From heartfelt memorials to family-friendly festivals, each tradition brings neighbors together and showcases the best of our towns. Mark your calendars — here are some of the top annual events you won’t want to miss.

Zachary Allen Memorial Tournament Every July

The Zachary Allen Memorial Tournament — affectionately called “The Zallen Classic” — is one of Oceanside’s most beloved traditions. Held each summer at Oceanside Park, this high-spirited softball event honors the memory of Zachary “Zallen” Allen, an OHS Melissa Baptiste/Herald graduate and passionate The annual Zachary Allen Memorial Softball Classic winning team, Team OF Squad, included athlete who died in a tragic Zachary Camileri, Jake Ducorsky, Johnny Fitzsimmons, Alex Ducorsky, Thomas Goetz, Jake Manyin, Rob Barnett, Sean Regan, Jake Lombardo, Justin Fitzsimmons and Aidan Barry. car accident in 2022.

Started by Zach’s close friend Alex Ducorsky in 2023, the tournament has grown into a vibrant tribute drawing 12 teams, more than 150 players, and hundreds of spectators. With food trucks, raffles, and live music by WBAB, the event has raised thousands for a scholarship awarded to Oceanside High School students who embody Zach’s drive, kindness, and commitment to community.

Each team has a personal connection to Zach — and the games are as emotional as they are competitive.“Even if you didn’t know him,” one attendee said,“being at the tournament shows you who he was.”

San Gennaro Feast Early September

Now in its 55th year, the San Gennaro Feast in Island Park is a celebration of Italian heritage, faith, and family fun. Hosted by Sacred Heart Church, this four-day festival fills the streets with delicious aromas — from sausage and peppers to fresh cannolis — and echoes of live music and carnival rides.

The procession of the Saint Gennaro statue remains a spiritual centerpiece, while children enjoy classics like the carousel and Ferris wheel.Volunteer-powered and community-supported, the festival welcomes residents and visitors from across Long Island for a taste of tradition.

Oceanside Fall Festival Late September/October

Launched in 2023 by Oceanside Unified, the Oceanside Fall Festival has quickly become a community favorite. Held in Parking Field 6 between Weidner and Perkins avenues, it features entertainment, local vendors, carnival games, and kid-friendly attractions like rock climbing and axe throwing.

Even last year’s rain couldn’t keep residents away. Now entering its third year, the festival continues to grow, thanks to support from organizations like the Oceanside Kiwanis,VFW Post 5199 and local businesses. Organizers have already floated plans for expanding the event into a two-day celebration.

With food trucks, pickle sandwiches (courtesy of viral sensation Seven Brothers), and the sounds of local bands, this is a fall must-do.

OceanCon

October or November Oceanside Library has leveled up its programming with OceanCon. Now an annual fall classic entering its eighth year, it celebrates comics, cosplay and pop culture. Held during the library’s reopening festivities last year, the seventh edition of OceanCon transformed the library into a multiverse of fandom — drawing crowds of superhero fans, gamers and Holden Leeds/Herald anime lovers.

Spidermen, wizards and princesses roam the halls during cosplay contests and photo ops, while attendees enjoy gaming tournaments and interactive exhibits. Family-friendly and free, it’s a can’t-miss for anyone who loves comics or just wants to see the library in a whole new light.

Summer Gazebo Readings Monday nights, June–August

Running strong since 2007, the Summer Gazebo Readings are a literary tradition unlike any other. Hosted by the Oceanside Kiwanis Club and the Oceanside Library, the series brings published poets and authors from throughout the region to Tim Baker/Herald read original works beneath the Keith Pearsall reads a portion of the Declaration of Independence at the annual Fourth of stars.

Held Monday evenings at 7 p.m., readings offer a peaceful, enriching way to wind down the day. Attendees bring lawn chairs, sip free refreshments and enjoy work from acclaimed writers like Oklahoma poet laureate Nathan Brown and Pulitzer-nominated playwright Richard Vetere. In case of rain, the readings move online via Zoom — proving that not even weather can stop the words. Around the Fourth of July, the readings take on a patriotic theme as the Oceanside Kiwanis Club and Oceanside Library host the annual July 4th Barbecue on the Schoolhouse Green.

Organizer Tony Iovino calls Oceanside “one of the poetry centers of the New York metro area,” and with audiences ranging from 60 to 200 people, it’s easy to see why.

Island Park Greek Festival Summer

Hosted by the Greek Orthodox community, Island Park's Greek Festival is a joyful celebration of Hellenic culture and cuisine.

Oceanside School District: Where Tradition Meets Innovation • Roller Skating Show (March) Now in its 60th year, this multigenerational Oceanside tradition, with the collaboration with Oceanside Kiwanis and Department of Community Activities, transforms the Merle Avenue School gym into a stage of coordinated routines by students ages four and up — many taught by instructors who once skated in the show themselves.

• Community Egg Hunt (April) Hosted in the same gym, this spring event draws hundreds of families for cookie decorating, photos with the Easter Bunny, and egg hunts, all supported by student volunteers from Key Club, K-Kids and Builders Club and organized with Oceanside Kiwanis and D.O.CA.

• Spotlight on the Stars (Spring) A standout of the district’s award-winning theater program, this inclusive production brings general and special education students together in a showcase of talent and teamwork.

• Broadway Career Trip: A Wonderful World (February) Organized by Work-Based Learning Coordinator Iris Wiener, this Black History Month trip connects high school students with Broadway professionals to explore arts careers and Louis Armstrong’s legacy.

Oceanside Library: A Modern Beacon of Community and Creativity Following a $33.5 million renovation completed in 2024, the Oceanside Library is now one of the most dynamic public spaces on Long Island.

The expanded facility includes a 165-seat theater, Discovery STEM Lab, a teaching kitchen, also the Whisk & Brush art studio, which offers a creative space where residents record podcasts, paint and cook.

hether you’re a birdwatcher, athlete or just need a peaceful place to walk, Oceanside and Island Park offer green spaces where community pride, nature and recreation come together beautifully. These three outdoor staples are more than just parks — they’re gathering places, learning spaces and pockets of environmental wonder.

Marine Nature Study Area 500 Slice Drive, Oceanside

It’s easy to forget you’re in suburbia when walking the quiet trails of the Marine Nature Study Area, a 52-acre salt marsh preserve that has been one of Long Island’s best-kept secrets since Earth Day 1970.

Managed by conservation biologist Michael Farina since 2008, the preserve is a living classroom and wildlife sanctuary where over 280 species of birds and 150 species of fish call home. Regular visitors might catch glimpses of majestic Ospreys, Great Horned Owls and even the occasional Bald Eagle, while birdhouses for Tree Swallows help naturally keep mosquitoes away — no pesticides needed.

“The salt marsh is one of the most productive ecosystems in the world,” Farina says.“It’s second only to tropical rainforests in terms of food and energy production.”

From elementary school groups to university researchers, students come here — free of charge — to learn about native species, coastal ecology and sustainable conservation. Locals also take ownership, with scout troops planting milkweed to attract monarch butterflies, and photographers capturing sunrise reflections in the glassy water.

During the pandemic, the preserve became a healing space for many. Accessible, serene and vital to the region’s biodiversity, the Marine Nature Study Area is not just a park — it’s Oceanside’s living heartbeat.

The park is home to Oceanside United Soccer Club’s intramural and travel leagues, hosting weekly games and training for players ages 3 to 18. The turf soccer field bustles with activity yearround, including the Bob Schrager Memorial Tournament every Labor Day weekend.

Beyond sports, the park is bursting with features: Baseball and softball diamonds Tennis, handball and paddleball courts Public swimming pool and diving area Playgrounds, picnic areas, and game tables Fenced dog run and scenic multi-use walking paths And thanks to the vision of Eagle Scout Kilian McNichol, the park now proudly displays a vibrant mural postcard reading “Oceanside,” with each letter containing scenes from the town — highlighting everything from its beach access to the Marine Nature Study Area itself. Installed next to the decorative boat at the pool entrance, Kilian’s mural adds both beauty and local pride.

Across the water in Island Park, Shell Creek Park plays host to youth baseball, shuffleboard matches and community events big and small. It’s the home field for Island Park Little League, where every spring kicks off with an opening day parade, beginning at Lincoln Orens Middle School and ending with the ceremonial first pitch on the diamond.

Mount Sinai South Nassau is Improving Health Care on the South Shore The new Fennessy Family Emergency Department at Mount Sinai South Nassau doubles the size of our previous emergency department, offering 54 private exam rooms with clear lines of sight for physicians, nurses, and support staff. Our new emergency department also offers a separate triage area, dedicated areas for children and behavioral health patients, and has been designed to reduce wait times and improve patient outcomes.

The Fennessy Family Emergency Department is located within the new Feil Family Pavilion, opening later this year, which will have 40 new critical care suites and nine new operating rooms, designed to support the most complex surgeries on the South Shore.
