a message from Ira reIter, PresIdent merrIck chamber of commerce Dear Merrick Community Members,

A

s President of the Merrick Chamber of Commerce, I am honored to represent an organization that serves as the heartbeat of our local business community. Our mission remains steadfast: to champion the interests of Merrick's businesses while enhancing the vibrant community we all call home. Throughout the past year, we've worked tirelessly to create meaningful connections between businesses and Ira reIter residents, believing that a strong local economy benefits Merrick everyone. By fostering these relationships, we've helped Chamber of Commerce businesses thrive while ensuring our community remains a desirable place to live, work and raise families. Our calendar of community events continues to bring neighbors together and create lasting memories. The Annual Kids Fest, April 25-27, delights our youngest residents with exciting rides, creative crafts and engaging activities for the whole family. Our signature Street Festival, Oct. 24-26, transforms our town into a celebration of local culture, featuring entertainment, food vendors and artisans showcasing their talents. The beloved Halloween Parade, Nov. 1, remains a cherished tradition that displays the creativity and spirit of our community's children. Education remains a cornerstone of our commitment to Merrick's future. We take great pride in our scholarship program, which supports deserving graduates from all three high schools serving our community. These scholarships represent our investment in the next generation of leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals who will shape Merrick's tomorrow. Looking forward to the winter, we invite families to join us for our festive holiday celebrations. Our Visit with Santa at the Merrick Clubhouse, Dec. 6, creates magical moments for children, while our Annual Tree and Menorah Lighting ceremony at Broadcast Plaz, Dec. 7, brings our community together in a spirit of unity and celebration. Through our dedicated fundraising efforts, we also remain committed to illuminating Merrick with beautiful holiday lights that transform our streets into a winter wonderland for residents and visitors alike. These initiatives represent just a glimpse of our ongoing efforts to nurture both our business environment and community spirit. I encourage all residents to discover the exceptional products and services offered by our local businesses. And to those businesses not yet part of our Chamber family, I extend a personal invitation to join us in our mission to make Merrick an even more remarkable place to live and work. Together, we continue to build on Merrick's legacy as a community of connection, opportunity and shared prosperity. Sincerely, Ira Reiter President

TOP things to do

at Norman J. Levy Park & Preserve

By Jordan Vallone

N

orman J. Levy Park & Preserve is a hidden gem in Merrick offering stunning views, unique wildlife and a variety of outdoor activities. The park, which spans over 50 acres, was built on a former landfill and transformed into a beautiful nature preserve that now serves as a sanctuary for both wildlife and visitors looking to enjoy the outdoors. Opened in 2000, it features scenic trails, a fishing pier and even a herd of Nigerian dwarf goats that help maintain the landscape. Named after the late New York State Sen. Norman J. Levy, the preserve is dedicated to environmental conservation and community recreation.

Here’s how you can spend a day at the park:

Hike the scenic trails and enjoy panoramic views

Tim Baker/Herald file

The park’s well-maintained hiking trails take visitors through a variety of landscapes, including wooded areas, open grasslands, and salt marshes. The trails lead to one of the highest points in Nassau County — colloquially referred to as “Merrick Mountain” —where you can take in breathtaking views of the South Shore, Jones Beach, and even the Manhattan skyline on a clear day. The hike is suitable for all ages and offers benches along the way for those who want to take in the peaceful surroundings.

Nigerian dwarf

One of the park’s most unique and beloved features is its herd of Nigerian dwarf goats. These goats are used for natural landscaping, helping to control invasive plant species by grazing.Visitors can often spot them in their designated area or see them in action with park staff. It’s a fun and educational experience for families, as the goats play an important role in maintaining the preserve’s ecosystem. Tim Baker/Herald file And it’s not just goats — the preserve is also the home to sheep as well. Just two summers back, both colonies welcomed its newest members: sheep named Socks and Boots, and goats Clay, Priscilla, Mia, Sweetie, and Latte. The goats and sheep live together and share the duties of “natural lawnmowers,” chomping on weeds and grass .

Whether you're an experienced fisherman or just looking for a relaxing place to cast a line, the pier is a favorite among visitors who appreciate the park’s coastal setting.

Observe

wildlife and birdwatching

Tim Baker/Herald file

As a protected nature preserve, the park is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, rabbits and many bird species such as osprey and egrets. Birdwatchers will find plenty of opportunities to spot native and migratory birds throughout the year. The salt marshes provide a vital habitat for marine and bird life, making the park an excellent location for nature photography and quiet wildlife observation.

Kayak along

the waterways

The park provides access to the surrounding waterways, making it a popular destination for kayaking along the South Shore Blueway. The blueway trail is a safe, legal Scott Brinton/Herald file network of water access points for human-powered boats and sail craft, allowing people to experience Long Island’s South Shore, while protecting wildlife and their habitats, as well as the safety of trail users. Paddlers out of Levy can explore the scenic inlets and marshes, getting a unique perspective of the preserve from the water. While the park itself does not rent kayaks, visitors can bring their own or check with nearby rental options. Kayaking through the peaceful waters is a great way to experience the beauty of Long Island’s South Shore ecosystem up close. 22

We need your participation to do our job, so we offer you — our readers and partners — a reminder of how and when to reach us. For news of upcoming events sponsored by civic, service, religious or community organizations, the deadline is 10 a.m. the Friday before publication. We accept obituaries and Neighbors in the News items, including awards, honors, births, graduations, marriages and promotions. These items are printed at no charge to you. We value your opinions, and provide a forum for them in our popular Letters to the Editor space. Letters are accepted until 5 p.m. the Friday before publication, and should be no more than 350 words.
