Living in Oceanside O

riginally known as South Bay, the English government established a township in what is now Oceanside in 1674, called Christian Hook, basing the name on the predominant religious affiliation of residents in the area. Land development came rapidly, and oyster sales took their place as a dominant force, with the local business "Mott's Landing" becoming a favorite place to buy oysters. In terms of appeal to oyster customers, it was decided that "Oceanville" sounded better than "Christian Hook": it was "Oceanville Oysters" that sold, and in 1864, the new name became official. However, there was already an Oceanville in New York, so "Ocean Side," as two words, was adopted as the town's name in 1890. The name was condensed to "Oceanside" in 1918. The Oceanside Fire Department was established in 1902. Columbia Engine Co. #1, an old firehouse, still exists, and is located at the southwest corner of the triangle where Lincoln Avenue meets Long Beach Road. The last farm in the community was demolished in 1997. Oceanside's first school was built around 1838 on the northwest corner of Oceanside and Foxhurst Roads. It only had one room and an attic. The structure still stood as of 1960, but was moved and is now a private dwelling. The land where the school once stood is now known as the Schoolhouse Green, where many school events are held. Oceanside schools have adopted numerical names, 1 through 9. School #1 was razed in 1981. Today, Schools #2-5, 8 and 9E are elementary schools, School #6 is a kindergarten center, School #7 is a high school, and #9M serves as the middle school. School #9 bears the name of Walter Boardman. Presently, Phyllis Harrington is Superintendent of the school district, recently replacing Dr. Herb Brown who retired at the end of last year’s school year. Previous superintendents were Elliot Garfunkel, Walter S. Boardman and S. Taylor Johns. The Oceanside schools have become one of the major forces in the community. The school district not only runs the schools, but the Department of Community Affairs as well. The DOCA runs community programs, programs for seniors and after-school programs at the district’s facilities. The school district has become the center of community involvement in Oceanside; much like a village government or particular

Joe Pendergrast plays at the Oceanside Memorial Day Parade. religious institution is the center of activities in other communities. Over the years, there have been many famous and notable people who were either Oceanside natives or residents for a time. Included in that list are Glenn Gordon Caron: writer, director and producer; Steve Cohen, current general manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones and the Mets minor league executive of the year; Diane Farr, an actress and writer associated with such shows as “Rescue Me,” and “Numb3rs;” Jay Fielder, former NFL quarterback with several teams, including the New York Jets; Susie Fishbein, the author of several Kosher cookbooks; Stephen Friedman, chairman of the Presidents Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board; Art Heyman, standout college

and professional basketball player; Robert Iger, CEO of the Walt Disney Company; Norman Lent, a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives; Dennis Leonard, member of the Kansas City Royals baseball team’s Hall of Fame; Thomas Masaryk, considered the “Father of Czechoslovakia,” who lived in Oceanside during his exile in 1918; Astronaut Michael James Massimino; Al Trautwig, sportscaster; Ernie Vandeweghe, former New York Knicks star and the father of NBA player and executive Kiki Vandeweghe; and Harold Varmus, recipient of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology and medicine Today, Oceanside has become a magnet for the surrounding area with its attractive shops and restaurants.

Rebuilding a house after Hurricane Sandy.

I

n 2011 Hurricane Sandy damaged 95 percent of Island Park homes. Gone was the village fire house and all its equipment, students had to be housed in other districts while both Francis X. Hegarty elementary and Lincoln Orens middle school were repaired, businesses closed and hundreds of residents were displaced. But Island Park is a close-knit community and in the midst of its worst disaster the best of its people appeared. People began showing up at the firehouse with donations; food and water, clothing, toiletries, towels and blankets, diapers and almost anything else a neighbor might need. Terry Burton Reichel, whose husband is a fireman, voluntarily started sorting the items and putting the donations in a closet. “Then the closet was full,” she said, “Then the back of the fire house, and within days we had run out of room.” A second site was formed at the parking lot of the Island Park train station. There you could find all kinds of food. Pizza parlors from surrounding communities filled trucks and sent boxes of pizza, restaurants sent hot meals, and huge pots of soup. By the third day there was a veritable shopping center snaking

through the lot. People with a volunteer helper could follow a path through the food and supplies, clothes and bedding, even tools and equipment. Volunteers poured in, and with them came help. Buy the second day the National Guard was on site going door to door looking for anyone trapped in his or her home. Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Rosmarie Bovino, along with her principals and teachers walked the entire Island Park area. She wanted to be sure “The children had food,” and were warm and safe. Just one week after the storm a rare nor’easter formed and dumped almost a foot of snow on the already reeling area, and as temperatures dropped the effort to find everyone and get them to a warm safe place was redoubled. Firefighters from all over the country came with their equipment and began pumping out homes. The Red Cross, the Salvation Army, Samaritan’s Purse, Southern Baptists, FEGS, Catholic Charities, United Way, the list of helpers grew daily. Island Park Mayor James Ruzicka asked the Nassau County police for help and a dusk to dawn roadblock was set up. To enter you had to show proof that you belonged in Island Park, so there

was little looting and no violence. As the first winter passed, with the help of flood insurance, the Small Business Administration and aid from a newly formed organization, New York Rising, money began to flow, and homes were repaired. It cost $11 million to repair both schools. In order to prevent similar damage in the future people began to raise their homes two feet above the 100-year flood stage. As you go through Island Park today you will see homes in various stages of repair or replacement, some are already up, some are working on funding to elevate, some have been torn down and replaced and some are just repaired. Today the beaches have new playgrounds, swings and a splash park. Hegarty School is getting a new playground donated by Kiwanis. The old village hall has been torn down and a new one will be built on the site. The firehouse now boasts new equipment, one ladder truck, two engine trucks, and two ambulances. Most important, residents have a new appreciation of their neighbors, they know that no matter what happens, when hit with the worst, Island Park brings out its best.

History of Island Park

Sarah Baldwin Barnum

T

he Rechaweygh [Rockaway] and Mericoke [Merrick] Indians fished and hunted the Island Park area 350 years ago. The first English settlers erected their dwellings where the Incorporated Village of Island Park is today. English farmers raised hogs, which thrived on the marshy vegetation. Indians referred to this settlement as Hog’s Island, a name used for the next 200 years. Island Park covers a little over one and a half square miles. To the south is Reynolds Channel, and the City of Long Beach. To the east are Garrett Marsh, Shell Creek and Reynolds Channel. To the north lie Island Channel and Oceanside. Turn west to find Simmons Hassock, Hog Island Channel and Barnum Island Channel. Today the area is divided into three distinct jurisdictions: the Incorporated Village of Island Park to the south, Barnum Island to the east and north, and Harbor Isle to the west. Prior to 1899, what is now known as Nassau County was the eastern section of Queens County. World War II triggered the population explosion of the '50s and '60s that made Nassau the fastest growing county in the nation. Let’s clear up the folklore and myth of P. T. Barnum [the celebrated circus impresario] and P. C. Barnum [the wealthy clothing merchant]. In 1984 a diligent researcher, and Hofstra Professor of American Studies, Joann T. Krieg, separated the fiction from the facts. In her hoop-skirted dress Sarah Ann Baldwin Barnum [1814-1893] of East Meadow made her mark on 19th Century Long Island. Although she once owned Island Park, Barnum is barely a footnote in Long Island histories, partly due to the circumstance of her name. As the wife of Peter Crosby Barnum, she was — according to the custom of the times — known as Mrs. P. C. Barnum. The name could easily be confused with circus impresario P. T. Barnum, and it was. "The local folk have preferred folklore to history," noted Krieg, in refuting the legend that Barnum Island had once been the circus's winter headquarters. The legend was borrowed from the history of neighboring Long Beach, where developer

William Reynolds was said to have used Jumbo the circus elephant to haul planking from Coney Island's Dreamland for the boardwalk. Though Jumbo was already dead when Long Beach was developed in 1907, other elephants made the journey. "Every history of Island Park that I read credited the name Barnum Island to P. T. Barnum," recalls Hofstra historian Natalie Naylor. A local newspaper credited Barnum with giving the island to his ailing sister, Phoebe Ann Barnum, for a health cure. P. T. Barnum never had a sister Phoebe Ann. It was Sarah Ann Barnum who bought the island for use as an almshouse. Her obituary in the South Side Signal noted that she "exercised a greater influence in public affairs than almost any man in the township." Sarah Ann was married at 17 to a much older Samuel Carman, who died in 1842, leaving her with two young daughters. Four years later she married P. C. Barnum and had two or three more children. He commuted to his clothing stores in Manhattan, while she managed the family ranch. Barnum wanted to provide a humane home for the poor, then housed under deplorable conditions in Freeport. Hog Island seemed ideal for a poor farm in 1874, spacious enough for inmates to raise their own food. Barnum learned one night that a syndicate wanted to build a summer resort. She took her family carriage and drove alone through a snowstorm 10 miles to Oceanside where, at the edge of a creek, she shouted for help. The nearest neighbor, Albert Anderson, heard her shouts, shoved his rowboat into the stream and ferried her across to the island. [The Brooklyn Eagle account has her wading ashore.] Before persuaded the owners to sell 450 acres at a price slightly below $30 per acre. She advanced $13,360 of her own money, outwitting the speculators, who reportedly were offering $75,000. She transferred the island to the county for the same price she paid for it, and by a unanimous vote the island was given her name. As chairwoman of the Ladies Visiting Committee, she monitored the poor farm. It had a brief life. When Nassau seceded from Queens County in 1898, the farm and buildings were sold, netting $40,000, which Nassau used to construct its first county center in Garden City. "Mrs. Barnum's Useful Career Ended" in 1893, she was 79 the South Side Signal obituary reported. She is buried with her husband and three of her children in Hempstead's Greenfield Cemetery. The first mayor of Island Park was Charles Talbot. His residence is still standing at 67 Waterford Road. Some of the earliest structures of this period [1926] are still in existence: The Community Church on Newport Road that is now the Greek Church. The residence of W. E. Howard, the Superintendent of the Island Park Development Company, is situated on the triangular block on Ostend Road, Sagamore Road, and Nassau Lane. Since 1945 this dwelling was the residence of Chamber of Commerce Founder Armand D’Amato and father of former U. S. Senator Alfonse M. D’Amato. After the Depression, many of the summer bungalows were converted into all-year-round residences. Today the Island Park Community consists mainly of median income families who live in single unit owner-occupied residences. There are many advantages to living in Island Park. Masone Beach is maintained by the Incorporated Village and provides supervised waterfront activities for children all summer, and free concerts at the beach at night. Island Park is within walking distance to beaches and the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by parks and recreation areas.

want to take this opportunity to introduce you to our beautiful village. The Village of Island Park is undergoing a true renaissance rebirth. We highlight our summer at Masone Beach with its incredible sunsets, Splash Park, and Carolyne Previdi Memorial Playground and the playground at Mayor Landgraf Park. The beach houses recreational programs administered by both the Island Park School District and the Island Park Village. The Masone Beach is home to kayaks and paddle board, including the famous moonlight sail. Our concert series, which culminates in a renowned fireworks presentation Labor Day Weekend, is famous and well attended. The Village is home to growing new restaurant row on Long

Beach Road. A visit to Pop’s Seafood to the south, Peter’s Clam Bar to the north, and DaVinci’s in the center will be having you back for more! And who can drive past Pop’s Wines without being drawn in? We are business friendly – come and visit! We strive for intelligent growth and our efforts include retaining our present business structure. We are cognizant of constant residential reconstruction and endeavor to be user friendly. Oceanside Schools

Eric Dunetz/Herald

Members of Oceanside High School’s class of 2015 celebrated their graduation on June 26.

T

he Oceanside School District occupies 17.3 square miles and includes parts of Baldwin and Rockville Centre. There are six elementary schools that enroll students up to the sixth grade. There is one middle school (grades 7 and 8), and one senior high school. Adjacent to the district’s administrative offices is the Merle Avenue complex, which houses the school district’s Department of Community Activities and Oceanside Counseling Center. On the Merle grounds are the school district’s own botanical garden, tennis courts, a soccer field and a track. Christian Hook (later Oceanside) became school district No. 11 in 1833. The first school, which existed from 1842-1880, was located at the northwest corner of Oceanside and Foxhurst Roads. This school consisted of one room, with an attic. Later, the Town of Hempstead made Oceanside a “common school district” and in 1899 it became the Ocean Side Union Free School District Number 11. At that time the district serviced Atlantic Beach, Point Lookout, Island Park and Long Beach. In 1925, the Board of Education sought to obtain the status of a “Village Superintendency.” All of Nassau County was divided into two districts. Each district was headed by a superintendent who was responsible for reporting to the commissioner on matters in all districts under his jurisdiction. When these districts acquired a population in excess of 4,500, they could become independent units with their own superintendent. Oceanside was, at this time, following a pattern established in other communities such as Rockville Centre, Freeport and Baldwin. The district still maintains the form of administration it began over 65 years ago. Oceanside Board of Education (2015-16) President: Robert M. Island Park Schools

Students marched in the Island Park Memorial Day Parade.

U

ntil 1924, children who lived in Island Park traveled to Oceanside to go to school. The first local school was established in 1927, serving children in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades; total enrollment was 50 youngsters. Younger children were taught in a storefront on Long Beach Road. It was quickly found that these schools were too small. In the three years that passed between the decision to build the school and its actual construction, several new families moved to Island Park. And so, in 1928, construction of a new brick school was undertaken. Two years later it was dedicated and christened the Radcliffe Road School. There were five classrooms, a library room and offices. After World War II, Island Park, like other parts of the country, was caught in the suburban explosion. Many more families came to Island Park and new homes were built almost every day. Eight rooms and a gym were added to the Radcliffe School. Even this addition proved too little, and in 1954 an entire second story was added that held more classrooms, a science/home economics room, and an industrial arts room. There were 500 students. But by 1959 there were 982 students, and it was voted to purchase more land in the Barnum Island area for another school. The building would contain the Audobon School for children in K-6, and the Island Park Junior High School. In the late 1960s the Radcliffe Road School was renamed the Francis X. Hegarty School. The junior high was renamed the Lincoln Orens School. The Hegarty School educates students from pre-kindergarten through the third grade. The Lincoln Orens School is home to students from fourth to sixth grades, and middle school students in the seventh and eighth grades. Prior to 1967, Island Park high school students went to Oceanside High School. Then they attended West Hempstead High School. Students in Island Park now have the choice to attend either West Hempstead High School or Long Beach High School.

Parks & Recreation Marine Nature Study Area - 500 Slice Dr., Oceanside 11572 766-1580 - www.mnsa.webhop.org Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

At first glance the Oceanside/ Island Park communities appear to be full of nothing but busy shopping districts and typical suburban residential streets. But tucked away throughout the two communities are oases of serenity. Quiet waterways dot the area, and many homes boast backyard docks. In addition, there are special places where you can get back to basics. The Marine Nature Study Area is a 52-acre preserve of salt marshes, tidal creeks and uplands. The rich variety of plant and animal life make it an ideal learning center for all ages. The purpose of the area is to help foster an understanding of our local natural environment and to create an awareness of its benefits to us. The pristine habitat is bounded on the south by Middle Bay, on the east by Walls Point Creek, on the west by Bedell’s Creek, and on the north by a housing development. The habitat is a facility of the Town of Hempstead Department of Conservation and Waterways. The Study Area is a quiet and peaceful outdoor experience of invigorating air and breathtaking scenery, excellent for photography and observation. Since its official opening on Earth Day in April 1970, the Marine Nature Study Area has been visited by thousands of elementary school, high school and college students who have taken advantage of the free guided tour provided. There is also a selfguided booklet for the mile of boardwalks and trails. The Interpretive Center is two buildings of galleries of preserved nature, with marine life displays and salt water aquaria featuring local species. The study area is divided into eight instructional sections, each of which deals with a different aspect of the marine or estuarine environment. At each site visual aids are installed that describe a particu-

lar topic. Subjects covered include the tides, Long Island’s glacial geology, barrier beach and estuarine formations, ecology of the estuary, micro and macro algae, bird life, migration, the bay community, and barrier beach fauna and flora. In developing the study area, alteration of the salt marsh was minimal. A main path and several boardwalks were placed to enable access to the marsh while at the same time preventing damage to the fragile plants and animal life. A pond was created to attract migratory waterfowl, and a variety of plants that are beneficial to wildlife were introduced on the upland fringe. Over 200 species of birds have been sighted with 25 nesting species. The Marine Nature Study Area is open to the public year round 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday. It is located on Slice Drive in Oceanside. Shell Creek Park - 30 Vanderbilt Ave., Island Park, 11558 - 431-6440

Shell Creek Park was established 17 years ago, on Vanderbilt Avenue in Barnum Island. Open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. during the summer and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the winter, the park hosts a complete range of activities. For the athlete, a pair of basketball and paddleball courts are waiting. There are large playing fields for general use. The park lends out equipment such as footballs, jump ropes and knock-hockey tables. A fully equipped playground is there for the kids, as well as a spray pool for frolicking. There is fishing on the bay, off the bulkhead, where snapper, flounder, fluke and blackhead can be caught, depending on the season. Four well-kept professional tennis courts are available. Reservations must be made because these courts are in demand. Both the baseball fields and the tennis courts are illuminated at night for the dedicated athlete. There is no fee to use the park. Only proof of residency is required.

ISLAND PARK PARKS Masone Beach........................................................................................431-3033

Located on Waterford Road, Island Park. During the summer, Island Park’s Masone Beach on Waterford Road is ideal. This quiet little bay beach is perfect for those who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere. Snack and beverages are offered at the beach to patrons for refreshment. New to the Masone Beach is the Carolyne Previdi Playground and the Antoinette/Armand D’Amato Splash Park, where children can enjoy playing in cool, clear water during the hot summer months. Children also have the opportunity to participate in creative classes, activities and recreation. Families can also enjoy the Kaboom Playground located at the other

end of Waterford Road. Masone Beach hosts several events. The most popular is the Summer Concert Series. Residents and visitors enjoy musical entertainment at no personal expense. The series begins in the month of July and concludes with a dazzling Grucci Firework show in early September. Take the opportunity today to visit Landgraf Park at the north end of Waterford Road. The beautiful brand new playground there was built by members of our own community.

Town and County NASSAU COUNTY

TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD

Nassau County is governed by an elected Legislature. The Legislature is comprised of legislators from 19 districts. It includes an independent budget director who advises the Legislature on spending and revenue matters. The Legislature also enables residents to submit petitions for proposed new laws that legislators are obligated to consider. The 19 county legislators serve two-year terms. The county executive — currently Republican Edward Mangano — serves a four-year term and is the chief administrator. Nassau also has an elected comptroller, currently George Maragos, a district attorney, Madeline Singas, and a county clerk, Maureen O'Connell.

The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of approximately 760,000 people. Within the Town there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Under the current system, the Town of Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Kate Murray — and a six-member Town Council. The six members of the council are elected from one of six councilmatic districts. The supervisor has a twoyear term, and the council members have a four-year term of office. The supervisor serves as the chief executive officer of town government. She presides over all town board meetings, directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments, employing just more than 2,100 people. As the chief financial officer of the township, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
