2017-2018

Hello, neighbors! We are proud to present our annual Oceanside/Island Park Guide, a special supplement to the Oceanside/Island Park Herald. Those of us who live here know that Oceanside and Island Park are wonderful places. In this compact book, you’ll find many of the organizations and institutions that make them so very special. The purpose of the Guide is to expand upon what the Herald does each week: describe and celebrate this unique community and its many services and organizations. For newcomers, the Guide provides a comprehensive look at all the community has to offer. Longtime residents and business leaders will also find it a handy reference. We hope you enjoy this year’s Guide. We’ve tried to make it the best guide to Oceanside and Island Park ever published. We also hope you enjoy reading the Oceanside/Island Park Herald 52 weeks a year. And no matter how far from home you find yourself, you can read the Herald at www.LIHerald.com. At our website, you can access the latest stories and special coverage of breaking news, including election results.

living in Oceanside Oceanside is a vibrant community with attractive shops and restaurants, making it a magnet for people from surrounding areas. The land where the first Oceanside school once stood is now known as the Schoolhouse Green, and is the site of many community activities. Every summer the Oceanside Kiwanis and the library present poetry and prose readings at the Green’s gazebo. Barbecues also take place there. In winter, the gazebo is decorated for the holidays. Community members gather for the annual menorah lighting and the Green shines with a decorated Christmas tree while student choirs sing holiday songs around the gazebo. Oceanside schools are a major force in the community. The school district not only runs the schools, but also the Department of Community Affairs. DOCA holds community programs, activities for seniors and after-school programs at the district’s facilities. There are also many active civic groups in Oceanside. The Kiwanis and Kiwanettes hold holiday gatherings, pancake breakfasts and dinner dances. The money raised is used to serve the community. There is an active Chamber of Commerce, which welcomes new businesses with ribbon-cuttings and celebrations, and honors community leaders at its annual dinner dance. It works on behalf of members to keep the Oceanside business thriving, and this August the community saw the opening of a new Costco. Additionally, Oceanside’s civic association brings the government and the community together through lively meetings and discussions about community needs. Other groups include the Knights of Columbus, Sons of Italy and the Rotary Club. The Oceanside Chorale meets

once a week at the Merle Avenue School. There is a wide variety of religious denominations in Oceanside and surrounding communities. For the younger crowd, you’ll find Boy and Girl Scouts, Little League and Girls Fastpitch. The Oceanside Fire Department and its volunteers has three hose companies, one engine company and one truck company. Keeping residents safe during fires and natural disasters is the department’s top priority. The department gives demonstrations and holds discussions, information sessions and inspections to keep Oceanside residents safe. The award-winning South Nassau Communities Hospital hosts a wide range of informational meetings and health-related groups, which are open to the public. No matter what your interest, you will find Oceanside a welcoming community.

living in Island Park It’s been five years since Hurricane Sandy, and Island Park is a rebuilt community. So much is new and better. There are new stores and homes, and even the old village hall was torn down and a new one is in the works. The firehouse boasts new equipment: one ladder truck, two engine trucks and two ambulances, plus a rebuilt and renovated firehouse. Most important, residents have a new appreciation of their neighbors. They know that no matter what happens, when hit with the worst, Island Park residents give their best. On Memorial Day, the village is festooned with flags, thanks to local merchants, and the Parade winds through the community, greeted by flag waving children. The village sponsors a recreational program at Masone Beach, plus concerts and movies. The gazebo at the beach can be rented for special occasions and there are grills for cooking in summer so families, friends and local civic organizations can hold barbecues. Many of those civic events, on the beach or at the gazebo, are open to the public. There are even weddings at Masone. The village boasts a splash park and several playgrounds, all open to

the public, plus bocce ball and handball courts. Tennis, baseball and another splash park are found at the Town of Hempstead’s Shell Creek Park. In fall, Sacred Heart Church organizes its annual San Gennaro Festival, now in its 47th year, and the Island Park Chamber of Commerce sponsors a trick-or-treat event where little ghosts and goblins can “scare” local merchants. Additionally, October is the chamber’s annual dinner dance. Community members turn out again to light the village menorah and decorate a Christmas tree sponsored by the Island Park Business and Residential Chamber, as well as the Caroline Previdi Tree, located next to a playground named in her honor. It would not be the same without the annual visit from Santa to the firehouse. Island Park’s civic association holds the annual “Love Your Troops” dance in February. Proceeds support members of the military. In spring, the IBRC holds its annual dinner dance, and the Kiwanis Club organizes a pancake breakfast. Summer brings the annual Jimi Gubelli 5k walk/run. Year-round there is a plethora of activities for people of all ages.

ith more than 100 years of service, the Oceanside Fire Department stands ready to help at all hours. The brave volunteer men and women spring into action to extinguish fires, rescue swimmers and boaters, and remove wildlife from storm drains — all without pay other than the gratitude of the community. Columbia Engine Company No.1 was organized in 1902, and a hand-or horse-drawn double-tank engine was purchased in 1903. In 1913, the company became the first on Long Island to have a motorized piece of equipment with the purchase of a Matthewson Hose Wagon.

FIRE Departments Island Park

The Island Park Fire Department has served the community since 1924. At the time, many homes were wood-fram bungalows, which posed serious fire risks. So, with its first $800, the company purchased a two wheeled, 40-gallon chemical tank, one dozen hand chemical extinguishers, three hand sirens and badges. There was one fire hydrant, at Long Beach Road and Warwick Road, but it had low water pressure. Because the community felt the need for better fire company equipment, residents donated land and supplies. The current firehouse was built in 1951. In recent years, the Island Park Fire Department has welcomed a second new truck to replace one lost in Hurricane Sandy.

sland Park’s two public elementary schools, Francis X. Hegarty and Lincoln Orens, serve grades kindergarten to eight. High school students have the choice to attend either West Hempstead or Long Beach high schools. In 2016, School Superintendent Dr. Rosmarie Bovino announced that Sandy-related repairs had been completed. Island Park is one of only four districts that were awarded a Smart Schools Technology Grant from the State Education Bond Act. The grant is being used to build a new z-space 3D virtual exploration lab for science, complete with 3D printers in the Lincoln Orens School. The school recreation department and PTA together host a Fall Family Fun Day and costume parade around Halloween. The district and the Faculty Association host Community Day in June. Additionally, Lincoln Orens students battle it out every year as the Blue Team takes on the Gold Team at Sports Night.

he Oceanside School District’s motto is “Anchored together by purpose, passion and people.” The district includes Oceanside and parts of Baldwin and Rockville Centre. There are six elementary schools (grades 1-6) one middle school (grades 7-8), one high school (grades 9-12), one alternative high school and an administration building. School No. 6 houses pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and Castleton Academy. The district works with several advisory groups, including the Oceanside High School Band Parents Association, the Department of Community Activities Advisory Committee, the Buildings and Grounds Advisory Committee and the Parent Teachers Association. Many of the district’s teachers have been deemed “highly qualified” according to State Education Department standards, and the curriculum, support materials and evaluation strategies have been designed to meet the students needs. The schools offer sports, plays, concerts and more and the district and the community work together to provide a variety of activities.

Out and About

Oceanside is on a peninsula, and Island Park is actually an archipelago of several islands, so it should be no surprise that so many local activities involve the ocean and bays. There are a number of activities for water lovers, from stand-up paddleboarding to kayaking and boating. No matter where you go, there is a beach or park close by. The Marine Nature Study Area is a 52-acre preserve of salt marshes, tidal creeks and uplands. The rich variety of plant and animal life makes it an ideal learning center for all ages. It has been visited by thousands of elementary, high school and college students who have taken advantage of the freeguided tour. There is also a self-guided booklet for the mile of boardwalks and trails. The Interpretive Center comprises two buildings with galleries of preserved nature, marine life and salt-water aquaria featuring local species. The study area is open to the public yearround from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. It is on Slice Drive in Oceanside. Shell Creek Park was established 18 years ago, on Vanderbilt Avenue on Barnum Island. It is open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. during the summer and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the winter. The park hosts a wide range of activities. For the athlete, a pair of basketball and paddleball courts await. Additionally there are large playing fields for general use, and the park lends out equipment such as footballs, jump ropes and knock-hockey tables. A fully equipped playground is there for children, as well as a spray pool for frolicking. There is fishing on the bay, off the bulkhead, where snapper, flounder, fluke and black-

head can be caught, depending on the season. Four well-kept professional tennis courts are available as well, but reservations must be made because these courts are in demand. Both the baseball fields and the tennis courts are illuminated at night for the dedicated athlete. There is no fee to use the park. Only proof of residency is required. Oceanside Park is a paradise for amateur athletes. Oceanside’s Little League, Sally League and the Babe Ruth League all play on the fields, plus organized softball. There is also a rink for roller hockey, as well as handball, game tables, horseshoes, picnic tables, play areas, soccer and tennis. There is no fee to use the park facilities, and they are illuminated at night. They also offer arts and crafts, a walking/jogging program and puppet and mime shows. The park is open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The Oceanside Pool features diving, wading and swimming areas. Teams and lessons are offered as well. Pool season passes are available for individuals and families, but the cost varies according to residency, and special rates are offered to the disabled as well as senior citizens. The pool, also illuminated at night, is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Oceanside Schoolhouse Green is on the site of the old School No. 1 property. Since Oct. 12, 2000, the property has been transformed from an abandoned school site into what has increasingly becoming a vital, living center of the Oceanside community. Many varieties of trees have been planted, and the green’s gazebo is the sight of a summer outdoor reading program sponsored by the Oceanside Kiwanis Club. Island Park’s Masone Beach on Waterford Road is a quiet little bay beach, perfect

for those who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere. Snacks and beverages are available for the beach’s patrons, and new to Masone are the Caroline Previdi Playground and the Antoinette/Armand D’Amato Splash Park, where children can enjoy playing in cool, refreshing water during summer. Children also have the opportunity to participate in creative classes, activities and recreation. Masone also hosts several summer events as well. The most popular is the Summer Concert Series where residents and visitors can enjoy musical entertainment. The series begins in July and concludes with a dazzling Grucci Fireworks show in early September. Additionally, the village hosts a weekly movie night. All events are free and open to the public. Just bring a lawn chair and a friend. Residents can also take advantage of Landgraf Park at the north end of Waterford

Road, home of the new Kaboom Playground. And there is a small beach

on Harbor Isle, which offers shuffleboard and a playground.

Town of hempsTead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Anthony Santino — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. towN of Hempstead
