LONG BEACH GUIDE
A LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHERS Long Beach is coming back — better, smarter and stronger. Sandy hit us hard, but it couldn’t keep us down for long. The 100-year superstorm that struck in October 2012 destroyed or damaged so much on the barrier island. But over the past year and a half, we’ve come back strong. The city was quick to build a beautiful new boardwalk. Hundreds of residents have rebuilt and restored their homes — many of which had to be raised to comply with FEMA regulations. Businesses have rebuilt and refurbished. The city, with the help of state and federal funds, has plans to “harden” the infrastructure to better withstand future storms, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is set to start a major project to build dunes and restore our beaches. Improved bulkheading and other measures are proposed for the bay front. In another positive development, this may finally be the year that the Superblock becomes more than an empty lot, as a respected developer has won approval to build twin residential towers on the site, along with new retail space on the boardwalk. Not everything is back to normal. There are still people displaced from their homes. Long Beach Medical Center was not allowed to reopen after the storm, and its facility was recently sold to South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside. Residents continue to be concerned about the lack of a full-service hospital on the island. The movie theater remains shuttered, although the marquee promises a reopening. ••• And now, after a particularly long and frigid winter, Memorial Day is here, marking the official start of the beach season and the unofficial start of summer. Those of us with sand in our shoes look forward to the respite of long, lazy summer days as we return to our beloved ocean and beach. Long Beach has much to offer in every season, but summer is its time to shine. A look through this year’s Guide reveals just how jam-packed with activities this summer will be. As always, we have tried to make the Guide the most comprehensive source of information about Civitas Ad Mar, the City by the Sea, as well as the adjoining communities of East Atlantic Beach, Lido Beach and Point Lookout. The Long Beach Guide is a special publication of the Long Beach Herald, the hometown newspaper of the barrier isle. The Guide is published in cooperation with the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce, and we are honored to mark another year as the official publication of the chamber. We hope you find this issue of the Long Beach Guide useful and informative, and that you enjoy reading the Long Beach Herald 52 weeks a year. Have a great summer, and we’ll see you on the beach! P.S. If you’re not currently receiving the Herald by mail each week, please see our ad on page 21 for subscription information, or look for the enclosed subscription envelope, or find us online at www.liherald.com/subscribe. GREETINGS FROM THE CHAMBER
I
n the wake of Hurricane Sandy, 2013 became a year of rebuilding, regrouping and healing for the City by the Sea.
While there is still plenty of work left to do, a united community worked together and experienced a wonderful summer that culminated with the reopening of what is now the most beautiful and glorious boardwalk on the Atlantic Coast. Now, the city is ready for locals and visitors alike to begin flocking to our beautiful seashore and boardwalk, and frequent our numerous eating establishments that offer a wide variety of cuisines to appease even the most discerning palate, not to mention a slew of merchants and specialty shops that offer something for everyone. Just imagine beautiful blue skies with billowy clouds above and softly crashing waves hitting the shores of Long Beach. The city is ready to offer a wonderful canvas for lazy and carefree days of swimming, boating, or just plain relaxation with a good book on our beach. In October, the chamber ran its most successful Restaurant Week. Now, the first signs that a glorious summer is on its way was the hugely successful Restaurant Week held during the last week of April and first week of May, coinciding with the first of the chamber’s three summer street fairs. The chamber has further scheduled special events for this summer to help stimulate business in the Long Beach community; the chamber will hold two additional street fairs and carnivals, one in July and another in September, featuring eating establishments, Michael J. Kerr President
merchants, rides and various family activities mostly from barrier island and Island Park businesses. As always, the chamber continues to aggressively promote the business community of Long Beach and the surrounding areas by providing effective Michael J. Kerr meetings and networking events that include education, legislative advocacy, business information and community projects. For the remainder of 2014, the chamber will continue to plan additional events and promotions for the winter and holiday seasons, starting with the mid-October 2014 Stanley Fleishman Restaurant Week. On Nov. 2, the chamber will host its 51st Annual Dinner Dance. As always the chamber will be striving toward “moving our businesses forward.” Finally, we would like to thank our board of directors and dedicated office manager, Janet Cohen, whose efforts are responsible for the success of all Mark Tannenbaum that the chamber accomplishes. All of us at the Long Beach Chamber wish everyone a wonderful summer and hope to see you on our beautiful beaches. For more information about our wonderful City by the Sea, visit the chamber’s website at www. thelongbeachchamber.com.

HOW TO REACH THE HERALD In many ways, putting out a newspaper each week is an interactive process. We need your participation to do our job, so we offer you — our readers and partners — a reminder of how and when to reach us. To tell us what’s going on in your community, or news of upcoming events sponsored by civic, service, religious or community organizations, the deadline is noon the Friday prior to publication. Notices are printed free of charge. We prefer that you send them by email. Faxed and mailed items are also welcome; they should be typed and double spaced. We also welcome the news of your family life, your business life and your social life. We accept, at no charge, obituaries and Neighbors in the News items, including awards, honors, births, graduations, marriages and promotions. We value your opinions, and provide a forum for them in our popular Letters to the Editor space. You can also add your comments to stories on our website. Email: lbeditor@liherald.com

HISTORY
L
ong Beach — what a place! A privileged few knew why, and as the population continues to grow, so does the number of those in the know. Once a playground for the wealthy, now a sandbox for all, the Long Beach Historical and Preservation Society’s goal is to attract an interested audience and tell our island’s tale. Our Long Beach Museum is complete with swelling archives and historians who will tell all. Geologists love the term “barrier island” — separated from the mainland in its early days, and accessible primarily by flat-bottom boats and later by a swaying, primitive wooden bridge, it was a place where plenty of unorthodox behavior went on. Everyone was touched by Long Beach’s natural beauty, white sand and friendly sea and they could be counted on to come back for more. From the seasonal migrations of returning Algonquin families in the 18th century to the Gatsby-esque residents of the Roaring ’20s — who returned each year to the West End — Long Beach was a city of play, a safe haven. Senator William Reynolds had a vision for a planned community, but
Courtesy Long Beach Historical Society
Villa Modestina, Dr. Antonio Fanoni’s cottage on Laurelton Boulevard and Penn Street, was built on 20 building lots, each 20x100 feet. In Italian, modestina means very modest, however it was not tongue-in-cheek; it was actually named after Dr. Fanoni’s mother, Modesta! because of WWI, the “Estates” concept met financial failure, leaving large summer homes vacant. The opportunity to buy large homes for large families to live year round meant the barrier island would become a safe, healthy home for children and families. With Ellis Island’s new Americans at our door, and the Great War behind us, many of these families chose to live on here. Their children were true
first-generation Americans. From Village Hall to City Hall, they continued to build homes, schools, libraries, churches, synagogues and movie theaters — there was a time when five theaters operated harmoniously at the same time. Even during the crash of the stock market, 1929 saw the opening of the Granada Towers and the Lido Hotel. The quality of life here was uncompromised and protected on our barrier island.

FIRE DEPARTMENT he Long Beach Fire Department responds with approximately 150 volunteer firefighters and 30 career firefighters.
T
Its communications office is staffed 24/7 by 20 part-time dispatchers. Richard Corbett is currently the Chief of the Department, and has 28 years of dedicated service to the LBFD. He previously served as chief from 201113. During his previous term, he led the department through Tropical Storm Irene and Hurricane Sandy. Alongside him are 1st Assistant Chief Robert Tuccillo and 2nd Assistant Chief Joseph Miller Jr. Together and they work to ensure that the city receives the best emergency service coverage possible. The department’s firefighters are extensively trained in the latest firefighting tactics. Many have also received special training in vehicle extrication, hazardous materials response, rope rescue and other technical rescue techniques. Three ambulances are staffed with emergency medical technicians, many of whom are trained to provide advanced life support procedures. Last year, the department responded to more than 5,300 alarms and is one of the busiest departments on Long Island. These included reports of fire, EMS calls, auto accidents, water rescues and other types of emergency calls, in addition to outside requests for assistance from surrounding jurisdictions. The LBFD works hand-in-hand with our dedicated Police Department and other city services during times of inclement weather, such as hurricanes and blizzards as well as during blackouts or other major widespread emergencies. The Fire Department operates out of three fire stations: Headquarters is

Long Beach firefighters responded to a fire at 11 Armour St. in the Canals on July 18. located at the rear of City Hall; Station One is at the corner of Maple Boulevard and East Park Avenue, and Station Two is located at the corner of Indiana and West Park avenues. With the support of our residents and the City Council, we are equipped with some of the finest equipment available. The department responds with four fire engines, a 100-foot-tall ladder tower, a 95-foot-tall tower ladder, a heavy rescue truck, three advanced life support ambulances, a floodlight truck, and a field communications vehicle. Also, several utility vehicles respond with a jet ski and other water rescue equipment to reports of emergencies in our surrounding bodies of water. These four-wheeldrive vehicles also assist during times of inclement weather. We have a fire training facility in the rear parking lot of City Hall. This allows our firefighters to practice firefighting and rescue techniques from the safety of a controlled environment. Constant upgrades are being built into the facility allowing training in an ever-changing
environment. Members also enroll at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy in Bethpage to further their firefighting training to provide themselves with knowledge and safety of the fire service to be prepared for any manmade or natural disaster that may arise. The safety of our manpower is of the utmost importance. Our members train at least weekly and year round to ensure both their safety and the safety of the residents that we are sworn to protect. The members of the Long Beach Fire Department are ready to respond and serve our community 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. We would also like to reassure the residents of this great city that although our firehouses and apparatus sustained severe damage during Sandy, we are rebuilding a stronger Fire Department RICHARD CORBETT Chief of Department For an application to join the Long Beach Volunteer Fire Department, go to www.longbeachfd.com.

Furthermore, we have our own Ice Arena that offers cool family fun all year long. The Department of Parks & Recreation has many programs and activities for a broad range of interests, for ages 3 to 55 and over. The recreation section of this guide lists an overview of events, activities, camps and entertainment for you and your family to enjoy, as well as useful information about the beach, including fees, where to purchase seasonal and daily beach passes, safety rules, surfing beaches and more. Whether
you live in Long Beach or are just visiting, we invite you to take advantage of the facilities and all we have to offer. Long Beach will once again team up with the LIRR for the very popular get-away package that will enable transportation, beach admission, Paul Ferrante and discounts at participating stores throughout the City of Long Beach. Our Summer Concert Series will return to the beach starting July 2 on New York Avenue. Concerts will be held on National Boulevard Beach on Monday evenings, on New York Avenue Beach on Wednesday evenings, and Neptune Boulevard Beach on Thursday evenings. This year, we are adding a new concert series in Kennedy Plaza on select Friday nights. Please come on down and enjoy these free concerts as our local bands are sure to impress. I am proud of our facilities and programming and our dedicated staff strives to give our residents and visitors the best experience possible. We hope that you and your family will take advantage of all the Long Beach Recreation Department has to offer. Please visit our website at www.longbeachny. gov/rec for up to date information. RULES OF THE BEACH SAFE SUMMER FUN It is important that all beach visitors obey the rules of the beach and listen to the lifeguards. Whether you are a life-long resident or a day-tripper, please take time to review the following guidelines for a safe summer in our beautiful city by the sea.
BASIC RULES OF THE BEACH Q Learn to swim and never swim alone. Q Only swim when lifeguards are on duty. Q Lifeguards are on duty, weather permitting, from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. weekends only from May 24-June 15 (including Memorial Day Monday), and daily from June 21-Sept.1. Beach passes are required when lifeguards are on duty. Q Always go to the beach with an adult, and swim in front of the lifeguard between the green flags that define the swimming area. Q If you are in trouble, call out for help and wave your arms above your head. Do not panic. Q Do not hesitate to call a lifeguard for help in any medical situation on the sand or in the water. Q Stay off the rock jetties and never swim near them. Q Check water conditions with lifeguards for undercurrents or sandbars. Both can be dangerous. Q Report dangerous situations to a lifeguard. Q Check the depth of underwater surface by jumping or walking, not diving head-first! Q Do not attempt to make any rescue yourself. Get a lifeguard — they are trained to do the job. Do not interfere with lifeguards making a rescue. Q When you hear the whistle, look at the lifeguard chair. They may want your attention. Q Beaches close at 6 p.m. Swimming is prohibited when lifeguards are not on duty! Q Surfing is permitted on specific beaches. Visit longbeachny.gov/beach for surfing, concert and event schedules. Q People are not permitted on the beach between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

FARMERS MARKET Long Beach residents and visitors welcomed back the Farmers Market at Kennedy Plaza on Wednesday, May 1. For six years, the popular market, which runs Wednesdays and Saturdays through Nov. 16, has featured regional producers offering fresh products including vegetables, herbs, fruits, plants, baked goods, fish, shellfish, eggs, cheeses, pasta, pickles, fair trade coffee, gluten free products, handcrafted soaps, poultry, pork and much more. This year the market will introduce new producers offering yogurt, nut butters, organic herb and vegetable plants. “We are very happy to be back in Long Beach,” said Market Manager and Program Director Bernadette Martin. “We have lots of new products to offer, and residents whose gardens were damaged by Hurricane Sandy will have a wide selection of plants, including flats and hanging baskets, for the spring planting season.” Visit the Kennedy Plaza Farmers Market at 1 West Chester St. through Nov. 16, on Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information visit www.ligreenmarket.org or contact Bernadette Martin at bmartin@ligreenmarket.org.

POLICE COMMISSIONER MESSAGE
S
ummer’s here, and protecting the safety of our residents is naturally the first priority of the Long Beach Police Department.
While we expect to have a tremendous summer, we will have many challenges with the increase in activities throughout the city. As you may have read, you will see additional and varied vendors on the boardwalk. With that in mind, we are happy to announce that our summer special officers program is in full operation and officers will be back on the “boards” ensuring the safety of all our residents and visitors. It is important to note that there has been a very aggressive approach to training within the LBPD. The Long Beach Police Department has begun active shooter training using City Hall, so we can respond rapidly and efficiently should the need arise. We have held training seminars at the Allegria Hotel for controlled party dispersal addressing underage drinking and social media training. Many officers have received Narcan training to add another tool for us to deal with the opioid problems facing all communities. We anticipate all officers trained in the administration of this life saving drug by year's end. The Long Beach Police Department has been a leading force in the fight against drunk and drugged driving. There are only three drug recognition experts (DRE) on Long Island, and we have one of them. We will be training 20 officers in the next month on Portable Breath Testers to aid in the fight against impaired driving. In 2013, the Police Department saw
a 50 percent increase in arrests for these offenses and we are on target for another major increase over last year. Along with our enforcement of DWI laws, we will be taking a zero tolerance approach to offenders to the quality of life our residents have come to Michael Tangney expect. We will have additional patrols this summer season utilizing beach vehicles, bicycles and motorcycles to ensure a peaceful and safe summer. Along with the many changes observed around the city, such as our new Boardwalk, stores and homes, there have been many changes in the Long Beach Police Department. Three of our lieutenants, Philip Ragona, Daniel Larson and James Canner have retired. Detective Orlando Garcia and officers James Larson and Christopher Orza have also hung up their uniforms and we wish them all well. We have hired six new officers — three from the NYPD that were put on the streets immediately — and three that are currently in the Suffolk County Police Academy graduating in May 2014 and will be on the street this summer. We welcome everyone to our city to enjoy all that Long Beach has to offer, from our beautiful beaches and boardwalk to our fine restaurants and special events. Please remember to drive and bike carefully, and obey traffic laws. We ask everyone to share the road and be extra mindful so we can reduce the number of accidents even further. Let's have a wonderful and safe summer. MICHAEL TANGNEY Police Commissioner

LONG BEACH HUMANE SOCIETY
E
stablished in 1976, the Long Beach Humane Society is a nonprofit, volunteer organization.
The Humane Society exists solely to champion the ethical and humane treatment of the most unfortunate and neglected animals that are rescued. The group has been able to survive and continue its mission through the generous public contributions that help fund and support its work. The society's mission is to fight for the humane and ethical treatment of all animals and to shelter, feed and provide veterinary care to felines it rescues or those who are surrendered. Once under our care, our goal is to find our cats and kittens good homes/parents. The humane society, which is a separate and independent
entity from the Long Beach Animal Shelter, formed a rescue and adoption center, nicknamed "Kitty Cove" in May 2005. Kitty Cove is open to the public seven days a week and located at 126 Austin Blvd. in Island Park. The facility is open Monday-Friday, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 4-8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. In recent years, the society has worked in conjunction with charities such as Maddie’s Fund Pet Rescue Project, Purina Pet for Seniors, as well as North Shore Animal League. Each month, North Shore Animal League brings its mobile van to the Kitty Cove adoption center to help puppies find a loving home in the community. For more information about volunteer, donation and sponsorship opportunities, or if you are looking to give an animal a home, call (516) 594-1721 or (516) 889-PETS (7387) Visit lbhsny.petfinder.com or email adoptionslbhs@att.net for more information.

Anthony Rifilato/Herald
City officials presented a proclamation in April to volunteers who have been running the animal shelter. The facility is now being run by Posh Pets Rescue and volunteers. The City Council voted unanimously this year to enter into a one-year contract with New York City-based animal rescue group Posh Pets Rescue to operate the Long Beach Animal Shelter At its April 16 meeting, the council approved a $95,000 contract with Posh Pets, which has been featured on NBC’s “New York Live” and is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and placement of homeless animals, many of which are saved from imminent euthanasia at city shelters, according to the group’s website. The Long Beach shelter, at 770 Park
Place, will be the first to be managed by Posh Pets, and will continue to operate as a “no kill” shelter. The city’s contract with the group began April 19, and includes options to renew annually. Posh Pets will take in all animals surrendered by city residents as well as those that are seized and brought to the shelter by the city’s animal control officers, and will provide veterinary services, kennel help, food and litter, and cover administration costs. Call (516) 431-7674, email mslondonspets@aol.com or visit http://poshpetsrescue.org for more information.

SUPERINTENDENT MESSAGE
L
ong Beach Public Schools have rebounded from the devastation of Superstorm Sandy. We started the school year with all of our students housed in their home schools again, with most of the storm damage repaired.
We rebuilt the entire first floor of West School and relocated the boiler and mechanical room to the second floor. We took other precautions against future flooding by changing construction materials and raising electrical and heating systems above flood levels. With the help of FEMA funding, we took similar precautionary measures in other buildings throughout the district. At the same time, we have been completing work on our facilities under the Bond Preservation Plan. This year we opened the new prekindergarten wing at Lido School. In addition, Lido students now have access to a reconfigured gym, rebuilt classrooms and a new library. At the middle school, we reconfigured the science classrooms and repaired the damage to the gym floor. A remodeled lower lobby at Long Beach High School now serves as an art gallery. Students and visitors enter the main floor of the school to a rebuilt upper lobby, guidance and main office complex. High school students are being taught in
refurbished science labs, a new choral music room, new music practice rooms, a new cardio and weight room, and a newly constructed video and sound production studio. Our students continue to excel in many areas. Long Beach High School David Weiss has once again appeared on the Washington Post’s list of top high schools in the nation. The district received national recognition as a Best Community for Music Education for the fourth consecutive year. Fragments, the high school literary and arts magazine, has won recognition as one of the nation’s top high school publications. Our science research students have represented the district successfully at regional and state competitions. Elementary and middle school teams qualified for the Odyssey of the Mind state competition. We are also very proud to note that Long Beach High School is one of three high schools in Nassau County to graduate International Baccalaureate diploma recipients, and that the middle school is a candidate school for the IB Middle Years Program. Please remember to visit our website, www.lbeach.org, for the most up-to-date information and notices about our schools and our adult learning opportunities. DAVID WEISS Superintendent of Schools

LONG BEACH MEDICAL CENTER
A
U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge on May 12 approved the sale of the Sandy-shuttered Long Beach Medical Center to South Nassau Communities Hospital, a move that is expected to pave the way for the opening of an urgent care center — possibly by this summer — followed by a 24/7 emergency department.
South Nassau’s redevelopment of the LBMC campus will commence promptly with the establishment of a modern 21st century family medicine-urgent care center. The facility will provide state-of-the-art treatment and triage for a wide array of urgent medical conditions as well as ambulatory care, with subspecialty backup supported through an integrated information technology system connecting the center to South Nassau’s main campus in Oceanside. Laboratory and radiology imaging services will be provided on-site, as well. Care will be provided on a walk-in basis, with no appointments required. Patients who are assessed as in need of further emergency care or hospitalization will be transported to South Nassau or the hospital of their choice via on-site ambulance services. Upon state approval, which will be sought immediately following the sale closing in June, South Nassau will convert and expand the urgent care center to a state-of-art, freestanding 911-emergency receiving facility, though a reopening date has yet to be set. Currently, patients in need of medical care are transported to nearby facilities such as SNCH and Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, while some are also taken to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway and Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre. South Nassau currently runs a family practice facility at 761 Franklin Blvd., and the telephone number to call is (516) 5442351. An urgent care center recently opened in the West End, CityMd, described as a state-of-the-art facility that provides urgent-care services to ill or injured patients, at 904 W. Beech
Dr. Neil Hadpawat of CityMD. St. Though not the 911 ambulance-receiving facility that many residents have called for, many said that the office fills a void in Long Beach by easing the burden on the Fire Department by taking in patients with non-critical injuries who would otherwise be transported to an emergency room. Residents and visitors should always call 911 in an emergency, but they can also call the Long Beach Fire Department in an emergency directly at (516) 889-7800 for the quickest response. For non-emergencies, please call (516) 431-2434.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR COUNTY LEGISLATOR
L
ike so many of you, I am looking forward to the summer months. To me, nothing is better than to sit outside on a warm summer evening and watch as the stars come out.
It’s even better sitting on the beach, where it seems the stars are so much brighter. While so many will have to forego their usual vacation plans and stay local, we are lucky to live in an area that has so much to offer and is a destination for so many who live elsewhere. Our beach has been named one of the best, and many families spend a whole day going into the ocean, playing sand sports or just relaxing under the sun. On summer evenings, we can enjoy the fare at our many superb restaurants that offer outside dining or we can dance to the music at the summer concerts. For those who are athletic, they can join one of the many volleyball teams and compete to be the best of the season. Our children can ďŹ ll up their days by going to the various summer camp programs or playing in the many sports that are offered such as baseball and basketball. On rainy days, we can enjoy a great book or DVD from our wonderful library that hosts art exhibitions, discussions and a host of other activities. Our Recreation Center has an indoor pool, and for those who want to work out, there is a weight room, cardio machines and a variety of exercise classes. Once again, we will welcome the summer with our annual
Memorial Day Parade, a great event to help us remember and honor those who served and died for our country. We will be welcoming back the Farmers Market, which offers not only locally grown food but serves as a gathering place where residents catch up with one Denise Ford another while they cool themselves off under the trees at Kennedy Plaza. As the chairwomen of the Public Safety Committee in the Nassau County Legislature, I urge you to take care this summer. Always wear sunscreen when going outside. Since so many ride bikes, please be sure to follow the rules of the road, ride within the designated lanes on the boardwalk and wear your helmets. When at the beach, swim near a lifeguard and don’t go in the water when there are none on duty. Drink plenty of water especially when it’s very hot and humid and don’t forget your pets. They need water too and do not leave them in hot cars. My family and I love living in Long Beach where we can bask in the warmth and friendliness of our neighbors. We are a generous city always willing to help out whenever called upon. I am glad that my husband and I have made this home for our children. I am honored to be your legislator and friend. Enjoy the summer! DENISE FORD 4th Legislative District

A MESSAGE FROM THE CITY MANAGER
T
here is nothing quite like summer in Long Beach. From festivals to farmers’ markets to sports leagues, we have fun activities going on virtually every day of the week. While our beautiful beaches are phenomenal, there are so many other wonderful things to do here. To this end, we are extremely excited to announce the launch of the city’s brand new Long Beach Response app. Available for both iOS and Android mobile devices, Long Beach Response truly fulfills this City Council’s vision of being the most transparent and responsive administration in Long Beach’s rich history. If you want to read about our concerts and fireworks, it’s in the app. If you’re looking for a place to eat or find out when the next train arrives, it’s in the app. Everything our great city has to offer, from where to grab an ice cream to a
bicycle for a day, can be found in the app. All of the incredible things that make Long Beach so special will be easily accessible 24/7. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to report issues and ask Jack Schnirman questions right from your mobile device. You will receive friendly and prompt communication from our city staff, as we continue working together to create an even greater Long Beach than ever before. Whether you’ve been a resident your entire life or you’re just taking the train in for the day, you will have a user-friendly list of everything our city has to offer at your finger tips, and you will see that Long Beach is working for you. See you on the boardwalk! JACK SCHNIRMAN City manager

Everything that everyone has come to know and love about Long Beach in the summer is coming back, and more! This year is special for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that this will be our ďŹ rst full summer where our residents and visitors can access our brand-new 2.2-mile oceanfront boardwalk that runs adjacent to our beautiful 3.5-mile beach. Last year, we launched our food truck market on Riverside Boulevard, dubbed “The Shoregasboard.â€? This summer, not only are the food trucks back, but there will also be a wider variety of concessions along the beach and boardwalk than ever before, providing our residents and visitors with an abundance of choices in convenient locations. The decision to offer an unprecedented diversity of excellent quality foods, with a local avor, was based on feedback received during
the boardwalk community outreach engagement process that took place in 2013. The food options will be available beginning Memorial Day weekend. Along with our many recreation Scott J. Mandel activities, including various camps and sports programs, we are again taking to the air with the return of the recreational trapeze school. As always, we welcome everyone to check out our incredible shops and restaurants, before and after their day at the beach. Our vision for the future is to continue moving Long Beach forward. We are working hard to ensure that Long Beach reaches its potential — not just as a seaside city, but as the shining city by the sea, a leader and model of resiliency, sustainability and innovation that constantly works to improve the quality of life for our residents, businesses and visitors. Have a great summer!

NASSAU COUNTY Long Beach became a city in 1922, but it is also a part of Nassau County and certain county services and facilities are available to Long Beach residents. In fact, barrier island residents who live outside the city limits — in East Atlantic Beach to the west and Lido Beach and Point Lookout to the east — depend on them. Nassau is governed by an elected Legislature that was formed in January 1996. It replaced the Board of Supervisors, which was ruled unconstitutional because of its weighted voting system. The Legislature’s 19 districts enable constituents to have greater access to their elected representatives. It includes an independent budget director who advises the Legislature on spending and revenue matters. The legislature also enables residents to submit petitions for proposed new laws that legislators are obligated to consider. The legislators serve two-year terms. The Fourth District includes the City of Long Beach, Atlantic Beach, East Atlantic Beach, Lido Beach and Point Lookout. The county executive — currently Edward Mangano — serves a four-year term and is the chief administrator.

TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD The Town of Hempstead is the largest township in the United States with over 142 square miles, a population of approximately 725,000, 34 unincorporated areas, 22 incorporated villages, over 65 parks and marinas and 2,500 miles of city, county and state roads. In 1643, two Englishmen, John Carman and the Reverend Robert Fordham, traveled from Connecticut across the Long Island Sound to Long Island. They represented a group of settlers who wished to purchase from the Indians (the Reuckowacky, the Merockes, the Matinecock, and the Massapequas), the current Towns of Hempstead and North Hempstead. In 1644, the Town of Hempstead was founded when a patent was obtained from William Kieft, the Dutch Governor of New Amsterdam. The name Hempstead seems to derive from Hemel-Hempstead in Great Britain, which means town spot. Hempstead grew steadily in the 1800s and by 1855 it was the most populous town in Queens County with just under 10,500 people. The town, along with the rest of Long Island, supplied the greater metropolitan area with a multitude of farm products and provided abundant recreational opportunities including seashore resorts, fox hunting, polo and horse racing. The population peaked at just over 800,000 in 1970, and is now levelled at approximately 725,000. Today, on the Long Beach barrier island, the Town of Hempstead encompasses Point Lookout and Lido Beach to the east and East Atlantic Beach and Atlantic Beach to the west. The Town maintains two marinas in Point Lookout as well as several beach parks. Hempstead Town has seven elected board members. The supervisor, Kate Murray, serves a two-year term. The six council members serve four years each.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR STATE SENATOR
A
nother wonderful season of warm weather, good friends and endless fun is finally here in Long Beach.
This year, it seemed like a particularly lengthy wait, following a brutal winter, but now that summer has arrived, residents and visitors from throughout the region are gathering to celebrate all that Long Beach has to offer. Businesses are open, the boardwalk is ready, and our streets, beaches and waterways will soon be filled with families and friends spending time together. There remain numerous reminders of the struggles faced by Long Beach’s communities following the devastation from Hurricane Sandy and other coastal storms. While months have passed, challenges remain for many individuals committed to rebuilding their homes and businesses. I have seen first-hand how the people of Long Beach
rallied together to support one another through these hardships and I know that solidarity will continue until every home and business is rebuilt. It is a privilege to represent Long Beach in the state Senate Dean Skelos and my legislative colleagues and I continue fighting for the resources needed for this important job. We will continue to work with the dedicated local leaders, first responders, volunteers, and countless others who make this beachside community a unique and special place. Soon residents will be joined by thousands of visitors lured to this city by the sea and add to the hustle and bustle of Park Avenue, West Beech and surrounding streets. I appreciate this opportunity to welcome them to another beautiful summer on the South Shore and look forward to another great year for Long Beach. DEAN G. SKELOS State Senator

A MESSAGE FROM OUR ASSEMBLYMAN
As a lifelong resident of Long Beach, I feel blessed to live in this beautiful community and enjoy its fantastic quality of life. Any time of year, Long Beach is a special place to live, but nothing beats our summers. We have it all: the spectacular beaches, the boardwalk, the festivals and, of course, the people. I have always believed that what really makes Long Beach outstanding is our people. Long Beach residents have a tremendously generous spirit, bringing great energy and enthusiasm to events like the Michelle O’Neill Volleyball Tournament, which raises money for children with cancer; the Melanoma Walk to raise awareness about skin cancer; and the annual Long Beach Polar Bears Super Bowl Splash fundraiser, which has raised millions of dollars for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Long Beach also brings the joy of surfing to children with autism and other developmental disabilities. As a lifeguard for more than five decades, I know about all the magic the beach offers. But whether you are swimming, surfing, boating, walking on the boardwalk or just relaxing on the sand, please make sure to wear sunscreen.
Sunscreens lose effectiveness over time. If you suspect that your sunscreen is more than a year old, don’t use it. I continue to push legislation requiring sunscreen manufacturers to print expiration dates on their products. Until then, when in doubt, Harvey Weisenberg throw it out! It is my extraordinary privilege to get to know so many of you and to work on your behalf. I continue to focus on bringing resources to the institutions at the heart of our community: our schools, hospitals, libraries, community and recreation centers; and of course programs that serve children, the elderly and those with disabilities. I am committed to protecting our beautiful natural resources and ensuring that those who protect us – our dedicated fire fighters, law enforcement officers and emergency medical personnel – have the resources they need. My lovely wife, Ellen, and I raised our five children in Long Beach, and our six grandchildren also grew up here. It’s true: there’s no place like home! Here’s to a wonderful Long Beach summer, and I’ll see you at the Memorial Day Parade! HARVEY WEISENBERG Assemblyman

He is always working to build strong, long lasting relationships with customers and the community. Being passionate about his work, he is always willing to help find solutions to any problem. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the task has become more difficult; All Good Electric has been working diligently with homeowners, business owners, contractors and insurance companies to help the community get back on its feet, continuing now with the reconstruction of Long Beach. Paul has been a member of the chamber since 2001 and has been a vice president for the last four years. Committing his time and skills, he is very active in planning and organizing the Summer and Winter Blast events as well as helping with many chamber events to benefit the merchants. Paul has called Long Beach his home since 2001, when he moved here from Canarsie, Brooklyn, where he was born and raised. It is here in Long Beach where he met his lovely wife, Colleen, and they have three beautiful children Ava, Jack and Stella.
STANLEY FLEISHMAN “Rockets,” as Stanley Fleishman is affectionately known, has been the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce’s chairman of the board for more than 27 years. He and his good friend, the late Larry Elovich, took over an ailing chamber and together made it a force to be reckoned with in the city. Under their guidance and diligence — Continued on next page

and now under the leadership of Michael Kerr and Mark Tannenbaum — a once fading chamber is fiscally stable and a viable part of the City of Long Beach. Their secret formula is cooperation; they work closely with the merchants, the city administration and the school district. A native of Long Beach, Stanley, along with his brother, Norman, and his father, Morris, have been active in business and civic affairs in this city all their lives. After he left the U.S. Army in 1953, Stanley and his family ran Fleishman Automotive, a successful automobile sales business. Occupying most of Long Beach Boulevard, they sold Fords, Lincolns, Mercurys, BMWs, Mazdas, Jaguars, Ramblers, and later on Honda Motorcycles. In 1980 he sold the business and retired. Additionally, Stanley is a past president and chairman of the Long Beach Lions Club. For more than 40 years he was a member and chairman of the Long Beach Recreation Commission. He was instrumental in getting the ice-skating rink, the Monroe Boulevard tennis courts, and the neighborhood playgrounds throughout Long Beach. Moreover, Stanley has taken an active part in almost every service and civic organization in town, including Temple Emanu-El. With his wife, Fran, and their children, Randi Fleishman, Sari Botton and Brian Macaluso, and Amy and Yaron Goren, Stanley enjoys a warm and fun-filled family life. “The Great Baldini,” as Stanley is also known, often plies his special magic on his three grandsons, Sam, Noah and Julian.

TriSh daLy
In July 2012, with her partners, Liz SmithBreslin and Jeanne Jamin, Trish Daly joined them in opening up the second of two Blue Bungalow stores — the flagship store is in Rockaway Beach — which opened on Park Avenue in Long Beach. Daly has been instrumental in building a strong foundation with their customers and establishing the Blue Bungalow brand in Long Beach as a unique coastal themed retail gift shop offering a wide variety of items, many of which are custom designed by her partners, Liz and Jeanne, along with coastal furniture, home accents, jewelry, fashion, children’s gifts and much more. In their first year in business, Daly developed a concept called “The Park Avenue Shopping Crawl,” and along with other retailers on the avenue, they were successful in bringing together businesses to offer special discounts and a day of shopping and relaxation for their customers which drove traffic through their doors. The unique concept gave customers a chance to shop in stores that they may not have otherwise visited, and it was a great vehicle to further promote each business collectively. Her plan is to continue this event this year to help promote shopping in Long Beach. Previously, Daly was advertising director for Irish America Magazine, where she headed up the marketing and advertising of the national publication, along with developing customized and targeted marketing programs to assist her clients in cross promoting through Networking Events which she established. One of the events Daly initiated was “The Wall Street 50,” which honored top CEO's on Wall Street of Irish descent. Additionally, she created an event entitled “The Greatest Irish Americans of the Century” through the magazine, which gave accolades to the key Irish-American players of the past century. This recognition was tied in with a Black Tie event hosted by the magazine at The Plaza Hotel in Manhattan. Along with her marketing and advertising background, Daly has also handled public relations for previous publications she managed, and has a keen ability to take a project and turn it into a successful venue for all parties. Daly is married to her husband Dan of 25 years.

Camille's technical expertise that allows her to provide the highest level of technical support and networking to optimize her listing's internet presence is the ideal complement to Juan's strong service background honed in the hospitality industry. Since starting their own business, which combines the best aspects of a franchise with the nurturing support of a private firm to attract the best agents, Camille and Juan have grown to become a successful, innovative real estate company. Camille, who formerly resided in Lido Beach, currently lives by the water in Long Beach with Juan. When they’re not busy helping clients, they enjoy spending time with friends and walks on the boardwalk.
