he demographics for the Village of Malverne show few surprises to those who have lived there for some time.

The Malverne population on the 2010 census shows that there are 8,514 residents residing in the village. Of those, 7,066 are white, 260 are Black, 736 are Hispanic, 354 are Asian, four are American Indians and one is a Pacific Islander.

The median income of residents in the village is $112,007, slightly higher than that of surrounding communities.

The majority of households, 44 percent, earn between $75,000 and $149,999 a year. Eleven percent earn more than $150,000 a year while 13 percent earn less than $30,000 a year.

The poverty rate is less than 2 percent.

Slightly more than 20 percent of the population is under the age of 25. More than 17 percent are over the age of 65.

Of residents, 3,200 or 49 percent are high school graduates. Only 8 percent of the adults have not graduated from high school. Twenty-eight percent hold bachelor’s or associate’s degrees and 15 percent hold graduate degrees.

in their own homes. Of those who rent said that they paid more than $1,000 a month in rent.

There are four schools in Malverne.

The high school was recently on the list of top high schools in the nation by a national magazine. In addition, there is a middle school and two elementary schools.

n the late 18th and 19th centuries, settlers began arriving on what was once the tribal territory of the Rockaway Indians, attracted to nearby fishing industries and the farming possibilities that the area’s fertile land and easy access to water provided.

In 1911 the Amsterdam Development and Sales Company opened a small tract of land surrounding the railroad station, under the direction of Alfred H. Wagg. This land was the foundation for the present Village of Malverne.

The first land developed by the company was the Lindner farm and the first street was named Norwood Avenue, which ran perpendicular to Hempstead Avenue. Malverne’s first house was built on the corner of these two avenues, and was owned by Wagg.

The young community found itself facing many tasks before it could become an independent economic and social entity. Although there was a fire department, established in 1919 by Theodore Martine, Sr., Townsend Ackley and Isaac Cornwall, and the beginnings of a police force existed, the problems of organizing churches, street paving, water supply and street lighting confronted the townspeople.

One would expect that the native farmers might resent the rapid changes proposed by the newcomers. However, it is said that the cooperation shown by the two groups was nothing less than remarkable.

In 1910, the “Dinky” replaced the steam train as the main mode of transportation for Malvernites. The “Dinky” was a single car run by an electric storage battery and it looked like an ordinary trolley car. Many people referred to it as the “Toonerville Trolley.” John Hughes was the famous conductor of the “Dinky,” which was extremely temperamental and would often not operate in cold temperatures, forcing Malver-

nites to walk from Valley Stream.

The First World War put a damper on Malverne’s further development. The flu epidemic, the coal shortage and the general anxiety of the winter of 1918 made this a hard period for all.

After the war, the development of Malverne accelerated.

It seemed that the community’s biggest problem was whether or not to incorporate. Valid arguments both for and against the move were advanced at a meeting held at the Fire House on Oct. 29, 1920. In the end, the proponents for incorporation were victorious. On Dec. 1, an election was held, and Edward J. Christopher was elected the first village president.

Also elected were trustees Charles Weber, Isaac Cornwall, John Wicks and Eugene Dressner. The official day of incorporation was April 4, 1921. Malverne, with a population of 700, became the newest and smallest incorporated village in New York state.

During the early 1920s Malvernites enjoyed themselves thoroughly. The Blossom Heath Inn in Lynbrook was in its heyday, prohibition was in effect, people were buying new cars, and Malverne provided many different kinds of recreation, including the Malverne Swimming Club and the Thursday Night Bowling Club.

Meanwhile, Malverne was expanding. Streets were paved, drainage systems installed and the village’s population grew. The 1940 census showed that Malverne had achieved first class village status, with a population of 5,203. This new status brought added responsibilities for the village’s administration. The house census stood at 1,444 occupied homes, 30 unoccupied and 46 under construction. The 1940 budget rose in proportion and amounted to $117,230 with the tax rate at $.87.

Monthly reports on new buildings showed a regular increase, the new firehouse was built in 1939 and a high school was built. In recent decades, Malverne has continued to grow and prosper, keeping its identity as a high quality, parklike suburb neighboring New York City.

isitors to our village often remark on the beauty and charm of Malverne. As residents, we love to hear that they appreciate our community as much as we do, and we are grateful for the dedication and efforts of the many people who work together and give of themselves to sustain the unique character of our hometown.

It seems that every season, we are enriched with some new growth to help us better appreciate the village.

This spring, we enjoyed seeing a beautiful new public garden emerge, completing a string of parks throughout the business district along Church Street, Hempstead Avenue and Broadway. The cost was low — with careful planning and the skills of our dedicated Public Works staff — but the impact is great. Residents have yet another beautiful place to gather, to rest and to share in our downtown.

We also see new resources being added for the future, from one end of Hempstead Avenue to the other — including the completed Malverne Volunteer Ambulance Corps headquarters and the approval of a new restaurant, soon to be the largest dining spot in town.

Malverne largely remains the friendly, caring community that brought my parents here. Recently, on a warm summer afternoon, friends and neighbors gathered again at Howard T. Herber School to contribute to children in need through the James J. Callahan III Memorial Operation 5,000 Backpacks.

Likewise, it’s reassuring to see the passion of residents who help protect our community whether taking on the water company and the FAA, or encouraging the success of our merchants.

These are people who give selflessly to help one another.

In every organization, house of worship or club throughout the village, we see principles and cherished traditions handed

down from one generation to the next. We shiver together awaiting the groundhog’s prediction on an early morning in February, after the Memorial Day parade there are hot dogs and Dixie cups at the American Legion and Little League’s Opening Patricia Ann Day is still one of the biggest events in Norris-McDonald the village.

We share years of common memories — playing at Summer Rec, buying pumpkins at the farm, enjoying the Merchants Fair in the fall and the Holiday Lighting every winter. Year after year, I find that it is the people who we value the most. We still look forward to having the opportunity to meet and mingle with the other folks who share our love of Malverne.

Our location in the heart of Nassau’s south shore completes the narrative of who we are and why we choose to reside here.

In less than an hour, we can be in the middle of Times Square or Jones Beach. The best of the world is within our easy reach.

People travel from around the world for a small glimpse of the natural, cultural and historic resources available to us every day. Nowhere else in the world do people enjoy the variety of sports, restaurants, nightlife, schools, museums, libraries and entertainment that we do.

It is important to learn from our past so that we can fully develop the potential of tomorrow. Malverne continues as a reflection of the caring, hard-working families who built a gracious and beautiful village here. This year, we lost a number of those individuals who made our community better for their selfless giving. We will miss them.

Looking ahead, we will continue to work together to protect the common vision that we share and to preserve our strong village. As Mayor, I have the advantage of seeing firsthand the next generation who commit themselves, as I swear in the leaders and new members of the volunteer Fire Department and Police Reserves, and the newest Eagle Boy Scouts and Gold Star Girl Scouts. It’s clear that our future is in good hands.

Living in: West Hempstead

T

he population of West Hempstead in the 2010 census was 18,862. The median income for households was $94,348 and the poverty rate was 6.4 percent.

The median age for West Hempstead was 39.9 years old.

The largest racial group was white, with 12,424 residents, or 65.9 percent residents in that group. Slightly less than 2,000 residents were Black, 1,129 Asian, 3,098 Hispanic, nine American Indian and two Pacific Islanders. Of those residents, 25.3 percent were under the age of 18, while 14 percent were over the age of 65.

The median house size in West Hempstead is 1,900 square feet. The median sale price is $365,000.

The majority of residents, 48 percent, are high school graduates. Only 13 percent did not graduate from high school. Twenty-five percent hold bachelor’s or associate’s degrees. Fourteen percent hold graduate degrees.

Twenty-six percent work in the area of education and health. Fifteen percent work in retail or wholesale sales, while eleven percent work in finance and real estate. Ten percent list themselves as professionals.

Thirty-seven percent earn from $30,000 to $74,999 a year, while a like percentage say they earn between $75,000 and $149,999 a year. Only 16 percent say they earn less than $30,000 and ten percent that they earn $150,000 or more

Fifty percent of the homes in the community were built between 1950 and 1989, while 49 percent were built prior to 1950. Only one percent of the homes in West Hempstead were reported as having been built after 1990.

Eighty-nine percent of the residents own their homes, while 11 percent rent.

The majority of the rents are between $600 and $999 a month.

There are eight schools in West Hempstead, a highlyrated high school, a middle school and six elementary schools.

W

est Hempstead, a 4-square-mile unincorporated area within the Town of Hempstead, was once a dense woodland.

While the validity of the often-taught concept of 13 tribes inhabiting Long Island at the time of European colonization has recently been questioned, what is known is that the area that is now West Hempstead was used as a gathering place by Algonquian-speaking natives because of its central location.

In the fall of 1643, two enterprising gentlemen, the Rev. Robert Fordham and John Carman, crossed Long Island Sound by rowboat to negotiate with the local Indians for a tract of land upon which to establish a new community. According to the legend, representatives of the Massapequak, Mericoke, Matinecock and Rockaway tribes met with the men at a site slightly west of the current Denton Green. The Indians sold approximately 64,000 acres, the present day towns of Hempstead and North Hempstead, for items worth less than $100 today.

It has been suggested that the new settlement was called Hempstead as a reminder of the English town of Hemel-Hempstead where most of the original settlers were born.

In 1776, the area that is now called Lakeview was the site of what is thought by some historians as the first bloodshed of the Revolutionary War, called the Skirmish at DeMott’s mill. At the time, most of Hempstead was loyal to British rule.

After the war, the area was a flourishing farm community when President George Washington, originally a plantation owner, traveled there in 1790 and commented on the agricultural techniques. Farmer Joseph Gildersleeve built a house on

Hempstead Turnpike in 1794. His farm was later purchased

by Hiram K. Bedell, who built a larger house about 1835. The Bedell house has since been moved to the Old Bethpage Village Restoration.

In the early 1800s Oliver’s Eagle Flour Mill, in what is now Hempstead Lake State Park, was the largest gristmill on Long Island. The mill’s days, however, were cut short when the land was slated to become a reservoir for the growing population of Brooklyn.

During the late 1830s, future poet Walt Whitman served as the schoolmaster of the Trimming Square school district, located at the meeting point of Franklin Square, Garden City South and West Hempstead, for three months.

In the late 1800s, St. Ann’s Health Resort opened in West Hempstead and would evolve over the years into what is now Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, Long Island’s first voluntary hospital.

The Long Island Rail Road built a station on Hempstead Turnpike west of Hempstead Village in 1891. The railroad provided service to Mineola until 1935, when West Hempstead station became a terminal. During this time, inventor and aviator Orville Wright lived in West Hempstead. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, one-quarter of West Hempstead land went on the auction block.

After World War II, West Hempstead joined other communities in accommodating large numbers of soldiers returning from the war. West Hempstead’s centralized location close to three LIRR lines and with its own exit on the Southern State Parkway drew people from near and far. Major thoroughfares Hempstead Turnpike, Hempstead Avenue and Woodfield Road have also contributed to its growth. The population of the hamlet is quite diverse, as is the number of religious denominations within its borders.

Nassau CouNty Nassau County is governed by an elected Legislature. The Legislature is composed of legislators from 19 districts. It includes an independent budget director who advises the Legislature on spending and revenue matters. The Legislature also enables residents to submit petitions for proposed new laws that legislators are obligated to consider. The 19 county legislators serve two-year terms.

towN of hempstead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of approximately 760,000 people. Within the Town there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads.

Under the current system, the Town of Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Kate Murray — and a six-member Town Council.

The six members of the council are elected from one of six councilmatic districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have a four-year term of office.

The supervisor serves as the chief executive officer of town government. She presides over all town board meetings, directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments, employing just more than 2,100 people. As the chief financial officer of the township, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget.

Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
