LETTER

Who is Chuck Close? hen I fir first heard the name Chuck Close several years ago, I gave a blank stare. Af After a few years as a journalist in Long Beach, I could rattle off the names o of local surfers and politicians with ease, but someone who has been described as one of the most important artists of our time? I was clueless.

Well, it turns out he lives right here in town, as a number of residents were quick to inform me, and we’re happy to say that Close agreed to an exclusive interview with our talented writer Brian Stieglitz, who had the pleasure of visiting the artist in his West End home and discussed his life in town, his new art installation that graces the Second Avenue subway and why he prefers Long Beach to the Hamptons.

Elsewhere, we caught up with singer and songwriter Alexandra Starr, who recently filmed her first music video for her new indie pop track “Lit” at Magnolia Boulevard beach. Starr, who has performed alongside Wyclef Jean, Colbie Caillat and others, is at work on an upcoming EP and said that the video marked an important step in her career.

We’re also proud to feature Long Beach’s own Charlie McAvoy, who spoke to writer Ben Strack fresh off his debut in the National Hockey League playoffs in April. The 19-year-old Boston Bruins defenseman tallied three assists during the stretch and is busy preparing for next season.

Long Beach resident and Beach Local Café owner Sean Sullivan, meanwhile, spoke to us about how his trips to some of the world’s top surfing spots inspired his menu at the Grand Boulevard eatery on the boardwalk, and reflects on his volunteer efforts with Project Pay if Forward after Hurricane Sandy.

And Long Trunks, the popular local clothing label known for its iconic “Bring on the Elephants” apparel, launched as a symbol of hope and resilience after the storm, is back with new designs created by South Shore high school students who competed for $2,000 in prize money.

We’ve also included our roundup of the many events that Long Beach is known for, from the popular Michelle O’Neill Volleyball Tournament to the Long Beach International Film Festival. New this year is the NY Fit Fest at Riverside Boulevard beach, part of a weekend of fitness events in September promoting health and wellness.

I never really left; I’m part of this community. I lived in Long Beach for more than 20 years, and it’s nearly impossible to get the Long Beach sand out of your shoes. I’ve served as a lifeguard, EMT/ paramedic and as department surgeon for Long Beach ďŹ re and police.

HOW HAVE YOUR EXPERIENCES SHAPED YOU?

When I see a patient in the Emergency Department, I can picture that accident because I’ve had on-scene experience. I see a lot of beach-related injuries as well as heart attacks and strokes. I work well with our ďŹ rst responders because I was one.

WHAT DOES THIS COMMUNITY MEAN TO YOU?

When patients come into the Emergency Department, they say, “Dr. Williamson, I’m so glad you’re here!â€? or, “You treated me and my family members in the past, and I feel conďŹ dent in the care.â€? They trust that I’m going to give them expert care.

The watersports center, located at 10 Broadway in Island Park, is open from early May until the end of September. It offers lessons for beginners and sessions for wake surfing, wake-boarding, water-skiing, tubing, clamming and crabbing. Visit the West End You never know which famous musician might pop into places like the Inn to perform. In July alone, Philadelphiabased singer and guitarist G. Love, pictured, brought his blend of blues, folk and hip-hop grooves to the popular West End bar, followed days later by a surprise performance by rockers Taking Back Sunday. A Q&A with surfer and Beach Local Café owner Sean Sullivan an

By Anthony Rifilato Long Beach resident Sean Sullivan grew up surfing breaks in town and around the world.

So when the local business owner opened his new Grand Boulevard eatery, Beach Local Café, at one of the city’s new boardwalk concessions last year, he created a fun and inspired menu consisting of his favorite dishes that he picked up during his trips to some of the world’s top surfing destinations.

The former Swingbellys owner is also well-known for his volunteer efforts after Hurricane Sandy and as a member of Project Pay it Forward, a group that he helped launch with the Long Beach Surfer’s Association, Earth Arts and the Janet Slavin law firm to help storm-ravaged businesses rebuild.

Long Beach Magazine recently caught up with Sullivan, who spoke about the inspiration for his menu, the response to the new boardwalk eateries from residents and visitors, and his perseverance after the storm.

LB Mag: How long have you lived in Long Beach, and what was appealing about opening shop on the boardwalk?

Sullivan: I’ve lived in Long Beach for over 20 years and the best part about opening on the boardwalk is going to work at my favorite beach everyday.

How did that influence your menu?

Sullivan: Our specialties are based on the local flavor of some of my favorite surf breaks around the world.

LB Mag: What are some of your most popular dishes?

Sullivan: I’d say our most popular is Haole Greg’s Taco Tour. That one is based on a trip I took to Kauai a few years ago. There’s a guy on the island named Haole Greg that not only played surf guide for us while we were there, but also took us on a tour

of all the best tacos Kauai has at to offer. It was really a great experience.

LB Mag: We hear people are raving about the addition of ice cream and new smoothiess this vors summer. What kinds of flavors are featured?

Sullivan: The addition of Max ge & Mina’s ice cream is a huge ke hit this summer. They make ike a bunch of wacky flavors like Cookie Monster, Sponge Bob and Cap’n Crunch Cookiess & Cream — really good stuff.f. dback LB Mag: What has the feedback been like from locals and visitors about Beach Local and thee other oardnew concessions on the boardwalk, especially since they all ptions offer more unique food options than in the past?

Sullivan: Overall, people have ve been really receptive to the m to new concessions. They seem hat all love the convenience and that g good the concessions are offering menus. The only complaintss I’ve ere’s heard from guests is that there’ eir no adult beverages with their meal.

Sullivan: With Project Pay it Forward, everyone in the group was just grateful that we were in a position to help our community. It was a good outlet for all the residents to be able to help each other. I’m really proud to have a been a part of it, and I got exceptionally lucky that it brought together a great group of people that I’m happy to call my best friends today.

Sullivan: The residents of Long Beach are a resilient crew. It’s the kind of place where you know your neighbors by name, and everyone came together after Sandy to help each other

Boardwalk bites Summer is in full swing at the new eateries

By Jenna Bloomer Four years after Long Beach native Billy Crystal appeared on the new boardwalk and filmed a commercial to promote his hometown in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, residents and local officials say the rebuilt 2.2-mile span offers more amenities and food options than ever before.

Coming on the heels of the Shoregasboard food truck court on RiverRiver side Boulevard, the city introduced new comfort stations and concessions along the boardwalk last year, and the new eateries offer beachgoers the option to experience eclectic menus that many residents and foodies are lauding. Not all of the eateries opened in time for the start of the last summer season but this year, the businesses kicked off early and are offering new fare and expanded menus.

City Council Vice President Anthony Eramo says Long Beach not only has more food options and extensive menus, but food vendors have added more seating areas and palm trees around their concessions and trucks.

“The newly refurbished concessions, who have updated and added to their menus, invite more people to long beach, over all improving people’s stay on the beach,” Eramo said. “It’s becoming a main stay for beachgoers.“ Here is the low-down on everything you should try on the boardwalk before summer comes to an end.

An artist in a ‘very special place’ Renowned artist Chuck Close is proud to call Long Beach home

huck Close sat in the studio of his West End home overlooking the ocean, with a palette fastened onto the arms of his wheelchair.

He mixed a diluted shade of yellow before approaching a canvas that was larger than the artist himself. Staring back at him was an unfinished portrait of the artist Fred Wilson on a grid filled with purple, magenta and gray boxes.

According to Close, gray is the hardest color for him to mix on a palette.“I like how complicated it is,” he said.

The canvas hung on a mechanical easel and, when Close stepped on a lever beneath, it moved up and down so as to be within his reach.

Close, 77, originally from Monroe, Wash., worked as an art teacher at a number of universities before gaining fame as an artist in 1967 in Manhattan’s SoHo. In 1988, in what Close refers to as “the event,” the artist suffered a spinal artery collapse, and has been confined to a wheelchair ever since. So he adapted his style to his condition.

Those who might not be familiar with Close may have seen his massive portraits in everything from art museums to subways. Art lovers recognize Close as a pioneer in the photo-derived art movement who is considered one of the most important artists of our time.

Composer Phillip Glass, Close’s longtime friend, wrote a musical portrait of the artist in 2005, and President Obama appointed him to the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities.

Most recently, Close made headlines in January when the Metropolitan Transportation Authority unveiled an ambitious contemporary art project for the new Second Avenue subway that featured several of his works.

The multiculturalism that Close said he admires about Long Beach can be seen in his 9-foot-tall mosaics on the walls of what is virtually an underground art gallery on 86th Street. Many of the portraits are of people whom Close knows personally, including Glass, musician Lou Reed

3 and artist Cindy Sherman. There are also two self-portraits.“[Which is] too much of me,” Close said.

He said he wanted his subway paintings to represent the different people and cultures of Manhattan.

“That was my idea of how to make something socially relevant,” he added.

At home in Long Beach Close designed his home five years ago to accommodate his neartotal paralysis, he told Long Beach Magazine as he worked on the portrait of Wilson.

In addition to making his home handicapped-accessible, it also suits his signature painting style. The artist said that he began creating oversized portraits to challenge the way in which viewers experience reality.

“I wanted to make [a painting] so big that you couldn’t readily see it as a whole... [to] sort of turn the face into a landscape experience,” he said.

Roughly a year before he moved to Long Beach, Close was hospitalized with a near-fatal case of pneumonia.

After 10 days without showing signs

of recovery, he said, he begged his doctor to let him go outside.

“If I can get out of here and get into the sun, I think I can bake this out of me,” he recalled saying.

He took a plane to Miami, where he ultimately recovered from the illness. He spent the next two winters there and eventually bought a beachfront condo, where he spends his winters.

“I love it there,” he said.“The richest people rub elbows with the poorest people.”

Close said that he also found diversity in Long Beach among the firefighters, police, office workers and artists.

“The same ocean that splashes up on the Hamptons is splashing up here,” said Close, who had owned a home in the Hamptons since 1973.

“But this is a working-class town — it’s the Hamptons without all the a******s.”

A portrait of the artist Since moving to Long Beach, Close said,“I don’t think I’ve ever felt more respected as an artist.”

He said that Long Beach is a “very special place” to him and he enjoys dining in the area. He added that he can greet anyone he sees on the street, and is often recognized — and fawned over — by Long Beach residents.

Once criticized as being a narcissistic artist, Close said that he treats himself like any other subject he has painted. He just so happens to be around more, he said, and therefore becomes his own subject most often.

He completes roughly three paintings a year — one life-size, one far smaller and a third in between. He works in his Long Beach home with a number of assistants and nurses.

According to Close, each of his exhibitions has at least one self-portrait.“I don’t know that I’ve learned anything about myself,” he said.“You know it’s not therapy; I have therapy for therapy. I don’t make art for therapy.”

When Close was asked by the MTA to create portraits for the Second Avenue subway, he said he was told that more people have already seen his work in the subway than at all of his gallery and museum shows combined. “I think that’s pretty neat,” he said.

With his paintings more accessible to the public these days, Close said that he feels he has found a way to reach a new generation.

Those who wouldn’t typically see his paintings at a museum or art gallery are able to see — and touch — the pieces after coming off the subway.

This resonates with the artist, given that he emerged as a noteworthy figure during the height of the photorealism movement in the mid-1960s. At the time, artists were moving away from abstract expressionism to more realistic paintings.

The goal was to show the deliberate and intricate process of creating art, at a time when many Americans were caught up in the instant gratification of point-and-shoot photography.

“I don’t want to look at the world through a camera,” Close said.“I use a camera to jot down information that I use later in a painting or a print.”

Lighting up Long Beach Musician Alexandra Starr films her first music video in town for “Lit”

By Jenna Bloomer Long Beach singer and songwriter Alexandra Starr, 21, took the next step in her music career on June 26 when she filmed her first music video in her hometown.

The video was for her second single, “Lit,” an upbeat pop-dance track.

The video was filmed on the beach at Magnolia Boulevard, where Starr grew up, and was organized in six days by Starr and her manager, Christina Cestaro. The production featured around 15 dancers from Pace University with choreography from Evan Lacombe.

“Lit” was released on July 1, and Starr is currently working on her first EP. She recently released the song “I See It All,” a track that boasts a pulsating and danceable drumbeat where electronic keys flourish behind Starr’s lyrics expressing confidence.

“A lot of the songs on my EP coming out are very emotional and personal so for this song, I wanted to make something where you don’t have to think, you can just dance,” Starr said.

The singer, actress and model discovered her love for music at the age of 4, when she started piano lessons; she fell in love with guitar soon after that and ultimately found her passion for singing. Today, she is a talented musician, playing a variety of instruments from ukelele to bass guitar.

“Music was there for me when no one else was,” Starr said. “I had trouble fitting in and when I didn’t have anyone, I had my guitar.”

Since the age of 11, Starr has been working toward creating a name for herself in the music industry, and she’s also known for her introspective, acoustic songs. She

started out playing the role of David Wolff’s girlfriend on the Nickelodeon show the “Naked Brothers Band,” and since then has appeared on various Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network programs. She has performed alongside Wyclef Jean, Colbie Caillat, and most recently, Aaron Carter. Starr, now attends Pace University, but continues to perform shows on Long Island and in New York City and other areas.

The video shoot was one of the biggest days of Starr’s career, she said. Starr was surrounded by her entire support system, ranging from her hairdresser to her manager and mother, who is her biggest inspiration, she explained.

“She is the person who kept pushing me to be the best I could be,” Starr said of her mom. “There were several times I wanted to give up music, but it is the smile on her face when I sing something or create something that inspires me to keep doing this.”

Starr’s goal is to have people relate to her music, to make them feel as if they are not alone; she wants her music to help people the way music

has helped her throughout her life.

“My ultimate goal is to make music that people love and can relate to whether it’s crying their eyes out with me or dancing their butts off,” Starr said, “I want people to know that although I can’t physically be there for them, my music is.”

McAvoy eyeing ‘unbelievable’ rookie year The Long Beach native impresses in NHL debut

By Ben Strack Fresh off his debut in the playoffs of the National Hockey League last April — and competing for Team USA in the Ice Hockey World Championship in May — Long Beach’s Charlie McAvoy is busy preparing for next season.

McAvoy, 19, who grew up on the barrier island and spent a year at Long Beach High School, played two years for Boston University before he was selected 14th overall in last year’s NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins.

His first time on the ice wearing black and gold came in Game 1 of the first round — a 2-1 victory against the Ottawa Senators — during which the defenseman logged the second most ice time on the team.

Though the Bruins would lose the series in six games, McAvoy tallied three assists during the stretch, offering a glimpse of what he is capable of.

“It was definitely an unbelievable experience,” McAvoy said, adding that it’s important not to get complacent. “…I’m really just focused on just doing

everything I can this offseason to make sure that starting next year I’ll have an unbelievable rookie year.”

Though McAvoy decided to leave college after two years, he is still a part-time student. After the World Championship in France and Germany, McAvoy began summer classes at BU, which concluded at the end of June. With about a year and a half of credits left, he plans to take courses periodically to ultimately earn a degree in communications.

“It gets a bit stressful sometimes when you’re trying to work out, you’re trying to skate, you’re trying to do all of these things and you’ve got class piled on top of it, but it’s worth it,” McAvoy said.

He returned to Long Beach for about a week in early July, where he was able to unwind with family and friends, and even hit the beach. A surfer for much of his life, McAvoy paddled into the Atlantic with his father and two sisters, he said, and encouraged his cousins

who had never been on a board before to try it out too. He also spent an evening at Long Beach Ice Arena for a more laid-back skate than he has experienced in recent months.

“It’s an aspect that I don’t really get very much, except for when I’m home,” McAvoy said of the beach time with family, “but when I’m home, I definitely make the most of it.”

The 6-foot-1, 212-pound defenseman is back in Beantown, where he works out of Boston University to get his body prepared for an 82-game NHL schedule — a season about twice as long as in college — filled with higher-level, more physical hockey.

Though his Bruins teammates have been very welcoming and friendships with the pros are sprouting, he said, seeing Coach David Quinn and the other familiar faces at BU is a great perk while training. “…It makes it special being around the rink all the time over there, and it’s good to know that I’ll have those people through-

out my career for however long that lasts, and throughout the rest of my life,” McAvoy said.

Like his Terriers family, he knows the Long Beach community is backing him too, even though, like McAvoy, many were raised to be Rangers fans. “…It’s always nice to hear from those people and to talk to them and kind of take a step back and realize that you’re playing at the highest level,” he said of his friends and family in Long Beach, where he plans to return a few more times this summer before training camp starts up.

“Sometimes that can be a bit stressful within itself, but to have that support system and know that I have these great people behind me, it’s very rewarding.”

Trunk show Long Trunks are back with new, innovative designs

By Anthony Rifilato When Long Beach’s founder, Senator William H. Reynolds, built the original boardwalk in 1907, he brought in elephants to help construct the 2.2-mile span and historic photos of the animals carrying large pieces of lumber have since become part of the local folklore. Turned out that the elephants were only used as a publicity stunt, but the legend has endured for decades.

The myth was not lost on the founders of Long Trunks.

The local clothing start-up company has helped raise more than $30,000 for a number of organizations and local businesses after Hurricane Sandy through sales of its iconic “Bring on the Elephants” and “Defend Long Beach” apparel to symbolize hope and perseverance.

Long Trunks have grown in popularity since the storm, and the lifestyle brand has continued to release a number of unique designs through various mediums including clothing, apparel, accessories and artwork.

“I think what sets us apart is that we started as a way to give back, and we always want to keep that as a model of our business,” said Long Beach resident and partner Jeb Bellsey.

These days, owners Danny Fischer, Dave Yolinsky, Jesse Wilson and Bellsey are focused on running an eco-friendly fashion company with apparel featuring innovative designs that capture the spirit of Long Beach.

“When you’re going around and see someone with a Long Trunks L.B. hat — you get that feeling that you’re a part of the family,” Bellsey said. “While we love and always want to maintain our Long Beach presence, we would like to expand beyond the barrier island. We wanted this to be a brand that grows — and the more we grow the more we can contribute in the way of charity.”

Long Trunks has held design contests over the years that were open to Long Beach High School students to generate new ideas for its T-shirts and other gear.

This year, the company took

it a step further and opened its third competition to students outside of Long Beach, which generated more than 150 design submissions from 50 students at Long Beach, Baldwin, Oceanside and Valley Stream high schools —all competing for $2,000 in prize money. The first-place winner was a Baldwin High student who received a $1,000 prize, and Long Trunks awarded an additional $500 to the school’s art department for supplies.

“All of the winning designs were incorporated into this year’s summer line of clothing and accessories,” said Yolinsky. “Long Trunks has — and always will be — a business deeply intertwined with its community.”

“Moving forward, we plan on really having the design competition as a vehicle to generate our designs and attract new customers each year,” Bellsey said.

As the sweltering sun set beyond the horizon, a cool, swift breeze was felt through the early evening, carrying with it a sense of calm and solidarity.

The streets of Long Beach were ďŹ lled with people waving rainbow ďŹ&#x201A;ags last month, as residents and visitors marched in the Rise with Pride parade, which had previously taken place in Huntington. The month of June celebrates pride in Long Island and gives local LGBT groups a cause to celebrate.

Among more than 85 organizations that marched, coordinators said, were Planned Parenthood, United Food and Commercial Workers OUTreach, advocacy group PFLAG Long Island, the Floral Park Memorial High School Gay-Straight Alliance club and at least 25 other schools from around the Island.

The concert at Long Beach Boulevard beach rounded out the last day of Pride on the Beach, a three-day festival organized by the LGBT Network that attracted about 30,000 people, with at least 5,000 people marching in the parade, city ofďŹ cials and organizers said.

The event also included a beach party, a carnival, a 5K, a Shabbat service and more.

NY Fit Fest and Flex on the Beach events are shaping up summer

By Bridget Downes A weekend of fitness is coming to Long Beach in September. Between the first-ever NY Fit Fest and the returning Flex on the Beach, there will be no shortage of activities for fitness enthusiasts of all skill levels.

Join world-renowned Olympic athletes, celebrities and trainers at NY Fit Fest on Sunday, Sept. 17 who will lead activities ranging from sunrise yoga, cycling, meditation, dancing and Zumba to surfing, CrossFit, boot camps and boxing.

The festival at Riverside Boulevard and other locations will feature lectures, nutrition workshops and a vendor village on the beach that will showcase booths that promote health, beauty and wellness.

“They’re two events that bring together people who share the love of fitness and health,” Dodd said.

“Long Beach is a really great place,” Morales added. “It’s a very active community. So why wouldn’t we be doing Zumba with the ocean in the background?”

The “Build Up” on West Beech Innovative design changes the face of Westholme

By Alyssa Seidman hen business partners Jeffrey Ramirez, John Winberry, and Adam Wanaselja wanted to enter the local real estate market with sustainable, concept-driven residential design they needed to find the right clientele who would understand and be willing to commit to the concept.

And so began Build Up, a development firm dedicated to modernizing the areas surrounding Long Island’s “walkable” downtowns with architecture designed to enhance resident’s lives and strengthen communities.

“I had lived [in Long Beach] for eight years, so I had an understanding of the neighborhood and the people,” said Wanaselja.“Long Beach is its own city, with a smaller building department that’s easier to deal with when getting approvals. They also don’t have a rigorous architectural review board, and they’re more willing to let you build aggressive designs there than other jurisdictions on the island.”

“We hadn’t yet created a singlefamily modern home in a walkable downtown, and we felt that was strongly lacking in Long Beach,”Winberry said. “Since we’ve done this first house [on West Beech Street], we’ve

already received multiple projects, so weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re excited with the feedback that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been getting.â&#x20AC;?

Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve introduced their concept here, at 718 West Beech St., just steps away from both the boardwalk and the bustling West End. The four-bedroom, three and-a-half-bath home has been thoughtfully conceived with numerous amenities, both inside and out, including a home elevator and elevated ceilings. The homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contemporary design features an open floor plan, ocean views and a roof deck (equipped for solar panels) with sweeping, panoramic views of the ocean and the boardwalk, along with multiple balconies calibrated according to the sunâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s path.

The spacious light-filled master suite on the second floor is a tranquil retreat, with floorto-ceiling windows, opening up to a private covered balcony. On the main level â&#x20AC;&#x201D; at the heart of the homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s open floor plan â&#x20AC;&#x201D; is the finely crafted kitchen that commands attention with 15 feet of continuous cabinetry and a full height pantry wall. It connects to

the living/dining area.

The homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most unique aspect, according to Winberry, is its sustainable design.â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our base concept was centralizing all the main elements of the house [plumbing, HVAC]. Once we did that we freed up the entire façade to allow for maximal [use of the] open floor plan. From there we were able to overlay a lot of the ideas we had discussed in the studio, which is the sunâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s path and how it affects the architecture we design in order to achieve sustainable cooling.â&#x20AC;?

That process involved tracking what the sun was doing in certain spaces within the home. By study-

ing the sunâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s path, the team calculated how to include overhangs and passive shading devices in their design in order to block sunlight from coming in during the summer, and allow it to come through during winter.

Winberry and his 6 partners are excited to introduce their concept of sustainable cooling and impactful design to residents here. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been fun to see it in real time, and really work it out. We believe that if we can implement these basic ideas in a smart way, then the house reacts with the neighborhood in a really positive way,â&#x20AC;? Winberry said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a youthfulness in Long Beach that the building responds to. The kind of person that we are looking to move in to that house is [going to be] open to that sort of playful design,â&#x20AC;?

Wansajela added.

West Beech is a unique project, not only in its design, location

to the beach and within the community, but in how it was developed. The UP Studio, through its offshoot Build Up, served as architects, interior and brand designers while also acting as the developer for the project.

The firmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next project is set to break ground in the coming weeks. Located on Connecticut Avenue, just two houses away from the water, its design elements will be similar to the West Beech property. It is targeted to be completed by the end of this year.
