Letter

A summer of music, food, style and more f you’re a local, you’re probably aware that Long Beach politics have been crazier than usual.

So it was something of a welcome respite to produce another colorful publication highlighting the best of the City by the Sea. With this issue, we wanted to write about the local music scene and some of the artists who have added to the community’s distinct character.

Alexandra Starr, who graces the cover of our eighth issue, has become known as a local talent on the rise and for her performances at the Inn, Cabana, Junction and other well-known spots in town. The singer/songwriter recently released a single, “I See It All,” on iTunes, and she spoke to writer David Weingrad about the filming of her latest music video, new band and burgeoning music career.

Writer Chris Engelhardt, meanwhile, has an exclusive interview with the legendary G. Love, who recently brought his blend of blues, folk and hip-hop to the Inn, where he gave an energetic performance at a sold out show.

We also highlight the Shine A Light Music Series, organized by Martin Brull, of the Tommy Brull Foundation, which has brought high-caliber, acclaimed indie rock and folk acts such as The Felice Brothers, Deer Tick and Titus Andronicus — who is performing in August — to Junction in Long Beach. The show raises money to help those with special needs.

Elsewhere, in our “Women who rule the beach” feature, writers Bridget Downes and Elizabeth Thompson profile empowering women who have had a tremendous, positive impact on the community, including Beth Skudin, a swim coach known as the matriarch of the local surfing community, and Carol O’Neill, president of the Michelle O’Neill Foundation and founder of the Michelle O’Neill Volleyball Tournament, which benefits children with cancer and special needs.

We’ve also highlighted Long Beach’s local food scene, including Blacksmith’s Breads, which opened last year and has become a hot spot in the West End; Blackdoor Burger, a “hidden” late-night burger joint that has locals raving; Baked By The Ocean, a new bakery owned by Catherine Schimenti, a pastry chef who worked at some of the finest restaurants in the country; and other wonderful eateries and businesses.

We launched the magazine after Hurricane Sandy, in part, to show that Long Beach was open for business, and in each issue, our goal has been to highlight all that’s great about the community, whether it’s shopping and dining, surfing and recreation, or the people who give Long Beach its unique character.

The magazine was edited and designed by the Long Beach Herald’s award-winning staff. We strive to keep the publication fun and upbeat. We hope you enjoy it!

Prints from Boardwalk Canvas offer residents ‘a piece of where they call home’

By Alyssa Seidman A new business on the Barrier Island is offering residents premium prints at unbeatable prices. Boardwalk Canvas, which was founded in 2016, began with the impetus to provide the community access to art being created right under their nose.

“I’ve been an ocean lifeguard since 2001, and had friends in the local surf scene, and a big part of that is the photographers,” said Brendan Dempsey, founder and CEO of Boardwalk Canvas. “Being around that community with people who are so artistically-driven, it was always intoxicating to me how much talent was here, but the locals know little about local artists.”

Dempsey, who’s lived in Long Beach since 2008, came up with the idea to connect residents with the area’s finest photographers by selling print canvases of original, inspiring images of the beach, boardwalk, and other landmarks around town.

With a background as a television producer, Dempsey spent the last four years working at Paramount Network, which gave him, what he called, “lens time,” enabling him to become more familiar with the craft. “I spent a lot of time handling cameras, and learned the technical skills behind photography,” he said.

Three years ago, Dempsey began testing his concept with fellow photographer Timothy Andre, a friend from high school.

The two shared an appreciation for photography, especially the kind that captured the scenic beauty of Long Beach. Since then, Dempsey has teamed up with four other partner photographers — Brian Shannon, Jenny Coffey, Neal Campbell and Ron Walker — to bring local art into homes and businesses, even beyond the Barrier Island.

“Part of our ethos is doing all of our business online, which gives us the ability to connect with people wherever they are and deliver photographs to more communities than just Long Beach,” Dempsey said. “We’re able to give people across the south shore access to art and creativity [from] their communities at an affordable price.”

Dempsey said that Boardwalk Canvas accommodates a market that is “largely untapped,” and gives consumers something greater than just a simple showpiece.

“Our customers are able to cover their walls with things that are tied to Long Beach, and with images they have an emotional connection to,” he said. “There’s a feeling and a memory behind it as opposed to buying a print from Home Goods. We’re giving people a piece of where they call home.”

Dempsey recalled a hungry surfer patronizing Dough Hut last year after catching a swell in September. While he waited for his coffee, he observed the Boardwalk Canvas prints that line the walls, taking particular interest in one that featured him riding a wave.

Recognition is key not only for buyers but for Boardwalk Canvas’ featured photographers, as well.

“The idea was for consumers to get great art at a great price from the people who know their town the best,” Dempsey said. “We’re supporting talented photographers, and because the photography community is close-knit it makes it easy to bring these people into the fold and turn a profit for themselves.”

Dempsey said the response from residents has been “overwhelmingly positive.”

“Often an artists work won’t get recognized in a big beach town, so we’re becoming an outlet for that,” he said. “It’s exciting.”

Pride ride Fest teases summer fashion Story and photos by Brian Stieglitz

hether strutting, dancing or back flipping down the runway, models at the second annual Pride on the Beach fashion show sported a line of summer trends that all seemed to boast one central theme: comfort.

Presented by Colette Productions Inc. and the New York Fit Fest, the Pride on the Beach fashion show revealed trending selections from brands such as Trina Turk, 2Xist and Skull and Bones.

Trina Turk specializes in active wear for both women and men, featuring a number of floral patterns and cartoonlike designs. The company recently partnered with Disney and Pixar to produce a line of swimwear with designs inspired by the film “Incredibles 2.”

As men drift away from board shorts and typical below-the-knee trunks, 2Xist boasts a line of swimwear that gives men a more flattering fit. Pieces included kneelength bathing suits and pop art-influenced apparel.

And Skull and Bones prides itself on its vibrant prints and bold designs, with a number of different swimsuits, underwear and jock straps, as well as a selection of designer apparel.

“For me, it’s very rewarding when to see the event come to life and to see everyone have so much fun,” said Colette Lee Morales, who coordinates the show with Ingrid Dodd and Jay Belsky.

All models were volunteers from Long Beach and beyond, including the team at the Chop Shop Hair Salon and Barrier Island Crossfit, as well as dancers from Members of Melange and the Lock Dance Performers.

The show also featured radio host Stevie Price, DJ Ello and musical performances by Buddy Cisimano and Eddie Bennett of the Bookend Baldies and Rosa Laricchiuta, a singer who performs with the rock group Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

In a Coca Cola tank top and sporting a navy blue bandana, Jo Lipuma took his time on the runway to show pride for his mothers.

Reggae rhythms ‘from a pure place of love’ Long Beach mainstay JahStix reflects on his music

By Zach Gottehrer-Cohen JahStix plays weekly shows at two popular Long Beach bars — Beach House and The Cabana — and other venues in the area. The Nigerian-Caribbean reggae artist, who lives in Brooklyn, was raised on a diverse array of musical influences, including Tracy Chapman, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell. On July 1, in between sets at Beach House, JahStix sat down with Long Beach Magazine for a Q&A. Zach: How did you first start playing Long Beach?

JahStix: I used to play in the subway stations, and one of the spots I played was Penn Station. That space near track 16 or 18, I used to play there at least twice a week, and I’d get cards a lot, people telling me to give them a call or whatever. Three weeks later this guy calls me and says, “Hey do you remember me? I have this bar [Beach House] out in Long Beach. You might like it, you know, come give it a try.”

Zach: How would you describe the kind of music you play?

Speaker 1: My thing’s reggae — that’s the base of what I do, but I branch out into the rock, into the blues, into the soul and R&B stuff, into the pop. I created my own thing, my own sound. It’s never the same because it changes all the time and what I do is different because I’m like a one-man band, I’m a loop artist. I’d say, like, it’s kind of Ed Sheeran doing reggae covers, something like that.

Zach: Is that the sound that you’re going for?

JahStix: It’s not that that’s what I’m going for, but if I was going to tell somebody what I do, you know you use names that people are familiar with. [Sheeran’s] huge as a musician, and if you want to explain the art of looping, he’s probably the first one

that people have seen.

Zach: Back in the day, people might see a lone guy up there and say, ‘Oh, this is going to be a small sound.’

JahStix: Yeah exactly, like it’s just one guy just strumming away on his guitar all night. But I’ve really worked on perfecting it to be my thing. The way I loop it, if you’re not looking, you’d think there were four people behind me.

Zach: Every artist has a place within them that they draw on to make their art. What is that place for you?

JahStix: It’s always from an emotional place, always. It’s about projecting urges, they can be good or bad, but they always come from a pure place of love. People usually come to bars because they are trying to get away, take a breath, hang out, or whatever. It’s a kind of therapy, a liquid therapy.

Zach: You’re saying sometimes people come to bars to escape, but you hope they walk away from your show with something more meaningful than just an escape.

JahStix: Yes, exactly. It can be a discovery of music. A very mystical way of reaching people that goes beyond the words you speak and beyond the lyrics. It’s the way the melodies come together. It’s like there’s a lock and if you have the right key, you can open up a door to another dimension.

That’s what the music is for me. You constantly are trying to open up more doors on this plane of positive energy connecting people together.

The local music scene Every year, the library and other venues around the city host a variety of music festivals that highlight local talent and entertainment. Between the Cabaret Festival and the summer concert series, there’s never a dull moment.

Barrier Beach Blues Festival The 10th annual Barrier Beach Blues and Arts Festival was held June 28 to 30 at the Long Beach Public Library, located at 111 W. Park Ave., and other venues in the city. The festival featured an eclectic mix of Classic Blues, Americana and Roots music. Folk 2 Funk ROOTS Program and Food Drive The eighth annual Folk 2 Funk ROOTS Program and Food Drive was hosted by the Long Beach Public Library the weekends of March 17 and 24. The festival featured various folk artists, including Bethany Yarrow, the daughter of folk legend Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul & Mary, cellist Rufus Cappadocia and dancer Belinda Becker.

Cabaret Festival The Long Beach Public Library and AIP presented the 11th annual Cabaret Festival from May 17 to 19 at the library, featuring the Great American Songbook and the

cabaret genre. It featured various artists, including Colleen McHugh, who sang Cole Porter’s “French Connections.”

Summer concert series The City of Long Beach Concert Series kicked off July 5 and will run through August 30. Shine A Light Music Series making a difference

Top indie and folk rockers perform in L.B. to support those with special needs

By Chris Engelhardt “It’s been the most special thing I’ve

done in my life,” said Martin Brull, cofounder of the Tommy Brull Foundation, a Rockville Centre-based nonprofit which raises funds to help children and adults with physical, mental and emotional disabilities on Long Island. “It’s a way to give back to the community, and to make a difference.”

Since 2011, the foundation has held a series of highly attended benefit concerts organized by Brull called Shine A Light, which have raised funds for various organizations and families across Long Island.

Brull co-founded the foundation in 2008 in memory of his brother, Tommy, who died in an accident in 1999. Both were counselors at Camp Anchor in Lido Beach. Shine A Light, he said, was inspired by his late brother. The two would attend music events together, and he wanted to put together shows that his brother would have enjoyed.

The foundation has not only made a difference in the lives of those with special

needs, but has also honored Tommy’s memory by attracting an impressive array of musical talent — along with ample crowds — to various locations on Long Island, with Long Beach as the latest destination.

as The War on Drugs, whose 2017 album “A Deeper Understanding” won a Grammy award for Best Rock Album. The series came to Long Beach with The Felice Brothers headlining at Junction last December, and Deer Tick performing a sold out show at the venue in June.

“I’m an avid music lover — I seek out acts I’m interested in, bands my brother would have liked,” said Brull, who explained that his process of booking top acts has involved a lot of trial and error. “The bands that have signed on have really enjoyed the whole vibe, and supporting our cause.”

Brull noted that every show has been special, not only because they support the foundation’s mission, but honor his brother’s memory.

“Having artists come out, and dedicate a song to him is special,” he said. “This helps you heal, and has helped friends and family. It’s nice to see my brother’s memory still alive.”

has also allowed him the opportunity to meet new people and form exciting relationships, including a new partnership with Junction, at 20 W. Park Ave. Though Long Beach is a new location for the popular music series, he said, the energy and passion for music among fans has been palpable.

John Hamlet, acting manager at Junction, described partnering with the foundation as an honor, noting that the music venue is becoming a popular destination for top musical performances. The New Orleans-themed venue, which features acoustic and jazz music, dueling piano performances and a large stage, has drawn strong crowds, he said.

“It’s been amazing to support such a good cause,” Hamlet said.“Marty is great.

The foundation runs a great show, and everyone always has a great time. We’ve been pushing live music, and the community has always been invested in the music scene here.”

In addition to Shine A Light, the Tommy Brull Foundation has raised more than $500,000 for various charitable organizations, including Camp Anchor. Brull noted another point of pride with the foundation — specifically, its recent efforts in starting a six-week surf camp within Anchor. In conjunction with the Long Beach-based nonprofit Surf for All, the foundation has taught hundreds of kids with special needs to ride waves.

“I have strong ties to the Long Beach community, I’ve surfed there my whole life,”

3 he said.“We wanted to start a surf camp, and we wanted to have kids with special needs experience surfing and build their confidence. It was a dream, and it came true.”

Overall, Brull said, he’s proud of the foundation’s accomplishments, and noted that the reception of the Shine A Light series has been overwhelming positive. Fans have been so impressed with the musical acts that the foundation has secured, he said, and he’s even noticed an expanding fan base for shows, with music lovers traveling in from around and outside the country, including Europe and South America. As

long as fans are flocking to attend, he said, the music series will continue on.

The next Shine A Light series event will take place on Aug. 3 at Junction, featuring headliner Titus Andronicus — a punk/indie band from New Jersey that has performed live on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” and “Last Call with Carson Daly” — with special guest Acid Dad. “This is about bringing music to Long Island,” he said.“We’ve created a community at shows. People can feel what we’re there to do. They feel the home grown vibe we have.”

Long Beach’s Alexandra Starr ‘Sees It All’ Musician’s video for recent single racks up over 100,000 views

By David Weingrad Alexandra Starr never intended to write a self-love anthem.

But when inspiration struck one day last year in the bedroom of her SoHo apartment, the words simply poured out of her. Sitting at her computer, Starr recalled mixing various sound and instrumentals until she found a rhythm she liked.

Freestyling came next, and the positivity flowed.

“I wasn’t thinking that I’m going to make this one about self-love,” Starr said.

“Or I’m going to make this song about confidence. It kind of fell out of my mouth.”

But when Starr talks about her musical journey, which began as a young girl in Long Beach playing the guitar and writing songs, the 22-year-old Long Beach High School graduate exudes a sense of confidence and joy. Singing and performing, she said, comes natural to her. And having the opportunity to perform regularly at local venues, surrounded by people who have followed her career since its beginning, makes it even more special.

The Inn and The Cabana rank among her favorite local spots to perform, as well as Buoy Bar in Point Lookout.

“I love playing for the locals,” said Starr, who has since moved back to Long Beach. “I invite everyone I know and it kind of turns into a little party. I love being personal with my audience. I like knowing them.”

More recently, Starr’s audience has expanded well beyond Long Beach, beginning with her burst of inspiration last year. After freestyling in a voice memo on her phone, she recorded the lyrics and sent it to a friend who helped her mix it with the instrumentals. Within five hours, “I See It All,” an up-tempo, dance pop ballad, was complete. The single was released on iTunes last August.

But more than any other project she’s worked on, this one was personal to Starr, and there was more work to be done.

“I wrote it to send a message to peo-

2 ple who are maybe going through something that I went through not too long ago,” she said. “Everyone struggles with self-esteem or confidence at one point or another. I grew up getting bullied a lot.

That definitely altered how I saw myself, and how I felt about my talents and what I can achieve as a person.

“It’s not often people look in the mirror and are like ‘Wow, I’m awesome. I did a really good job,’” she added. “People kind of feel ashamed to do that. I wanted this anthem to be like a song that’s like, ‘Hey its hard, it’s really hard, but you’ve got it, and look how far you’ve come, and you’re awesome and you’re beautiful and you’re strong.”

She soon reached out to a videographer on Instagram. Following a meeting, they agreed to shoot a music video two days later. And that’s how Starr, on a frosty weekend late last year, could be seen dancing around various parts of Brooklyn filming her breakthrough solo music video.

In the two-minute, 48-second video, now viewable on Starr’s YouTube channel, a smile rarely leaves Starr’s face as she dances in Prospect Park; in athletic fields; beside the Williamsburg Bridge; and, at one point — atop a basketball hoop.

Just over a half a year after the video was published, it has accumulated more than 100,000 views.

Following the video’s success, Starr hinted that exciting things are coming down the pipeline. She told Long Beach Magazine that she’s planning an exciting set of shows outside of Long Beach with her new group, Torrence, a band whose sound she said is in the same mold as Starr’s favorite band: Paramore.

But whether she’s performing locally or on the road, she said she’ll always be that same girl who began her musical career performing for modest sized crowds around Long Beach.

“I’m just trying to get more experience and have fun along the way and discover more about myself,” she said.

“I’m just a chick who’s trying to be super honest in my music and help everyone have a good time. I want to make people feel things. Every show I give 100 percent and I hope people feel that.”

A Q & A reveals the rocker’s passion fo

By Chris Engelhardt Despite a long, somewhat arduous travel day to his next gig in Long Beach at the Inn on June 30, musician G. Love, the frontman of G. Love & Special Sauce, is in remarkably good spirits.

Only minutes into the conversation, his energy is palpable, and his eagerness to talk life and music gripping, not to mention his love of the local community (he also surfs when in town). G. Love, whose real name is Garrett Dutton, is known for his energetic live shows and devoted fan base.

He has released more than a dozen studio albums since 1994 as a solo artist and with Special Sauce, including 2015’s “Love Saves the Day.” On his 1999 album “Philadelphonic,” G. Love featured a then unknown Jack Johnson and played an early version of Johnson’s “Rodeo Clowns.”

Long Beach Magazine spoke with the Philadelphia-based singer and guitarist about his recent performance in Long Beach, celebrating the band’s 25th anniversary tour, his special blend of blues, folk and hip-hop and his connection with the fans.

You recently played your fifth annual summer show at the Inn on Long Beach. The venue has really transformed into a prolific live music venue showcasing local, regional and national talent. What brings you back each time?

It’s been a great relationship with the Inn. It’s always a fun crowd, with amazing energy. Long Beach is a fun, vibrant beach town with a great surf community. It’s a party town, too. There’s a lot of love. I’ve been surfing in Long Beach for years. It’s also great to see that Long Beach has rebuilt after Hurricane Sandy, and the

ion for music and Long Beach community has really come together.

You’re celebrating your 25th anniversary tour, which includes solo and full band performances around the world. What makes this tour special?

It’s been a tremendous amount of dedication by the band and the crew. We’ve dedicated so much of our life to getting this music out to the world on stage every night. I’m proud of it, humbled by it. I love to be on stage. Writing new tunes, making new records that matter. To live this life, this tour, it’s been amazing. I feel like I’m just getting started.

What’s in your tour survival kit?

Just a guitar and a harmonica (laughs). For me, it’s more about keeping your physical and mental health. I exercise every day, go surfing.

There are things I do before the

show. I take a nap, so I’m fresh. I meditate. Some vocal lessons, a cocktail, and then I go rock out.

It’s game time.

How did your “trashcan blues” sound — a blend of blues, folk and hip-hop — come to be?

I started with folk and acoustic rock — Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Peter, Paul and Mary, The Birds — and then I found the blues and John Hammond. I knew that was the type of music I wanted to play, but in my own way. The blues, but talking about stuff I knew from Philly — basketball, graffiti, all that. We’ve always tried to be raw, organic and off the cuff.

You’ve been in the music biz for more than 20 years — do you just smile, having gone I often have to kick myself — to celebrate 25 years together as a band has been an accom-

plishment. Time goes fast. It’s a testament to the fans — we couldn’t do it without them. The love I’ve received from all the people that our music has touched, it’s a special relationship. There’s a connection made every night. It’s a big musical family to me.

Touring aside, anything brewing in the studio?

We’re cooking up something real tasty for the next G. Love record. It will probably be out this next spring.

What’s next for you and the band?

My goal for my next record is to win a blues Grammy. We have a very unique take on the blues — we believe in it, a lot of people do. Otherwise? To continue to write and create new music that makes you feel good and expresses real emotion. That’s something I know I’ll always do. I’ll never take it for granted.

‘Authentic’ pizza — right on the beach

Neapolitan Express serving organic, eco-friendly pies in L.B.

By Anthony Rifilato Tom Turner was busy on a sweltering day in June serving customers personal 10-inch pizza pies at the newest addition to Long Beach’s Shoregasboard this summer, Neapolitan Express.

“We use the highest quality ingredients,” said Turner, 25, an East Rockaway native, as people crowded the food truck court on Riverside Boulevard. “We’re the first company to produce authentic, Neapolitan pizza in an environmentally sustainable way off a mobile vending unit.

There are zero emissions from the trucks — it’s the equivalent of taking about 200 vehicles off the road. Which is why we’re perfect for the beach.”

Neapolitan Express rolled into the Shoregasboard just before the Memorial Day weekend, a mobile food truck that is environmentally friendly, fully-powered by compressed natural gas and renewable energy sources. The New York City-based company also uses all natural ingredients that are 100 percent organic and non-GMO. Even the pizza boxes are 100 percent recyclable and compostable, Turner said.

The company was launched in 2012 as the world’s first eco-

2 friendly food truck, and now includes a fleet of 30 trucks and several brick and mortar locations in New York City. Investors included T. Boone Pickens’ company, Clean Energy Fuels, and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, according to the company’s website. It’s also the official pizza of the U.S. Open.

Business partners Tim Petrone and Marc Derkatch, both of Rockville Centre, decided to launch the first franchise on Long Island this year, beginning with two trucks, including the first in Long Beach, which has been serving more than 200 personal pies on busy Saturdays, Turner said.

“We’ve been thinking about

coming to Long Island for a long time — there was no pizza on the beach,” said Turner, the director of Long Island operations. “We’re the first franchise outside of the boroughs, and the company had been looking to expand out of Manhattan.

We’re very familiar with Long Beach in general — we’ve been to the Shoregasboard and we knew that if we were going to start anywhere that this was the spot.”

Turner said that the truck can run on natural gas or electricity, heating the oven to 900 degrees and firing a pizza in just 90 seconds, using high-quality ingredients such as San Marzano tomatoes and double zero Caputo flour, the “Ferrari” of pizza

flours. Customers can choose from a standard Margherita pie with fresh tomatoes and mozzarella to more creative items, such as the “Tartufo,” made with bufala mozzarella, organic cremini mushrooms and white truffle oil.

According to Turner, the average New York City slice includes between 700 to 800 calories, whereas a Neapolitan Express Margherita pie includes up to 500 calories.

“We make everything fresh,” said Turner, adding that most pizza trucks tend to reheat slices that have already been prepared. “The response has been unbelievable — we’re something new to the area, people haven’t seen anything like this. They’ve seen pizza, but they haven’t seen personal pizza made fresh. We believe greatly in our quality.”

The Inn, a Long Beach icon West End staple known for its food and top live bands

“You never know who is going to be hanging out next to you at the bar at the Inn,” said Kristy Chabus, head bartender and assistant manager of the Inn. The popular West End bar, restaurant and music venue, at 943 W. Beech St., has become known in recent years for its live music acts — and good food.

The Inn, which boasts a unique two-level, stone structure on the corner of Tennessee Avenue, has a rich history and was once an Army barrack during World War II, said co-owner Pete Jacoutot.

According to Jacoutot, one famous soldier who stayed at the barracks was Irving Berlin, the composer of “White Christmas,” “Happy Holiday” and “Anything You Can Do.” In 1950, Jacoutot said, the Inn was converted into a rooming house with a piano bar downstairs. Since then, it has been

2 serving food and providing live music to its guests.

The Inn today In 2001, Jacoutot, along with his business partners PJ Kavanagh and Eamon Donohoe, bought the business and made significant renovations.

They kicked off a grand reopening in 2002 with a concert by the rock band Black 47, which Jacoutot described as the start of a rich line-up of live music

acts to come, such as G. Love, the Philadelphia-based singer and guitarist who plays a blend of blues, folk and hip-hop tunes, and Long Island’s own Taking Back Sunday.

“Artists love the cool vibe of the multi-level layout,” Jacoutot said.

Jacoutot stressed the importance of Long Beach’s unique location and close proximity to New York City as a major draw for artists.

“A beach town is special to everybody,” he said. “Long Beach is a laid back community that allows artists to enjoy the beach in between their soundcheck and their performance — an opportunity that cannot be found just anywhere.”

G. Love recently played a soldout show on June 30, his fifth annual summer show at the Inn, part of his 25th anniversary tour, which includes performances all across the country.

Jacoutot explained that last year, the alternative rock band Taking Back Sunday gave a surprise performance at the Inn ahead of an international tour.

According Jacoutot, the band’s drummer, Mark O’Connell, a Long Beach resident, said that he had always thought it would be cool to ride his bike from his home to do a show at the Inn. The concert, which was geared toward locals, sold out in an hour, Jacoutot said.

has also hosted a number of celebrities such as Yoenis Cespedes of the New York Mets, Jarvis Landry of the Cleveland Browns, and pro-surfer Kelly Slater.

“We’ve had celebrities come in with their girlfriends or wives and they just blend in with the crowd,” said Chabus.“Everybody is very respectful … the nice thing about our staff and our customers is that we are a laidback community.”

More than just bar food The Inn’s menu offers more than just traditional bar food.

Head waitress Bridgette Gillespie said popular menu items include crunchy tuna rolls, avocado cilantro salad, chicken parmigiana and the Inn’s famous wings.

“We are known to have the best wings in town,” said Gillespie.

Nelson Hernandez, the Inn’s executive chef, created a dynamic menu, said Jacoutot, and he’s famous for his Taco Tuesdays, which he began years ago at Baja, a former Long Beach restaurant that has since closed.

The Inn also offers a myriad of specials including its Wednesday “two for one” build your own burger special with a $5 craft beer.

“I think we have a choice of probably over 25 different beers whether on draft, bottle or can, so you could actually come in and have a different burger,

different beer for the rest of the year,” said restaurant manager Anthony Grassi.

Giving back to the community The Inn also hosts numerous benefit events and fundraisers for all different causes in the community.

The Inn’s most recent event was a fundraiser for the Long Beach Waterfront Warriors, an organization dedicated to honoring and aiding injured veterans. As with all charity events, the staff donated their time to help the organization, Jacoutot said.

“We take pride in hosting fundraisers,” said Jacoutot.

Many of the Inn’s employees are locals whose families have worked at the restaurant and bar for generations, he added.

“The main reason the Inn is so successful is the strength of the staff here,” said Jacoutot.“Nearly everyone on my staff either walks or bikes to work.”

ong Beach’s dining scene is always evolving. Restaurateurs in the City by the Sea — and their counterparts nearby — are always refining their cuisine, eager to entice their clientele with exciting food — accompanied by great wines, creative cocktails and craft beer pairings.

There’s much to tempt even the fussiest palate here. Here’s a sampling of where to go.

Grotta di Fuoco With their four-year anniversary coming in August, Grotta di Fuoco has become a mainstay in Long Beach’s West End. Chefowner Andrew Allotti, inspired by restaurant’s wood burning oven (which survived Superstorm Sandy), has created a tantalizing menu that is far from the standard Italian fare.

“We focus on the detail of every ingredient, he says.“All our pastas are made inhouse as are all desserts.”

“We’ve stepped away from the idea of everything parmesan,” he says about his menu.“We offer an alternative approach. We really are pretty adventurous here.”

That means you’ll find bone marrow with a flame-roasted beef bone, gremolata and toast; wood fired octopus with pistachio pesto and cranberry stuffed veal meatballs.

His pasta creations include a braised rabbit ragu with lemon pepper cavatelli, and a ricotta gnocchi with broccoli-rabe pesto, ground sausage, frico (cheese wafer) and almond dust.

That standout oven turns out creative wood-fired pizzas, including Allotti’s signature Colazione Pizza (breakfast pizza) featuring sausage, mozzarella, fontina and runny eggs. Entrees include a whole roasted orata (sea bream) with mint, lemon, cipollini onion, and potato; brick pressed chicken on the bone and seared sea scallops with corn, pancetta, brussels sprouts and squid ink vinaigrette.

Syrtaki Greek Restaurant Formerly the Long Beach Diner, Syrtaki Greek Restaurant is the newest creation of owner, Theodore Agelis, who is originally from Greece. Since numerous diners grace the area, including one right across the

street, he decided to transform his West Park Avenue eatery into what Long Beach really needs — a Greekt restaurant.

Authentic Greek cuisine is what makes Syrtaki stand out. The food is prepared exactly as it is in Greece, right down to homegrown ingredients.

The space now boasts a Greek theme.

Booths remain. Walls are covered with black and white photographs of Greek fame — celebrities such as Telly Savalas, renowned movies, scenes of Greece. The menu is perfect for the adventurous eater or those curious about culinary authenticity, yet it also caters to those partial to known items like moussaka, spinach pies, gyros and souvlaki.

The varied menu includes an appetizer of Greek dips, the Greek Trilogy, in which diners can choose three out of the six on the menu. These include Taramosalata (made with fish roe), hummus and eggplant dips, served with pita points. Other popular items include Keftedakia Politika, meatballs in a red sauce with basil and Ouzo liquor; Bekri Meze, tender pork sautéed with red sauce, white wine, peppers and Kefalotiri cheese, served in a soup crock; Kefalotiri Saganaki, a triangle of crisp yet oozing fried cheese; Ntakos Santorinis , a round barley bread bowl crowned with chopped tomatoes, feta and capers, drizzled with oregano olive oil; Bakaliaro Skorvalia, fried cod fish with whipped roasted garlic (which looks like mashed potatoes) and a side of Horta, dandelions with olive oil (similar to escarole).

Desserts include Loukomades, Greek style donuts, served warm and crisp with honey and cinnamon, along with the requisite diner classics — ice cream, milkshakes and egg creams.

Minnesota’s Family is now the focus at Minnesota’s, a West Beech Street establishment that has called Long Beach home since 1994. The restaurant earlier this year underwent an extensive two-month renovation and ditched its “nightclub” vibe to give it a “brand-new image and create a real local restaurant,” new owner Vincent Funaro said. Funaro partnered with an experienced restaurateur with over 15 years in the business, who has successfully opened 10 local pubs and restaurants.

“My partners and I tried to create a local Long Beach restaurant with a family-friendly environment,” he says. “We all have young children (and some on the way), so we know how important family is.”

Indoors, the eatery is decorated with nautical items such as a swordfish, surfboards and a board that shows the day’s surf conditions. Large barynyard doors separate a smaller dining space from a larger one, the latter used for parties. There is also space outside for children to run around or play cornhole, a bean bag tossing game.

Funaro and his partners bought Minnesota’s in February and opened the space on May 5. The décor and ownership isn’t the only thing that’s changed, as the part-time Long Beach resident has also brought on a completely new staff.

The menu, too, has also received a major facelift.

“We have a little bit of everything now,” Funaro says. “Just about any seafood dish you can imagine, we put lobster in just about everything.”

On the appetizer menu you’ll find Chef’s Lobster Fries, a serving of fried potatoes with cheese and chunks of Maine lobster.

You can also order a bucket of steamed mussels or clams, baked clams, mini crab cakes, chicken wings and more.

Other seafood options include macaroni and cheese with chunks of lobster, a pan-

seared king salmon, lobster roll, white clam linguini, a crab cake sandwich and more. If you’re in the mood to share, consider the Pacifico Splat Bucket, which contains half a Maine lobster, shrimp, scallops, crabmeat, mussels and clams.

Looking for some non-aquatic food options? Furnaro recommends the chicken parmesan or the Cantina Burger (topped with avocado, pico de gallo, jalapenos and cheese). And if you’re in the mood for surf and turf, steak and scampi (a hangar steak served alongside Skull Island prawns) or the burger topped with lobster and cheese sauce are sure to satisfy.

Minnesota’s has plenty of cocktails to choose from — the Long Beach Iced Tea takes the place of the classic Long Island Iced Tea — beers, wines and other beverages.

Parking is available on-site and in the lot across the street.

Das Biergarten It’s all about Gemutlichkeit — hospitality — at Andrew Hetzler’s restaurant and beer garden in Atlantic Beach. The action-packed scene seems like an homage to a Munich biergarten. In fact, that pretty much sums up Das Biergarten, according to Hetzler. “It’s a little piece of Munich in Long Beach,” he says.

Hetzler, who grew up in Atlantic Beach, stepped away from his legal career to bring the community a taste of his family’s heritage at Das Biergarten. He culled from the legacy of his family’s authentic German delicatessen in Marine Park, Brooklyn to create his popular restaurant, which celebrates its fourth anniversary in September.

Das Biergarten had its roots in the popup Oktoberfest events that Hetzler started doing in Long Beach 12 years ago. The enthusiastic response to those events encouraged Hetzler to enter into the business full time and he hasn’t looked back since.

“I took on a shell of a building and completely redid everything. We’ve created

a relaxed warm atmosphere that is very welcoming. We’re the only indoor Bavarian beer garden in New York.”

At the center of it all is Hetzler. “As the owner-innkeeper, I’m always here and always working. I’m very hands on,” he says.

Authentic German comfort food — inspired by his family’s recipes — is the focus of Hetzler’s menu. He describes it as “German cuisine’s greatest hits combined with American dishes featuring German nuances.”

“I was fortunate enough to meet and befriend a local young German-American, Ryan Lattmann, who is the most talented chefs I’ve ever worked alongside,” he says. “Together with the rest of the kitchen staff, who have been with me since the start, we’ve teamed up to create an outstanding menu.”

The extensive menu features traditional dishes like Sauerbraten (yes it’s as good as your German grandmother’s version) Schweinshaxe (a roasted pork shank with crispy skin and tender meat that falls off the bone) as well as their famous Jägerschnitzel. The bacon mushroom Jäger sauce is so delectable that it has been incorporated into several other dishes including the Jäger burger, potato skins and even a flatbread pizza.

It all starts however, with their giant Oktoberfest Pretzel. Specially baked and flown in from Germany, paired with the chef’s homemade mustard and biercheese sauce, it is the best you’ll have this side of the Atlantic, according to Hetzler. From tasty appetizers to authentic “haus-made” desserts, Hetzler jokes that “for being a German restaurant, people even say that our wings, burgers, and seasonal lobster rolls are the best in town!” Das Biergarten also offers a brunch menu on weekends including their scrumptious maple bacon, egg, cheese and potato pancake on a pretzel bun.

This is all paired, of course, with the substantial beer/cocktail menu that features 13 fresh draught German beers and even a few local brews like Fire Island and Long Beach Brewing Company.

Entertainment is featured on weekends several times a month. And you may even catch Hetzler himself playing and singing a few tunes with the band. He also warmly accommodates all sorts of parties — including communions, bridal and baby showers, engagement parties, holiday, business gatherings, even kids parties.

The action is non-stop here. There’s no such thing as a lull at Das Biergarten. Once the summer season ends it’s time for Oktoberfest and then hockey season. “We’re ‘Long Beach’s Home for the New York Rangers’,” Hetzler adds, noting that the #MSBiergarten is the next best place to catch a game.

When looking over the extensively decorated ceiling and bar draped in Bavarian blue and white, you’ll see a sign that definitely sums of the spirit of the place, “Welcome to Das Biergarten, where every day is Oktoberfest!”

Going beyond its weekday deals, The Cabana’s standard menu is packed with a variety of creative and delicious entrees to tempt diner’s palates. Choose from seafood, fish and chicken entrees, along with wraps, sandwiches, and burgers. Popular entrees include the famous nine-spice steak taco with its signature scallion sauce or the fajitas, which sizzle with flavor and freshness.

Regardless of what menu item one

chooses, memories are guaranteed to be made while enjoying the refreshing drinks — especially the world-famous frozen margaritas — and entertaining local musicians.

Chefs 724 Chef’s 724, located on Austin Boulevard in Island Park, has taken the south shore by storm. The spot, the former La Rioja space, has generated plenty of buzz among foodies and locals who enjoy the carefully crafted cuisine and relaxed vibe.

Chef-owner David Farahat brings his vast experience in the industry to the operations of his restaurant, which opened in 2017. A graduate of Culinary Institute of America, Farahat has worked in New York City restaurants and also runs a busy catering business with his brother.

“I had no intention of opening a restaurant,” he says, about the evolution of his career. “I started out with this space [which he completely gutted and redesigned] to use for private parties, but I ended up building a restaurant. I built it the way I knew it should be built, with a warm homey feel.”

The interior décor reflects Farahat’s intent to create a restaurant that’s family oriented. “I created a menu that’s family friendly and super casual and cost effective.

It’s the type of place where a husband and wife can have a great dinner, and the kids can too. It’s the kind of place where people can come in shorts and t-shirts or come more dressed up.”

There’s something for everyone on the menu, which Farahat describes as a “mix of American, Italian, Mediterranean and French.“ Popular menu items include a seafood pasta, a Miso Yaki glazed salmon and braised short ribs, which also make an appearance in a short rib pasta. Baby back ribs, a summer special, are already a customer favorite. Diners can also choose from burgers, pizzas, wings, a variety of appetizers, and salads, in addition to the extensive entrée options, along with appealing desserts.

“It all depends on what you want,” Farahat says. He is always on hand to ensure that his restaurant delivers a top-notch experience to his customers. “We are always here,” he says. “People love that.”

To borrow a phrase from a popular TV show, according to Farahat, “we’re the type of place where everyone knows your name.”

Pancho’s Cantina The southwest has a foothold on Long Beach Road in Island Park. Pancho’s “burst” onto the local dining scene nearly 40 years ago when brothers Stephen and Gary Steiner returned from Colorado to open their counter service, paper plate “taco joint” in Cedarhurst.

Top pastry chef sets up shop in Long Beach

Catherine Schimenti was busy sweeping floors on a sweltering Friday in late June, putting the finishing touches on a renovated space ahead of the grand opening of her new business, Baked By The Ocean, a trendy, SoHo-style bakery on the corner of Virginia Avenue in the West End. “It’s the calm before the storm right now,” she said as she greeted a reporter.

Wearing red-frame glasses, dark blue jeans ripped at the knees and a gray tank top, she stood in front of a large, colorful mural featuring a mermaid created by local graffiti artist Mike Ceeza. A disco ball sat on the counter top, to be hung from an exposed, refurbished wood ceiling in a 100-year-old space that had previously been home to F.M. O’Rourke Hardware since 1917.

The 1,000 square-foot bakery, located at 919 W. Beech St., opened in July and serves everything from traditional pastries and desserts to homemade chocolates and softserve ice cream.

Opening new establishments is nothing new to the 38-year-old Schimenti who, as a pastry chef, worked in some of the finest restaurants in the country, including New York City’s renowned Per Se — Chef Thomas Keller’s New American establishment that cur-

rently holds three Michelin stars — and Danny Meyer’s Gramercy Tavern, to name a few.

“I’ve worked a long time for this,” said Schimenti, a Lynbrook native who recently moved to Long Beach. “It was always a dream of mine to open my own place. I always knew I would have my own pastry shop.”

The bakery features freshly baked items, including cupcakes, specialty cakes and an array of different cookies — including black and whites, rainbow and even one in the shape of the late hip-hop icon Biggie Smalls — as well as tarts, muffins and macaroons.

Baked By The Ocean also offers coffee supplied by Long Beach’s own Gentle Brew Coffee Roasters and fresh lemonade, as well as caramels, s’mores and candies. Schimenti also makes her own chocolates and bonbons on premises.

“I got a chocolate machine from France,” she said. “It tempers my chocolate in eight minutes, so I can literally put it in and it will be like a Willy Wonka fountain and I can do whatever I want.”

There’s also a “frosé” machine that makes frozen slushy drinks with a delicate pink rosé wine.

With Baked By The Ocean, Schimenti brings her extensive experience working at

some of the best restaurants to Long Beach.

“Obviously, my clientele is children and their parents, for the most part,” she said. “I’m excited to be able to make my own interpretation of things and also have fun with it and not be in such a stiff environment.”

Working with the best The youngest of five children, Schimenti grew up in a big, tight-knit Italian family. In high school, she worked at The Porthole in East Rockaway, Lynbrook Bagels and Gino’s in Rockville Centre.

After graduation, she attended Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I., where she began her culinary training and eventually majored in pastry arts.

“My mom is like the Italian Martha Stewart — she would literally have a cake for us everyday when we came home,” she said.

“Twenty-two years ago, it wasn’t like people wanted to be a chef at 14 like they do now.

But my parents were extremely supportive of it. I always helped them cook for my brothers and sisters and family events. Food is always the first thing we’re thinking about.”

“It was an awesome experience,” she said. “For me to be in the city was amazing. I just knew it was where I wanted to be and where I wanted my career to take me after I was done in Rhode Island.”

She moved on to a full-time position at Gramercy Tavern, the classic American restaurant with nine James Beard Awards, where she worked for more than three years.

“The chef I was working for, Claudia Fleming, was the best pastry chef in the country at the time,” she said. “I learned so much.”

In 2004, Schimenti was part of a team that helped open Per Se. “Everything was the best of the best,” she said. “The way we did things and how we were taught to care for certain products. It was a really well-rounded pastry program. We did all the sorbets and ice cream, freshly spun every day. We had a chocolate program with 30 different chocolates.”

At 26, Schimenti helped celebrity chef Tom Colicchio open Craft Steak in New York City, her first job as executive pastry chef.

But before she landed the position, she had to present a tasting menu to Colicchio and others, an experience that was like being on “Top Chef,” she said.

“I made like six different plated desserts for Tom and the chef to taste,” she said. “My career was on the line. I actually got the job on my 26th birthday.”

She moved on to Colicchio’s Craft in Los Angeles, where she regularly worked 18-hour days.

She moved to San Francisco to become executive pastry chef at the four-star Michael Mina, and later Bourbon Steak, both run by star chef Mina.

“Besides Gramercy [Tavern], every restaurant I worked at, I was part of the opening team,” she said. “I think it kind of primed me for this a little bit.”

Coming home Schimenti had considered opening her own bakery in San Francisco, but after coming home to Long Island for a friend’s wedding, she decided to move back to New York after a decade living on the West Coast.

“It was great to be with my

family because I was in California for so long,” she said.

She began looking for real estate in the city while working as a consultant for Gelso & Grand in Little Italy. About a year ago, she came across the vacant O’Rourke space while out for dinner. She was also aware of Long Beach’s burgeoning food scene, having dined at eateries such as Lost & Found, chef Alexis Trolf’s acclaimed West End restaurant known for its creative new American cuisine.

“I spent a lot of time in Long Beach and I loved it,” she said, adding that she had looked at several locations in town. “I was so fed up with looking for real estate in the city. My friends from high school all live here and my sister’s family lives here.

I knew that this was the right decision for me.”

She signed the lease in February and started renovations in April. The bakery seats 12 and boasts modern touches such as shiny white tables and counter seating along large windows, wood shelves atop exposed white brick, and a display case with pink and white wood panels designed by Joseph Gallinaro. There’s also outdoor seating and a “selfie wall” for customers in the bathroom.

“I always knew I wanted a

2 bakery that would play oldschool hip-hop, with a neon sign and graffiti in it,” she said.

“I’ve always been into fashion and music. Doesn’t every bakery have a disco ball and play Biggie Smalls?”

Residents said that the establishment adds to the character of the West End. “Our ability to maintain mom

and pop shops is what makes us proud to live here,” said Lauren Horak, owner of Beauty Bar 1947 in Long Beach. “Catherine is just as sweet as her delicious baked goods. Even before her opening, she was helping our community and donating her time and products.”

to serve weekend brunch and mimosas, as well as daily items such as quinoa bowls, salads, bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches and other fare, including gluten free options. She also plans to open a take-out window in the evenings during the summer months.

“I enjoy cooking for people, listening to good music and making people laugh,” she said. “Everyone has been really supportive of me coming here.

I think everything is kind of special.”

A ‘secret’ door in the West End

Blackdoor Burger is a hidden late-night gem for foodies

“When the red light’s on, the grill is on,” said Frank Monteforte, co-owner of Blackdoor Burger, a speakeasy-type joint that opened in the West End in June that serves only burgers and fries to a late-night crowd.

The eatery is deliberately hard to find; there is no sign on the door, and customers are served through a 12-inch-by-12-inch window — or “viewing cage,” as Monteforte calls is — custom-built in a large, black iron door behind Long Beach Sandwich Company, at 801 W. Beech St., which Monteforte co-owns with his older brother, Dan, and father, Frank Sr. Blackdoor Burger is on New York Avenue, across the street from Mio Posto, and is open Thursday through Saturday, from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Monteforte, 28, opened the takeout-only business with Dan, owner of Swingbellys BBQ, to serve a late-night crowd that Frank said have limited food options at those hours.

“Dan and I have been down here for over 12 years now, and the only time you could

2 get food late at night was 24-Hour Bagel, and West End Pizza recently started staying open until 4 a.m.,” Monteforte said. “But at that point if I’m out at night … what’s better when you’re on your walk home and you can get a burger and fries for $10.”

The menu is simple — Blackdoor Burger serves only one kind of burger: A patty that’s 80 percent beef and 20 percent fat, cooked on a flatiron grill and served with pickles, onions, tomatoes, cheese, and a special “red light” sauce on a toasted Martin’s potato bun. The burgers are $6 and a side of fries $4 (add $2 for the homemade cheese sauce).

“We’ve had a lot of positive feedback,” said Monteforte, who also owns a construction company but grew up working in the food service industry. “When we were kids, Dan and I ran a catering company out of my mom and dad’s kitchen. We come from a background of Italian-style cooking with our grandmother. Our whole goal was to always work together at some point … the sandwich shop was our first endeavor officially.”

They came up with a speakeasy-type concept similar to discreet establishments only found in New York City that Frank said has generated a large following with no traditional advertising.

“We didn’t do any advertising at all — we only told close friends and relatives that we were doing it,” he said. “We didn’t want a traditional take-out window. The idea was to keep it as simple as possible.”

Frank said he gave out business cards to local business owners and residents to spread the word about Blackdoor Burger, with a “burger splash” logo designed by Sarah Monaghan of nearby Scout Design Shop.

“There was no address and no location or anything, not even on the business cards,” Monteforte said. “I’ve been dropping little burger splashes in chalk on sidewalks with an arrow directing people. Our whole thing is, come and find us.”

The guerrilla marketing strategy worked and has attracted long lines of customers.

“The neighbors don’t complain,” Monteforte said. “We keep the noise down and maintain it — it’s well controlled, and people are happy.”

The concept has also caught on through social media, particularly Instagram, where smiling patrons peering through the door are regularly tagged in photos.

“It’s a simple and delicious late-night snack,” said recent customer Dave Yolinsky, a West End resident. “It’s easy to find if you want it bad enough, but it’s kind of lost in a corner of Long Beach just waiting to be found. Blackdoor Burger should be a must try on every local foodie’s hit list.”

Blacksmith’s Breads — serving amazing artisanal creations in the West End

lacksmith’s Breads might be relatively new to Long Beach, but owners Ray Smith and Michael Blackburn are no strangers to the local food scene.

Both worked at Caffe Laguna before Superstorm Sandy forced it to close and after that were on the line at the popular Lost & Found. It was there where the two opened a pop-up bakery offering their baked goods and began building their customer base.

“Once the pop-up started getting popular, we said ‘Oh, we can do that,’” said Blackburn, who goes by “Black.”

A customer named Tom said it’s been “great,” as he finished his soft-boiled egg tartine.

“It can only be gotten here,” he added.

And it’s not just Tom enjoying everything Blacksmith’s has to offer — shelves filled to the brim with different types of bread were nearly depleted before noon on a hot Sunday morning.

As the shop’s name would suggest, bread is the specialty. It’s best known for its breads made via the sourdough method — the fermentation of dough via naturally occurring yeast.

“Our baguettes, croissants and brioche have commercial yeast in it,” Smith said. “All the other breads we do are sourdough-based.”

If you’re in the mood for a loaf, be sure to get there early, as Blacksmith’s does not hold bread for customers.

But man, and restaurants, cannot live on bread alone.

“We realized we were going to have to do something else,” Smith said.

Blacksmith’s offers a variety of coffee and espresso-based drinks made with Stumptown Coffee, an Oregon-based roaster.

Smith said he uses Stumptown beans because the company, like the Long Beach bakery, takes pride in respecting fresh, organic ingredients.

“That makes our job way easier,” he said.

Other ingredients are sourced from local providers, including the bakery’s flour, which is stone ground — which is believed to create a more nutritious and more flavorful loaf than mass-produced flour.

Blacksmith’s also offers different specials, such as the waffle served with rhubarb ice cream and strawberry jam that was avail able over the June 30 weekend.

While the name is a convenient combination of Smith’s and Blackburn’s last names, that’s not how the bakery first got its moniker. During its pop-up days, all loaves were made entirely by hand — the same way a blacksmith works with iron.

“It wasn’t until after we opened that we realized it was our names too,” Smith said.

Island Thyme

Quickly becoming a corner staple

sland Thyme’s menu is diverse, with options for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans. But there’s one thing that every items has in common — they’re all made with the freshest ingredients possible.

“We source everything from nearby farms,” co-owner Jon Keyser said. “We make everything ourselves, right here in our kitchen.”

Keyser, along with his partner RJ Moulton, opened Island Thyme on West Beech Street, on the corner of New York Avenue, about two months ago and the eatery has already earned the love of many Long Beach diners.

“It’s been crazy just keeping up with everything,” Keyser said.

The restaurateur said he wanted to open a location to provide people with a healthy alternative to other restaurants near the beach. The appeal, he added, extends beyond health nuts.

The most important meal of the day is served until 11 a.m. on weekdays and up to 2 p.m. on weekends — giving diners plenty of time to chow down on avocado toast, wheat and oat pancakes served with fruit or an acai bowl with plenty of add-ins — ranging from gluten-free granola to hemp seeds — to choose from. The bowls are one of Island Thyme’s specialties, Keyser said, and come in an acai, matcha (a powder made from green tea leaves) and blue majik (an extract created from the organism spirulina) base. You can also order a smoothie or juice on the go.

Women Who Rule the Beach Beth Skudin, matriarch of the surfing community

“I always love to be in the water,” Beth Skudin said, her bathing suit still wet under her cover-up. “It doesn’t feel like work.”

Beth is known as the matriarch of the Long Beach surfing community. She described herself as the “resident mom” at Skudin Surf, the popular surfing school in Long Beach, with locations in Rockaway, Nickerson and Tobay beaches.

For the Skudins, surfing is a family affair.

For three generations, they have been surfing, swimming, teaching and working as lifeguards on Long Island.

Beth, 63, and her husband, Dave, surfed together as children with Beth’s father, Dick Bolton, a former surfer, artist and Jones Beach lifeguard. They continued her father’s tradition and shared their love for the sport and culture with their four sons, Dave, Cliff, Will and Woody.

Will is a professional big-wave surfer competing in the elite Big Wave World Tour, while Cliff is working his way up as a pro and competed in many big-wave contests. Both

run Skudin Surf, and co-founded Surf for All, a non-profit that organizes surf outings and events for people with physical and developmental disabilities, as well as war veterans and disadvantaged youth.

The Skudins have lived in some of the most famous surf spots around the world, including Hawaii and North Carolina. But Beth said she always returns to Long Beach.

These days, she coaches swimming at the Long Beach Recreation Center — something she’s been doing on and off since 2009, although she’s been teaching swimming and surfing for about 40 years.

“You could try [surfing], and the next thing you know you’re part of the surf culture, because you’ve fallen in love with riding the waves,” she said.

Beth also helped launch Skudin Swim last year, a program at Nickerson Beach that trains, manages and hires lifeguards throughout Nassau County.

“It’s a family business,” she said. “It’s really fun to work together like that.”

She also said that she taught the neighborhood girls — family friends — how to swim, because she wanted to keep her father’s mission alive.

Beth attended Bethany College in West

Virginia, where she was part of a men’s swim team because a women’s team didn’t exist.

Title IX, a 1972 federal civil rights law that protects students from gender discrimination, had not yet been passed.

“It wasn’t weird to me,” she said, “but college kids thought it was weird. They were like, ‘Oh my gosh, how could you be on a men’s swim team?’ I grew up swimming with the boys.”

She said the college wanted her presence on the team to garner interest from women. And by the time she was a junior, she helped create a women’s team.

“It had a big influence on my life — just to push yourself and not have limitations,” she said.

Beth also recalled teaching Long Beach lifeguard Meghan Gallagher — who is also featured in the Women Who Rule the Beach series — how to surf.

“I remember the day she first cut across the face of the wave,” Beth said.

Whether she’s coaching the swim club or teaching at Nickerson Beach, Beth puts all of her effort into everything she does.

“That’s what I mean about the ocean — it brings out the best in you,” she said. “It teaches you to give it your all.”

Kara and Kim, bringing yoga to the beach

Feeling the wind in your hair, the sand between your toes and the warmth of the sun on your body. That’s what you get when you attend a beach yoga session taught by Long Beach locals Kara Gumiela and Kimberly Pierson.

“It’s like beach therapy,” Gumiela said, “going to the beach for your healing.”

What started out as a few people getting together on the beach spread via word of mouth and grew into an expanding community of yogis and reiki healers, or instructors trained in holistic energy healing.

The yoga instructors independently teach classes on the beach based on a weekly schedule posted on Instagram and Facebook.

Gumiela, 30, previously worked as a nanny for local kids. She said she got into yoga about five years ago when she decided running on the treadmill just wasn’t cutting it. She started taking yoga classes at Synergy Fitness and fell in love with the calmness she felt after each session.

“After that, I was hooked,” she said.

Gumiela became a certified instructor and began teaching yoga at New York Beach Club in Atlantic Beach.

“I always knew I could help people, and I knew I loved teaching children, and I was like, I want to become a yoga teacher because I want to make people feel good,” she said.

Jennifer Hanono, surfer, paddle-boarder and environmentalist

“Working in the ocean has been such a positive experience for me, and I enjoy sharing that with people,” said Jennifer Hanono, a surfer, freediver and stand up paddleboard expert, who runs paddleboard lessons at Skudin Surf.

Hanono, who is originally from the Five Towns, is now a Long Beach resident who has been surfing and paddleboarding for five years.

She said she has always loved the water, but her relationship with it actually started in Sweden, where she spent summers on the lake with her family when she was younger.

When she moved to Long Beach, Hanono’s experience with cold, fresh water helped her transition to ocean water, and she soon found she had an aptitude for stand up paddleboarding.

She is a Reiki Master Healer, and incorporates mindfulness and pranayama breathing exercises into her teachings.

“When I went to yoga, I felt better,” Pierson said, recalling when the activity first piqued her interest. “But I wanted to know more.”

She became certified three years ago, and said that yoga teacher training was an experience that helped heal her pain, both physical and emotional.

“I became a different person after, when I came out,” Pierson said, adding that her training came at a difficult time in her life.

She was suffering from chronic physical pain and her father died a couple of days before her training began.

“My transformation was quick and fast,” she said. “I didn’t know when I had signed up, that that was going to be my healing through one of the biggest tragedies of my life.”

The pair met at Love Integration after Gumiela took one of Pierson’s classes.

They constantly encourage their students to step out of their comfort zones and try new things.

“If it’s uncomfortable,” Pierson said, “well, that’s what yoga teaches you — how to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations.”

They noticed that some people feel intimidated by a yoga studio and are more comfortable on the beach.

“It’s like a sisterhood, and I just feel a bond,” Gumiela said.

“That’s what I think yoga is — the science of balance in the body, and mind and spirit,” added Pierson. “What you learn in our classes — it’s not just when you’re on the mat — it’s what you take off the mat.”

In addition to being active in water sports, Hanono calls herself a “steward of the sea,” and she is also passionate about conservation. She is a member of the Surfrider Foundation, and she makes an effort to spread awareness about the dangers of single-use plastics like plastic straws, utensils, bags, food containers and cups that can be harmful to the environment.

Hanono also limits the amount of chemicals she uses in her daily life, and instead, she uses natural products and cleaners that get the job done without hurting the environment.

She makes an effort to spread awareness about protecting ocean life and is involved in beach cleanups organized by Surfrider.

“Once people fall in love with the water they want to protect it too,” Hanono said.

Carol O’Neill, serving those in need

Carol O’Neill serves those in need in the community with the annual Michelle O’Neill Volleyball Tournament, a charitable event that benefits children with cancer.

She is the executive vice president of the Michelle O’Neill Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps children with cancer and special needs. The organization was founded in 1997 in memory of her daughter, Michelle O’Neill, who died from cancer in 1996.

“Long Beach is a volleyball town,” said O’Neill. “It represents Long Beach in a good light.”

This year will mark the 22nd annual volleyball tournament.

The event has grown since its inception in 1997, when there were only 11 volleyball nets and raised $17,000. Today, the tournament has grown to include 61 nets and last year raised $200,000. O’Neill says the event has grown just from word of mouth in the community.

“It’s totally amazing, and I think a lot has to do with the spirit of the community,” she said.

O’Neill said the funds go directly to the families of the children who have been diagnosed with cancer. She said that she learned firsthand how many expenses were not covered by insurance.

Meghan Gallagher, lifeguard officer breaking barriers

“I don’t really remember summers before being a Long Beach lifeguard,” said Lt. Meghan Gallagher, of the Lifeguard Patrol.

Out of six lieutenants that run the lifeguards, she’s currently the only female officer. There have been three in the history of the patrol.

“It’s crazy that we’ve only had three girls as bosses,” she said, adding that she oversees about 32 guards, both male and female.

Gallagher, 31, has been a lieutenant for three years. She oversees the “east crew,” and also serves as the captain of the women’s competition team, a group that competes in New Jersey every year. She’s been a lifeguard for 15 years.

“It was important for me to have that leadership role that the girls can go to,” Gallagher said. “It’s really important for the girls to be able to see that a female can get into some sort of power in this place.”

The funds raised by the tournament are used to help families with money for transportation, parking, wigs and even tutoring for children who have been out of school while in the hospital.

“There are so many people who come to the fundraiser who truly care,” said O’Neill.

The tournament this year will be held on Sept. 8 at Laurelton Boulevard beach. There will be live music, a raffle and special visits

from the children being supported by the foundation.

in 2004, when there were very few girls on the patrol. Since then, she said, the amount of women on the crews has drastically increased.

When she was a rookie, there were no women in charge to look up to, Gallagher said.

“It’s great to have a figure for [the girls] to go to,” she said, “and be like, ‘Hey, listen, this was me 15 years ago — I get it.’”

For Gallagher, being a lifeguard is a family affair. Her father, Patrick Gallagher, is the former Chief of Lifeguards.

“I grew up around it and that’s always what I wanted to strive to be,” she said, adding that she was always a part of a swim team.

When Gallagher isn’t keeping a watchful eye over swimmers at the beach, she’s teaching English to kids who speak foreign languages or coaching junior varsity lacrosse at Long Beach High School. It works, she said, because she has summers off, which allows her to lifeguard.

“It’s definitely shaped the people that I’m around and the way I interact with people,” she said. “It’s gotten me to be patient.”

Long Beach International Film Festival showcases local and international talent

By Elizabeth Thompson The seventh annual Long Beach International Film Festival kicks off Aug. 1, a four-day event showcasing films and more at the beachfront Allegria Hotel, with select screenings taking place at the newly renovated Regal Lynbrook 13 & RPX. The new theater is the most significant change to the festival, and festival co-founder and Long Island native Craig Weintraub described the new amenities, which consist of recliner seating with a push button as well as food and drinks as, “one of the best ways to watch a film.”

More than 6,000 attendees are expected to turn out for the festival, which features film screenings, musical performances and food tasting events and more.

Professional and amateur filmmakers from all over the world will compete for a series of Jury, Festival Honor and Audience Awards throughout the festival.

“It’s a happening event and we’re able to draw in on some local celebrities to see what the festival is about and be our guests,” said Weintraub.

Opening Night Films kicks off the event on Aug. 1. Past films featured at the opening event include “The Wisdom to Know the Difference,” which earned a celebrity appearance by actor Daniel Baldwin. Other notable past attendees include actor Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson and Burt Young, famous for playing the role of Paulie in “Rocky.”

The festival is not just for film lovers — Thursday, Aug. 2, for the second year in a row, the festival will be partnering with food and film festival Devour! for a unique experience that integrates food and film. NY Fit Fest returns to Long Beach

By Jen Curran The NY Fit Fest, hosted by the Allegria Hotel, is set to return to Long Beach on Sept. 29, a day-long festival that features a variety of fitness activities for people of all skill levels.

Now in its second year, the event, sponsored by the BMW of Freeport, is set to feature worldrenowned athletes, celebrity trainers, and expert influencers that will lead an array of classes and activities, including surfing, CrossFit, Sunrise Yoga, Rooftop Cyclebar, meditation, kickboxing, Zumba — even pole dancing.

Attendees can also enjoy speed and agility training as well as a variety of lectures on nutrition, beauty and mindfulness.

In addition, popular local businesses and vendors, like Beauty Bar 1947, Skudin Surf, Rebuild the Beach, Love Integration Yoga, Barrier Island Cross Fit, LB Locals and Ooh la la boutiques will be in attendance.

Oceanfront home boasts stunning views — and features

By Anthony Rifilato At the end of Michigan Street sits an unassuming oceanfront home tucked between an apartment building and cozy bungalows.

But viewed from the oceanside, the four-level modern beach house made of stone and natural cedar is nothing short of eye-catching.

“The front of the house is kind of normal, but if you look at it from the ocean, it’s huge,” said owner Mark Palmer, who lives at the home with his wife, Casey, and their two teenage children who attend Long Beach High School. “We designed it to retain the feel from the street — it slopes down to the street, and the back of it goes up.”

The five-bedroom home was built on helical piles on a vacant lot and took three years to build. It was completed last year under new Federal Emergency Management Agency height requirements.

“We started after [Hurricane] Sandy — it was a piece of sand before that and one of the last empty residential lots in the West End,” Palmer said. “The first floor doesn’t start for 10 feet.”

The home was built by A&E Builders, whose co-owners, Andrew and Eric Rodabaugh, have been working and living in Long Beach for the past 12 years.

The 3,700 square-foot home — not including FEMA space — boasts an in-ground swimming pool, three decks facing the ocean with stunning views, five bathrooms and a pneumatic vacuum elevator that uses air instead of cables for lift between floors, according to Terry Stewart Interior Design Associates, the interior design firm Mark and Casey brought in to help with interior layouts, kitchen and bathroom design, deck planning and finish selection.

“I always dreamed of having a house on the beach and this is absolutely our dream home — we had it all custom designed,” Palmer said. “Our goal was to make it a midcentury modern beach house — it’s all very open. I like things that are clean and simple but we tried to make it beachy too. We did all sorts of smart home stuff so it’s a pretty high-tech house, all Lutron enabled, which is a home automation system.”

The home is also eco-friendly, he said, with solar panels and other features.

“We basically have a tiny room at the top of our house — there’s no boiler in the house; it’s all high tech,” he said. “In the summer, we basically don’t have an electrical bill.”

Palmer, 53, an executive at a software company, said his family moved to Long Beach for the good schools, particularly its International Baccalaureate program, and the community.

“She came out here to play volleyball for years,” Palmer said of Casey, a fit model in New York City. “We were looking at places to live and she said, ‘There’s this place called

4 Long Beach.’ She told me all about it and I thought it was awesome.

“We checked the schools and they had an IB program — it’s one of the best-kept secrets in Long Beach — but it was the overall feel of Long Beach,” he added. “I love the way people bike around, the city, the beach is amazing and the schools are great. Both my kids play volleyball for Long Beach High School. We’re active at the beach and we’re active within the volleyball program at the high school. We’re a volleyball family.”
