A community that cares: Get involved By Kayla Dechter
C
ommunity spirit is at the heart of Lynbrook and East Rockaway, extending far beyond annual festivals and holiday celebrations. Throughout the year, dedicated volunteers, civic organizations and local business leaders work together to strengthen the community, support neighbors in need and enhance village life. Whether you're new to the area or looking for a way to get involved, there are many opportunities to make a meaningful difference. Here are three organizations helping shape Lynbrook and East Rockaway — and how you can become part of their mission.
Holden Leeds/Herald Lynbrook Kiwanis Club members gathered with the Valley Stream and Island Park Kiwanis Clubs at Governors Comedy Club during a fundraiser supporting their Governor’s project, which this year focuses on helping children in foster care.
Lynbrook Kiwanis Club: Service through fellowship The Lynbrook Kiwanis Club is dedicated to supporting local youth and strengthening the community through volunteer service, fundraising and outreach. The club sponsors the Lynbrook High School Key Club, helping students develop leadership skills and a passion for community service, while also organizing scholarship and charitable initiatives that benefit local families. Members are well known for their frequent community car washes and other fundraisers, raising money to assist students and families in need. As part of Kiwanis International, the club also partners with neighboring chapters on regional service projects, including this year's New York District Kiwanis governor's project supporting children in foster care. How to get involved: Attend one of the club's community fundraisers, volunteer at a service project, or learn more about membership through the Lynbrook Kiwanis Club's Facebook page or by speaking with a member at a local event. 12

East Rockaway Kiwanis Club: 75 years of giving back For decades, the East Rockaway Kiwanis Club has been dedicated to serving children and families, making it one of the village's longest-standing civic organizations. Since 1950, members have supported local students through scholarships, sponsored K-Kids at Rhame Avenue and Centre Avenue schools and the Key Club at East Rockaway High School, and organized food drives and other service projects that benefit neighbors in need. The club is also a familiar presence at many community events, supporting the Huckleberry Frolic, Memorial Day Parade, Senior Center and Children's Recreation Center while partnering with other local organizations throughout the year. Beyond East Rockaway, members contribute to Kiwanis initiatives that assist with pediatric trauma care, disaster relief, foster care and children's charities, reflecting the organization's mission of improving the lives of children both locally and around the world. How to get involved: Attend a community service project or fundraiser, or learn more about membership through the East Rockaway Kiwanis Club's Facebook page or by speaking with a current member at one of the club's local events.

East Rockaway Library:
Beyond the books By Brian Kacharaba
W
hether stopping in to take out a new book, bringing the kids to an activity or joining neighbors for a community event, there is always a reason to visit the East Rockaway Public Library. Throughout the year, its programs bring residents of different ages together to learn, create and have fun, with everything from storytimes and crafts to educational programs, clubs and special events. More than simply a place to find something new to read, the library is a welcoming community space where East Rockaway residents can discover new interests, make memories and connect with one another.
A hub for summer programming The East Rockaway Public Library gives children and families plenty of ways to stay busy, creative and engaged throughout the summer. Seasonal programming ranges from storytimes, crafts and scavenger hunts to STEM activities, games, reading challenges and programs that bring different age groups together. The library also welcomes outside organizations for special educational experiences, including a June visit from the Wildlife Center of Long Island, which introduced children to rescued native animals and taught them about wildlife rehabilitation and conservation. With activities geared toward preschoolers, elementary-age children and tweens, the library offers families opportunities to read, create, explore and learn together while school is out. Courtesy East Rockaway Public Library Eileen and Tom Hagerman of the Wildlife Center of Long Island introduce Trixie, a rescued box turtle, while teaching children about native wildlife and animal rehabilitation in June.
Pajamas and Stories Storytime takes many forms at the East Rockaway Public Library, where books are often paired with music, movement, crafts and hands-on activities designed for young children. One longtime favorite is Pajama Storytime, an evening program that has returned to the library’s calendar over multiple summers and invites children to come dressed in their pajamas with a favorite stuffed animal. Books and Babies Even East Rockaway’s littlest residents have a place to meet new friends at the library. Mingling Munchkins, a recurring program for babies ages 6 to 23 months and their caregivers, provides a relaxed morning of play and socialization. Sessions give babies an opportunity to explore, interact and play alongside other children while their caregivers connect with other local families. The program is part of the East Rockaway Public Library’s larger lineup for babies and preschoolers, which also includes music and movement, reading stories together, building activities, art and open-play programs. In many ways, putting out a newspaper each week is an interactive process. We need your participation to do our job, so we offer you, our readers, a reminder of how and when to reach us. For news of upcoming events sponsored by civic, service, religious or community organizations, the deadline is 10 a.m. the Friday before publication. We also welcome news of your family life, your business life and your social life. We accept obituaries and Neighbors in the News items, including awards, honors, births, graduations, marriages and promotions. These items are printed at no charge to you. We value your opinions, and provide a forum for them in our popular Letters to the Editor space. Letters are accepted until 5 p.m. the Friday before publication, and should be no more than 350 words. The Herald also offers tours of it's Garden City headquarters and printing plant for schools, scouts and other community groups. To schedule a tour, contact Michael Romero at (516) 569-4000, Ext. 235, or email mromero@liherald.com. Kayla Dechter • Reporter
