Welcome to the Massapequa Community Guide your comprehensive resource for everything that makes the Massapequas such a dynamic, welcoming and thriving place to call home.

We are pleased to present this special annual supplement to the Massapequa Herald Post a publication designed to celebrate, inform and connect with our communities. Whether you’re a lifelong resident or just settling in, this guide is your passport to all things local.

Inside you’ll find a curated snapshot of what makes Massapequa so special:

• Scenic parks and green spaces

• Vibrant public libraries

• Unmissable community events

This year’s cover celebrates Massapequa Park’s annual Fall Festival, held Oct. 5 a day that brought more than 2,000 residents and visitors to the heart of the village for family fun, laughter and local pride.

The Fall Festival is just one example of how Massapequa and Massapequa Park, and its many organizations, come together year after year to keep community life vibrant.

The Kiwanis Club of Massapequa brings neighbors together through its annual Bocce Tournament and Golf Outing, events that raise both funds and spirits. The Massapequa Chamber of Commerce works tirelessly to host beloved traditions including the Halloween Spooktacular, community food and toy drives, and Massapequa Park’s cherished tree lighting ceremony.

Equally dedicated are the volunteers of the Historical Society of the Massapequas, who preserve and promote the community’s proud past. From their Strawberry and Apple Festivals to the annual holiday calendar featuring local photography, the Society’s work helps keep Massapequa’s story alive while their ongoing restoration of the historic complex on Merrick Road stands as a testament to that legacy.

Of course, none of these efforts could succeed without the support of the greater Massapequa community. This guide was created to help you connect with the organizations that make a difference every day and to show how you can lend your time, talent or resources to keep Massapequa thriving.

This guide is brought to you in partnership with the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce, and we’re honored to serve as the chamber’s official publication. We hope you find the Massapequa Community Guide both useful and inspiring and we thank you for making the Masspequa Herald Post part of your week, every week.

Sincerely,

P.S. If you're not currently receiving the Massapequa Herald Post by mail each week, please help keep quality local journalism alive in your community by subscribing. See our ad on Page 22 for subscription information, or find us online at LIHerald.com/ subscribe, or call (516) 569-4000, ext. 7.

From restaurants and shops to healthcare, schools and professional services, our members truly represent the best of what our hometown has to offer.

That hometown pride is what sets our community apart, and it’s what keeps us moving forward together. Local treasures: exploring

hidden gems

It’s often said that life’s greatest treasures don’t require a passport or plane ticket — sometimes, they’re right in your own backyard. That holds true in Massapequa, where history, creativity and small-town charm converge. Here’s a look at some of the community’s lesser known but meaningful places that celebrate both its past and present.

Towers of Freedom Military Monument

4990 Merrick Road, Massapequa

A community effort, started by Massapequa residents Tom Smith, retired NYPD, and Frank Haskell, retired FDNY, brought to life the Towers of Freedom Military Monument at John Burns Park. It was conceived, designed, built and paid for entirely through local contributions and has become a focal point in Massapequa, particularly on 9/11 when services are held there.

Carolyn James/Herald Towers of Freedom Military Monument, built entirely with private contributions, is a focal point in Massapequa.

Firemen’s Bell Tower

Sunrise Highway and Park Boulevard, Massapequa Park

The bell tower rises on the North side of Sunrise Highway and Park Boulevard. But don’t ask for whom the bell tolls; in Massapequa Park it tolls for volunteer firefighters.

The bell, atop the red tower at the corner of Sunrise Highway and Park Boulevard in Massapequa Park, was built during the administration of Mayor Robert Thompson in the mid 1970s. It was designed by local architect Jan Sera and built to recognize volunteer firefighters.

The bell tower is located near the Massapequa Fire monument, which depicts two Massapequa firefighters: Jim Kinnelly and Tommy Cox. That was installed in July 2001, two months before 9/11.

Since then, the fire department has installed another monument depicting a firefighter carrying a baby. The design was taken from a photograph by local photographer Ed Cox. Listed on the monuments are the names of all those who died on 9/11 or from 9/11 related illnesses, including that of Jim Kinnelly.

Annie Oakley’s cabin

4990 Merrick Road, Massapequa Park (516) 797-4128

Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department

The rustic Burns Park Cabin has served as a longtime gathering space for scout troops, civic meetings and family events. Built and maintained by the Massapequa Kiwanis Club, the cabin sits on land once frequented by famed sharpshooter Annie Oakley, whose family lived in the cabin in the early 1900s. Oakely gave shooting lessons on the grounds.

While the log-style structure wasn’t rebuilt until the mid-20th century, it honors that legacy by offering a lodge-like setting for community programs and celebrations.

Massapequa Preserve

4990 Merrick Road, Massapequa Park (516) 797-4128

Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department

Stretching across 400 acres, the Massapequa Preserve is one of Long Island’s most cherished natural sanctuaries. The preserve features scenic trails for walking, biking and birdwatching, as well as freshwater streams and three ponds that flow south to Massapequa Cove. It is home to diverse wildlife and offers a tranquil retreat for fishing, jogging or quiet reflection. For many residents, the preserve is a vital green space and a cherished escape from the bustle of daily life.

Delancey Floyd Jones Library

4755 Merrick Road, Massapequa (516) 799-2023

Massapequa Historical Society

Built in 1896, the Delancey Floyd ones Library stands on the grounds of Grace Church and was once Massapequa’s first public library. Its Victorian-style architecture made it a local landmark. Though library services have since moved, the building has been preserved and now serves as a cultural space for community events, meetings and programs — maintaining its legacy as a center of learning and gathering.

Downtown Massapequa Park offers a blend of smalltown charm and community spirit. Tree-lined streets are home to local shops, cafés and restaurants, all within walking distance of the Massapequa Preserve. Nearby Brady Park features sports fields, playgrounds and seasonal events, including the ever-popular Breakfast at Brady Park marking the beginning of summer. The area is also easily accessible via the Long Island Rail Road, making it both a local favorite and a commuter-friendly destination.

Fort Massapeag Archaeological Site

Merrick Road and Mansfield Drive, Massapequa (516) 572-0200

Nassau County Parks Department

The Fort Massapeag Archaeological Site protects the remnants of a 17th-century Native American fort constructed by the Massapequa tribe of the Algonquin nation. Overlooking South Oyster Bay, the palisaded fort once served as a center of defense and daily life. Archaeological excavations have uncovered artifacts and post molds that offer insights into the tribe’s culture and structures. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the site remains a testament to the area's deep Indigenous history.

Small town, big strides: How local races build strong communities

Local races bring communities together through fun, fitness and a shared purpose. They promote healthy lifestyles, support local charities and boost town spirit. These events, which are very popular in the Massapequas, often attract participants of all ages and abilities, encouraging inclusivity and civic pride while showcasing local parks, streets, and neighborhoods in a positive, energetic way.

And they’re off! Young runners head out eagerly at the start of the 1/4-mile Fun Run

Massapequa — at the heart of racing in Nassau County

A determined field of 336 runners crossed the finish line at the 43rd annual Massapequa Firecracker 5K Run on the evening of June 22, persevering through the 87-degree heat that marked the beginning of Long Island’s first heat wave in two years.

The race was hosted by the Massapequa Road Runners, with Sam Buttigieg serving as race director. The 3.1-mile course began near Clark Boulevard and followed Park Avenue to Mansfield Park before it turned onto the Preserve bike path and ending at Lake Shore Drive by Brady Park.

Ready, set, community!

On Nov. 23, perfect running weather drew 529 participants to the Massapequa Park 5K at Brady Park, a 73-person increase from last year.

Brooklyn’s Timothe Lambert took first place with a time of 15:50, followed by Massapequa Park’s Sal Nastasi, the runner-up for the second consecutive year.

The event benefitted the YES Community Counseling Center, which provides substance abuse treatment and mental health services to families and individuals in Nassau County.

Local top finishers included Massapequa Park’s Christopher Schimkus (2nd overall), and Massapequa’s Michelle Walker and Tiffany Ann Matturro (2nd and 3rd female finishers).

PLACES OF WORSHIP

Religious churches, synagogues and centers play an important role in fostering community connection, support, and shared values. They serve as gathering places for worship, education, and cultural traditions, often offering programs that support families, youth, and the elderly. Beyond spiritual guidance, many provide food drives, counseling, and outreach services that uplift those in need.

By bringing people together across generations and backgrounds, religious institutions help build unity, compassion, and a sense of purpose within the broader community.
