The Village of Malverne is ideally situated, 45 minutes from the heart of New York City, and within 15 minutes of some of the world’s most beautiful white sand beaches. Residents also enjoy the temperate Long Island climate — warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer than nearby cities and suburbs.

Since it became incorporated in 1921, the one square-mile village is widely known for its charming, small-town appeal, with lovely homes, quaint downtown shops and restaurants as well as our beautiful parks.

The village also has many landmarks, beloved by locals and visitors alike.

These include Crossroads Farm at Grossmann’s, the closest organic farm to New York City. The farm comprises five acres of land and hosts events throughout the year. Other landmarks include the Malverne Historical House, which preserves and displays Malverne’s history through the decades. Noteworthy village events include the Holiday Lighting, which draws admirers from throughout the metropolitan area who delight in the Malverne’s transformation into a holiday showplace, complete with an elf parade, photos with Santa, dance performances, horse-and-carriage rides through the village and more.

Malverne’s Memorial Day Parade is another major village event, at which dozens of organizations march through the village’s streets in honor of those who died for the country. Some of the other popular annual events in the village include the Art Walk, the Summer Entertainment Series and the Fall Festival and Classic Car Show.

A five-member village board governs Malverne, including Mayor Patricia Ann McDonald and four trustees. The heart of the village’s government is located at Village Hall, 99 Church St. in Malverne.

Malverne is served by the Malverne Police Department. The police chief is John Aresta. The Malverne Volunteer Fire Department has served for more than 100 years and is at 30 Broadway. Its chief is Michael Gildea.

The village also has its own Department of Public Works, which provides sanitation management, village beautification and road repairs, among other services.

There are four public schools and two parochial schools in Malverne. In addition, there is a middle school and two elementary schools.

One of the village’s many celebrities is Malverne Mel, the groundhog weather prognosticator who makes an appearance each Feb. 2. Mel has been a mainstay in the village for over 20 years and draws hundreds of people each year to hear his prognostication.

Malverne is one of the older, more established communities on Long Island. Dating back to the early 1700s, Malverne was originally settled by the Rockaway Indians with the current Ocean Avenue serving as an Indian path back then. While many original settlers of Long Island were attracted to fishing industries, Malverne’s excellent location drew farmers.

The name Malverne originates from Malvern, England. Alfred H. Wagg, a vice president and general manager of the Amsterdam Development and Sales Company, and Ernest Childs, an executive of the Amed Chemical Company, contributed to the naming of the village in 1913. After Malverne became an unincorporated village in 1921, the village was transformed from rural village to suburban community.

The last farm in Malverne, Crossroads Farm at Grossman's, was acquired by the Nassau Land Trust in 2006 and continues to operate as the last working farm in the village.

Founded on Aug. 11, 1986, the Malverne Historical & Preservation Society, at 369 Ocean Ave., is filled with its own collection of vintage photos and items, with board members who can share the village’s history in detail.

I

The charming history of Malverne Mel

n most places, January marks the beginning of several long winter months. In Malverne, however, it’s the prep period for a signature village event: Groundhog Day with Malverne Mel. The occasion is a tradition started in 1996 by former Malverne Mayor Joseph Canzoneri and Barry Manning, editor of the Malverne Times, which became the Malverne/West Hempstead Herald.

Canzoneri acted as the event’s master of ceremonies until Tony Panzarella became the mayor in 1999. With each subsequent mayor, the event grew. A petting zoo and even a wife for Malverne Mel — Malverne Melissa — was added into the mix in 2003. Melissa relieved Mel of his prognostication duties for some unknown reason in 2007.

Almost every year thereafter was marked by another bit of folklore that became ingrained into Malverne’s history. Not too long after their marital union, Melissa and Mel had a baby – another Malverne Mel – who took the reins as the village’s chief

prognosticator in 2008.

In 2011, the village canceled its Groundhog Day ceremony for the first time due to an ice storm. Not wanting to miss the important event, Mel became the first groundhog to phone in his prognostication. He told Mayor Patti McDonald at village hall that he predicted an early spring.

In February 2018, with the temperature in the mid-20s with cloudy skies, Malverne’s annual Groundhog Day with Malverne Mel was a bit different from recent years. Usually, the village gathers at Chester A. Reese Veterans Memorial Park by the gazebo on Church Street to hear Malverne Mel’s prognostication on whether we’ll have an early spring or six more weeks of winter. Instead, about 100 residents filled the greenhouse at Crossroads Farm.

Regardless of where Malverne Mel makes his annual prediction, you can expect the event to draw people of all ages who include village residents and town officials.

The West Hempstead National Bank opened its doors in 1927.

stead in conjunction with the creation of Hempstead Lake State Park. In the 1930s, ownership of the Paramount Riding Academy was turned over to Charles Heinsohn, who renamed it Lakeside Riding Academy, a name that survived until 2006, when owners Suzanne Benedict and Brian McTigue sold it to Alex Jacobson and Benjamin Haghani, and it was renamed the Lakewood Stables. Jacobson changed the name to the New York Equestrian Center after the 2013 renovation.

Hall’s Pond Park, the largest in West Hempstead, is made up three contiguous parcels of land acquired

by Nassau County between 1956 and 1970. It is one of several properties in the county that were originally designed for drainage purposes and later turned into public parks.

A name change of West Hempstead to Mayfair Park was proposed in 2000, but the idea was voted down.

The West Hempstead Historical

Society — which celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2018 — has continued to build upon its collection of historical items, sharing the history of West Hempstead.

The hamlet of West Hempstead got its name after the Long Island Rail Road built a station on Hempstead Turnpike in 1891. The station was originally referred to as “West of Hempstead,” and soon after, the hamlet’s name became what it is today.

The community steadily grew over the years thanks to the establishment of its parks, schools and businesses. Chestnut Street School, the first school to be established in the district in 1913, celebrated its 105th anniversary in 2018.

West Hempstead is a Nassau County hamlet rich with history, parks, numerous public transportation options and other amenities that have been drawing residents and businesses to the area for years.

The hamlet has several business districts, including Hempstead Avenue, Woodfield Road and Hempstead Turnpike, all of which offer a mosaic of different restaurants, convenience stores and more that reflect the diverse needs and interests of residents. The area has a strong Orthodox Jewish community, as well as many residents from Western Europe and other areas across the globe.

One of the hamlet’s many gems is Hall’s Pond Park, the county’s 11-acre retreat, which is the largest in West Hempstead, at the corner of Nassau Boulevard and Hempstead Avenue. The park includes a duck pond, playground and walking paths, which attract children and adults, and is a gathering place for events hosted by the West Hempstead Community Support Association, the West Hempstead Lions Club, the Police Athletic League and many more.

The century-old Hempstead Lake State Park is another hamlet treasure, with tennis and basketball courts, horse trails, fishing ponds, a new playground and a carousel.

Echo Park, which offers indoor and outdoor pools, a diving pool, saunas and a fitness center, is located on Nassau Boulevard and is open to town residents.

In Feb. 2018, the town renovated the park as part of its refurbishment project.

New York Equestrian Center, on Eagle Avenue near Hempstead Lake State Park, offers escorted trail rides in the park, indoor lessons, horse boarding and other services, and is home to the only physical therapy business for horses on Long Island.

Another of the hamlet’s main gathering hubs is the West Hempstead Public Library, which offers programs for all ages throughout the year in its lower level community rooms.

There are five public schools in West Hempstead: a high school, a middle school, an intermediate school, a primary school and a kindergarten center. The hamlet is also home to the Gersh Academy, a school for children on the autism spectrum, and several parochial schools.

rom mechanical bull riding to inflatable slides, West Hempstead’s annual Street Fair is expected to feature fun-filled activities on Sunday, Oct. 7. Hosted by the West Hempstead Chamber of Commerce and the West Hempstead Community Support and Civic Association, several local businesses will be lined up Nassau Boulevard, from Hempstead Avenue to Johnson’s Lane near Hall’s Pond Park.

The daylong event usually draws hundreds of residents and people of all ages. Some of the attractions people can expect

With so many activities to choose from, residents can expect to be entertained throughout the day.

Aug. Summer 31 Entertainment Series Every year, Malverne’s Summer Entertainment Series features cover bands playing classic tunes at village parks. In addition, the series features theatrical works as well. The Cold Spring Harbor Band: A Billy Joel Tribute Band, will close out this year’s ceremony with many of Joel’s signature songs.

Memorial Service Malverne’s candlelight ceremony, An Evening of Remembrance, will honor those who died on Sept. 11, 2001. onsisting of a primary school, intermediate school, middle school and high school, the Malverne Union Free School District has set ambitious goals since it began as a single schoolhouse more than 160 years ago.

Since then, Malverne has seen its school district grow in every respect. High educational quality is a hallmark of the elementary schools. Small class sizes, with a student-to-teacher ratio of about 20 to 1, ensure that all children receive the attention they deserve.

At the Howard. T. Herber Middle School, there are diverse programs, including a full roster of clubs so youngsters have an opportunity to explore various interests. The academic schedule is progressively individualized from the middle school to the high school, making the transition smooth.

Malverne High School is one of the most effective secondary schools in the country.

Malverne’s class of 2018 set numerous records. Ninety-nine percent of the graduates received a Regents diploma, 64 percent earned an Advanced Regents Diploma, 26 percent students were National Scholars and more than $5 million in scholarships were awarded to students.

Since its birth, the district’s goal has been the total success of all children, making it a place where students, educators and parents can collaborate to provide for the education of children as independent, lifelong learners.

arochial schools have been woven into the fabric of Malverne and West Hempstead for decades. The goals for many of the parochial schools in both communities are the same: to promote an equal opportunity for all students as they journey to increase their knowledge, both academically and spiritually.

Students at all of the parochial schools take part in various activities throughout the year both in the classroom and in their communities where they support their neighbors. For instance, the Student Council at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Malverne annually takes part in a clothing drive. In March 2018, their drive, which was part of their Lenten project, helped to collect new and gently used clothes for St. Vincent de Paul.

At St. Thomas the Apostle School in West Hempstead, students, parents, faculty and staff members annually host “International Day — A Celebration of Diversity,” to recognize different cultures through food, music and arts and crafts. Students from Grace Lutheran School in Malverne take part in numerous events in the village. In February 2018, students sang“America the Beautiful” to close a ceremony for the unveiling of the Steven McDonald Memorial Highway sign.

The legal name of this school district is the West Hempstead Union Free School District.

The boundaries of the district have been set under state law. The State Education Department maintains a close check on standards and what has become state law through mandates of the State Legislature. The state allows a local Board of Education to set whatever additional policies may be deemed necessary for the proper function of the district’s schools. The board comprises seven public-spirited citizens who maintain homes within the district and who serve without financial compensation in the best interests of their community. Board members are elected to three-year terms, and once a year, board members elect a president and vice president to preside over meetings.

It’s all happening at the farm

C

rossroads Farm at Grossman’s host a number of family-friendly events throughout the year. Each spring, the farm holds its annual opening-day ceremony to kick off its Barnyard Event Series. From face-painting to live music, the celebration features activities and entertainment.

The farm, which is operated by Nassau Land Trust — a nonprofit that preserves land throughout Nassau County — has undergone several renovations in recent years.

Cornering Hempstead and Morris Avenue the farm was originally coordinated by the Grossman family for over a century. This landmark of Long Island agricultural tradition was bought by the county with the help of the Nassau Land Trust in 2006. Since then, the land and buildings have been revived, and the farm is certified by the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York as they continue to provide and promote organic and sustainable agriculture within the village.

The most recent was the painting of the barn

by Boy Scout Troop 24 of Malverne with Elite Painting Services, as part of an Eagle Scout project.

The celebration, which also recognizes Earth Day, gives residents a chance to learn more about the farm’s educational programs.

Every week, students from Malverne and Valley Stream visit the facility to take part in its environmental programs, which include Sow to Grow, in which children learn how to block soil and plant seeds.

As part of its Barnyard Event Series, the farm features a Food Truck Rodeo, a threepart series that includes music, different food trucks, local breweries and games for children. The event series continues this fall and will feature wine tasting with the Malverne Civic Association on Sept. 21, a Farm to Table Dinner on Sept. 29, Oktoberfest on Oct. 13 and a Taste of the Holidays on Nov. 16.

Beautifying a shining star in West Hempstead

F

or the past eight years, dozens of volunteers — including residents, community groups and local elected leaders —have gotten their hands dirty during the West Hempstead Community Support Association’s annual cleanup at Hall’s Pond Park.

The civic association started the annual cleanup to maintain one of West Hempstead’s gems, bring residents together and promote community service. Throughout the year, the Boy Scouts also clean up the park before big events.

Parents and children take time out of their weekend to give back to the community. Receiving support and care from the community’s local elected leaders also plays a key role in the cleanup, since they usually provide tools and garbage bags for the event.

In May 2018, working with West Hempstead’s Boy Scout

Troop 240 and local elected leaders such as State Sen. Todd Kaminsky and Assemblymen Brian Curran and Ed Ra, the group brought the community together to spruce up the 11-acre park, the largest in West Hempstead.

Other organizations that usually take part include the West Hempstead and Lakeview fire departments, the West Hempstead Education Association and the youth group at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in West Hempstead.

Many of the children involved have become civic-minded through the event, a mindset that has been developed through the cleanup. In addition, the park cleanup influences residents to be more conscious not only civically, but also environmentally.

Many would agree that the WHCSA’s annual cleanup at Hall’s Pond Park is a strong representation of community pride in West Hempstead.

Highlighting local performers of all ages

W

hether it’s through music, comedy or theater, the West Hempstead Community Support Association hopes to highlight resident talent of all ages while promoting community pride. For the first time in 2018, performers of all ages got to show off their talents in front of family and friends at Hall’s Pond Park in the West Hempstead Community Support Association’s inaugural West Hempstead’s Got Talent.

Roughly 100 residents gathered around the park’s gazebo to watch a variety of acts that included singers, comedians and musicians competing for bragging rights and a gift basket from NEFCU, with a $50 American Express card.

The talent show presents a number of opportunities for those who take part. Younger residents can make their first public performance, while older participants can cross an item off their bucket lists.

The association proposed the idea at one of its summer concerts in 2017. Group members had noticed that some of the group’s events were not well attended, and they saw a talent show as a way to generate interest in community events and causes.

The WHCSA had reached out to local businesses and schools, public and private, to advertise the event, hoping to reach every demographic in the community.

Local businesses that contributed to the inaugural program include Pompei Ristorante, Fel’s Hair Creations, Riesterer’s Bakery, Bageltown, Lia’s Pizzeria, Hair by Claudine, National Wholesale Liquidators and NEFCU. Judges of the competition were all local as well: Harry Baldino, owner of Creative Corner in West Hempstead, Eitan Kantor, owner of Hyperstudio in West Hempstead and Joyce Simantov, a local, full-time professional musician.

Through the talent show, residents got to witness some of the many hidden talents in their community. In addition, the event gave the WHCSA an opportunity to demonstrate what the organization does for the community, and how much members care about West Hempstead.

Founded in 1995, the association has strived to find numerous ways of promoting the importance community involvement.

With the success of the association’s inaugural talent show, events like this will help to develop the growth of everything that the organization seeks to accomplish.

Cultural flavor at Malverne’s Garden Tour

T

o showcase the beauty of the village’s backyard gardens, the Malverne Civic Association welcomed back its annual garden Garden Tour in June 2018.

The tour, originally run by the Malverne Merchants, went on hiatus after the last tour in 2009. Now, with the village’s encouragement, the tour has made its return.

Members of the civic association agreed that the community had missed the event, and that it provides an opportunity for neighbors to come out while adding cultural flavor to the village.

The association, run by seven women, promotes the quality of life for the community and helps further other institutions in the village, such as political or volunteer groups.

In previous years, people have come from as far as Staten Island to see “The Hidden Gardens of Malverne,” as the tour was once dubbed.

Many of the gardeners who have featured their homes spend hours each day to improve and groom their yards. In addition, many of them use organic products to protect other wildlife in their garden such as birds and friendly insects.

The tour kicks off at Crossroads Farm, where each visitor is given a brochure with a map and descriptions of all the houses.

The tour is self-guided, giving visitors time to enjoy each house and the freedom to go in any order they want. The tour ends at the farm, where people can enjoy refreshments.

Civic association members hope that the Garden Tour will also encourage more residents to become involved in the group’s activities. The tour is just one of several events throughout the year that the civic association hosts to promote a strong sense of community in Malverne, as well as feature some of the village’s hidden treasures.

Town & County Nassau County Nassau County is governed by an elected Legislature, which is comprised of members from 19 districts. It includes an independent budget director who advises the Legislature on spending and revenue matters. Residents may submit petitions for proposed laws that legislators must consider. Legislators serve two-year terms.

Town of Hempstead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of roughly 760,000 people.

Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads.

Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Democrat Laura Gillen — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office.

The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget.

Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
