appy holidays, Long Beach!

I first met Cliff Skudin, co-owner of Skudin Surf, seven years ago at Long Beach Boulevard beach while covering an event for the Long Beach Herald. His nonprofit, Surf for All, was holding a surf outing for kids with a range of physical and developmental disabilities.

My only real knowledge of surfing then came from the movies “Point Break” and “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” and I was aware that Gerry Lopez, who co-starred in “Conan the Barbarian,” was a famous surfer.

Interviewing Cliff and his brother, Will, a professional big-waver surfer, over the years, as well as others in town, dispelled any stereotypes I might have had about surfing — and surfers. Cliff even encouraged me to get on a board, and the handful of outings I had at Skudin Surf were incredible, life-changing experiences. After Hurricane Sandy, seeing how the surf community came together in remarkable ways to help rebuild their town was truly inspiring.

We are proud to continue writing about the Skudins, who have accomplished so much over the years — both are currently on waiting periods to compete in professional big-wave surf contests around the world. Will became the first surfer from the Northeast to clinch a spot in this year’s elite Big Wave World Tour, and Cliff is competing in two pro-am events: the Punta Galea Challenge in Spain and the Nelscott Reef Big Wave Classic in Oregon.

Also in this issue, writer Ben Strack caught up with Long Beach’s own Charlie McAvoy, who debuted for the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Playoffs last April, and is now navigating his first full season in the National Hockey League — he scored his first career goal in October. McAvoy, who was raised a Rangers fan, played his first NHL game at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 8, which he called his favorite building growing up.

In keeping with the holiday season, we have also included our roundup of popular events and businesses to support the “Shop Local, Shop Long Beach” movement. Five years after Sandy, we remind ourselves of the main goal we had for the magazine — to illustrate that Long Beach was open for business after the storm, and highlight the many shops, restaurants and people in town who give the barrier island its unique character.

The magazine was edited and designed by the Herald’s award-winning staff, and we tried to keep it fun and upbeat. We’d like to thank all of the residents and businesses who agreed to participate. We hope you enjoy it. Again, happy holidays!

Luke Hamlet founded this staple store back in 1982. For the past three decades, Long Beach Surf Shop has been the go-to for the area’s surfing community. What sets the family-owned business apart, Hamlet said, is its wide selection of surfboards — over 500 to be exact.

L.B. Surf supplies thicker, winterized wetsuits and surfing gloves and boots for those still craving the swells through the winter. Also in stock are female-fitted, camouflage print sweatshirts and sweatpants printed with L.B.’s logo. Hamlet said the store

also carries beanies and winter jackets by brands like Patagonia.

He added that the shop still keeps its summer stock on the racks for residents looking to buy a last-minute bikini for vacation. “For people going away, we still keep a good selection of vacation wear,” Hamlet said.

Although just over a year old, the Codfish Cowboy is a gift boutique that has become a popular spot in town and offers items ranging from home goods to apparel celebrating Long Beach pride.

“There has been a great amount of community support, with so much positive feedback,” said owner Angela Skudin.

Originally from Oklahoma, Skudin wanted to bring her “Midwestern sass to the bustling beach town,” and with it brought “original, handcrafted collections.” Codfish Cowboy is reminiscent of the mom and pop stores Skudin frequented in her home state, but the brands that line the shelves come from individual designers worldwide.

“We cover every [demographic], and provide hometown pricing,” Skudin said.

Cozy up to The Cabana this winter The West End eatery is known for its music, tacos and laidback atmosphere

BY ALYSSA SEIDMAN The Cabana has held its spot on West Beech Street for more than a decade, and continues to attract locals and visitors to the barrier island.

Owner Bob Johnson said the restaurant is known for its live music, which has helped the eatery, at 1034 W. Beech St., develop a nightlife crowd, with popular performers such as Jahstix and Bryce Larsen.

“We give local musicians the opportunity to perform here, and that helps draw people from other neighborhoods like East Rockaway, Island Park and Point Lookout,” he said. “The music brings a lot of customers during the off-season.”

Johnson said another popular draw that has helped the business thrive in the winter months is the restaurant’s heated seating area, which features paneled garage doors that open in the summer.

“The addition of that area offers a great option for diners to enjoy a meal in a warm, cozy setting with the feel of sitting outside,” he said. “It’s added a lot to the business.”

Johnson said the combination of serving consistently good food with strong drink concepts has kept customers coming back.

“A lot of West End businesses close down this time of year, and the local people need options,” he said. “When you come here, you’re going to get more than your money’s worth; you’re getting a laidback, casual dining experience with great music and big plates done to the extreme.”

Speaking of food, The Cabana’s staple special is its Taco Tuesday “mega event” that Johnson said is “ridiculously popular year-round.”

Head chef Margaret Richards, however, whips up more than just tacos in the kitchen. Richards began offering seasonal soups such as black bean, Mexican seafood, and butternut squash.

She added that since striped bass is in season, she’s been using the item in the popular fish tacos. And for dessert, The Cabana offers piping hot churros dusted with cinnamon sugar and served with chocolate sauce.

“It’s a unique place,” Johnson said. “You feel at ease when you’re here; everyone is just relaxed and enjoying themselves — it even feels as if the staff is part of the crowd.”

The Long Beach Christmas Angel The Long Beach Christmas Angel will hold its annual holiday party and fundraiser on Dec. 8 at Junction, at 20 W. Park Ave. Proceeds from the event benefit the Long Beach-based nonprofit organization, which is dedicated to improving the lives of families who are experiencing financial difficulties within the Long Beach School District.

After Hurricane Sandy, the group saw an obvious need in the community and extended its help to victims of the storm. The event also honors local residents and community/ youth organizations. West End Kennedy Electric Plaza Light Parade Christmas In conjunction with the Tree West End Merchants and the West End Neighbors, Lighting the city will host the 5th annual Electric Light Parade on Dec. 9. Antique cars, fire trucks, bicycles and floats will be wrapped in Christmas lights for the festive holiday parade.

Restaurants will be offering specials and activities for children after the parade and hot chocolate will be served throughout the parade route. Celebrate the holiday season at the city’s annual Kennedy Plaza Christmas Tree Lighting on Friday, Dec. 1. Landmarks Holiday Candlelight House Tour

The Long Beach Island Landmarks Association will host their Holiday Candlelight House Tour on Dec. 16 at 4 p.m. beginning at Kennedy Plaza. The 19-year-old Long Beach native is a mainstay for Bruins

BY BEN STRACK The Boston Bruins glided down their home ice with steam late in the second period of their season opener, entering the Nashville Predators’ zone looking to add to a one-goal lead. David Krejci, skating along the boards with the puck, threw one to the middle of the ice, where Long Beach’s own Charlie McAvoy trailed. Handling the feed from his teammate, the 19-year-old flicked a wrist shot into the back of the net.

That score on Oct. 5, McAvoy’s first career goal in the National Hockey League, was surreal, he told the Herald earlier this month.

“It was unbelievable,” he said. “I knew it was going to come sooner or later, but to have it come that early was pretty special. It was definitely awesome and something I’ll remember forever.”

McAvoy, who grew up on the barrier island and spent a year at Long Beach High School, played two years for Boston University — where he racked up eight goals and 43 assists in 75 games — before he was selected 14th overall by the Bruins in last year’s NHL Entry Draft. He won a bronze medal in 2016, and a gold earlier this year at the Under-20 World Junior Championships before receiving his biggest shot yet.

The injury-laden Bruins called him up for the team’s six-game playoff stint in April, and in Game 1 against the Ottawa Senators, McAvoy logged the secondmost time on the ice behind Zdeno Chara. He recorded his first point in game 3, finishing the series with three assists, and the former Terriers defenseman entered his first professional offseason eyeing an “unbelievable rookie year,” he told the Herald earlier this year.

With a goal and seven assists in his first 13 games, McAvoy has certainly proven a level of consistency.

“As soon as I got in for camp it was kind of just picking up where we left off,” he said. “All the guys, I kind of have a relationship now with most of them, so it was good to kind of have that foot in the door that the playoffs allowed me to have.”

His parents, who the camera captured hugging each other excitedly after their son’s first NHL goal, as well as some of McAvoy’s friends, have traveled to see him play, he said, which has been refreshing for him as the 2017-18 campaign ramps up. While getting acclimated to the longer season, McAvoy explained, the key is keeping his mind “in the right place” through the challenges of com-

watching him warm up and we’re looking at each other like, ‘Can you believe this is happening? He’s playing at the Garden.’”

The McAvoy family took the Long Island Rail Road to the game from Long Beach, and their train car was filled with “Rangers fans and Charlie fans,” Charlie Sr. added, estimating about 200 people from Long Beach and surrounding areas came to see him play.

“That’s what Long Beach is,” Charlie Sr. said. “They adopted Charlie and everybody’s pulling for him, so the support has just been unreal, and we’re so grateful for it as a family.”

Getting his first NHL action in the playoffs last season, McAvoy said his goal is to make it back to that atmosphere. In terms of what he hopes to achieve personally, he can’t put that into numbers.

“I just want to play consistent hockey,” he said, “and really just establish myself as a reliable defenseman who plays the same everyday, who brings their best every night.”

“You’re getting hit every game, it’s very physical, especially in the defensive position when you’re getting hit [by] some of those bigger guys,” he noted.

“You’ve really just got to make sure that both physically and mentally you’re ready to play every night, because the schedule’s a grind.”

McAvoy, who was raised a Rangers fan, played his first NHL game at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 8, which he called his favorite building growing up.

The Blueshirts prevailed, 4-2, notching their fifth straight win and spoiling the Bruins plan to tally back-to-back wins for the first time of the season, but the night was special for McAvoy and his family.

His father, Charlie Sr., a former Rangers season ticket holder, recalled the times he would take Charlie to games at the Garden, making the contest on Nov. 8 that much more exciting, he said.

“It’s almost hard to describe how amazing it was,” said Charlie Sr., who soaked in the moment with his wife, Jennifer, and his two daughters. “We’re

With an active storm season, the holidays came early for L.B. surfers

BY ANTHONY RIFILATO “This was definitely a September to remember, for sure,” said Long Beach resident and professional surfer TJ Gumiela.

“It’s been hurricane after hurricane, and the waves were really good. Surfers from all over have been coming.”

For about a month, Long Beach surfers had it good — consistent waves, many of them with six- to eight-foot faces, kept rolling in, courtesy of an above average hurricane season beginning with Hurricane Irma and followed by Jose and Maria.

“The best thing about it was that it was consistent — we had waves for like a month straight,” Gumiela said.

Big-wave monsters Pro surfers Will and Cliff Skudin representing Long Beach on world stage

BY ANTHONY RIFILATO As a kid growing up in Long Beach, Cliff Skudin said that surfing wasn’t as popular in town as it is today.

“It’s becoming more mainstream,” said Skudin, 35, who co-owns Skudin Surf with his brother, Will, a professional big-wave surfer. “It used to be, when I was a kid, that if you surfed after school it wasn’t really looked at as a sport — it was looked down upon. Now it’s like, ‘wow, you’re on a surf team.’”

Over the past decade, the Skudins have become known for putting New York surfing on the map, in part through their surf camps for kids and adults, as well as clinics for young surfers, or groms, and local surf teams out of the Hurley Surf Club powered by Skudin Surf, a facility that opened on the boardwalk last year.

“A lot of our surfers are in grade school and middle school,” Skudin said.

“Now, we’re getting recognition through our Skudin performance coaching out of the Hurley Surf Club — these New York groms are competing against kids from Florida and California, and winning.”

Many people say those young surfers are learning from two local legends.

When they’re not home in Long Beach during the summer months, teaching children and adults with special needs to surf through their nonprofit organization Surf for All, or running Skudin Surf, Cliff and Will chase big waves around the

Will, who is sponsored by Hurley, has cemented his status over the past several years as one of the best big-wave surfers in the world, particularly after he became the first surfer from the North East to clinch an official spot on this year’s elite Big Wave World Tour.

“I’m most proud of making the tour,” Will told the Herald earlier this year. “I was an alternate for the last 6 years — I have always been pretty close but this year I finally got the spot.”

The Big Wave World Tour is an annual big-wave surfing tournament run by the World Surf League with waves that are at least 40 feet tall. The 2017-18 tour is scheduled to run four events — the

Puerto Escondido Challenge in Mexico, Pe’ahi “Jaws” Challenge in Hawaii, the Nazaré Challenge in Portugal, and the world-famous Mavericks in northern California.

After more than six years of traveling the globe and catching 60-foot waves — and competing as an alternate — Will was one of eight surfers from around the world who earned a place on the Big Wave tour earlier this year.

“It’s not surprising to me that someone from the East Coast could become successful in big waves,” Gary Linden, founder of the Big Wave World Tour, told Surfer Magazine. “Sometimes there’s more motivation if the waves aren’t in your backyard; it’s incredible how committed Will is.”

Skudin has already competed in two of the events, most recently at Jaws in October. At both events, he didn’t make the semifinals, but he’s hoping to solidify a place in the next two events, if not a win.

“It’s a huge accomplishment to be on the world tour and world stage representing the U.S. — there’s guys from all over the world,” Cliff said of Will. “And he’s representing New York, so he’s very honored.”

Will is currently on a waiting period, which runs through mid-March, for the next contest on the tour.

“I am most stoked for Nazaré, in Portugal,” he said. “It’s one of the places I feel I could do better at.”

Cliff, meanwhile, was an alternate in a past Big Wave World Tour contest and is working his way up professionally. He is currently on a waiting period to compete in two pro-am events that include the Punta Galea Challenge in Spain and the Nelscott Reef Big Wave Classic in Oregon.

“If I do really well, I could earn a spot on the big-wave tour,” Cliff said.

“It all came about in the beginning of the year — they invited me to the events, and I’m very grateful and excited to compete amongst the best up and coming surfers.”

In the meantime, the Skudins are busy helping the community of Rincon, in Puerto Rico, a popular surfing destination that was devastated by Hurricane Maria.

Surf for All launched a Hurricane Maria Relief Fund, and hosted a fundraiser at the Beach House on Oct. 14 that raised more than $20,000 for its relief effort, bringing

2 the group’s total to more than $44,000, which will go directly to a number of relief projects in Rincon. The organization launched a similar relief effort after Hurricane Sandy and is collecting donations at www.surfforall.org.

Skudin Surf operates the Skudin Surf Shack in Rincon, which offers surfing lessons and guided tours. Cliff and Will’s brother, Woody, a retired U.S. Marine Corps lieutenant, is traveling to Rincon this month to help coordinate and assist the relief effort.

“Those of us in Long Beach know first hand how the devastation of a hurricane can impact a community,” Cliff said. “Seeing the amount of love and support coming into the Rincon community has been incredible.”

The barrier island is an appealing location for Hollywood filmmakers

BY ALYSSA SEIDMAN Long Beach is known as the hometown of Hollywood legend Billy Crystal, and for the popular Long Beach International Film Festival, a star-studded event now in its sixth year that includes film screenings and food tastings on the beach.

But the barrier island has also become an appealing location for Hollywood and independent filmmakers alike.

“We have one of the most successful and attractive film incentives in the world, with incredible spots that double for just about any location,” said Ingrid Dodd, a Lido Beach resident and Nassau County’s director of development of motion picture and TV. “We encourage film production in [our county] to maintain the local film industry. The community embraces filming. To see a local location that you know and love on the big screen is fascinating.”

While scenes for classic films such as “The Godfather” and “Goodfellas” were shot at The Catalina Beach Club in Atlantic Beach and the Loop Parkway, a bevy of new movies have recently been filmed in and around town.

“When a film company comes to the area, they’re spending money on local businesses,” said Debra Markowitz, the county’s film commissioner. “If you keep a community film-friendly, there are going to be more people filming here, and they bring a lot of money with them. The industry [also] has high-level, well-paid union jobs, which is great for our economy.”

Here’s a roundup of just some of the movies that were recently shot in town:

“Isn’t It Romantic?”

“Pitch Perfect” stars Rebel Wilson and Adam Devine reunite in this upcoming romantic comedy.

The story follows a woman

who becomes physically stuck in a romantic comedy movie, and has to find her way out of it. The film also stars Hollywood heartthrob Liam Hemsworth.

A scene shot in Long Beach last summer doubled as Perth, Australia, where Wilson’s character grew up. While researching for the movie, directors and producers saw that Perth looked strikingly similar to Long Beach.

The scene was shot on California Street in the West End. Dodd said the location scouts on the production said nearby neighbors were happy and very cooperative. “They loved filming in Long Beach,” she said.

“Dinosaur” This independent dramatic thriller directed by Long Islander Fred Carpenter features rock ’n’ roll icon — and Long Beach resident — Joan Jett, and actors Ed Asner, Robert Clohessy, Chuck Zito, and Vincent Pastore. The movie follows the life of John Halmo (Clohessy), a veteran police officer, who is trying to juggle his turbulent home life, the daily stresses of his job and the apparent inevitable biker war that’s about to engulf his hometown.

While struggling through a particularly tough day, he finds himself on a collision course with Frank LaCarver (Zito), the leader of a violent biker gang obsessed with avenging the murder of his brother. The film shot at various locations in Point Lookout over the summer.

The movie was written and produced by Edward Wahl, a retired Nassau County police officer.

MaryAnn Giannino is the film’s casting director and producer.

According to IMDB, the movie is currently in post-production.

“Summertime” Valley Stream native and actor/director Ed Burns has returned to his Long Island roots for his latest project, “Summertime.”

The coming-of-age story was written and directed

by Burns, and features an ensemble cast, including Rita Volk, the star of MTV’s series “Faking It.” The Catalina Beach Club in Atlantic Beach was featured, and Ted’s Fishing Station in Point Lookout provided a boat-filled backdrop for the indie film.

“The Irishman” Legendary director Martin Scorcese’s upcoming crime drama “The Irishman,” starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel, is currently in production and has been filming on Long Island, among other areas in New York. From New York to California Shine’s annual bike tour adds to the West End’s unique character

BY ANTHONY RIFILATO Shine’s bar will celebrate its 105th anniversary in December, but that’s not the only milestone the former speakeasy hit in 2017.

The bar’s popular New York to California Bike Tour, an event that many say has added to the character of the West End, marked its 20th anniversary in August.

The annual event attracts hundreds of participants, many of them dressed in wacky costumes and riding decorative bikes. Shine’s, at California and West Beech streets, is one of the oldest bars on Long Island. To those unfamiliar with the West End, New York to California might sound like quite a distance, said Megan Casey, the wife of owner Brent Wilson.

“Some people think it’s like a 5K, but nope — they’re only going one block,” she said. “You’re doing a purely ridiculous thing for fun. The whole block gets involved, and neighbors are standing outside and cheering people on.”

The tour starts in the parking lot of Mio Posto, and participants ride up New York Avenue, make a left onto West Park Avenue and down California Street to Shine’s.

“Hundreds and hundreds of bikes are coming around the corner,” Casey said.

“It’s what makes the West End kind of unique — it’s a fun neighborhood event and the energy is amazing.”

Former bartender Roy Doyle, who was known for his pranks — he once held a pool party inside the bar by filling up a kiddie pool — came up with the idea for the tour in 1997.

“It started as a total lark,” Casey said.

“The first one had maybe 12 people.”

After a brief hiatus, the tour was revived in the early 2000s, and has since attracted hundreds of riders of all ages.

Participants wear official Bike Tour T-shirts, or get decked out in costumes ranging from zombies to Mexican wrestlers.

“One guy rode a tricycle,” Casey said. “We had a pregnant woman who wrote over her stomach, ‘eight months sober.’ Two guys came in colonial attire.

People wear the craziest outfits. It’s just so funny.”

cast aside their own concerns about the business’s survival and operated as a full-fledged soup and supply kitchen for those in need. The owners were forced to hold the celebration a year later.

Shine’s will celebrate 105 years in business on Dec. 5 — on the 75th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition.

“We’re going to do a champagne toast, or maybe a Jameson toast,” Megan said. “It’s about Shine’s. We’re going to do a toast to her, to the bar — it’s so much bigger than all of us.
