. In 2018, the district celebrated the opening of its early childhood learning lab — made possible with a State Assembly grant — featuring a variety of hands-on learning activities. Additionally, the schools offer sports, plays, concerts, business education and more, and the district and the community work together to provide a variety of activities for residents of all ages.

The space opened in 2017. The school recreation department and PTA together host a Fall Family Fun Day and costume parade around Halloween. The district and the Faculty Association host Community Day in June. Additionally, Lincoln Orens students battle it out every year in their color wars as the Blue Team takes on the Gold Team at Sports Night.

he Island Park Fire Department has served the community since 1924. At the time, many homes were wood-fram bungalows, which posed serious fire risks. So, with its first $800, the company purchased a twowheeled, 40-gallon chemical tank, one dozen hand chemical extinguishers, three hand sirens and badges. There was one fire hydrant, at Long Beach Road and Warwick Road, but it had low water pressure. Because the community felt
the need for better fire company equipment, residents donated land and supplies. The current firehouse was built in 1951. In recent years, the Island Park Fire Department has welcomed a second new truck to replace one lost in Hurricane Sandy. T
ake a walk through Oceanside Park towards the Golf Club at Middle Bay and avert your eyes to the 52acre preserve nestled in between; listen closely, you might hear the soft chirps of the hundreds of birds within, fluttering from tree to tree. That’s Oceanside’s Marine Nature Study Area, a marine and estuarine ecosystem of animal, aquatic, insect and plant life. It is devoted to environmental education and natural history and houses more than 200 species of birds for yours and their viewing pleasure. The nature area — a salt marsh cut by tidal streams — opened in 1970, and is operated year-round by the Town of Hempstead’s Department of Conservation and Waterways. It’s divided into eight instruction zones that deal with different aspects of the marine environment; schools and summer camps from around Long Island frequent here to educate their students and members.
“It gives people, not just children, but people in general a sense of what the South Shore of Long Island, the natural part, was like before it was developed,” said Ned Black, former director of the MNSA who taught biology, earth science and marine science in Oceanside schools for 50 years. He pointed out in particular salt marshes like this are important because they produce an enormous amount of organic matter. “It’s a gem for Long Island, and of Oceanside,” Black noted, hoping more will visit. After the area was ravaged by hurricanes Sandy and Irene, the MNSA revitalized the space with a new boardwalk and restored trails. And its education facility is also soon getting some upgrades: handicapped accessibility, advanced technology, interactive classrooms and fish tanks. The place will be energyefficient, partly reliant on alternative energy, and built using natural materials, just like the land it sits on. There is no better time than now to visit.

Numbers to know Town of Hempstead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles, with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Democrat Laura Gillen — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
