publisher hello, residents! We are proud to present our annual Lynbrook/ East Rockaway Guide, a special supplement to the Lynbrook/East Rockaway Herald. Those of us who live here know that Lynbrook and East Rockaway are wonderful places. In this handy guide, you’ll find many of the organizations and institutions that make them so very special. The purpose of the Guide is to expand upon what the Herald does each week: describe and celebrate these unique communities and their many services Stuart and organizations. It also serves as a comprehenRichner sive look at all the communities have to offer for newcomers, as well as a convenient reference guide for longtime residents and business leaders. Lynbrook and East Rockaway are thriving. Lynbrook continues to focus on downtown revitalization. Lynbrook just opened a new, state-of-the-art movie theater on Merrick Road, and continues to encourage interesting businesses to open on Atlantic Avenue and across other parts of the village. Nearly six years after Hurricane Sandy, East Rockaway has shown its resiliency through the recovery and improvements to its waterfront, downtown, schools and residential areas, including the growth of new businesses on the waterfront. And after our village finances received a multi-level bond upgrade to its highest rating in recent memory, we were then awarded a coveted “no fiscal stress” designation by the state’s comptroller — a key indicator of our government’s fiscal strength and stability. My Village Hall administration is also focused on refurbishing local infrastructure this year. The Baisley Avenue area project was completed by the village, which was a $3.2 million endeavor funded by the state and the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery to harden village properties. A giant Lawson Avenue project continues along that corridor as well. East Rockaway continues to thrive. We’re a great place for any new homeowner or senior. You’re always welcome here. A small village with plenty of charm East Rockaway is a one-square-mile village comprised of residential homes, apartments, condos and waterfront cottages. Its main business and shopping districts are on Main Street and Atlantic Avenue. The area is known for its ecletic styles of upscale houses, old-fashioned capes and newly raised homes that are still being reinforced against future storms after they were damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Originally named Near Rockaway, the village began as a shipping and trading center for Long Island’s South Shore. The location was ideal for ships because of its deep inland channels. The community prospered in shipping and milling over the years, even after several sales of the land. The village’s name was changed in 1869 to East Rockaway, and was incorporated in 1900, with Floyd Johnson as its president. At the time of incorporation, the village had a population of 969. According to a 2016 census estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau, East Rockaway has a population of about 9,800. The Village of East Rockaway is in the Town of Hempstead, and is adjacent to Lynbrook, Hewlett and Oceanside. The village is governed by a five-member elected board, including a mayor and four trustees. The area is protected by the 4th Precinct of the Nassau County Police Department, and the East Rockaway Auxiliary Police. Fire and ambulance services are provided by the all-volunteer East Rockaway Fire Department. Village businesses and individuals are welcome to join the East Rockaway Chamber of Commerce. Every summer, the village and the chamber co-host an open-air classic car show near Main Street. Local houses of worship include St. Raymond’s Catholic Church, Bethany Congregational Church, the Nazarene Church and the Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre. Many residents enjoy the Town of Hempstead’s Hewlett Point Beach, located in Bay Park, and the John Street Complex, which was renamed to honor late village activist Frank Pignataro in April. It includes facilities for baseball, basketball and flag football. The East Rockaway Recreation Department also runs many sports and recreational programs for children and adults. Each June, the East Rockaway Grist Mill Museum hosts its annual Huckleberry Frolic, an afternoon filled with games, food, live performances, street vendors and more to raise money for the museum. It is one of the most popular summer events in East Rockaway, usually attended by hundreds of people. In the winter, a holiday festival, including a tree and menorah lighting, are held on the grounds of Village Hall. The East Rockaway Public Library offers book and video lending and rentals, children’s programs and activities. Notable people from East Rockaway include Gary Giddins, screenplay writer for Bing Crosby’s “A Pocketful of Dreams”; Reid Gorecki, a former Major League Baseball player; and actors Brian Keith (“Family Affair”) and Don Murray, who co-starred with Marilyn Monroe in “Bus Stop.”

While sharing the same zip code as East Rockaway, Bay Park is governed by the Town of Hempstead. It sustained extensive damage to many of its homes when Hurricane Sandy hit the community on Oct. 29, 2012. The Bay Park Water Reclamation Facility, which was also damaged in Sandy, discharges 50 million gallons of treated sewage a day into Reynolds Channel — although a plan to use a 110-year-old aqueduct beneath Sunrise Highway to transport the sewage into the ocean is in the development stage. Bay Park is also home to a 96-acre park that shares the same name, and has been in the Nassau County park system since 1947. Located in the southwest corner of the county, the park offers a wealth of athletic fields and courts, bicycle paths and an outdoor roller rink. Newly designed since Hurricane Sandy, the park now boasts a new large playground, picnic area, spray pool and lots of room for running. There is also a nine-hole, par-30 golf course that is open from March to December. Overlooking Hewlett Bay, a fishing dock is open yearround, along with a launch ramp for boats or jet-skis. The park also offers a dog run with separate areas for big and small dogs. The run is located on the east side of the park. Hewlett Point Park offers a relaxing beach and picnic area overlooking Hewlett Bay. The park is at 130 Hewlett Point Ave. in Bay Park, and is open only to Town of Hempstead residents. Whether it’s outdoor summer concerts on the beach or swimming in the pool, there is plenty to do on the bay. Pool hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. from June 17 through Sept. 4. The community also has its own civic group, the Bay Park Civic Association, which meets regularly to discuss local issues and support its neighbors with their problems. We are very proud of our lovely village and what it has to offer its nearly 20,000 residents and those in the surrounding communities. The Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to enhancing local businesses and creating a vibrant downtown area for our residents and surrounding community members to enjoy. The recent development of the new Regal Alan Beach movie theater in downtown Lynbrook has created foot traffic that will enable Lynbrook’s downtown to thrive. The Recreation Center at Greis Park offers abundant recreational opportunities throughout the year for all ages. Lynbrook provides a warm and friendly family atmosphere while providing the amenities of a modern growing community. The Lynbrook Public Library does a great job of providing programs and workshops for all ages. Every Tuesday you can catch a free movie! Lynbrook was recently ranked the 24th safest place to live in New York state. Our residents are extremely fortunate to have a very dedicated Police Department that ensures Lynbrook is a safe community to live in and visit. The emergency services our fire department provides are second to none. The Lynbrook Building Department does an excellent job of ensuring that all construction and buildings within the village meet safety
requirements. The Department of Public Works is committed to maintaining and enhancing the life of Lynbrook residents. They do a phenomenal job ensuring our roads are safe and our village is beautiful. On behalf of the Village of Lynbrook board of trustees, the entire village staff, the village courts and myself, it is my honor and privilege to extend the warmest of greetings to you as you explore Lynbrook.

Lynbrook proclaims itself “a great place to live, work and play” and “the Village that leads the way!” The community certainly lives up to its claims. A charming village on Long Island’s South Shore, Lynbrook has a rich history dating back to the late 1700s when a small community of 40 houses was established near Merrick Road and Ocean Avenue, close to where the Rockville Cemetery is today. Around 1830, Wright Pearsall purchased land at Hempstead Avenue and Merrick Road, at the intersection that we today call the Five Corners. He opened a general store that became so widely known that the corners and the surrounding community soon became Pearsall’s Corners. Eventually, it was renamed Lynbrook because people vacationing from Brooklyn and New York City liked what they saw in Pearsall’s and decided to stay. The village was incorporated in 1911. According to a 2016 census estimate from the U.S. Census Bureau, Lynbrook has a population of about 19,567. The Village of Lynbrook is within the Town of Hempstead, and Lynbrook’s mayor is Alan Beach. Long Island Rail Road service to New York is available at the Lynbrook train station, off of Sunrise Highway. Government, Services, Organizations A five-member village board governs Lynbrook, including Beach, Deputy Mayor Hilary Becker and three trustees. Since 1912, Lynbrook has been served by the Lynbrook Police Department. headed by Chief Joseph Neve. Since 1879, the Lynbrook Volunteer Fire Department has served the village and is comprised of six firehouses. Lynbrook has its own Department of Public Works, which provides sanitation services. In 2008, three houses in Lynbrook were listed on the National Register of Historic Places: 251 Rocklyn Ave., 474 Ocean Ave. and 73 Grove St. Lynbrook also has many organizations, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Boy and Girl Scout troops, and Little League and other sports teams. The Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce works closely with the village. Together, they help plan the classic car show, pre-prom party on Atlantic Avenue, outdoor arts and crafts events, and other activities. The Lynbrook Community Chest is a charitable organization that provides assistance to Lynbrook residents who need help due to financial or economic hardship.

assau County’s 4th Precinct covers the Village of East Rockaway, as well as the communities of Inwood, Hewlett, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Neck, Woodsburgh, Hewlett Harbor, Woodmere, Cedarhurst, Lawrence, Bay Park, East Atlantic Beach, Atlantic Beach Estates, Oceanside, North Long Beach, Atlantic Beach, Island Park, Lido and Point Lookout.The precinct headquarters are at 1699 Broadway in Hewlett. The commanding officer is Joseph Barbieri. Its main divisions include patrol, detective and support services. It has a marine bureau, a robbery squad and a homicide squad, among other divisions.

Science teacher Brian Crowley said his favorite East Rockaway school tradition is Rock Rivalry, which is a class competition between grade levels that focuses on performances, athletics and academic competitions. The seniors won the coveted Silver Cup in March for their performance of “The Dual to Rule.”

What sets East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School apart from other schools? One of the things that sets East Rockaway apart from the rest of Nassau County is its size. I’ve had the opportunity to work with every student that passes through East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School in some capacity. Interacting with my students in the classroom as well as in the community helps to develop strong relationships that are the foundation for success. Why do you love teaching at East Rockaway? I work with the most wonderful

What is your favorite school tradition, and why? Rock Rivalry. Rock Rivalry could be described as a battle of the classes, but it’s so much more. For a two-month period, students dedicate all of their free time to preparing for a performance and visual arts presentation as well as an academic and athletic competition. The experiences students walk away with are invaluable life lessons. Friendships and memories created during Rock Rivalry last a lifetime.

Creating a family atmosphere at Lynbrook High School
Mary Kirby has been a Lynbrook High School English teacher since 1997. She recently spoke with the Herald about her experiences in the district as she prepares for the start of another school year. What sets Lynbrook High School apart from others? Lynbrook High School is one of a kind. It goes without saying that the students within LHS set it apart from other high schools. The administrators, teachers and staff are incredibly fortunate to come to a building each day with students who have a passion for all aspects of the school and most importantly, for learning. The environment at Lynbrook offers all students a true sense of belonging. Each of us has something to offer every student in the building,and that is because of the respect and genuine caring that is exhibited between the students and their teachers. We often reference LHS as a family, and it is and always has been. The coming together of all when someone in our community is in need reflects the true sense of family that is practiced each and every day. Why do you love teaching at Lynbrook? When I first came to teach English at Lynbrook in 1997, I really felt like I was home. As a new teacher, I never felt alone.

That was the culture and environment at Lynbrook High School, and it is still the same today. The teachers, administrators and staff members are always willing to offer advice — or lend a hand — with anything. This is how I was taught as an educator, and today, the staff continues to always support one another in order to make the students’ experiences as successful as possible. At the end of the day, we all have one goal: to help each and every student in the building achieve their greatest academic success. What is your favorite school tradition, and why? Every single month there is a tradi-
tion to look forward to at Lynbrook High School, and I honestly love them all. From Spirit Week, to pep rally to Homecoming in the fall to Human Relations’ Day in the winter, and Class Night in the spring, I never lose excitement here at Lynbrook. Night of the Pumpkins, the jazz concert, prom and graduation, I love it all. It is the tradition at LHS that has allowed for many alumni to decide to raise their own children in the Lynbrook School District. Parents want what is best for their children, and what they know is best is what they experienced as a student at LHS.

The Lynbrook High School class of 2018 had 226 graduates, led by valedictorian Dustin Mandell and salutatorian Jack Hunter. The graduates tossed their mortarboards at the end of their commencement ceremony at the Marion Street football field on June 22.

he Lynbrook School District includes most of the Village of Lynbrook and parts of the unincorporated areas of Lynbrook, as well as portions of East Rockaway, Hewlett, Hewlett Harbor and Valley Stream. The Lynbrook district comprises seven schools: Lynbrook Kindergarten Center, West End, Waverly Park and Marion Street elementary schools, Lynbrook North Middle School, Lynbrook South Middle School and Lynbrook High School. Lynbrook schools continue to move ahead with innovative programs that provide students with the tools needed to achieve success in college and the ever-changing workforce. The district has made it a priority to build a solid foundation in science, technology, engineering and math. Students continue to win scholarships, awards and accolades for academics and sports. Niche.com also named the district the seventh safest in the state last March. The Summer STEM Academy, now in its fifth year, continues to provide middle school students with an opportunity to explore their interests in video game design and robotics in a collaborative and creative environment. The One to World tablet program for sixth-graders, which was rolled out in 2015, has expanded to other grades and district administrators plan to expand it further in the future.

ast Rockaway’s two public elementary schools, Centre Avenue and Rhame Avenue, serve grades kindergarten to six in District No. 19. There is one junior-senior high school for grades seven to 12. Richard Schaffer will take over as prinicpal at the high school starting in the 2018-19 school year. St. Raymond’s Catholic School, comprised of students in pre-k through eighth grade, is also in East Rockaway. The western portion of East Rockaway is part of School District 20, the Lynbrook School District. Its Waverly Park Elementary School, which feeds into Lynbrook South Middle School, is in East Rockaway. In 2016, the Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded nearly $4.5 million to the East Rockaway School District for Sandy-related repairs and mitigation work at the high school. The administration is in the final year of its a five-year strategic plan to guide the district’s future, which it formulated with the help of the Strategic Planning Steering Committee. Annual school musicals and the inter-class competition known as Rock Rivalry are popular throughout the community. Its sports teams have earned Nassau County and Long Island titles.

he Lynbrook Recreation Department, at 55 Wilbur St. in Greis Park, offers a ton of fun options for kids to get moving — or to get their artistic abilities flowing. ynbrook and East Rockaway have plenty to keep you busy all year long. Their acres of parkland, bike trails, picnic and recreation areas provide something for everyone. Greis Park in Lynbrook boasts a lush trail for runners and bikers, called the Hudson Exercise Trail. The trail was built in 2010 on vacant land that was deeded to the Village of Lynbrook in 1989 by Nassau County, which had obtained it from the City of New York as part of the city’s effort to dispose of many unused parcels that it owned in the county. Before the 2010 improvements, the dirt paths of the heavily wooded area were used for decades for walking and bicycling. The improvements, spearheaded by then-mayor and now Assemblyman Brian Curran, included new landscaping, attractive lighting, seven exercise stations, benches and an asphalt path that follows the original half-mile dirt path loop, while still maintaining the natural flora of the area. Village officials are contemplating adding turf sports fields. The East Rockaway Grist Mill, in Memorial Park on Woods Avenue, is a 325-year-old mill that was burned by an arsonist in 1990 and was restored. Displays include an old fire-pump engine, period costumes, Indian and bay exhibits and store settings from the 19th to early 20th centuries. The museum is open on weekends from 1 to 5 p.m. in the sum-

Be sure to check out the mill’s annual Huckleberry Frolic, which occurs every June to kick of the summer with entertainment, food and more. Bay Park is a beautiful 96-acre park that offers a wealth of athletic fields and courts, bicycle paths and an outdoor roller rink. New since Hurricane Sandy, the park now boasts a large playground, picnic area, a spray pool and lots of room for running. There is also a nine-hole, par-30 golf course open from March to December. Overlooking Hewlett Bay, a fishing dock is open year-round, along with a launch ramp for your boat, Jet Ski or sailboat. The park also offers a dog run with separate areas for big and small dogs. The run is on the east side of the park by the athletic fields. Don’t forget to check out your local recreation centers in Lynbrook and East Rockaway to see what fun activities they have planned year-round. Popular programs include outdoor movies, free concerts and arts and crafts.

ach year, on a Saturday in early June, hundreds of people gather on the grass at Memorial Park in East Rockaway for one of the village’s biggest events of the year: the Huckleberry Frolic. Rides and vendors crowd the park as the mass of people mill about, enjoying the full day of activities and taking in the sites and sounds of this decades-old tradition. This iconic East Rockaway event dates back to 1969. “The Village of East Rockaway co-hosts the Huckleberry Frolic each year with the Grist Mill Committee in order to raise funds to support our Grist Mill Museum,” East Rockaway Mayor Bruno Romano said. “The event has transformed into so much more — an annual weekend of community, involving our local veterans, school, service and community organizations. The kick off event, parade and fair provide countless memories for East Rockaway residents.” Starting in 2018, the Frolic expanded into a two-day spectacle that features a slew of activities for families to enjoy, local vendors providing a variety of foods and drinks, and performances by music and dance groups from across the South Shore. The 2018 event began on a Friday night with a barbecue
and a concert. The next day, the usual activities of the Frolic took place, starting with the annual parade through the village. The procession includes performances by local groups, and concludes at Memorial Park, which is next to the historic Grist Mill Museum. From there, the event continues at the park with all of the children’s rides, food and activities, which often include a money booth, a petting zoo, video games, a candy zone and a scavenger hunt, among many other events. As of now, the Huckleberry Frolic is the only fundraiser organized by the Grist Mill Committee to support the museum. While that makes the Frolic important, as the Grist Mill Museum is the oldest building in Nassau County and a staple of East Rockaway, the Frolic has become a major event in its own right, one that the Village of East Rockaway has come to cherish as a time when community members come together for a day of collective fun. In June 2019, the Frolic will turn 50, and the plans have already begun, according to event organizer Charlene Fried. “We are looking forward to 2019’s 50th anniversary,” she said.

hen most Americans think of Memorial Day, they think of summer barbecues and a relaxing weekend by the beach. Before all of that fun in the sun begins, however, and before the pools are opened and the grills are ignited, the Village of Lynbrook sets aside time to host events that recognize the true purpose of Memorial Day: honoring and remembering those who served and died protecting the United States and its freedoms. The event comes in the form of Lynbrook’s annual Patriots’ Day celebration, an evening festival at Greis Park for the families of Lynbrook to enjoy. The celebration features several activities and performances, as well as lots of food, in commemoration of the many veterans who served to protect their country. “There’s something for everyone,” veteran Bill Marinaccio said. “There’s food, fun, music and an opportunity to say thank you to veterans for their service.” Some of the major highlights of the event include the mayor’s picnic and the VIP tent, where volunteers cook up meals for the former soldiers. The event also includes performances, and at this past May’s outing, the American Bombshells and magician John
Turdo dazzled the audience. At night, the ceremonies close with a fireworks show, which is usually attended by thousands of people. The next day, the morning of Memorial Day, a parade is held in honor of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Various groups and individuals from across the village march in the parade, including the Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce, Lynbrook Fire Department, Lynbrook Little League and many veterans, including those from local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars groups. “It’s a salute to veterans and a reminder that there are those that gave it all for their country,” Marinaccio said. Together, these two events serve as Lynbrook’s way of setting aside time right before the summer season starts to remember those who gave their lives to protect American freedoms, in a way that is commemorative, meaningful, and enjoyable for Lynbrook residents and families. In 2019, Patriots’ Day is scheduled for Sunday, May 26, and the Memorial Day festivities are slated for Monday, May 27.

Town & County Nassau County Nassau County is governed by an elected Legislature, which is comprised of members from 19 districts. It includes an independent budget director who advises the Legislature on spending and revenue matters. Residents may submit petitions for proposed laws that legislators must consider. Town of Hempstead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Democrat Laura Gillen — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. Lynbrook is open for business!
T
he Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with village officials, has embarked on a tremendous undertaking — the renovation and restoration of our beautiful village. With the Carol A. Burak opening of Regal Cinemas 13, we see an upward swing of people bustling about the downtown area, either shopping or dining out with their families. This facility has modernized Lynbrook and has brought us in to the 21st century. Just walk along Atlantic Avenue and you will hear the sweet sound of music being piped into the area from midday until the early evening. The village has also applied for a downtown revitalization initiative grant, which would provide Lynbrook the opportunity to enhance and grow its economic development. Many properties are being studied for renovation and/or refurbishing, which will modernize the business community.
One very big plus for our village is that we are a transportation hub, with the Long Island Rail Road close by and Manhattan just 30 minutes away by rail. Greis Veterans Memorial Park is also being studied to make it more family-friendly and will give our young people more access to sports and fun activities. Yes, Lynbrook is open for business, and we encourage everyone to live, work and play in this fabulous community. To coin an old expression, “Lynbrook is the Village that leads the way!”
