Building a stronger, more connected Malverne

Dear Neighbors,

It is my honor to serve as President of the Malverne Chamber of Commerce and to share with you the many ways our Chamber continues to grow and thrive. With 97 member businesses strong, we are proud to represent the diverse and dedicated entrepreneurs who keep Malverne vibrant.

Over the past year, our Chamber has been actively engaged in celebrating and supporting our members through ribbon cuttings, community events and networking opportunities. From the Art Walk to the Bunny Hop, to our Local Bites & Business Nights and our Play in the Park, each event reflects the Chamber’s commitment to bringing people together and strengthening the bonds between businesses and the community.

We are also proud of our ongoing collaboration with the Village of Malverne. Our monthly

meetings with the Mayor ensure open communication and a shared vision for the future of our village. Together, we work to ensure that Malverne remains a welcoming place to live, shop and do business.

As we look ahead, our focus remains on supporting our members, fostering local pride and encouraging residents to shop and dine locally. Every purchase made at a Malverne business helps sustain our local economy and preserve the special character of our community.

On behalf of the Chamber Board of Directors, our members and our village partners, I would like to thank you for your continued support. Together, we are building a stronger, more connected Malverne.

A MESSAGE FROM THE WEST HEMPSTEAD CHAMBER PRESIDENT

Building partnerships, growing community

As president of the West Hempstead Chamber of Commerce, I am excited to share how we’ve been working closely with local government agencies to create more opportunities for our businesses and our community. By keeping those lines of communication open, we make sure the needs and ideas of local businesses are heard and acted upon. Together, we can overcome challenges, celebrate successes and continue building a strong foundation for growth in our town.

One of the things I value most about the West Hempstead Chamber is the way it connects people. When business owners, professionals and community leaders come together, great things happen. Through networking events, workshops and shared projects, members build relationships that often turn into partnerships and new opportunities. These connections are at the heart of what we do, and they remind us that we’re never building our businesses alone

— we’re building them together. Advocating for our local businesses is another role we take seriously. We want our members to know we are here to support them, to amplify their voices and to help create a business climate where everyone has the chance to succeed. Strong local businesses mean more jobs, more services and a stronger economy for all of us.

Most importantly, when businesses thrive, the whole community benefits.

Looking ahead, I encourage our members to get involved, share ideas and take full advantage of the opportunities the West Hempstead Chamber provides. And if you’re a business that hasn’t joined us yet, we invite you to be part of something bigger than yourself. Together, we can continue to support one another, grow stronger and build a community where businesses and families can flourish side by side.

Dr. Linda Anderson

our

malverne mayor's message

Malverne: One happening town

Malverne is often referred to as the “Mayberry of Long Island." We were recently described by an international travel guide as one of the “Dreamy Small Towns In Long Island That Are Straight Out Of A Hallmark Movie” — the only one in Nassau County that made the list! What I have never heard, however, is that our small close-knit community is “Happening."

I had one of my closest friends visit me recently for dinner. We took the time to catch up over some rustic internationally flavored appetizers from a restaurant that I frequent. For our main entrée we made our way to one of the newest business in the village, which prides itself on farm-to-table dining and literally opens its dining and bar area to the street when the weather is cooperating. My friend turned and said to me “this is one happening town."

Our business district has come alive once again. We have many new businesses that are thriving on innovative ideas with a nostalgic twist and more traditional ones that are reinventing themselves. We have a successful

bowling alley, a reinvigorated pizza place, a trendy ice cream parlor, a traditional pub, fine dining, and a new movie theater in the works that promises to add more vigor to our downtown on the way.

The list goes on and continues to grow on the progress we have made here: a one-of-a-kind organic farm, home design studio and a gift shop that no one seems to pass by without stopping in for a look, which turns into a wonderful shopping experience.

While it continues to amaze me that people who live in our region still have never heard of us, I can tell you — by the many accolades bestowed upon us as proof — that our little slice of Americana, is quite “Happening."

We hope that you will come to visit us, look around, perhaps stay for a while — and experience all the character, traditions, festivities, beautiful homes, businesses, and families that define Malverne by the many complimentary descriptions we are known for.

Tim Baker/Herald Mayor Tim Sullivan enjoyed a screening of “Mufasa: The Lion King” at Harris Field with his daughter Ella. The movie night was part of the Village’s annual free summer event series.

things to do in your

this year

There are countless events happening in Malverne, West Hempstead and Lakeview year round. Here are some highlights you won't want to miss.

Celebrate Groundhog Day with Malverne Mel

Malverne Mel makes his annual prognostication in February, letting Malverne folks know whether we will have an early spring or a long winter. Since 1996, Mel has been an integral village tradition and is celebrated with treats and fundraising to support Mel’s home with the STAR Foundation.

Artwork of Mel created by students — from Our Lady of Lourdes, Grace Lutheran, James A. Dever Elementary, Davison Avenue Intermediate and Maurice W. Downing Primary School — is displayed in the LIRR station house. Following the prognosis, attendees enjoy hot chocolate and other refreshments.

Malverne Mayor Tim Sullivan listens closely to Malverne Mel’s annual prognostication, sharing with details with the village

Annual Village Art Walk

Watch as the village turns into a lively art gallery during the Malverne Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Art Walk. Every summer, artists are invited to submit their creations to be displayed in businesses throughout the village.

Submissions can include a range of different mediums. Opening day includes music and face painting; attendees are invited to take a stroll through the neighborhood, viewing the art and shopping at local businesses.

Last year featured the first juried show, with winners selected in various categories.

Attend the Dancing of the Giglio

Celebrate ItalianAmerican tradition with The Sons of San Paolino at the annual Dancing of the Giglio. The event is the highlight of a four-day festival at West Hempstead’s St. Thomas the Apostle Church.

The Dancing of the Giglio has roots in Italian religious traditions but was popularized by Italian immigrants settled in New York City. During the dance, more than 100 men carry a 54-foot-tall wooden structure, hoisting a full sixperson band as well, around the church’s parking lot for nearly three hours. They take breaks after each lift to celebrate their heritage.

Stu Goldman/Herald
In June, over 100 Long Islanders with Italian roots gathered in West Hempstead to take part in the annual Dancing of the Giglio.

Enjoy an event at Crossroads Farm

Crossroads Farm at Grossman’s, nestled at the entrance to the Village of Malverne, is the only operating farm in Nassau County. The 5-acre organic site not only provides fruit and vegetables for purchase, the friendy staff offer educational programs and invite resident to participate in volunteer opportunities.

Crossroads Farm, as part of the Nassau Land Trust (a nonprofit dedicated to land conservation across the county), is a hub of activities for all ages, with informative agricultural lessons and community events. Attend a Friday night food truck rodeo, enter a pie-eating competition or celebrate the harvest during one of the many festivals.

Feel the holiday spirit as winter arrives

Our communities are filled with holiday cheer as lights decorate homes and community spaces each December. The Lakeview Civic Association hosts a tree lighting, which includes giveaways, performances and a visit from Santa Claus.

The jolly fellow also stops by the Village of Malverne's holiday festivities, which include a day packed with performances and holiday fun. The village celebration — attended by thousands —includes holiday food, carousel rides and more activities for all ages.

West Hempstead marks Hanukkah and Christmas during the annual Halls Pond holiday festivities. The celebration, organized by the West Hempstead Community Support Group, includes both a tree and menorah lighting for residents of all faiths to enjoy.
