We are pleased to present our annual Living In Malverne & West Hempstead, a special supplement to the Malverne/ West Hempstead Herald.
Those of us who live here know Malverne and West Hempstead are wonderful, diverse communities with rich histories. Our annual guide is a testament to their post-pandemic resurgence. Not only does it include vital information about Malverne and West Hempstead, but it also gives you a look at some of the people and places that represent the best of both.
Think of Living In Malverne & West Hempstead as an “owner’s manual” for newcomers and longtime residents alike. As you’ll see in these pages, there’s an amazingly rich social fabric here. An abundance of services and organizations are available to residents. No matter what your interests, age, religion or needs, these communities have much to offer.
Malverne and West Hempstead, along with Lakeview, offer promising business opportunities for entrepreneurs and a welcoming environment in which to live and work. These three communities truly are “gems” tucked away amidst the bustle of Nassau County.
Among Malverne’s notable enterprises, Crossroads Farm at Grossmann’s has a long history and is now a proud member of the Nassau Land Trust. Farmed by the Grossmann family for more than 100 years, it was a landmark of Long Island agricultural tradition for generations of visitors. It’s now been reinvigorated as an organic farm, devoted to biodynamic and sustainable agricultural principles of land remediation and crop cultivation. Not only is it a great place to obtain locally grown organic vegetables and other tempting products, it is the site of many community festivals and seasonal activities throughout the year.
Halls Pond Park on Nassau Boulevard in West Hempstead is a bucolic place of respite enjoyed by families throughout the area. The beauty and tranquility of the park truly is stunning. And for outdoor enthusiasts looking for a bit of everything, Hempstead State Park on Lake Drive in West Hempstead has been recently renovated. The 737-acre park is a remarkable multiuse facility with tennis courts, playgrounds, trails for hiking and biking, and an observation deck. Anglers can enjoy fishing in three lakes. The Environmental Education and Resiliency Center gives kids hands-on learning experiences while teaching them about their Long Island environment.
The Malverne and West Hempstead chambers of commerce serve their communities by attracting and boosting business that residents and visitors find useful for their every day lives.
Living in Malverne & West Hempstead is published in cooperation with the Malverne Chamber of Commerce and the West Hempstead Chamber of Commerce. We are honored to mark another year as these chambers’ official publication.
We hope that you find this edition useful and informative, and that you enjoy reading the Malverne/West Hempstead Herald 52 weeks per year.
Be well and be safe.

malverne mayor's message
'Acts of Kindness' abound in Malverne
Since taking office as mayor in April, my top priority is to protect the character of our neighborhood and enhance the lives and livelihoods of the residents of the Incorporated Village of Malverne.
I am proud to lead our remarkable village, which is widely recognized for its charming appeal, steep traditions, picturesque downtown, and beautiful homes.
Over the past few years, we have attracted many new and exciting businesses to our business district along Hempstead Avenue, Church Street and Broadway. We continue to appeal to people from surrounding communities for the annual Art Walk, Memorial Day Parade and Holiday Lighting
celebration. Visitors and residents alike will notice the American flags and beautiful hanging baskets that line our downtown. We are particularly proud of our veterans honor banners that are displayed from Memorial Day through Veterans Day, commemorating the military service and sacrifice of our residents.
In the next year, we anticipate further enhancements to our downtown, the completion of a new state-of-the-art police headquarters, as well as major investments into our parks and recreational offerings.
We remain unique in having Nassau’s last working farm, Crossroads Farm, and many religious and civic institutions in our small square mile. But it is the intimate care and involvement of our residents that truly makes Malverne a community where “Acts of Kindness” are often practiced and appreciated.
Sincerely,
Timothy H. Sullivan Mayor

Kindness of Sheldon Wagner
reflected by community
By Mark Nolan
When one person makes it his life’s mission to be kind to everyone, a community takes notice.
The late Sheldon Wagner of Malverne made countless people for years feel special with simple and small acts of kindness.
Wagner’s memory was honored with the creation of a memorial bench outside the local train station.
Wagner, who died in 2018, defined a sense of community and was the type of person everyone knew and liked, Malverne village officials said. As the popular unofficial mayor of Malverne, Wagner greeted everyone at the Long Island Rail Road train station, at Hempstead Avenue and Utterby Road, with a characteristic cheerful wave and was a fixture at parades and events. After his death at 89, family and friends packed the Malverne Funeral Home to say one final goodbye and share memories of the man who helped define this era of Malverne.
After Wagner’s death, many in the community felt a need to honor him, which is how the

bench project. “People loved Sheldon. He was a very special guy in the village for a very long time.”
Friends, family and Malverne residents ultimately raised $4,500 through a GoFundMe account for a memorial in Wagner’s honor. The question was determining just how to honor him, and Pupke said dozens of folks offered ideas, including a sculpture, but the cost became prohibitive.
After visiting more than 50 memorials in the area and speaking with as many as 20 sculptors nationwide, Pupke discovered Eliot Mazzocca of Lido Stone Works in Calverton. Pupke had learned of Mazzocca’s work, especially with projects of community pride. Mazzocca, who has repaired and replaced damaged memorials for U.S. Navy SEAL Michael Murphy of Patchogue, said once he learned about Wagner’s impact on an entire community, he was eager to construct a memorial.
“The story about Sheldon and who he was in the community touched me,” Mazzocca said. “I always believe that when you put good things in the world, they come back to you. I wanted to be part of the memorial.”
association, was also instrumental in organizing and assisting with the memorial. She said Covid-19 interrupted the plans a bit, but neighbors were determined to create a memorial for a man who meant so much to so many people.
“Everyone remembered Sheldon as a presence in Malverne, so Don (Pupke) wanted a presence that reminded people of Sheldon,” Smith said. “Sheldon was always there, and the bench will always be there.”
As for the community going above and beyond to honor one of its own, Pupke and Smith weren’t surprised. They both said Malverne once again displayed its sense of community by working to honor such an integral person that meant so much to the community.
“It was overwhelming, the number of people who donated and asked about the memorial,” Smith said. “That’s the spirit of Malverne.”
Pupke agreed, saying, “In true Malverne form, this was the effort of a lot of people who were all grabbing an oar and rowing to get it done.”

Greg Waxman wanted to give back to veterans, first responders
By Nicole Formisano
First responders are renowned for their ability to think quickly to help others. But what happens when the first responders themselves are the ones who need something?
Malverne’s Greg Waxman is supporting the first responders right here in Malverne. His inaugural Freedom on the Farm 5k raised a whopping $15,000 for six organizations, many of which serve local veterans, police, and firefighters.
“I wanted to do veteran and first responder charities because without them we wouldn't be able to hold events like this,” Waxman said.
The May 2023 race saw 200 participants run through Malverne for
the cause — and it paid off. The money raised by the 5k allowed Waxman to donate $1,000 each to the Steven McDonald foundation, which honors a late detective from Malverne; Paws of War, which trains service dogs for veterans; and the Malverne Fire Department.
He also donated $3,000 to Crossroads Farm, which collaborated with Waxman and hosted the start and finish of the race, and another $3,000 to the Police Benevolent Association, which hosts the Sgt. Thomas

Winters scholarship. The scholarship was created last year in memory of the Malverne police officer, and was funded by Waxman’s Operation Hero run. This year, Waxman’s donations allowed the scholarship to be doubled to $1,000 for each recipient.
Waxman also donated $6,000 to the American Legion Post 44, with $5,500 going towards matching veterans with service dogs. Waxman said he was inspired by the experience of his grandfather, who fought in Germany during World War II. Many stray dogs stayed close to the army camp, and Waxman’s grandfather rescued one and brought it back to the United States. After seeing what the companionship of a dog can bring to a veteran’s life, Waxman wants to help as many veterans as possible have that experience.
The remaining $500 will fund freedom flights, which flies veterans to D.C. to visit memorials built on honor of their service.
Waxman’s checks to all six organizations were presented publicly during the race and the June Village of Malverne meeting because he believes in transparency, he said. He felt it was important that those who participated in the race or donated

Waxman’s support of local heroes is nothing new. He became known as “Patriot Man” for running through Malverne with the American flag during Covid-19 lockdown. Last year he ran 50 miles with famous wheelchair racer Peter Hawkins in Operation Hero, and together they raised $7,500 for veterans and first responders. Residents were very supportive of this year’s Freedom on the Farm, he said.
This year’s Freedom on the Farm 5k raised double the funds for charity compared to last year’s race — a trend Waxman hopes
to continue next year as Freedom on the Farm becomes annual. To Waxman, running is his way of serving those who have sacrificed.
“To me, it’s about your actions,” he said. “To move forward, you have to give back.”

West Hempstead volunteers excel at kindness
By Mark Nolan
When it comes to making a difference in the community, the West Hempstead Community Support Association is second to none.
Association volunteers, though small in total number, are a constant source of acts of kindness throughout the West Hempstead community. One of the group’s most important projects is its biannual Halls Pond Park cleanup.
Neal Rosenblatt worked with the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation & Museums to secure all the needed supplies for the event as well as the truck to haul the trash away. Santos Welti worked to promote the event to get the community out for the cleanup.
“We thank all the board members that attended as well as the community for their support,” said Maureen Greenberg, president of the West Hempstead Community Support Association. “Neal works tirelessly with the county to keep this park clean and in good

repair.”
Greenberg said there is still much work to be done to make Halls Pond Park safe for children and residents.
“Unfortunately, it takes too long for repairs and requested signs to be placed by the county,” she said. “The playground currently is dangerous and has been reported to be repaired. Hopefully, this won’t take another year to repair.”

Silver Award winners raise thousands in donations
By Nicole Formisano
The Girl Scout Law aims to make the world a better place, and that’s exactly what 12-year-old Lorelei Fitzgerald, a Lynbrook resident, Sabrina Jones, also 12-years-old, of West Hempstead, and 13-year-old Rylin Kenney, of Malverne, did. Their projects earned them Silver Awards — a recognition achieved by only 10 percent of Girl Scouts.
Each girl developed a volunteer project close to their heart to help those in need.
Lorelei Fitzgerald, an eighth grader at Howard T. Herber Middle School, was diagnosed with Type I diabetes just before entering fifth grade. She and her mother, Taryn Fitzgerald, said the diagnosis was scary at first, but the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation was a fount of support.
The JDRF sent Lorelei a bag of items, including a teddy bear and a book to help her navigate her nutritional needs. Lorelei has now dedicated her project to fundraising for the organizations cure research.
“I think the JDRF helped us so much when
she was diagnosed, that she wants to help the JDRF help people like her,” Taryn said.
Lorelei said that she’s getting used to the new normal and is now focused on helping others. Her project has collected over $1,000.
“It feels good that I know that I helped a lot of people who may be struggling with it,” Lorelei

said. “And to support them in a way that I was supported when I was diagnosed.”
Sabrina Jones, an eighth grader at Kellenberg's Latin School, has always had a pit bull in her life. Chulo, and now Vespa, are important members of the Jones family. Sabrina is looking to help change people’s misconceptions about the breed. Her project fundraised for the New York Bully Crew, which cares for pit bulls and helps them find good homes.
“I feel like they’re the most mistreated of all the dog breeds, and I just wanted to raise awareness that they’re not all bad,” Sabrina said. “They can still be just as nice as any other dog.”
Sabrina fundraised for the Bully Crew and created an Amazon wish list for supplies the organization needs. Food, beds, blankets, and cleaning supplies were donated to the shelter as part of Sabrina’s project. Between supplies and monetary donations, Sabrina raised nearly $1,000 for the misunderstood pups looking for forever homes.
“I feel proud of how we’ve come this far with spreading awareness,” Sabrina said. “And helping out dogs that are being mistreated.”
Rylin Kenney, also an eighth grader, at Our Lady of Lourdes, was born prematurely in Mercy Hospital and was supported in the neonatal intensive care unit. She received expert care from attentive doctors and nurses, but the hospital’s baby clothes were simply far too big for
preemies. Rylin’s project focused on fundraising and donating supplies for Mercy Hospital’s NICU to give premature babies and their mothers the resources and comfort they need.
“I remember what it was like to be that mom,” Rylin’s mother Gemma said. “So if we could give some comfort to some of the moms and the babies — it’s always nice to not be swimming in your clothes.”
Rylin worked with Mercy Hospital to create an Amazon wish list of supplies the NICU needs. Rylin raised $1,500 for the Mercy NICU. The best part is that Rylin was able to work with Dr. Neil Bellin, the same OBGYN who delivered her 13 years ago.
“It was very nice to be able to help the hospital that helped us so much,” Gemma said. “And we just hope that everybody, the moms that are there, can use it.”
Rylin, Sabrina, and Lorelei, all members of Troop 2015 in Malverne since they were Daisies in kindergarten, supported each other’s projects. The three of them hosted bake sales together, splitting the profit evenly. Their choice to pursue Silver Awards is not a Girl Scout requirement, but rather a decision that reflects their dedication to helping others.

Malverne/W
to veterans never stops
By Mark Nolan
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the U.S.A. have pledged to never forget veterans, and New York Elks Lodge 1 certainly lives up to and exceeds that commandment.
New York Elks Lodge 1 is in Lynbrook but operates throughout Nassau County. When it comes to helping veterans, the Elks of Lodge 1 make it a point to provide assistance to veterans from Malverne, East Rockaway, Lynbrook, West Hempstead, Lakeview, Oceanside, Baldwin, and other communities.
“The Elks veterans slogan is just that,” said Lodge 1 longtime member John Nuzzi, himself a U.S. Navy veteran. “The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget our veterans.”
Lodge 1 has held food and clothing drives; sent needed items to troops overseas; support local veterans' organizations; and many other events. They deliver birthday cards and snacks at Veterans Administration facilities. Lodge 1 hosts a hot roast beef dinner and performs entertaining skits, and brings a barbecue lunch
for veterans at St. Albans VA Medical Center in Queens.
The bottom line — when it comes to acts of kindness, Elks Lodge 1 sets the bar pretty high. “I can go on and on of all we have done,” Nuzzi said. “I have said quite a bit and we as Elks can say much more, I’m sure about that. We do our best to care for veterans.”

In May, Lodge 1 Elks visited St. Albans to deliver birthday cakes, patriotic cookies, muffins, chips, and soda. Along with itemized birthday cards was a $5 Canteen Book for the May birthday veterans to enjoy. Lodge 1 delivers birthday packages monthly.
Lodge 1 also held a barbecue for hospitalized veterans at St. Albans to celebrate the start of summer. The Lodge 1 members set up, cooked, dished, and packed the carts for seven units of veterans. The total of 164 veterans plus families were in attendance, plus hospital aids and staff members, including the 25 Elks members and two young volunteers.
