No one saw the coronavirus pandemic coming.

No one expected it to last more than a handful of weeks. No one could have imagined the terrible death toll it would exact.

The past 18 months tested all of us beyond our limits. Wantagh and Seaford however, remain strong. The hamlets are full of fighters.

Now we understand just how resilient we, as a community, are.

Just as we saw in Superstorm Sandy's wake Stuart in 2012, neighbors have been helping neighRichner bors throughout the Covid-19 crisis, delivering food and medical supplies to vulnerable residents, providing meals for the jobless and just checking in on one another.

Thankfully, as of this writing in early August, some 80 percent of Nassau County residents had received at least their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccines, and the infection rate had dropped to a little over 3 percent. Let us hope and pray it remains at or falls below that level so people remain safe, and we can continue our successful reopening of the economy. That will depend on all of us doing our parts — most importantly, scheduling a vaccination appointment if you have not already made one.

Throughout the crisis, the Wantagh and Seaford Heralds have provided invaluable news to the community, including information on institution closings, new safety protocols and, unfortunately, remembrances of lives lost. I want to thank our journalists for their commitment to the community. Our staff, categorized as essential workers, have been out in the field regularly, even during the height of the pandemic, to ensure people who work and live in Wantagh and Seaford had access to the best and most up-to-date information.

Additionally, Richner Communications, the parent company of the Wantagh and Seaford Heralds, was proud to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in small business marketing grants to entrepreneurs across the South Shore, including many in the community. We know small businesses are the lifeblood of any community — especially in Wantagh and Seaford— so we are hopeful these funds will help your favorite stores and restaurants get back on their feet.

In this edition of our annual community guide, we look at all that is wonderful about Wantagh and Seaford, at the same time that we examine what has changed because of the pandemic.

History of Wantagh

antagh’s history began in 1643, when Capt. John Seaman and Robert Jackson purchased land from the local Indians, including the areas now known as Wantagh and Seaford.

At the time, Wantagh was inhabited by the Merokee tribe of the Metoac Indians before Dutch and English colonists arrived. Then, the Dutch petitioned to obtain everything west of Oyster Bay. The area was known as Jerusalem by the Dutch.

The name still stands in the names of local institutions.

The area was named Ridgewood in the 1880s. In 1891, because Ridgewood was already being used by another New York town, the members of the Memorial Congregational Church helped change the name to that of a Merokee and Montauk sachem from the 1640s.

The Wantagh Post Office was rebuilt in 1907 to replicate the original 1837 look. It currently sits across from the Wantagh Preservation Society and the 1912 Jamaica parlor car at 1700 Wantagh Ave.

History of Seaford

he area known today as Seaford was originally called “Great Water Land” or “Land on the Great Cove,” by the Massapequa tribe that settled there.

It was bought by Capt. John Seamen and Robert Jackson in 1643 and eventually named after his hometown in England.

He bought the land after fleeing the Plymouth, Mass., settlement in search of greater freedom of religious and political expression.

The first school was built in 1830. Today, the community south of Jerusalem Avenue is served by the Seaford School District, with some children in north-

ern Seaford attending schools in Levittown. Private schools in Seaford include the Maria Regina and St. William the Abbot parochial schools. The Hagedorn Little Village School serves more than 500 special-needs children.

The Long Island Rail Road extended through Seaford to Babylon for the first time in 1867.

The Seaford Historical Society, a former school building dedicated in 1976, holds much of Seaford’s history, such as a 1910 skiff and faded pictures of Seaford from many decades ago. With a population of roughly 15,000, Seaford commemorated the 375th anniversary, of its founding in 2018.

hrough all circumstances, the Seaford community operates in unity. After a tough year of navigating the pandemic, Seaford businesses have joined forces to reopen.

“Businesses are back and are very happy to be open,” Chamber of Commerce member Donna Jebaily said. “I’ve spoken to a lot of business owners of restaurants and local stores, and they’re all really happy to be up and running again. We like seeing people shop local, so that’s definitely a plus in Seaford.”

Community events resumed as well, such as the Chamber of Commerce’s regular “Seaford Saturday Nights.” Jebaily, the Herald’s 2019 Person of the Year and one of the 2021 Honorary Patriot Award winners, organized the event, which kicked off in mid-June 2021.

“We always have a great turn out because that’s how the Seaford community is,” Jebaily said. “People were having a great time. I spoke to a lot of them who said, ‘Who cares about the rain? We’re just happy to be out and see each other again.’”

During the pandemic, the chamber, businesses and locals collected money for food for those in need. The chamber was involved in local restaurant deliveries to keep local eateries in business. “Now that it’s mostly over, we can proceed with neighborhood events that we had to put on hold,” Jebaily said.

On June 7, 2021, the New York State Department of Health encouraged public and private schools to fully open their schools.

Seaford School District has been no exception: High schoolers resumed in-person learning at the end of the school year and the district hosted an in-person graduation ceremony.

Seaford is home to nearly a dozen parks, including Seamans Neck Park, Washington Avenue Park, Estella Park and Cedar Creek Park, located just south of Merrick Road and east of Wantagh Avenue. Seaford’s parks and recreation facilities are in use for the first time since March 2020.

The community offers a Police Activity League for several children’s sports, along with a Catholic Youth Organization and Seaford Little League baseball and softball. Seaford is also the home of the Long Island Broncos youth football and cheer organization.

Seaford’s main business district runs along Merrick Road.

Businesses are also located farther north, along Sunrise Highway, Washington Avenue and in the Seaford Harbor section.

Seaford’s many service clubs, including the Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club, Wellness Council, Seaford Historical Society, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Kiwanis Club, truly stepped up to preserve the well-being of their community this past year. The community’s spirit of service will continue to be needed throughout the rest of the year, as they work to recover from one of the biggest crises in a century.

Seaford Saturday Nights unites locals; represents community's reopening

S

eaford residents were thrilled to see their community reopen this past summer as many neighborhood events resumed. One of these events was the weekly “Seaford Saturday Nights," organized by the Seaford Chamber of Commerce.

The event, which kicked off on June 19, was held at the Seaford Long Island Rail Road parking lot, where food trucks and craft vendors lined up on each side.

Donna Jebaily, the Herald’s 2019 person of the year and a member of the chamber’s board of directors, organized the function alongside fellow chamber member Celia Hanney. Jebaily and Hanney hosted the event for the first time in summer 2019, and it was a huge success, so they decided to bring it back this year.

“Every single food truck said they wanted to come back this year,” Jebaily said, “because they love the people of Seaford.”

This summer’s Seaford Saturday Nights were held on June 19 and Aug. 21. Jebaily said residents were overjoyed to be out with one another again after a year of little social interaction because of the pandemic.

“We always have a great turnout because that’s just how the Seaford community is,” she said.

“People came out rain or shine. The families were there. The kids were playing. We had food trucks and live music. It was like a big block party.”

The June event featured music by the Long Island-based cover band Our Generation. Both the June and August Saturday Nights featured children’s activities, like gaga ball.

e have a very engaged community with a wonderful support system of organizations that contribute to our quality of life,” said Ella Stevens, president of the Wantagh Homeowners Association and the Fourth of July Parade Association, as well as director of the Miss Wantagh pageant.

While last year’s Fourth of July Parade was canceled because of the pandemic, Wantagh residents were eager to attend this year’s parade held on July 3. The parade, which runs through the heart of Wantagh on Wantagh Avenue, had a huge turnout despite some rain.

“The Wantagh community has weathered the storm of the pandemic,” Stevens said, “and to show everybody how proud they are of it, they came out in the pouring rain to witness the Fourth of July parade.”

In addition, while last year’s Miss Wantagh pageant was forced to go virtual, this year’s pageant winner, Seaford Junior Angelina Maciak, was able to receive her crown in person. Maciak was the first runner-up in the previous year’s pageant. Wantagh has held this pageant every year since 1956. Pageant winners commit to a year of service in the community.

According to local real estate professionals, Wantagh schools are among the strongest selling points for families looking to relocate to the community.

“Our schools have been and continue to be excellent,” Stevens said, “and they do a great job at supporting our community and the organizations within it.”

Wantagh community residents often speak of how much they love the hamlet’s proximity to the water. From the marina in Wantagh Park all the way down to Jones Beach, no place in Wantagh is more than 15 minutes from the water. And the 16-mile Jones Beach bike path that has been extended to Giglo Beach offers fresh air and exercise.

The past year was a tough one for Wantagh’s businesses such as restaurants and retail stores. Businesses have, however, begun developing new approaches to run things and the prevailing mood is one of optimism. Love and support for their community is a common denominator among residents.

Wantagh residents also love the community’s train museum, which showcases part of Wantah’s nearly 400-year history, its beautiful neighborhoods, and above all, the small town feel.

“There’s so many friendly people,” one longtime resident said. “It’s a great place to raise a family!”

Wantagh is served by the Nassau County Police Department, the Wantagh Fire Department and EMTS, and Wantagh-Levittown Volunteer Ambulance Corps. It has its own Long Island Rail Road station and an active library. Major roads include Merrick Road, Sunrise Highway, Jerusalem Avenue, Wantagh Avenue and the Wantagh and Southern state parkways.

Residents are thrilled to be getting back to normal this summer and resuming their enjoyment of all the many amenities, entertainment, and recreation opportunities that the hamlet affords.

evittown School District is one of Nassau County's largest, serving more than 7,000 students from Levittown, North Wantagh and portions of northern Seaford. Wantagh-Seaford youngsters living within the district’s borders typically attend East Broadway or Lee Road elementary schools before moving on to Jonas Salk Middle School and then becoming Generals at General Douglas MacArthur High School; a handful of children from both communities go to Gardiners Avenue Elementary as well.

In addition, the Gerald R. Clapps Career & Technical Center provides training for skilled trades and welcomes students from both Seaford and Wantagh districts to its half-day programs.

ife is finally getting back to normal for students, teachers and staff at Seaford’s schools after one of the most difficult academic years in the district’s history.

Most of Seaford’s Schools resumed in-person classes in the fall of 2020, but reserved the option for students to stay home and take their classes remotely if they preferred.

Teachers and staff said they were excited to reunite with familiar faces in the 2021-22 school year.

“This has been a unique and challenging year.,” said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Adele Pecora.

“However, our students and staff continuously demonstrated their Seaford Pride, and we are excited to close out the year with an in-person graduation celebrating our class of 2021. As New York continues to open, we look forward to all of our students returning to school in September for in-person classes.”

Seaford Chamber of Commerce member and parent Donna Jebaily also had positive things to say about Seaford’s schools. “Coming from a parent, I must say that the schools are reopening very smoothly,” she said. “The school has been amazing this entire time throughout the pandemic, and with the end of the [2020-21] school year approaching, they’ve been very on top of everything.

High School has also finally went back full-time, and the kids are very happy to be back. I couldn’t ask for anything more from the school district.”

Jebaily explained that while Seaford’s middle schools ran all year, it was the high schools that were shut down, but they’ve now had a smooth transition back to in-person-learning.

“The high school staff has been very accommodating,” she said, “to everyone, including students that maybe can’t be there in person. Everything ran smoothly, and they made that transition of going back very easy us for us parents.”

On June 26, the district celebrated its high school graduation at the Tilles Center for the first time. The new venue was popular among parents and students and will be used again next year for graduation as well.

“It was a wonderful celebration of 13 years of Seaford School District Education," Pecora said.

“The students were outstanding in regards to the speeches they had given. I believe they felt honored and felt that they were afforded the correct celebratory event, especially given the difficulty of the last 16 months.

Pecora described the ceremony, explaining that during the process of students receiving their diplomas, the event’s administrators gave a bit of background information on each student, explaining what students had done while at Seaford’s schools and their future plans. Pecora noted that she was tremendously impressed while hearing about all of the graduates’ accomplishments.

Seaford is also home to two private Catholic schools: Maria Regina and St. William the Abbot, as well as the Hagedorn Little Village School, a private school for more than 400 special-needs students.

Although Wantagh students experienced an unusual start to the 2020-21 school year, district officials worked diligently to make the new regulations run as smoothly as possible.

Superintendent John McNamara said students and faculty met the challenges of 2020, and will do so in the 2021-22 academic year ahead.

Wantagh’s elementary schools, middle school, and high school all reopened in September 2020, but each followed a different protocol. Students in grades kindergarten to six were permitted to go back to school in-person every day. Students in grades seven to 12 initially attended school using a hybrid model, attending school two or three days per week in person and the other two or three days remotely.

By March 2021, Wantagh’s schools had eased their restrictions. Seventh- and ninth-graders returned to school full time in person on March 15, while grades eight, 10, 11 and 12 began full-time, in-person learning on March 22.

Most recently, Wantagh High School’s graduating class marked two very important end-of-theyear events in person.

Seniors celebrated their graduation on June 18 at Wantagh High School football field. Each student was allowed to bring four guests. The graduating class also held prom on June 23 at The Piermont in Babylon. The venue requested that unvaccinated individuals wear masks when not seated or eating, but did not require students to produce evidence of vaccination.

As the circumstances surrounding the pandemic

continue to improve and life gets back to normal, Wantagh school officials said they are confident they too will soon return to a state of normalcy in their learning environment.

fter being closed due to the coronavirus pandemic for several months, the Wantagh Public Library reopened to the public in fall 2020.

“This made us stand out from a lot of other libraries,” said Library Director Shannon Marchese, “because a lot of them were hesitant to do so…but we did it while maintaining social distance and keeping small group sizes.”

Marchese, who became the library’s director in January 2021, said it’s been exciting to work in the Wantagh community.

“The community is great,” Marchese said. “They come in and they’re excited and thankful to have a library to come into, and we’re happy to be there for them.”

Wantagh Public Library typically hosts summer reading programs for children, teens and adults. After being forced to cancel these in-person events last summer because of the pandemic, staff looked forward to hosting this year, Marchese said.

Some of the library’s events this summer included exercise classes, book discussions, arts and crafts sessions for kids and adults, and a scavenger hunt in the children’s rooms.

The 2021 summer reading theme, Tails and Tales, encouraged readers to learn about animals throughout the world as well as the environments they inhabit. The three programs, which included one for children, one for teens and one for adults, ran from mid-June to mid-August.

With all that the Wantagh library provides, it’s no wonder why so many residents check it out all year round.

ike the neighboring Wantagh Library, Seaford Public Library reopened to the public in fall 2020 after being shut down for many months.

Library Director Frank McKenna, who has held the position since 2011, said the library is making progress in its return to normalcy.

“We’re not fully back to prepandemic normality just yet. … but we’re certainly getting there,” McKenna said.

The library hosted its outdoor concert series in the summer of 2021, which saw a big turnout with residents eager to celebrate. The series kicked off July 24 with Long Island-based band, The History of Rock ‘n’ Roll. While the library normally hosts about four concerts per year, owing to the uncertain circumstances of the pandemic, organizers managed to put together two concerts this year, McKenna said.

Seaford’s Library will continue to host a number of in-person programs that benefit the community, including defensive-driving classes, mahjong and bingo sessions, book discussions and film screenings.

The library will continue to roll out virtual programs, which started in 2020. “This was a good thing that came out of the pandemic,” Mckenna explained. “We were able to get connected with certain lecturers and authors who wouldn’t have been involved with us before the pandemic because they don’t live nearby.”

Jones Beach mass vaccination site closes

he mass vaccination site at Jones Beach, along with three other New York state sites, shut down in July.

The Wantagh vaccination site ceased operations on July 19. The makeshift sites at the Conference and Event Center Niagara Falls, Plattsburgh International Airport and SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Utica also closed that week.

The closures came roughly one month after then Gov. Cuomo announced restrictions would be lifted for residents after 70 percent of New Yorkers had received the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. Cuomo said that additional sites would shutter as part of the effort prioritize local vaccination efforts.

“We are continuing to target communities that have lower vaccination rates and using every tool at our disposal to make the vaccine accessible to every New Yorker," Cuomo said in a news brief.

In Nassau County, at least 80 percent of adults had received their first jab as of mid-August. According to the State Department of Health, Nassau had the highest percentage of adults with at least one dose among all counties in the state with a population greater than 200,000.

Some 2,109 Wantagh residents and 1,818 Seaford residents had tested positive for Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, as of midAugust, according to data from the Nassau County Department of Information Technology.

As the contagious variants of the coronavirus emerge, like the Delta variant, County Executive Laura Curran encouraged residents to get vaccinated.

“This virus has not disappeared,” Curran said.

“Getting vaccinated remains the single best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from getting sick or dying from Covid. The county is keeping a

vigilant eye on the numbers and external developments, and we continue to encourage eligible residents who haven't gotten their shots yet to roll up their sleeves.”

When the Jones Beach site first opened in midJanuary, doses were limited, and some residents struggled to schedule an appointment. The Herald previously reported that vaccines were often administered the day that they arrived at the Wantagh site. As vaccines became available in the area, though, appointments became more accessible.

Mount Sinai South Nassau continues to serve community, breaks new ground

MSSN’s beautiful North Addition houses two 36bed medical surgical units, a 36-bed inpatient behavioral health unit and comprehensive maternity services center with 26 private postpartum rooms, spacious labor and delivery rooms and a neonatal intensive care unit.

The hospital’s Emergency Services department is one of the largest and most advanced on Nassau County’s South Shore. Designated a regional stroke center and Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons, the department houses 35 treatment rooms and specialty care, including a high-speed CT-scan and x-ray facility, pediatric emergency room and psychiatric emergency room.

MSSN is the only hospital on Nassau’s South Shore permitted to perform angioplasty in an emergency or an elective basis. In the event you or a loved one need angioplasty, it can be performed on the spot at the hospital’s Center for Cardiovascular Health, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

And services are expanding, as on June 22, MSSN celebrated the groundbreaking for its J-Wing on its Oceanside campus. The wing will serve as the cornerstone of hospital’s $400 million capital expansion to increase health-care services. Projected to open in 2023, the $130 million J-Wing will stand at four stories and 100,000 square feet.

The chairman of Mount Sinai’s board of directors, Joe Fennessy, said the board re-evaluated old plans for the facility, updating the infrastructure to match the evolving trends in health care. “We began to reimagine what this hospital should be, and we realized to best serve the needs of our community, we had to be something different,” he said.

When faced with an “unprecedented” situation in April 2020 as coronavirus numbers reached their peak, 383, the staff at Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital rose to the occasion and banded together to get through the difficult time. Now, staff is gearing up to continue the fight against the Delta variant.

While many lives were lost to the coronavirus, the hospital celebrated the release of hundreds of Covid-19 positive patients who were released with a clean bill of health. At a time when front-line workers were stretched thin, the Oceanside community and many others came together to show their support, donating food to the hospital’s staff daily throughout the pandemic.

With Covid-19 cases back on the rise and new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance announced on July 27, local hospitals are in full preparation mode. Dr. Adhi Sharma, chief medical officer at MSSN, recently discussed how people can protect themselves and their loved ones from the variant.

Sharma said that Mount Sinai has seen an increase over the last week in their Covid patient census. Where the hospital saw one to two cases a day in June, they saw eight between July 29 and 30.

Those new cases among patients have universally been seen in unvaccinated individuals.

“The challenge with Delta is that it is extremely transmissible,” Sharma said. “Even vaccinated individuals are getting Delta and we are seeing that in our staff.” Sharma added that most of the cases the hospital has seen has come from travel.

“We came out of the box, and we may have to go back in the box for a little bit,” he said. “That’s going to be challenging and I think we are going to see a lot of Covid cases as a result of that.”

Before, during and after the surge of the pandemic, MSSN was committed to delivering standardsetting, patient-centered health care. It is one of the region’s largest hospitals, with 455 beds, more than 900 physicians and 3,000 employees.

he Wantagh Fire Department is a volunteer organization made up of about 250 members that has served the community for more than 115 years. The department provides protection to more than 18,000 homes and 700 businesses 24 hours a day. It is one of the largest fire districts in Nassau County, which not only covers Wantagh, but also parts of Seaford, Levittown, East Meadow, Bellmore and Jones Beach State Park and Tobay Beach.

The robust unit also sponsors many community organizations and events.

he Seaford Fire Department was founded in 1901. For more than a century, the organization has provided fire and medical services to local households and businesses. The department is known throughout Seaford for its dedication to the community and for fulfilling its duty. Both communities are served by the 7th Precinct, at 3636 Merrick Road in Seaford, the 8th precinct, at 299 Hicksville Road in Bethpage, or the 1st Precinct, in Baldwin.

The precincts’ divisions include patrol, detective and support services. They have marine bureaus, robbery and homicide squads, among other divisions.

The Wantagh-Levittown Volunteer Ambulance Corps has assisted residents in need since 1956.

The organization — based at 129 Balsam Lane in Levittown — aims to strengthen, enrich and educate while providing the highest quality and standard of emergency medical aid.

How one Wantagh vocalist and his rock band went viral

I

n early May, South Shore-based rock band Adam and the Metal Hawks covered AC/DC’s “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ’n’ Roll),” and posted the video to social media platform TikTok. At the time, the band had one main goal: to have actor and musician Jack Black — who covered the track in the film “School of Rock” — post a video reply on the app.

“We tried to incorporate either songs that he had covered or his songs,” lead singer Adam Ezegelian, of Wantagh, said, “and we worked them into different formats for our TikToks.”

Soon enough, a “public pressure campaign” was created on the app, as drummer Alex Hertler described it. The band’s social media following urged Black, the vocalist for Tenacious D, to post a video reply to it. “We went onto his most recent [TikTok] video, and every other comment was like, ‘duet@amhband right now,’” Hertler recalled with a laugh.

Adam and the Metal Hawks’ sixth video attempt at a response from Black, posted May 27, was a mash-up of TikTok viral track “Dick,” by Doja Cat and StarBoi3, and the Tenacious D song “Kickapoo.” Two days later, a video response from Black appeared on bassist/vocalist Ryan Daversa’s TikTok “For You Page,” a curated, algorithm-set series of videos on the platform.

Black’s video reply went viral — in late August, it had over 65 million views, 14 million likes and 83,000 comments. It also boosted Adam and the Metal Hawks’ TikTok profile.

But the group had already gained widespread popularity on social media, even before Black was involved. They’ve attracted over 3 million followers on the app since they established the account in January 2021. They’ve garnered over 31 million video likes.

Ezegelian is known to some as a finalist on “American Idol.” In 2015, at age 20, he made it to the Top 16 of Season 14.

Prior to Ezegelian’s joining the group in 2015, Daversa, Hertler and guitarist John Barry were the Metal Hawks. “We were definitely more on the metal side on the rock spectrum,” Hertler said.

“When Adam came in, he kind of has that punky kind of voice, which is very rhythmic. So we shifted more toward hard rock.”

While the coronavirus pandemic has been full of tragedy, Daversa said, it gave the band the opportunity to expand on social media. “I’m not going to sit here and glorify a pandemic, but if it wasn’t for Covid, I don’t think we would’ve hopped on TikTok when we did,” he said. “I don’t think we would’ve had the original songs coming out as soon as we did, and we would’ve grown at the rate we have.”

With more than 1,000 volunteers, the shelter and rescue programs rose to the challenge and weathered the storm of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Town of Hempstead

The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads.

Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Don Clavin — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a twoyear term, and the council members have four-year terms of office.

The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget.

Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes.
